- Dopeness, on 10/21/2009, -1/+42Believe it or not, many apartments and other residential buildings are often designed to withstand -much- more weight than that, depending on the area of course.
Being an architect I can tell you that most residential and commercial buildings are designed to withstand the following loading:
40-100 LB /SQ FT LIVE LOAD (Pianos, Couches) and
15 - 30 LB/SQ FT DEAD LOAD (Load Bearing Walls etc)
The higher loads are normally found in commercial buildings and mezzanines (offices) as well as apartment buildings at times.
So, to take the loading into perspective... one could actually take an 8x8 Hot Tub that has a 'wet' weight of 6000 LB (3 tons) and the floor would -still- be designed to support it... even in an 8x8 area. (6000lb/64 sqft = 93.75 LB/SQ FT -> Sub 100lb/sq ft Live Load limit)
So, having 3 tons of sand spread out an entire house/room is actually nothing to worry about. - joculator, on 10/21/2009, -5/+27wouldn't it be cool if he kicked Eminem's ass.
- shourn, on 10/21/2009, -0/+19And you're on Digg.
- idmonster, on 10/21/2009, -4/+22Moby is a nerd and not cool. He said so himself.
- AmusedToDeath, on 10/21/2009, -2/+20I'd forgotten what a giant douchebag Eminem was. Thanks for reminding me.
- wbrns, on 10/21/2009, -0/+16Awesome video and details.
- hairyblue, on 10/21/2009, -1/+16I really found this interesting, but then again, I am the nerd he's talking about...
- outfed, on 10/21/2009, -1/+16Most interesting thing I've seen on Digg in a while. Dugg for not being about politics, legalizing marijuana, xkcd, or glenn beck.
- digitalArtform, on 10/21/2009, -1/+13Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972)
Age: 37 - centran, on 10/21/2009, -0/+12They did not go into that much detail because it is MTV Cribs. synths are not very pimp.
It was on that episode that it became clear many of the MTV Cribs are complete bull *****. They want you to act a certain way. Some of the cars that you see are just rented for that tapping... maybe even some of the houses. As with most ***** on MTV, much of it is fake. - mesasone, on 10/21/2009, -2/+13Er, who the hell dugg you down?
- KingKeys, on 10/21/2009, -1/+11Well I think you're cool, Moby.
- askantik, on 10/22/2009, -0/+8BTW, am I the only one that thinks the interview/host guy is really ***** awkward? There are like 100 shots of him standing there looking dumb... that isn't necessary, lol.
- iker89, on 10/21/2009, -2/+10Rare? Wasn't he on Cribs like 10 years ago?
- llamabox, on 10/21/2009, -0/+7Long video (12+ min) but worth the watch.
- ruthpenders, on 10/21/2009, -0/+7I am married to one of those "nerds" he speaks of. And I love it. :)
- digitalArtform, on 10/21/2009, -1/+8"No one ever sweats on a plug-in."
- AiR1890, on 10/21/2009, -1/+7that is a stale joke, didn't eminem release that song over 5 years ago?
- evilsin, on 10/21/2009, -2/+8actually techno is listened to more than eminem is listened to
- LBUCHA, on 10/21/2009, -0/+6very cool -- wacky, but cool
- maliath, on 10/21/2009, -1/+7Building codes rule!
- jonvictorino, on 10/21/2009, -0/+6"808, you're my only friend."
- Rudymoman, on 10/21/2009, -2/+8So this is where all the magic happens
- storstygg, on 10/21/2009, -5/+103 tons of sand in a small Manhattan apt? I would NOT want to live below him.
- RonADiSH, on 10/21/2009, -0/+5must be fun being rich
- drjennings, on 10/21/2009, -0/+4I used to have one of those old Wurlitzer Sideman drum machines back in the 70's. It was cool, in a Dick Van Dyke kinda way, but was kind of hopeless to use in any real music setting, unless you had someone to reset all the mechanical dials and switches after each song. But, it was fun to see that someone like Moby still appreciates those old boxes.
