- Enochyang, on 10/12/2007, -16/+400This is how I interpret Radiohead's albums and what they've meant with each release.
Pablo Honey - "Hello. We're Radiohead. This song is called Creep"
The Bends - "***** OFF, critics. We're not a one hit wonder, *****. This album proves we're a million times better than that yet-to-come ***** Chris Martin"
Ok Computer - "***** OFF, mainstream rock. We're going to produce an electro-computerized-guitar-rock album that blows your ***** mind and sets off the alternative craze for generations to come."
Kid A - "***** OFF, commercial success and radio/mtv outlets. We're sick and tired of being so damn glamorized that this album will be so experimental and radio-unfriendly that we're hoping to shed off a bulk of our ***** fans, and yet it will still kick major ***** ass."
Amensiac - (same as "Kid A" but part 2)
Hail to the Thief - "***** OFF, George Bush for stealing the elections. And ***** you if you thought we didn't have it in us to produce a more commercially sound album, again."
In Rainbows - "***** OFF, RIAA! This album kicks insane amounts of ass and you will not make a penny off of it, you dirty money-hording grimy lil' bastards."
And THAT, my friends, is why I have so much damn respect for Radiohead. - jkaechler, on 10/11/2007, -5/+102i am sure that radiohead will make plenty of cash for this method of distribution.
i however, paid nothing.
and now i have given each track an honest listen, and i really don't like them.
so i can delete them, and have paid nothing, and dont feel like a thief.
kudos to radiohead, and anyone else who follows their example in this.
and everyone who is into their sound, enjoy paying your money directly to the artist instead of some corporate a-hole! - lopla, on 10/11/2007, -5/+102I gave 15pounds and the album rocks! ***** the RIAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- t.toe, on 10/11/2007, -4/+90You should have at least linked to the web site where we can buy it if we haven't already.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -6/+83The album ***** rocks, a really excellent blend of their past and present material. It has some of the cool processed microbeat style that those who have heard Thom Yorke's solo release The Eraser are familiar with, and songs like Bodysnatchers and Reckoner invoke some of their grittier riff rock sound from Pablo Honey and The Bends, not to mention some keys thrown in here and there.
Me though, I can't stop listening to 15 Step! - Enochyang, on 10/12/2007, -4/+71just downloaded it and holy *****, this album rocks.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+57Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the money go directly to the band?
If so, I'm gonna buy it for $20. - deekismusic, on 10/12/2007, -27/+84Please support this cause and purchase the album at http://InRainbows.com
If you don't feel like creating an account, an alternative link for the download is http://tinyurl.com/22umkl - chrisbarr, on 10/13/2007, -2/+57don't give it away man! They worked hard on this and are actually doing something different and unique here!
- benny87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53If every band did this, I'd have paid for every one of my albums.
- Crispin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+47Please get it from Radiohead's site when it's available. We want them to be able to show the industry a new model can work, not prove the RIAA right that users are a bunch of pirates.
- richmessenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44http://www.inrainbows.com/Store/index3.html
There, now you can buy it, or "buy" it, whichever you prefer. - LenzM, on 10/12/2007, -5/+48Too bad there's no art with the download
- nastri83, on 10/15/2007, -8/+51This is the best thing that the unified cop-hating, atheist, way-too-far-left, apple-loving, microsoft-hating-except-for-the-xbox-360, ps3-hating community of digg has posted in a long, long time.
- edjenkins234, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Wow this really is really really good.
Really it is - bffoley, on 10/13/2007, -0/+37Or every Radiohead fan on the planet is trying to download load it at the same time
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35DON'T FORGET. If you like the music, buy the album.
Make them right. - ADVIZR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33Indeed.
Also, for all the people angry at those who don't pay, you miss the brilliance of this. No one inherently owes anyone any money. Radiohead has the good sense and means to realize that those who want to pay will pay. If every single person paid something -- including those who may not like the album -- that would defeat the entire nature of its openness. If you're a fan, it makes sense to pony up and support them. If you're just curious, there's no reason you should pay unless you end up liking the album and it brings value to your life.
The only risk they're dealing with is bandwidth aside from other server/music costs. Let me give an example. Doing it via Amazon S3 would end up probably costing an average of $0.14 per GB or less. The album is 48.4MB. That translates to ~$0.006617 per download of the album. That's a very good risk. With all of the press, something tells me this will be a major success for them, compared to the very small percentage they'd otherwise get through third-party record label, not to mention the increased base of fans and concert sales. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+32I'd only heard a few of Radiohead's songs from hangin out with friends, so it was kind of a leap of faith that I paid $ at all. I'm glad I did, if not for a good album than just on the principle of screwing the RIAA.
- optoomistic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30one by one...
- Bricks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30thought I'd be up til 5a waiting! lets hope the download speeds stay as strong as they are now. and yet another cheers to this ***** outstanding band and the collective media jawdrop they've orchestrated!!
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+27***** YEAH '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
- Enochyang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Same here. Opening track is amazing.
- Bricks, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36Writing this as I listen through 1st time:
15 step = VERY cool and plenty improved from the live version! So THATS where the children's group went! Beat programming for the win!
Bodysnatchers. Holy *****. 10 seconds in I'm wondering if this is the "single." His vocals are WAY out front on this disc though.
This song sounds like a Bends era b-side. Wow. Ondes Martenot up against grit riffs with a hint of eastern melody, but it somehow works!
Nude. Interesting take on it.. This song is a classic amongst fans already, and will be tough to... ok. a fake intro! now we're back to classic nude territory and it sounds stunning!
This disc is going to make new Radiohead fans for sure.
Arpeggi. Damn. Nailed it. Perfect growth from the Ether fest baby version, and evolved from the touring versions too.
