- acidkore, on 10/10/2007, -4/+228He can now mathematically prove that fat bottomed girls do indeed make the rockin' world go round.
- 12Zombies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+172He should force his label to reprint all past Queen albums with "PhD" after his name.
- rac1234, on 10/10/2007, -1/+127"May handed in the thesis, called Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud..."
Despite a life in Glam Rock, his thesis title sounds more Prog. - ripple123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+90Something to fall back on if this rock band thing falls through I guess...
- ryanthagreat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+72Other interesting things he's done:
-He built his guitar, "Red Special", with wood from a 19th century fireplace
-He uses six pence coins as guitar picks
-His guitar effects sometimes mimicked other instruments like trombones
-He is considered a pioneer of the delay effect
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_May - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+60Congratulations to Brian May. Not all rock musicians are alcoholic imbeciles. Some have a brain and intelligence.
- EricCiccone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+48I love the occupations it lists:
Guitarist, Singer, Songwriter, Producer, Astrophysicist - po43292, on 10/10/2007, -7/+36Your paper is 17 years late. You fail.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27Imperial College London (officially Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine). In the latest THES (The Times Higher Education Supplement) rankings of universities world-wide, Imperial was placed 9th overall in the world. It was also ranked fourth in the world for engineering and technology and for biomedicine by the THES in 2006. Reputable enough?
- cheekdog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24finally!! a star that actually earned a degree and wasn't handed it in the form of an "honorary" degree. very cool!!
- popltree2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Another fine example is Greg Graffin, front man for Bad Religion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Graffin - m0tbaillie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21Call me when you can spell "credentials" correctly.
- OGTL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19It's also different from a giraffe.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Astronomers don't get pussy like rock stars. He made the right decision. Wait until you need Viagra, THEN go back to the studies.
- reddevil3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Robin Williams is still an alcoholic imbecile though.
- m0tbaillie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17The lead singer of the Offspring, Dexter Holland, was also a molecular biology PhD candidate, and has a Master's in it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dexter_Holland
Matt Damon was a Harvard student, Will Smith turned down a full ride to MIT, Robin Williams went to Julliard (pretty much one of the most, if not THE most prestigious fine arts school in the world). - judolphin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19So, you're saying academia shouldn't give special treatment to people who have made significant real-world accomplishments? Are you serious? Do you know how many honorary doctorates have been given? I think giving a PhD to an ABD student who left school, gained fame, and is now finishing the task is admirable on the part of the University.
Bravo to Mr. May for taking steps towards tying some loose ends in his life. - Tonamel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Despite being true, that reads like a list of "Brian May Facts" (a la Chuck Norris)
"Brian May can play 'Killer Queen' by spitting watermelon seeds at a guitar from twelve feet away." - Roflcopterrr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13He has his very own blog, you know. He posted this on it.
http://brianmay.com/brian/brianssb/brianssb.html - boggart, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13At last they can truthfully say "Science rocks."
- bsolidgold, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Dr. Brian May
- jhendrix86, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I've started a wikipedia article about Rockers/Musicians with some educational cridentials. Look for a submission on DIGG within the next 5 minutes.
and of course the beauty of it all is anybody can add more people to the list. - adcat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Just call him Dr. Fahrenheit.
- sofaKing812, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Continuing with the punk rock groups....
Milo Aukerman, front man for the Descendents (one of the best punk bands to date), has a PhD in biochemistry.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milo_Aukerman - CRASSPUNXTEXHTV, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12So, The lead singer of Bad Religion( Greg Graffin) has had his PhD since 2003, hes been in the band since we was 15 and now he's 42. He is also a professor at ucla.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+9This isn't a competition, you know.
- las3rjock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Maybe because he doesn't actually receive a PhD until after he publicly defends his thesis and his committee signs off on it?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Just so you know Brian May is a very underrated guitarist, better than most if not all of the guys who traditionally make the OMFG TOP 10 GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME list which apparently has the pentatonic scale as its only qualifcation.
- solonGFX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Are you being serious?
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Nepawoods, I'm guessing you haven't worked with that many PhDs, or are still an undergrad enamored with the magical world of academia. Don't get me wrong I've known alot of amazing PhDs whose work really was contribution to their field, but even from really stellar schools I've worked with a great deal whose 'contribution of new knowledge to the field' is some what questionable. Go ahead and look through an dissertation database even from top schools in their field, you'll find some ground breaking stuff, but mostly those contributions are filling out a few missing details in a small niche area. I'm sure that Brian May earned his PhD just like anybody else.
- Xondar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6He hasn't completed his PhD. He's just completed his PhD thesis.
- Rikkochet, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9The day the music died. :(
- aarons44, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Dugg up for using pentatonic scale in a sentence. Angus Young and John Petrucci are very proud.
- bsolidgold, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Why couldn't the headline read: Queen Guitarist completes PhD?
- YoctoYotta, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I prefer the abberviated "rad." Oh, and don't forget gnarly or tubular . . . who wouldn't want to use those awesome words all the time? Hella.
- D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm going to assume we all know there is a difference between finishing your thesis and being a PhD......
- Neiby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Xondar, I don't know why you're being dugg down for being correct. He is not a PhD yet. He has simply turned in his thesis. There are a couple of things that still have to happen for him to receive the degree.
- lolife, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It doesn't hurt to be richer than God when you start your science career either.
- SweetChinMusic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'm just waiting for Roger to get his degree in anatomy ; )
- KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Don't pretty much all rockstars have a masters in human sexuality?
- joeyjoejoe99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Its different than a quarter
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_sixpence_coin - nepawoods, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I didn't question that it was reputable. I'm saying that if it is, the requirements for a PhD would be an original contribution of knowledge to the field, and that the work he started 36 years ago would be stale by now. For "ordinary" PhD students, this often happens in far less time.
- rainergamer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5+1 for mentioning Bad Religion, the best band ever. Ever.
- adrianmonk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Once you get into grad school, the rules are much more flexible. If the people in charge think you're worthy of graduating, they can graduate you. Deadlines are not a hard and fast rule; they are more a matter of risk, as in, if you miss the deadline, someone has to like your work and decide it's worth it to override it for you.
- Nateon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This is funny. My Dad always bragged that Queen met up at the College he went to (Imperial College). He'll get a kick out of this article.
- po43292, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3...travelling at the speed of light.
- coffeebot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2art rock will now be renamed cerebral rock
- rebopper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You should have stated that different.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapping - Aard88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Guessing the stars didn't change that much in 30 years.
- MonkCanatella, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Dugg up for using pentatonic scale in a sentence.