Here's a video of one in action. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLgyQG8Pu8s - depro9, on 10/21/2009, -0/+4haha nice digg needs more vbs.tv content! :)
- jiggawatt, on 10/21/2009, -1/+5Sorry I came up through the scene that made Moby so popular. In his early days he was putting out some interesting stuff and Play certainly was a unique album in it's time and really pushed his popularity up, but his music has not stood the test of time. He's a footnote, hardly a star. There are so many producers who run circles around him musically and creatively who deserve much more attention that this guy.
- borez, on 10/21/2009, -0/+4Great video... ***** ***** server.
- maccagrabme, on 10/21/2009, -0/+4For all the kit he has I don't think his music sounds any more interesting than someone using a load of vst plugins. Nice equipment though but I think it would be a distraction.
- Roboctopus, on 10/21/2009, -0/+3Some of us like analog synths and drum machines for the tactile experience. I like tweaking a drum machine or synth (analog or digital) in real-time with real knobs way more than playing with a plug in.
- PowderedToasty, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3This is a video about Moby's cool collection of old instruments, not a video of why Moby is the greatest musician ever.
- centran, on 10/21/2009, -0/+3I didn't realize Moby was an up-talker. I have heard him interview before and I don't remember it being that bad.
- fcrow, on 10/21/2009, -0/+3Your husband is lucky :)
- Dreeon, on 10/21/2009, -0/+3Oh, I thought you said Tony.
- jiggawatt, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2I agree to an extent. It's mostly an unknown love of the signal path. Yes, ultimately the sound ends up through a ADC and in a digital format today, but the older analog synths replicate the sounds through filters of discrete components, not always as a sampled sound. Most modern drum machines (why would you buy one when you could just do it on your computer?) are just playing digital samples of a drum sound. This is a lot different than how the drum sounds were made on the old analogue machines. That's why you get guys who buy the analog synth, rip each sound, put the machine on a shelf for the rest of its life, and build songs on all the new sequencing technology we have.
- askantik, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2Moby = awesome dude, even outside of his music which I don't really know all that well.
But he criticizes the RIAA, supports Tibet, advocates network neutrality, works for a non-profit that supports the scientific study of the effects of music on the brain, he writes essays in his album inserts, and he licenses music for non-profit and independent films with proceeds going to the Humane Society.
And his middle name is Melville. Seriously, that's cool. - MobbyG, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2Agreed. Sloooow and choppy.
- amcnair, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2He changed his direction a lot after "Play," but I liked "18." I really like "Wait for Me" a lot. It's not the same kind of techno he started out with, but I think it's a great comeback album.
- redsox59, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2It is entirely possible someone on Digg would legitimately post a comment like that.
- nepidae, on 10/21/2009, -0/+2There is a difference between recording and synthesizing.
- RobbieF, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2Moby saw me through the monitor and spoke directly to me when he was talking about electronic musician nerds.
- nigelsan, on 10/23/2009, -0/+2and knowing is half the battle....
- La9os, on 10/21/2009, -1/+3As a guy whos done electronic music ... these analog purists are usually full of it.
Moby LOVES analog drum machines, yet he samples them and uses them digitally in a plugin?
And this somehow sounds better than a digital drum machine that plays back samples that were recorded into it? - lektroluv, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1if you're into that kinda stuff you should check out these videos:

- FACT, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1yes
- Schmich, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1I thought he was about to cry when he said that. Did anyone else want to hear the last few things he showed? It was quite the teaser when he said he never listened to that wooden one and then ended up not turning it on :/
- La9os, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1And I totally understand and agree with that. However Moby claims to love these things yet he doesn't build songs inside of them and tweak their knobs. He just samples them into a digial sample plugin and triggers them back by midi inside of protools. Essentially becoming a hypocrite who talks about how no one sweats over a plugin, when he himself made millions sweating over plugins and not even bothering to program the songs inside of those old machines.
- leonidas333, on 10/22/2009, -1/+2Thats not Mobys studio/
Moby makes his music by hiding in the closets of the families of old famous southern singers, counting down to he 75 year copyright run outs then he jumps out and hells 'Its Mine Baby!', remixes it then passes it off as his own.
Then he turns around and threatens to sue the ***** out of anyone else that threatens to sample his own tunes. -
