- sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+63I wish they had banned Britney Spears years ago with this idea.
- PradaPete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39or they should have sent her right into the porn business, along with Christina.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23I dont know if techdirt would be considered blogspam. They arent the usual type of loser linking to their blogspot page. I actually have techdirt as one of my Google homepage feeds...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22"Lets see, which do we trust more: bloggers or The Inquirer?"
The Inquirer is not The Enquirer. The Inquirer is a tech site that sometimes reports on rumors. For example, they reported on AMD acquiring ATI four days before AMD confirmed it. - fiver22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Her site: http://www.amythomas.co.uk/
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Like everything the music industry does, this will backfire as the story is picked up by Digg, etc. and brings huge amounts of exposure to the kid's music.
I feel like pirating a CD just to spite the bastards hehe - DarkPhoen1x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18yet another reason not to buy any CD whose artist/band has anything to do with RIAA...
- sweetnuts4sale, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16just one more organization that's acting like idiots
- winjer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You could do worse than sign her record label's petition, that seems to have got the BPI so worked up in the first place:
http://www.flowerburger.com/petition.php - bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Who would possibly want to mod down parent's comment? for what possible reason?
Big Corporations *are* acting like *****, because every individual in the company denies responsibility, and every shareholder demands profit... Thus the company has the motive of "greed" without the inhibition of "guilt"
The structure of flawed, and people need to boycott (if they aren't already) big business like this...
Give away your music for a while.. it doesn't hurt. My band is giving away it's debut album at http://www.childreninthegame.net and we're getting quite a few downloads... yes it's costing me money to host it, but if I can play even the smallest part in bringing down these greedy bastards it will have proven a wise investment. - danakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13EFF the RIAA! EFF the BPI!
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Ashley Simpson has effectively banned herself.
- muskawo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Maybe if we burn cds the RIAA will ban us from buying them... hmmm.
- muskawo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The RIAA must just be trying really hard to find new ways to make people hate it. That's the only way this makes sense.
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7gooooooo freedom of speech.
Top 40/100/10 charts are for communists and morons either way. - oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ok, so i only listened to the first song... it sounds like she's singingn along to the default beat on a toy casio keyboard.
but thats besides the point, she stood up to BPI and i think thats awesome. - cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4bitcloud - d/l your album, thanks mucho!
- dahamsta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Done.
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3bitcloud - 1st cut was sweet, the music is interesting and mellow. Thanks, again.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, a prescribed list of mandatory listening is communist, not fascist. Brilliant accusation there.
- edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate commerical radio - the RIAA tells them what to play based on the charts they put together... You wonder why the new Britney song gets played 2 times an hour and is at #1, when everyone you know would rather listen to pop fizzle. Wonder no more...
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where is "V" when you need him...
- rubored, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2***** RIAA :@
There make me so angry!
Honestly, i what happened to freedom of speech, as mentioned?!?
RIAA has to stop this ***** lawsuit stuff, and realise that anyone is allowed to create good music, unlike most the artists in the charts at the moment.
The fellas at the RIAA Public Relations have a reallllll good media stratergy :? - josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or better yet Ashley Simpson...
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stop suing consumers and I will buy music. Till then, in case you record boys have not figured it out..I can find ton's of legal music without BPI/RIAA support.
- eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks jerk, now my ears are bleeding.
But still, it's good to see the new generation of, err, musicians, supporting file sharing. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RIAA, CRIA, and BPI don't stop anyone from making music. However, they can stop people from getting on their charts.
So who cares about charts? Charts are some company's opinion of what you should be buying next. Screw them. Buy whatever you want and listen to superior quality sound on CD. And if that artist is cool with free music distribution (and even if they aren't) do them a favour and make copies for all your friends.
Don't be daunted by restrictive laws. The music industry bought those laws from the government. Break those laws and resist! - CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@spyrochaete
Are you kidding me? Artists who play music for money are just hobos holding out their hats? Real artists don't do it for the money?
