http://www.gmailinvitation.com - Mark_H, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can tell that piracy is really hurting those guys.
- MRT1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea and i thought the artists were being hurt.
- kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And major label artists are cancelling tours. Their vans break down and the tour is over.

http://www.diggfans.com - suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im going to stop stealing music, they just arent able to survive on those crap salaries.
- JKimball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm so happy cd prices are going up in order to pay these guys salaries
- hipsterelitist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i totally thought they'd be making more. i mean they make a lot, but that doesn't seem like all that much compared to a lot of pissant real estate brokers in bubble markets, etc.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im sure they do make more. this is just the legal amount that they actually pay taxes on.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's where all the Music Industries money is going, not piracy...
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Oh no, people are making money! It's called capitalism, get a job.
- philovivero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Um. Jack Valenti works for the RIAA? Oh. If you actually read the article, you see those are MPAA employees. Right.
- f1gm3nt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hhmmm, capitalism? WTF?! That's GREED! Don't BITCH about not making money and that p2p takes away from artist. I'm sure that if the artists saw those figures they would be pissed.
I've been looking into incorporating my business and it seems that if enough people complain and say that you make too much that the IRS can step in and make you pay less to yourself. I'm not real sure about it but I'm going to look into it again. - johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those guys make a lot, but the actual artists make a lot lot more (think Eminem, Mariah Carey and so on - they make loads more than these execs). Balancing, not docking, is probably in order here...
- Mattrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not that they are making money... It's how they are making it!
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If the record execs spread the wealth the music ecosystem wouldn't be the wreck it is now. I guess you reap what you sow.
- NGC6656, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't you get it??? Now they can't afford to fly in a Gulfstream 4 jet and have to use a crappy Gulfstream 3. The Gulfstream 3 DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A 51" PLASMA, WTF?????
- copperkidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish there was a way I could donate via PayPal to those guys. I feel so ashamed that they aren't getting a larger percentage of my paychecks. Maybe I should cancel my subscription to Rev3 so they can each afford a gold plated jacuzzi.
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well maybe they were right, downloading DOES hurt the artists because THEIR salaries sure aren't hurting..
but honestly those aren't as high as i would have thought. i don't think these salaries say much of anything about anything. - FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, a few hundred thousand is not nearly as bad most Fortune 500 coroporate execs. In fact, a few hundred thousand doesn't even put you out of "upper middle-class". If you make $200k a year, you cannot afford a private jet. Maybe you can hire one, once and a while.
Although, there's a question of what kind of stock options, etc, they get. Much like Steve Job's salary is only $1/yr. He really makes tons on his stock. - Duston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't see why there is an immediate outcry of GREED! every time someone with a six figure salary has it published? Regardless of their legal tactics there is nothing morally wrong to make a truckload of money.
BTW, stealing from the rich is still stealing. - copperkidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So we are a world of Robin Hoods...
- XorSystem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my guilt overwhelms me... some people actually had to live off of a salary that doesn't hit a million?
Sorry guys.. just can't take my selfishness anymore...
I just never knew a $12 CD was so damaging... - Ribald_Jester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly - who is going to believe that any of these people only make that much - and that both the RIAA and MPAA are "in trouble"?
Hollywood is *famous* for it's deceptive and fraudulent accounting practices, and regularly cheat many artists and creative types out of their rightfully earned money. Lying to the IRS and claiming fake losses is just another tactic by these sleazebags. - m0laria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We should all ritually seppuku for offending the honor of these fine organizations.
- joe_mama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm so sad, some people are sooo poor, they can only get music buy downloading it off their 3mbit highspeed broadband onto their 3ghz PC and upload to their $300 ipod.
- joe_mama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RIAA should be ashamed of themselves!!!! some people are sooo poor, they can only get music by downloading it off their 3mbit highspeed broadband onto their 3ghz PC and upload to their $300 ipod.
> - Aspero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's less then i expected
- joe_mama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actully Movie celebrities get too much money. Jim Carrey get 20 million dollar per film, w00t.
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Artists dont make much: http://www.arancidamoeba.com/mrr/problemwithmusic.html
The Record Companies are practically theives... A $250,000 signing will only net each member $4,000 each, while they still owe on merchandice - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Course those are entering artists. If you sell a huge amount, you will get a contract, then you make the big money, but you have also just sold out to them, they own you.
