RIAA guilty of Price Fixing? NY is investigating...
p2pnet.net — This time they're not going after Sony and it's rootkit. The State of New York is investigating PRICE FIXING by the RIAA and a possible violation of Anti-Trust Law. --- "Any evidence that executives had agreed to offer similar terms or wholesale prices to companies like Apple and Napster could trigger an antitrust lawsuit against the companies".

- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know about the letter of the law, or any of the nitty gritty details. I do think that it's pretty obvious that the record lables have conspired on price. All the singles on iTunes are 99c right?
- TigerX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, but "obvious" and the legal burden of proof don't always match.
- FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But wait a sec.. Didn't we have a settlement a few years ago were we all got $9 checks as a refund for the over pricing of music CDs?
- Zonkzor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1RIAA pricefixing? Now that's just crazy talk. I really don't see how they can be allowed to be a monopoly like this while Microsoft is shat on constantly.

How To Be A http://CollegeCheapskate.com - nicheplayer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0No matter how many times I see it, the misuse of "it's" doesn't get any easier to take. You'd think it would, eventually.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not the RIAA..they love consumers
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0nicheplayer... sorry about that... It's just a thing, you see...

old news, no digg. - Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like anything is going to happen to them.
- redman5419, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Misuse of "it's"? His statement was "I do think that it's pretty obvious ..." as in "I do think that IT IS pretty obvious..." Unless, of course, you're not referring to the misuse of the possessive form. If you are referring to that, then I'm afraid you're mistaken.
- Speak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And someone uses the sarcastic "in other news," comment; signaling a very early death for the comments page of this Digg. Honestly though, in the case of user responses here it is far better to burn out than to fade away.
- HottSauce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"No matter how many times I see it, the misuse of "it's" doesn't get any easier to take. You'd think it would, eventually."
It doesn't bother the people who misuse it. Ignorance is bliss. - Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its guilty of it, but so what? It has more money and owns more politicians in more countries than the USA can actually do anything about, at this point. So pay up. As long as people are willing to cough up the price, they'll keep charging it.
- HottSauce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"Misuse of "it's"? His statement was "I do think that it's pretty obvious ..." as in "I do think that IT IS pretty obvious..." No he's referring to the statement: This time they're not going after Sony and it's rootkit. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0redman: I believe he was referring to "This time they're not going after Sony and it's rootkit."
- Mattman723, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the RIAA should sue the State of New York for its use of the Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" without royalties.
- opus20745, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0redman, the comment about "it's" was in reference to the story itself. Read the first sentence.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone with half a brain cell knows the recording industry has been inflating their prices rather than letting them depreciate over time. That Lionel Richie album from 1988 you bought last week that NO ONE ELSE IN THE WORLD WILL EVER KNOW ABOUT (*cough*) cost you $19.99 for some odd reason, despite the work being nearly two decades old.
If only car pricing worked like that ^_^ - Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think Eliot Spitzer would wrestle God if he felt cheated.
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG! RIAA would never do such a thing.
- Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hasn't Spitzer been investigating this for quite awhile now? I'm not really sure how this is current news?
- redman5419, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...and here I thought he was referring to the first comment as the comment author responded to it. My bad, I stand corrected.
- Spencerocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I can't wait to see RIAA executives on cops, they'll be running and hopping fences and stuff, bad boys bad boys.. what you gon' do when they come for you?
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gee, I never have to worry about them getting too much of my money because I've boycotted their CD's for YEARS. All of their artists suck so bad it's very easy to ignore them.
- SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0the RIAA are Dicks!
- stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess AllofMp3 didn't get the minimum cost per song memo.
- mc_hambone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0People, when you submit a story, and the exact same story comes back (http://digg.com/music/New_York_goes_after_the_RIAA), DON'T FRICKING POST IT AGAIN! grrrrr. And, as I commented on that story, NY IS NOT GOING AFTER THE RIAA!!!! They are going after several record companies (there is a difference). The term "RIAA" is not even in the story!
- colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anybody actually read the article? RIAA has nothing to to with it. The entire article is kinda difficult to understand. record labels are pressuring online download-based music retailers to up prices. I don't know why this article is against the so-called 'Big four" (Apple, Napster etc.) , which are not monopolizing. So read before you comment.
- colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woops i misread the thing abotu the big four...my bad.
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RIAA guilty of existing. Penalty? DEATH
- jsnkc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" That Lionel Richie album from 1988 you bought last week that NO ONE ELSE IN THE WORLD WILL EVER KNOW ABOUT (*cough*) cost you $19.99 for some odd reason, despite the work being nearly two decades old."
So nice classic cars should be sold for $50 because they are old? Your reasoning makes absolutely no sense....not everything depreciates. - twollamalove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hahaha. nicheplayer, you idiot, monolith's usage of the contraction "it's" is the proper usage. When contracting "it" and "is", the spelling is "it's", with the apostrophe. When using its as a possessive, there is no apostrophe. The only thing more annoying than a grammar correction is a wrong grammar correction. Hahaha. I'm sorry, we've all got pet peeves. Yours is the correct contraction of it and is, while mine is grammar incorrections (please no one correct this "misspelling").
- xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Little as I like the RIAA, or the record companies it represents, this article pretty much sucked. It would provide a sentence or two of factual news, then proceed to exhaustively elaborate with a polemic. If I wanted to read people bitching about the RIAA instead of news concerning the prosecution of record companies, I'd just read the digg comments about that same story.
- twollamalove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I worked so hard on keeping my post to perfect English, and I've got a ***** comma splice. Hahaha.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yea ***** THE RIAA!
- Deguello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The RIAA...I am going to name my first born RIAA Bush...
- drn666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I guess AllofMp3 didn't get the minimum cost per song memo."
They also didn't get the "operating legally" memo, i guess. By AllofMp3.com's own admission, they're not so much "legal" as they are "too difficult to prosecute for being illegal due to Russia's dodgy copyright laws". - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just loathe the RIAA.
BTW: Guys, this isn't a freaking English language class. Please stop all the off-topic grammar discussion. - orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can remember that pie chart over a CD of where the 15 bucks of a cd went. I can bet that will be on a nice, big piece of osterboard in teh courtroom soon
- bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Elliot Spitzer v. Recording Industry....why can't they both end up as losers? :(
I'm sure that if this does go to litigation, the increased price of music downloads will become an inevitability. Ultimately, expenses like this get shoved off on to the consumer. If the article is correct, the disparity in prices charged (60-90 cents / download) to retailers is almost a guarantee that price fixing hasn't been taking place.
Finally, I'm able to pay for the individual songs I want, rather than a full album....where's the problem here? Spitzer needs to go away, IMO. - mrfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Click your red slippers together RIAA and speak aloud no place like jail no place like jail ....i hope they all set their head on fire!
I pray that they will all get fired or in trouble or layed off or die what ever comes first.
GO ***** YOUR SELF RIAA! - mrfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I guess AllofMp3 didn't get the minimum cost per song memo."
yeah good one! - SidewalkPilot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm sick of people bad-mouthing the RIAA. The only people who have to worry about the RIAA are those who steal music.
- Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The article was poorly written, and the juiciest quotes the guy could find were that Jonathan Potter of the Digital Media Association expects this to get "full-blown," and that "Everybody expects to be contacted, and some already have been." Yeah, baby, sounds like they're progressing by leaps and bounds there.
- antihexe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm sick of people bad-mouthing the RIAA. The only people who have to worry about the RIAA are those who steal music.
