- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -17/+419***** the RIAA.
- indiefan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+325The worst news isn't that she lost (her case was week to begin with), it's the $9,250 per song.
- ninxmz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+217Well, that sucks.
How the ***** did they settle on $9250 per song? - ProfessorLX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+193good luck collecting that. i hope she files for bankruptcy.
id also like to give the jurors a ***** smack. - carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+161And exactly how much of that $222,000 is going to go the artists the RIAA is trying to "protect"?
- WombatBob, on 10/12/2007, -7/+154While I don't agree with the amount per song that the jury awarded the plaintiffs, it was pretty clear, if you followed the trial, that she did download songs illegally. Whether you agree, disagree, or don't care, this case does set a precedence for the RIAA that will likely have a profound effect on how these sorts of cases are pursued in the future.
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 10/10/2007, -5/+143It's pretty funny how sick the people are to sue for that much from one person. She wasn't making money off of the songs, and now she's a single mother in debt.
GOD BLESS AMERICA
GO Freedom! - sfacets, on 10/10/2007, -7/+141Ooooo I am never going to buy music or DVD's ever again.
- edgeofreason, on 10/10/2007, -5/+135The RIAA may have won this battle, but they're still going to lose the war.
- neurosport, on 10/10/2007, -6/+134now remember kids, when you are buying records you're supporting RIAA, the ***** who want single mothers to starve to death
record money supports terrible things ...
so when it comes to buying records JUST SAY NO - fantasticFlan, on 10/15/2007, -0/+120Random number generator.
- xaxxon, on 10/10/2007, -5/+116In Capitalistic United States, the RIAA ***** YOU.
- bjs3171, on 10/10/2007, -7/+106how the hell is a single mother supposed to pay that? isn't she jsut completely ***** now? welfare?
- MadHermit, on 10/10/2007, -6/+95The RIAA has the strangest way of showing appreciation towards music lovers. I am fed up wth them. We should all stop buying music on major labels and just listen to indie.
- samurimaster, on 10/10/2007, -6/+92A. ***** the riaa
B. where the hell is a single mother going to get 222,000 dollars - stronglikedan, on 10/10/2007, -9/+91This is the epitome of perversion of justice.
...and the rich just get richer. - DrMilkdad, on 10/10/2007, -2/+84The jury has no idea what they've just done
- xOKxWhy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+86Why are they suing for so much per song? Couldn't they just sue for $.99 for each downloaded song?
- anaravia, on 10/10/2007, -3/+81It's still not going to stop me.
- foobnum, on 10/10/2007, -7/+80This story is very depressing... I was rooting for the mom...
- JoeCoT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+62Bankruptcy doesn't work against lawsuit awards. Notice OJ Simpson loses every cent he makes, because he still owns the Goldmans.
If she cannot pay, the RIAA can motion for garnishment, meaning that her employer would have to withhold up to 25% of her wages.
They may never get the entire sum, but they will ruin her life. - CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -3/+62Should have been $1 per song, which is about $.70 more than they are actually worth...
- psevium, on 10/10/2007, -2/+60Even if she did, I don't know how they can agree that 9k is a ***** good amount to pay per song. Plus now we know the RIAA will probably launch a ***** more lawsuits after this
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+59they took $10,000 and subtracted a $750 bulk order savings.
- rspeed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+53I agreed with you until that last sentence. $220,000 is a ridiculous fee for something they can't even prove had damaged them.
- LethalAmbition, on 10/10/2007, -3/+51We found the RIAA's Digg account guys.
- orelses, on 10/10/2007, -3/+50Time to boycott paid music online and off-line for the next 6 months.
- scallon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+48Nine grand per ***** song!? Are you kidding me? How about a dollar per song. Thats what she would have payed to download it off iTunes. Hell, the record company doesn't even get the whole dollar. Time to see how the appeal goes.
- das7282, on 10/10/2007, -2/+46This kind of ***** makes me NOT want to buy any more music. In fact it "almost" makes me want to pirate music just to screw the music companies.
- DarkSideofOZ, on 10/10/2007, -4/+47A. File for bankrupcy.
B. Move to Canada/Europe/Australia
C. Tell Riaa to ***** off. - gyronic, on 10/10/2007, -8/+49I've been to Duluth, Minnesota.
For *****, they just got color television in 1989.
How is a jury up there going to understand new-fangled things like IP addresses? - EvanVolm, on 10/10/2007, -4/+45222,000/9250=24. 24 songs. Jesus....***** the RIAA.
- byrdgang, on 10/10/2007, -4/+44Truth be told, her lawyer sounded desperate, and didn't have much of a case. The record companies had a strong case. She shouldn't have wasted her time and money. She should have settled. Now she has to pay her lawyer (for a job that apparently wasn't done that well) and the record companies.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -11/+49Laws don't apply to single mothers?
- hellathatguy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+43those damn *****, at least radiohead is leading the way to topple those RIAA *****.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+37Agreed. It should be more like $24 (the average going rate for 24 songs) and lawyer's fees. But that's just wishful thinking.
- JoshuaLowe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35How on Earth did they come up with that valuation? That is a perversion of justice, I just don't know what else to think. This a truly sad day.
- xaxxon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36weak
- dinostabOMG, on 10/10/2007, -1/+35She should move to Sweden.
- Dizbuster, on 10/10/2007, -6/+39Boy, this is going to raise peoples' opinions of the RIAA through the stratosphere.
- Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33to be fair (and I do hate the RIAA) skimming through the claims against Thomas lead me to believe that Thomas did in fact use kazzaa.
of course the $9,250 figure seems absurdly high. - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -2/+31This is the RIAA, pirates in the sense of how much greed they have. Do you really think they're going to sue for $.99?
- kabitoSDMF, on 10/10/2007, -16/+45***** Kazaa.
- lemonsensation, on 10/10/2007, -8/+36She must appeal!!!
- hypnotoad32, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28Get the 25th song for just one penny!
- magiusfox, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32thats roughly 6000 copies of each song. A sad day indeed. She will probably file chapter 7 and the RIAA will get $0.00 but they still won a case setting a precedent.
- barius, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28I agree that the evidence was pretty clear, but I think the RIAA is only shooting themselves in the foot with this 'win'. They are suing their own customers, and whether or not she is guilty, she represents a line that the industry cannot un-cross.
The RIAA has sentenced this woman to a life of poverty for what most 'humanitarians' would call a petty crime. It couldn't be worse if they had chopped off her left hand like they do in the middle-east. The RIAA is already a pariah, this is only going to cement their demise. - dgh1973, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Not good.
- sibhod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Someone paying $9,000 for downloading a song is far from the epitome of justice.
- jvworldwide, on 10/10/2007, -8/+33worst ruling evur! Rest assured I'll be on the interwebs within seconds, registering my disgust around the world...
