- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+330I'm waiting for the RIAA to sue itself for publishing music.
- Dycacian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+188FTA - "These f***ing idiots are going after a campaign that the label signed off on." Priceless
- halofourteen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+181What douchebags.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+137Well maybe he shouldn't distribute his music through them.
- HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+84And people wonder why Trent bitches about record companies so much.
- percent3f, on 10/12/2007, -6/+79You guys don't understand, the RIAA are just trying to protect the artist's freedom.
(yes, it's sarcasm) - HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+62@catalysis
"Well maybe he shouldn't distribute his music through them."
He really shouldn't frankly. NIN has a strong loyal fan base, and he certainly doesn't need to prove anything with record sales. He could easily distribute his releases privately online. Well, future releases anyway, probably not the back catalog, and IIRC Year Zero fullfills his current contract, so maybe he will.
US TO TRENT: ***** it man, ditch the labels and the headaches. - Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46Quake soundtrack was pretty tight.
- SlvrEagle23, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44Guys, we need to settle on a coherent, unified message. I think what we're all trying to say is...
***** THE RIAA - phuchead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34@catalysis:
"Well maybe he shouldn't distribute his music through them."
He is stuck in a contract, and he only has two more albums left on it, that being year_zero and the next one... then he is talking about doing something different, but in a post to [the_spiral] the official nin fan club

Hi Trent,
I'm just wondering what your stance and / or thoughts are on the RIAA, DRM, and the current state of copyright issues regarding music sales and use.
Cheers for all of the amazing music you have provided us with throughout the years.

