- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why worry? Watching RIAA struggle against the changing times makes for great comedy. When you understand they *can't* win, it makes it all the more entertaining.
- H_o_p_s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The fact still remains that if you can play it, you can copy it. No matter what DRM software is installed.
- lowrydr310, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To all you haters who say "why should I have to pay for radio" I suggest you try out Satellite before whining. I've had Sirius before Howard Stern appeared and I'm very satisfied. I can't stand listening to endless commercials and the same boring repetitive trash songs that the radio stations push because they're getting paid by the labels to promote a certain artist. I'll gladly pay $12.95 a month to listen to commercial free radio (the talk stations still have commercials, but the music is commercial free).
Now one issue that this article doesn't take into consideration is the horrible quality of the music that they stream. Despite the content being good, the audio quality for most music stations is marginally acceptable. The talk stations (with the exception of Howard Stern) are horrible and sound WORSE than AM radio. The RIAA argument that it's 'digital content' is moot because although it is digital, most channels are allocated very low bandwitdth and use extremely high compression. Most music stations on both XM and Sirius sound like a 96kbps MP3. - EricG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I listen to XM for free via winamp.. who has to pay ?
- havaloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is an old story. XM is releasing two new devices that are uncrippled in any way.
See http://www.xm411.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=21584 - leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How in the hell can you effectively put DRM on something that produces analog sound output? Just run a cable from the headphone jack into the input jack on your sound card, and press the friggin record button.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they bend over and take it, I suggest a PriceRitePhoto-like response from the digg community.
1) Cancel your subscription.... get your Howard stern off of Bittorrent like everyone else.
2) Tell them why you canceled
3) send 1GB of junk traffic to their servers (not condoned by me, completely optional. I assume no responsibility for your actions.)
If you don't want us to listen to "your" music on MP3-only players, we just wont listen to it at all. - digikill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2***** them, they are not producing anything even worth stealing. If you want music, go see a local show. Buy directly from the artist if possible, if not...don't buy period.
- naples, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"osiriscky3 - agreed. You do not have to pay to listen to radio. You also do not have to pay to watch tv. I'm willing to bet you pay for cable. I don't pay for TV, but I do pay for Sirius, and I can't stand FM. There is a value there, but it is up to the consumer - not some idea that xyz *should* be free."
i agree totally.
i pay for cable internet and sirius radio.
i hate TV and i refuse to watch it. same with music, its ***** TRASH and i refuse to buy it. Besides, i have over 30GB's of it on my PC incase i feel the need to listen to it. Burn baby burn...
***** the RIAA, Goveremnt, FM, and cable TV. - dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh for the... would you people please just grow up and comment productively. This place gets stupider every day I swear. Do some research before some of you let your fingers run free on the keyboard. I personally am an XM listener and love it. Each company has their pros and cons however, I won't deny it. But come on, do better than "f*ck this" or "f*ck that" as it makes you look like you have no common sense.
Now for clarification; as of the end of 2005, Sirius Satellite Radio has a total of 3,316,560 subscribers. XM Satellite Radio has a total of 5,933,000 subscribers.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Gotta love the RIAA, teaching business's how to loose morals every day...
Step 1:
all your paying customers are now criminals and theives
Step 2:
Punish the paying customers for the actions of the non paying ones by disabling most of the features they thought they were paying for
Step 3:
?????
Step 4:
PROFIT!!!

http://www.jobseekusa.com - IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope Howard Stern freaking leaves satellite radio if they DRM it... heh
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahahahaha the RIAA is deffinitley looking desperate now, i wouldnt be surprised if they died in a year or two.
- ssocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The RIAA is the exact reason that people pirate music. The music industry grew more than it had for quite a while during the whole "Napster" era but they are too stupid to actually check the numbers and believe them
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Both satellite companies are at the mercy of the RIAA and both parties know it. A previous poster says the Pioneer Inno is not compromised. We will have to wait until they are released to know.
Hoo Hoo, I invented subpar radio, tell'em Fred.
O&A Party Rock - kaoru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"RIAA wants to ruin XM with DRM"
Enough acronyms for you? - AaronD12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds like FUD. Who cares if there is DRM on your XM signal? Unless you're trying to digitally record from your home receiver's digital output to a recorder (or computer) with a digital input, you're not going to be affected. Just record the analog output.
How many people out there are actually ripping the digital output from XM? Do they not know that XM's audio signal is compressed? The analog output will sound 95% as good as the digital output.
Don't get me wrong. I hate the RIAA's tactics, too, but I don't think adding DRM to XM is going to make any difference at all. It might obsolete 3-year-old XM receiver which means XM will have to give me an upgrade to continue being a subscriber. - pdkrocul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0radink: "XM stock hovers around $30 a share Vs. Sirius's $6. Do the math."
OK, I did. XM $28.29 x 222.2M shares = $6.3B market cap. Sirius $6.34 x 1.3B shares = $8.5B market cap. Share price doesn't mean anything if you ignore the number of shares available. Also, what does this have to do with DRM and RIAA? - Soumac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you RTFA, it's not just XM, it's Sirius too.
From TFA:
"When Sirius launched the S50 last year which has the ability to record songs, the RIAA had started negotiations with them over this device and in December, the device’s features were crippled to make it as difficult as possible to record individual songs and schedules were limited to 2 hours." - sjrberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, it's the RIAA, ruining the good things in life is the reason they exist--or so one would think. Heh.
- knowitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Some one need to put that dog (RIAA) down before it eats the county.
- crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RIAA will continue to fight a losing battle until the end of the world.
- dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still don't understand the high value place on Stern. It cost Sirius a pretty penny. I mean yeah he has alot of listeners but really.
- 71M80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you dont give them money they cant survive. say no to itunes. say no to all paid media. Eventually we wont have to put up with this *****.
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This only reinforces my resolve never to purchase another RIAA product again. F*ck the greedy bastards.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"RIAA will continue to fight a losing battle until the end of the world"
agreed. - snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They just won't learn will they? Putting DRM on XM won't stop the piracy. They just don't get it that no matter what they do, piracy will remain.
- TuxFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RIAA. Stupid, lame, 20th century industrial association. MBAs should understand by now that IT and communications technology has changed the rules of business some. Why buy a CD when I could get music through iTunes? Or even free Net radio channels? Or even radio (not free since it funded by RIAA's subsidies our gov gives them like candy). They should look at the available tech and see how it can expand their biz and make a profit instead of whining and wanting these contracts and Congressional bills.
RIAA should understand that capitalism requires changes and innovations. Otherwise, it's just a lamer version of communism (which is an incomplete economic philosophy).
Oh, yeah. Stop feeding the monster and support 21st century businesses. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** the RIAA. Turn your radio off and buy music from the Indies. This is the best way to combat them.
- Nightfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't believe how many idiots here don't RTFA. The RIAA is in negotiations with both providers, XM and Sirius. On a side note, Sirius and XM are sure a hell of a lot better than the alternative....AM and FM. I have XM, my parents have Sirius, and that much I can agree with. Both have great programming, sports, commercial free music, and most importantly, make radio so much better to listen to.
- DuoMaxWell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** the riaa. they ruin everything. rnrnhoo hoo i invented being a money grubbing douche, tell em fred
xm is a great service i have never had one problem with it. even with the fm modulator the sound is great. the only reason why the riaa wont ***** with sirius is because there tech is so far behind they cannot record live sat feeds - JeffD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"***** the government, I want free *****."
But seriously, current IP laws work against the public interest. So I chose to ignore them. Case closed. - ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when will the RIAA learn to stop wasting their time and money...im starting to think piracy IS going to kill the undustry because the RIAA is spending so much money on trying to STOP piracy. Piracy isn't the problem, its the attempting to controll music that's the problem.
GAH! - kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Y'know what? I say let the recording industry die, because that means the end of all the big recording companies and labels, and an opportunity for the little guys to take their place.
Worried about the artists? They'll benefit more than anyone if the recording industry crashes.
It's hardly a big deal if the recording industry dies.
*****, who cares. - cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've tried both and I love XM. XM has a much larger subscriber base and own Worldspace so it's content is available in many countries around the world.
The only reason many people buy Sirius is for Howard Stern or NFL.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0riaa is bad
- nebrfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's why I don't listen to their music.
http://www.saddlecreek.com
Some of it sucks, but its original - azar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Monticello you are retarded. I bet you work for the RIAA, seeing how you think Guitar tab distribution should be banned and how you want to have butt sex with the RIAA. Burn in hell man.
- dpknc84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The arguement over "who would pay for radio" is moot as there are obviously millions that do. Depending on what plan you get it's not that expensive and the benefits of not having about 10 minutes of commercials every hour are a plus for me. I prefer to hear music and don't have alot of time in my day to program my own content.
Why do people always expect everything for free. - paulypopex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is total BS!!! I don't know what I'm talking about, but I'm frikkin' annoyed! Anyone who ever bought a record can go to hell, the music industry should be paying me!!!
That's how I read most of the posts above. - slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Satellite radio has bigger issues to worry about, like an over the hill jock getting paid $100 million a year to do four days a week of subpar radio and only work 9 months out of the year."
waaaahhhh! . . . I'm jealous about a 52 yr old disc jockey getting paid $500 million over 5 years to do satellite radio . . . waaaahhhh! - Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The music industry will kill itself (as we know it) eventually. They will buck the trend, then embrace it only too late. Support independent music & quit listening to image-is-everything, studio-only performers put together by focus groups.
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay. That's just greedy and evil. Artists make TONS of money over radio with ASCAP funds. Just because it's POSSIBLE to record digital music from XM doesn't mean that enough people really want to. That would be a pain in the ass.
Nobody makes me want to steal music more than the RIAA. - bennyb1anco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jesus christ, when will you morons get it?!
In the 70's, if you tried really really hard, you might be able to share that taped ANALOG copy with like 30 friends. More like 5 though.
Now, thanks to P2P and torrents, you can *effortlessly* share a DIGITAL copy with thousands or more.
That's the problem. The scope and scale are *radically* different from when those laws were written.
------------------------------------------
Great, the RIAA is using this logic to completely throw ANY concept of fair use completely out the window. What exactly has changed over the past 20 years that invalidates the right to fair use?
Not to say that all DRM is inherently evil, the level present in ITunes seems fairly benign to me. To hear these RIAA execs talk, if each consumer doesn't pay a fee for each song heard on each different medium they are getting run out of business.
They are in serious need of being corrrrrrrecccted!!! - salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really pity you poor people who have crap radio - viva la Tripple J - Australia's national radio station, promotes independant music, doesn't suck at the teet of major record labels, gives away free music legally ( http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/listen/mp3s.htm ), has embraced the podcast... all without advertisments.
- anthony1124, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i am looking forward to the demise of the "music industry" music doesn't need business to survive. those who love it should play it. those who love it should listen to it. leave it at that. these people have no ***** ethics. they're EVIL.
- frequencyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the RIAA is just despriate at this point..i'll just be glad when it's finally all over and they fade away.
