Radiohead to Prince: Unblock 'Creep' cover videos

news.yahoo.com — After word spread that Prince covered Radiohead's "Creep" at Coachella, the tens of thousands who couldn't be there ran to YouTube for a peek. Everyone was quickly denied — even Radiohead. "Really? He's blocked it?" asked Thom Yorke, "Well, tell him to unblock it. It's our ... song."

      So now he's doing Radiohead covers, and their most commercially popular song ever? What a ***** hypocrite. I could see if he was doing a song he appreciated that probably hasn't been covered gazillion times before, like Electionerring or something, but this is just flat out hypocrisy. I implore all of you to watch Kevin Smith's first "An Evening With..." for an awesome and entertaining take on Prince's ***** that even beats out Charlie Murphy's experience. He seems like the kind of person who doesn't give a ***** about another human being but himself.

      Carmen Electra said she was expected to sleep in full-dress and in full make-up just in case he wanted to bust in at 2AM for a booty call. That kind of arrogance just makes me sick.

        Warning: It's awful. Completely wrecked a good song. Had no power, no emotion, and either didn't know, didn't care about, or decided that in his infinite ego and glory that whatever words he came up with would be far superior to the original. They are not.

        No wonder he's pulling it.

        (I didn't read farther than this before googling for the video, its down a few through some blog, but it has the same vid as this one embedded it looks liks.)

A performance manifests in a different copyright than the song; while Yorke has the copyright on the music, Prince has a performance copyright on this particular rendition. The recording of the performance in a fixed medium (ie. camcorder) by the audience is probably a violation of Prince's copyright. Yorke has just given free license to his music in this instance when he told them to go ahead and publish it. One also has to ask how much of a transformation the music has been through when comparing it to the original song, and what amount of it is left.

      I think Prince, as much as a douche as he is, probably can prevent the distribution of his performance. This is not advice, I am not a lawyer.

        Stoggoth is absolutely correct... there can be multiple copyrights in a song. The person who wrote the song can have a copyright in the music composition and lyrics, the band that first records it can have a copyright in their particular sound recording, and someone else who performs it publicly can have a copyright in the video of that performance. I.e., there isn't a single "one size fits all" copyright in the song.

        There are interesting questions about whether Prince actually does have a copyright concerning his public performance, when that video was recorded by someone else. However, this isn't an open-and-shut case of "Prince is being an idiot."

        Thom didn't like the effect 'Creep' had on the US market because it was kinda samey to the genre we had at the time; it was Yet Another Alternative Song, despite its being awesome. I guess he thought, rightly, that Americans would see their future works as not up to par - that's where the music review idiots came in and verified his fears.

        All in all, though, it hasn't harmed Radiohead as much as anyone thinks in the US.

If you read the article besides the headline it also says "the purple one" has shut down his gay website and promised to sue any site that does not filter the content. I'm sure the label did not shut down the site themselves as web sites are an source of nearly free advertising, and advertising = money.

    Prince's show was like out of the Disney channel compared to Water's dark side of the moon.

    Besides, his Creep version wasn't nearly as good as the original.
