- oldhick, on 08/27/2008, -1/+12How hard is it for people to ask a question simply? Why do they have to phrase things so ridiculously? Who's going to say "heck yeah I'm in the pocket of lobbyist!"
Why not simply ask the question "what are your views on digital rights management and copyright law? what rights do you believe consumers should have with products they own?"
Is it that difficult to simply ask a question??? - 5xSTUN, on 08/27/2008, -0/+10Well, of course, where would these companies be without the politicians they've been using to legislate them into profitability?
- xtal3, on 08/27/2008, -0/+9Movie industry has had a great year. The Dark Knight is near 500 Million domestic. What the ***** do they have to complain or lobby about?

- designerutah, on 08/27/2008, -0/+8What I want to know is what would happen to a physicist who took a large collection of music and movies from these two, digitized it, and then beamed it into space using a radio telescope? Essentially, he just shared it with the entire Universe. What would the crime be? What would their claim be? And how high would their damages claim go? I can just hear it now, "Your honor, the defendant beamed our intellectual property to everyone in the Universe. Even allowing for signal degredation, it's possible he reached billions of civilizations!" And then the argument would begin on how to calculate the number of civilizations the signal MIGHT have reached...
Bizarre thought, I know. But when I try to view the world through their eyes, this is what happens! - pigfister, on 08/27/2008, -0/+7ok then, this is what you need to consider;
why would the RIAA want to block you listening to music that they didn't produce? READ THE LINKS PPL!

"With the furor over the impending rate hike for Internet radio stations, wouldn't a good solution be for streaming internet stations to simply not play RIAA-affiliated labels' music and focus on independent artists? Sounds good, except that the RIAA's affiliate organization SoundExchange claims it has the right to collect royalties for any artist, no matter if they have signed with an RIAA label or not. 'SoundExchange (the RIAA) considers any digital performance of a song as falling under their compulsory license. If any artist records a song, SoundExchange has the right to collect royalties for its performance on Internet radio. .... - Ratteler, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5It's perfectly legal for a CITIZEN to lobby.
A Corporation is not an U.S. Citizen because it is not an individual. It has no right to "lobby".
We can, as a people, OUTLAW paid lobbyists. There is no reason some one should be paid to petition the government. It does not alter free speech in the slightest to make illegal for some petitioning Washington to receive to receive compensation for it.
It should also be illegal for any individual to gain preferential access to an elected officials office. It should be first come first serve no matter how much money you have. - TheInformer, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4If everything's ok, the RIAA and MPAA people lose their jobs.

It's this. This right here is why I am actually morally opposed to the purchase of CDs. Everytime you buy a CD, you're giving the record labels just a little bit more money to keep battling against our rights (our rights being the rights of the consumers and the artists).
The only ways I will pay for music:
1) Live in concert
2) The music isn't part of the RIAA... AND... the copyright for the music is held by the artists who created the music, not the label.
Otherwise I can do without - Jameson777, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3The RIAA & MPAA hosting a fundraiser to benefit world poverty? Hahahahahaha...

- Blue_Eon, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I always wonder...who are the common man's lobbyists?
Seems we have no one who represents our best interests in Congress, but every corporation under the sun has someone to get laws, legislation, and other little things passed for their benefit. Rarely does anyone, even the people we vote in, ever have our best interests in mind and besides taxes, we have no real way of using the almighty dollar to get what we want done.

Duke University School of Law, Center for the Study of the Public Domain; Howard University , Institute for Intellectual Property and Social Justice; Jonathan Band, PLLC; Electronic Frontier Foundation; American Library Association; Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School; Gigi Sohn at Public Knowledge
These are some people doing a great job. If you look at the Web site of the U.S. Copyright Office and see links to any hearings, you will see who testifies on behalf of consumers.