I've come up with an equation on that topic.
RIAA = *****
DRM = *****
and @HunterTV:
he is leaving labels, from the rest of the latest post that he made. - sigsegfalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Way to protect the artist, RIAA.
- digital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Year Zero is leaked (real cd high quality) .... on torrent site nows.
But buy the cd to support Trent not anyone else. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32If you're paying fifteen dollars for a CD, you're either a tool or a Canadian.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Record labels make more money from CDs than any other product the band sells. Bands make money from concerts.
Just pirate the album and go see them live a few times :) - 1ShotJake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21As if the universal.de wasn't illinformed enough. ***** need to be dropped on their head, and reminded where their paychecks ACTUALLY comes from.
Yet still a defiance of supply and demand, we tell them to ***** off, and yet they still supply the *****. - Zombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I remember reading all the time that the RIAA was suing people that didn't even own computers. This really needs to stop soon. I think they have made enough money by now.
- wolfger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Sometimes I think the RIAA executives are in a "how lame can you be" competition...
- bitteroldmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18@phlezk
This was before the whole album had leaked, when it was just the songs leaked via USB drives by NIN at the concerts (and the radio singles). Read it before you bury it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18That's the dumbest ***** I've ever heard.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I'd give it time. Congress doesn't like these ***** making a mockery of our legal system as much as anyone else. Sooner or later they'll get careless and make a mistake which would leave them vulnerable to a counter suit. Who knows, maybe it'll be a class action, which would have a huge list of people who are just thirsty for blood.
- resnasty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16who the hell still references Mike Tyson in regards to his beat down ability... he hasn't won a fight in years
- deviationer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17oh my ***** god
- Easty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Christ.
That is all. - djrhettmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I hope "The Presence" god-arm thing comes down to smite teh RIAA lawyers. Don't care if it takes until 2012 or whenever YEAR ZERO supposedly happens. JUST TO HOLD YOU DOWN!
- willistg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Is there any one left that has even a shred of a belief that the RIAA represents the artists?
- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@brstilon, did you even RTFA? First off, these "leaks" are from Reznor himself. They are high quality mp3's. 192kb. These releases are INTENTIONAL, this isn't some a$$hat stealing them, NIN did this intentionally, it's called viral marketing.
Reznor also releases the orginal tracked mixing available for you to download and remix how you wish. These are high quality pieces to work with. - DrScott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Round one?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Inch_Nails#Corporate_entanglements - devzer0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9In other news, the RIAA has announced that it will begin suing people who download music from iTunes. "Downloading music is illegal, even if you pay for it," said industry spokesman Dick Harbor.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You're an idiot.
Trent cannot do ***** because he is still in contract with Interscope.
After 2 more albums releases, he'll be free. But until then, no chance. - straxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Little Mac?
- fantasmacanino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I think it's a crime to pay 15 dollars for a couple of good songs on a CD. The only artists who should be complaining about their music being downloaded are the ones who release a couple of hits and fill the rest of their album with crappy music. Bands who aren't signed to a big record label are reaping the benefits: The Shins' last album became the biggest seller in Sub Pop's history, for example.
- javaroast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@frog1981
John Carricaburu quit spamming digg. I for one promise to never use gigatribe and to tell anyone I can not to use it either. - future15tbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8At what point is the RIAA going to realize that distribution of music is MARKETING? and that expanded distribution will increase sales, not dimish them. Good lord, this is a perfect example of the legal department not having a single clue how actual business gets done. At some point, I hope the executives of the member companies of RIAA reign in the legal arm. They are fighting a loosing battle that is against their own long-term interests.
- robinator08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@frog1981
Why are you spamming gigatribe?
"All data exchanged on your network is encrypted (Blowfish encryption with a 128-bit key)." (taken from gigatribe link...)
Sorry, but blowfish isn't particularly strong encryption and using 128-bit blowfish is like using a 32-bit key for better known / trusted agorythmns.
Minus points on the template based web page instead of having real information also. - sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@catalysis: Go to the NIN Year Zero site (yearzero.nin.com) and you can listen to the entire album in fairly high quality right on the site. While it's not quite cutting out a label from the whole thing, it's more than most artists do.
Even then, I doubt he'd ever totally ditch a record label, since I'm sure he doesn't mind getting the money to record. Interscope has let him do pretty much whatever he's wanted to do (including two concept albums, a 2-CD album, and even a remix album that went gold), given him control over the singles he releases (unless he presents them with an album and asks them to do it)... His label has been pretty good to him over the years, it's the RIAA that he hates with a passion. He seems to be one of the only artists of his stature that understands that piracy shouldn't be a major concern, and that things are moving to a digital platform and CD sales will continue to decrease in importance as other means of distribution (ie. "leaked" USB thumb drives) become available for the masses. - tibisor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Round Two:
http://digg.com/music/Listen_to_Year_Zero_Nine_Inch_Nails - Sithlrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+710 bucks on Trent
- dafragsta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'll join in on a chorus of "***** the RIAA" but saying it's stupid to pay $15 for a CD because you only like 2 or 3 songs and the band shouldn't fill up their album with crappy songs, is a ***** copout. Either shamelessly download the music or go buy it. Don't stand in the middle with an excuse for not going either way.
If a band knew how to make every song on an album a hit, they would. I can't think of a single album in the history of music in which every song was of the same worth to the fans. Even Led Zeppelin's first 5 albums had a couple of so-so songs. "The Crunge" was the beginning of the end for those guys. - sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You remember? they're STILL doing that, to this day!
- ThecNiqueMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6David Bowie to the rescue!
- CancerBomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You can listen to Year Zero in its entirety right now at http://yearzero.nin.com/ .

^Album cover.
Trent is certainly making this a unique experience and the RIAA can't stand it - joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5it's dead already. repost it anyone?
- mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Chicago rock radio station, Q101, is to play the entire new NIN album at 2pm CST today. They also were involved in some problems with the RIAA.
Here is their live stream address: http://www.streamaudio.com/stations/player/pages/newplayer/index_win.asp?Owner=&public=&headertext=&Station=WKQX_FM&Mac=No&OptIn=no&Streamtype=&filename= - supaphly42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@idonthack... that's what i generally do. i'll dl random cd's, and if i really like the band, i'll check them out in concert. i've done that with a lot of bands now, worked out quite well for me and them. =)
- bongo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Remember to use http://www.riaaradar.com/ to check if you're supporting the RIAA by buying an album. Don't give them money, they'll just use it to sue paraplegic orphan children!
- Matri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'd rather see his ear get bitten off.
- skatterbrainz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The writing has been on the wall for years: music will soon be published directly to the Internet by the bands themselves. The need for agents will remain as long as tours still happen. The need for RIAA will evaporate.