- schrags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Artists don't get the money, the RIAA doesn't get the money. So 51 frekin million is going just to sueing little children and 1-million dollar salaries?
- joe_mama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People bash MPAA too even though actors and actresses get plenty of money, so i doubt people hate MPAA/RIAA because they care for artists.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0
'BTW, stealing from the rich is still stealing.'
Yawn.
And copyright infringement *still* isn't stealing. Again. - Duston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Splitting hairs MarkByers?
Okay, "Accessing copyrighted material you don't have rights to, produced by the rich, is still accessing copyrighted material you don't have rights to."
Fell better? - MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course these figures do not include the kick backs from movie studios legendary creative accounting offices.
Jack Valenti is a tottering old fool.
He is well known for his 'the sky is falling!' luddite antics. I seem to remember that he was at the center of 'VCRs are evil! EVIL I TELL YOU' nonsense. He predicted that the movie industry would die a painful death at the hands of videos.
So we can clearly see that Jack has a Steve Jobs-like sense of the future.
Not. - Zeuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The more I read about the RIAA and MPAA the more it sounds like the Mafia!
Why are they still in operation to start with? The IRS should open the books on these guys and you'd see a lot of accounting iregularities.
To RIAA and MPAA employees: There's whistle blower protection now so use it to get back at that multi-millionaire boss that ***** on your head every day. - allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, they're wealthy. But it's still theft. I understand the logic of the youth today though, "I want it really bad so it can't be stealing."
- mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not mad about the other guys- I'm mad about the CEO
same as all those other charities and organizations that advocate "rights" etc. BS BS BS BS!! all BS. it's a shame how generally stupid the public is sometimes. - Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those salaries dont mean much.
You think they actually bought the car they drive with their own salary?
How about the every day expenses that they can pass off as buisness related?
How about the house they live in? - Quest-Master, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Digg. The guys listed are of the MPAA, not RIAA.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jack Valenti (or however you spell his name) spoke at my graduation. He is a complete tool.
- cwl157, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the riaa was never protecting the artists on average the artist only get 15 cents from each cd and the record excutives get a lot more. Artists make money from tours and other merchandise.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, digg must really be a WHOLE lot of poor people if you think low 6 figure salaries are such obscene and grievous salary figures. I feel confused if that's honestly all they're making. Me and my parents making as much as an executive VPs at the MPAA is just an odd feeling. Granted, we're 3 people, but jeez, our jobs don't even compare to what these people are responsible for.
http://www.aflcio.org/corporatewatch/paywatch/
"In 2004, the average CEO of a major company received $9.84 million"
Jack Valenti seems to be totally worthless by comparison. - joe_mama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RIAA/MPAA is not even a company, it's just front end for major hollywood studios and labels.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MY God, those are poverty wages in Hollywood. There are pool boys that do better and they don't have to buy a suit. Why do such talented people deprive them of what they deserve? It must be the love of the arts.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Actually Movie celebrities get too much money. Jim Carrey get 20 million dollar per film"
Exactly, the need to stop paying actors these ridiculous salaries.
"Steal for the rich to entertain the poor."
-A - crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe if I made that much money I could afford to buy all the CD's I want. Until then...
- nocre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've no hard feelings toward people raking in cash. I even let their complete lack of ambition and intelligence on how they should spend said money slide.
What bothers me is when people bitch about how little money they have when they're making well over 6 figures a year. I grew up on less than $5k throughout half of my life. I'm not looking for sympathies, just making a point. You don't need two hundred grand a year to survive. You don't need a new beach house or another car.
That being said, it's very little to do with the intellectual demands of your position. It has to do with how many other people are sitting on the same pedestal as you. You aren't important; you're scarcely necessary. But 'A' company brings in a lot of money and you're the only one doing what you do. Perhaps I believe we should celebrate the common man a bit more in this country; that these expendable workers provide the backbone on which the rest of you stand, but it won't happen. Actors get paid a ton because movies bring in a lot and they're not paying out to millions of people, as well as personal recognition and ego, but hey.
Oh well. My rant got lost somewhere when I lost focus. To summarize, I don't hate the rich, I hate the whiny. -