All I Need. Straightforward from the live versions, and still beautiful
Faust Arp. Sounds like Paul McCartney joins Tunng. Could be a HTTT era bside, except for the epic strings. Interesting. I enjoy, and time will tell.
Reckoner. Im not feeling pulled apart by horses on first listen. Heavy strings. Another time will tell arrangement for me.
House Of Cards. Radiohead sounds like they're getting older. I think this one had a little more shuffle and fun live. This might be the happiest Ive ever heard them on a song. Not sold yet, but we'll see.
Im noticing that its getting late. I grow tired and more critical. but I trek on
Jigsaw Falling Into Place. Traditional Radiohead guitar melody intro. Sounds like 2 + 2 = 5 part 2 in spots.. Cool pace. Some potentially catchy vocal lines.. need more time with this one.
Videotape. Bring out the big guns for the closer. Hail to the Thief piano tone + Eraser style dry/upfront vocals. A fine way to close the album. I never liked Sail to the Moon sitting so early on the disc. Win.
Overall, I digg it up. I like the first half tremendously, and need more time with the 2nd half. Any doubts I had about the live tunes from last year are gone (all tapes have been erased).
House of Cards seems meh to me, but they didn't ***** up Nude.. and that's been a challenge to them for years now. An outstanding record for anyone still bitching about their "departure" circa Kid A.
Until December / discbox disc 2... - thcobbs, on 10/13/2007, -3/+29Or it could be.... just maybe... that its on the FRONT PAGE OF DIGG.
- optoomistic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28RADIOHEAD=thebestbandever
- luckyllama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22"If the motivation for naming our album had been based solely on the [current] U.S. election, I'd find that to be pretty shallow." Thom Yorke
- aaronm67, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Nothing wrong with what he did. The idea of this distribution method is that everybody can pay what they think the music is worth. He didn't like it, so it's not worth anything to him.
- mahdaeng, on 10/11/2007, -7/+24Dugg down for homophobiaphobia.
- noisician, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18if you already paid, you wouldn't be pirating it if you download it elsewhere, right?
- cakestick, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Fake 465x465 album art I made off of the inrainbows.com splash page:
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m210/cakestick/ ...
I don't care if it's different from the real one, it works for me. - manewitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17A little bummed it was only at 160kbps. Doesn't sound bad, but I may grab the CD version when it comes out for strictly fidelity reasons. I don't really want to spend 80 buck on the vinyl version, either. I'm a huge Radiohead fan and I have a lot of respect for them, but if you are going to make an album available digitally as the main release format, you should at least jack up the bit rate and embed some art to make the CD release more superfluous. I think the White Stripes released their record on little Jack and Meg White-looking thumb drives encoded in Apple Lossless format. I thought that was a great idea. Ideally, digital music distribution should eliminate the 16 bit/44.1khz bottleneck in fidelity, besides further downconverting that to an MP3 file. Playback hardware aside, there is really no reason you couldn't digitally distribute a 24 bit, high sample rate file, that matches the sound of the music coming straight off the console in the studio. Quite frankly, I'm not sure the record-buying public, who listen to music on subways with $10 pairs of iPod earbuds are going to notice anyway. Hmm.
- orlyfactor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Better giving that money to the band rather than some RIAA-croney.
- natedouglas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14*****'s sake. Add it to your cart, view your cart, check out. There are like three options on each page.
- Jektal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15They should've used BitTorrent...
- darkNiGHTS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Except when they release their album in the United States.
- bffoley, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Look on the bright side, you're paying for all those people who are going "YAY RADIOHEAD ***** THE RIAA" and then go and download it off bittorrent or wherever anyway.
- etruscan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I'm listening to the album now, downloaded it for free. I've really enjoyed the first three tracks, so I will definitely go back and throw them some money - and if the rest of the album is anywhere near that good, I will throw them more.
This is how it should be. - yergi, on 10/11/2007, -10/+22dugg down for being a ***** about homophobia.
- icsbase, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Personally i don't like Radioheads music but this is a good opening for alternative record selling methods. Time will tell if its a success or not. If they repeat the method in the future 2-3 times, i'd say that the marketing has worked.
- Toupee, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I gave them five bucks on principle alone. I don't even like Radiohead that much... but this distribution model makes the music sound that much better. *shrugs*
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10And this is why digital distribution will never fully take over physical media, people are too retarded and stubborn to figure simple ***** out.
- SnowBladerX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I agree, I had originally not paid anything for the album just to see what it was all about, but I will for sure now be sending them a few bucks now that I have heard it.
- TechCF, on 10/13/2007, -1/+10I would pay for a torrent file. Torrent is a good way to download, and can be used legally
Maybe next album? - roycifer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9clearly you paid too little for it. you get what you pay for.
- DooM, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I think he got the exclamation points right... not sure where he's supposed to put the enthusiastic apostrophes, though.
- spoonyfork, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I think you arrived at one of the atomic issues around copyright with respect to copies. The RIAA would probably disagree with you. If you pay for cable TV and miss an episode of Battlestar Galatica on Friday but download it on Saturday, are you breaking the law? Is the person making it available breaking the law if they also paid for cable TV?
- MasteRR, on 10/15/2007, -0/+8I figured it out. I used an email address with a plus symbol it in (fully valid) and the URL they gave me did not translate this to hex as needed by their download protection. If anyone used an email address with a plus symbol just change the + to %2B in the download URL and it will work.
- Jektal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Haven't gotten to listen to it, but bought it about a week ago. Even if the songs suck it's worth it to support a major artist who's going off-label and trying something new. Paid about $6 for it, which seems fair to me for a band I'm not a huge fan of, and for a CD I've never heard a song off of.