You must enjoy perpetuating the starving artist lifestyle. After all, REAL artists enjoy slaving over their works so pinheads like you can consume for free. They don't need to eat, pay bills, or muck about with all those mundane trifles.
Still, you've got me thinking. I wonder how much YOU enjoy working for free? Maybe it's time you moved out of your Mum's basement and stopped leaching off your parents' table? - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now i guess we can kill RIAA by getting the artists to support filesharing. RIAA breaks their contracts with the act of not marketing them. done. RIAA is dead. Artists are free from their contracts and make more money. i like it.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I won't. Too little, too late. Screw artists who play music for money. They're just hobos holding out their hats.
A real artist doesn't do it for the money. No artist is stuck with a label. If they truly want to create art they wouldn't care about the shackles of capitalism. Art is supposed to be expression of the soul. If you sell your innermost self you are nothing but a whore.
Share music openly and copy it for all your friends. Culture is not for sale! - MattBPI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry all, but this story isn't true.
The BPI didn't decide to ban the artist - not only is it untrue that we made a decision to ban her from the campaign - she was never in the running in the first place.
Since we did not ban her, it's therefore untrue that we did so on the basis of her personal views, but for the record we don't condone censorship.
As it happens, despite the reports we don't believe that there were 50 children outside the BPI. In fact we were not even aware they had come to the offices until we were contacted about the press release - which had the nerve to falsely claim we had "refused" to comment.
For the record the BPI has brought cases against individuals for illegally distributing significant quantities of music over the internet without permission. We have always maintained that an artist is at liberty to give their music away for free, but they and the rightsholders deserve to be paid for the consumption of their music should they wish.
Matt Phillips, BPI - cody50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The RIAA will soon come after your for humming a song you heard on the radio.
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1maybe we could help the process along by signing an online letter of intent to stop filesharing and support artists that support filesharing. if RIAA has stated this as a policy then it wouldn't take much for an artist to accept that RIAA will axe them and say RIAA is in breach of contract. i mean... if RIAA says they going to and demonstrated that they will then done deal.
- hardkoretom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see nothing wrong with this move. BPI like the RIAA, has to make money in order to survive. Since this girl has no need for somebody to sue on her behalf, BPI will not make a dime off of her. She has the right idea, the more people who stop using BPI or RIAA, then the less money they make off of people they sue == no income.
- therayven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2[devil's advocate]
So what part of "We don't have to add competing labels' musicians to our charts" is unfair about this? I hate the **AAs as much as anyone, but this almost strikes me as a non-story. BPI refused to allow an independently-signed artist on their chart, whose label just happens to be very vocally anti-BPI. I see nothing wrong with this.
[/devil's advocate] - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2especially if EFF = Eat Ferret Fanny
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's too bad their site looks exactly like The Register's... makes it a little hard to take them too seriously.
- blindReticle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've said it once and I'll say it again.
Bastards. - mushroomqueen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, please. I'm pretty sure that the spokesman for BPI didn't just decide to sign up for Digg so he could make an unofficial statement about the "real story". Get a life, imposter.
- ndruar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just another case of a giant monopoly (here over the recording industry) and the lack of real power to do anything about it...ditto to the V comment...
- peterbruff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Goddamn the RIAA! Keep it Creative Commons, download The Kazoo Funk Orchestra album for free from www.kazoofunk.co.uk/music.html
- mushroomqueen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The point isn't about whether or not she's a good singer..it's about beaurocracy crushing any form of resistance..including any from 12-year-old musicians. Way to go, BPI.
- wistar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Promantarius:
I agree. The lines between blogs and mainstream media, especially web-oriented mainstream media, is getting blurry. People just need to use judgement about their sources. If you want to be known for crummy stories and links then pay no regard to origin of your sources. - Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -18/+7Lets see, which do we trust more: bloggers or The Inquirer? Linking to a blog was probably the best way to assure it was taken (more?) seriously.
