- boneill428, on 07/14/2009, -2/+31This sucks. Boston has enough sports stations.
- boneill428, on 07/14/2009, -0/+17Satellite radio is bleeding money. WEEI is always going to win in the sports radio war since they have the Red Sox broadcasts.
- mmd1080, on 07/16/2009, -0/+9Very sad. I've lived in New York for 3 years now and there is NO listenable radio here.
BCN was always great when I made it back up to Boston. Thanks for keeping my ears happy throughout high school. - gbrushtwood, on 07/14/2009, -5/+12w/e who actually listens to crappo terrestrial radio these days anyway..
I think it's better that they have 98.5 as sports. Right now there is no competition to WEEI, there might be with the strong FM 98.5 signal... - clichecow, on 07/16/2009, -3/+8I've been listening to WBCN every morning on the way to work, found out about this yesterday. Now I'm gonna need to get satellite radio cause theres nothing good left on in Boston. Even though Toucher and Rich are getting moved I don't really want to listen to them talk about sports, it's better when they're just goofing around.
- ThaDRD, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5iPods, streaming music, and satellite radio killed terrestrial. They deserve it for having 30 minutes worth of commercials an hour, having annoying DJ's, and sticking to a playlist of 10 songs that repeats every hour.
- madduck623, on 07/16/2009, -2/+6AAF has that Hillman guy; reason enough not to listen.
- memper, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4BCN was a staple of university life in Boston in the early nineties. I'll covet the days.
Rock and roll radio, you had a hell of a run. - serif69, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4In New Jersey we lost 106.3—pioneers of alternative rock—and then K-Rock out of NY within the span of a couple months. They both switched to top 40. 106.3 did so with zero notice.
WBCN is legendary. It's a shame to see it go. I hope you Boston rock fans have somewhere else to go. - Wreckage, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5Sadly rock has been dying ever since the hair bands coated it in make up. Things like American Idol, Auto Tune and commercialization are just more nails in the coffin.
Ah well, I suppose nothing lasts for ever......dust in the wind....all we are is..... - AgeofMastery, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4Holy *****...I grew up listening to BCN along with WFNX, WAAF and WCOZ.
That really sucks - clichecow, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Instant feedback earlier today on WBCN:
Dear WBCN, when you are backing up, please return my CDs.
Sincerely,
1994
In all seriousness though, WBCN was awesome and this is a shame. - videographer, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3I remember listening to WBCN all thru my college years...Charles Laquidara was always good for a laugh. And they were tireless advocates for local music, broke lots of bands both from Boston and internationally (U2 is just one example.)
Sad to see them go, but it was probably inevitable. I moved on; so did the 'BCN I loved. - hogie616, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3I'm heartbroken. Although we still have 'FNX, BCN was the always the number one spot on my radio dial.
As a huge Beastie Boys fan growing up, I loved how they would refer to the station as WbeastieN. And *****, my dad listened to Charles Laquidara every morning for like 30 years.
This blows. - pagno, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3"And another one bites the dust-ah!"
RIP: Rock and Roll
1957-1997 - MaxPowers, on 07/16/2009, -2/+5Good. Terrestrial radio is dead! Satellite radio needs more subscribers.
- appleseed1234, on 07/16/2009, -3/+5The morning commute just got a thousand times *****.
I need my pick-me-up, I could give a rats ass about sports at 8am. - sockpuppets, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2His name was Robert Paulson.
- courtjester555, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2No offense, but how old are you? I've never heard of COZ
- brundlefly76, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2In the late 80's I used to drive a truck and make deliveries around Boston.
I listened to Charles Laquidera's Big Mattress every morning. It was hilarious without being at all obnoxious, and the mix of classic rock with modern rock proved how incredibly superior music programming can be.
During the crosstalk into Ken Shelton's midday show, they would play a game called Mishagosh with a caller and the now-infamous Billy West. Even if I was at my destination and had a delivery, sometimes I would sit in my cab and listen to all of Mishagosh - sometimes it seemed like it was 5m, but if it got funny, it could go on for a half hour.
I was so impressed with Charles Laquidera that I decided to quit my job and become a DJ, which I did for about a year and a half.
However, all that experience taught me is that you cannot really work hard and become a great radio personality, comedian, or music programmer - its a very, very, very rare TALENT.
RIP WBCN - chonuts, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Uh... In case you haven't noticed, EVERY commercial "rock" station plays the same modern Top 40 crap. Commercial radio is owned and operated by only a few companies -- CBS/Entercom and ClearChannel are two of the biggest owners (ClearChannel alone owns thousands of radio stations across the country). Whether you're in Boston or Los Angeles, you will hear the same garbage in almost the same order if you're tuning into mainstream commercial radio.
The music selection has almost nothing to do with it (in fact, the playlists are typically handed down from a corporate office. The station's Music Director doesn't even pick the songs, they just enforce the pre-arranged playlists). It's all about advertising dollars and who can capitalize on new sponsors/advertisers. That's why WAAF (owned by Entercom Boston) has been on top, despite the fact that they play the exact same ***** music as WBCN. WAAF is able to pull in major regional sponsors (for example, Ernie Boch Jr. Toyota Dealerships strictly advertise on WAAF) and it has kept them alive. CBS Radio completely dropped the ball with WBCN and the people in charge stopped caring about 10 years ago. That's why WBCN (and many stations across the country) is going away. Sad but true. - pagno, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Wow. Someone created a random-word generator and attached it to a troll bot. Nice work.
- Ajajadude, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Damn, I remember listening to that station when I was growing up out in the 'burbs.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1They play nickelback, the killers, kings of leon, and whatever top 10 one hit wonder is new on WBCN. That is why it is going out of business. It is a ROCK station, it should be playing ROCK with a wide range of heaviness, not flavor of the minute pop songs.
- KidTechno, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2yup!
- joebus, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1YOU'RE MY BOY, BLUE!
- jayskulls, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1I listened to BCN for years.. until I got an iPod.. still it's disappointing to see it go.
- Wizardo55, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Shame I never even listened to 106.3. Even worse to see K-ROCK go after it had only been back for what, a year? We've still got 105.5 though, which is definitely the best rock station left standing that you can get in Jersey.
Right around Philly, though, 93.3 is still awesome, even if they play too many commercials. 94.5 Became a half-retarded classic rock station (Isn't it only the 70's, 80's and 90's now? That belongs on XM) - MAGZine, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1tip: if you buy satellite radio, go in it w/ friends. Split the subscription cost, and just add all of the receivers to one account.
I know it works with Sirius, no idea about XM. I think Sirius is merging with XM, so do it while you can! - maccam94, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Damn, there goes my favorite radio station. I wasn't a big fan of the radio shows, but they played more music that I liked than any of the other stations in the area.
- ScottyAnimal, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2You obviously like Clown Rap/Rock whatever the ***** they are so your argument is invalid.
- PopcornDave, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1The real problem with satellite is that it's all based around NYC and anymore isn't much better than terrestrial radio was or even is. You've got the same ***** DJs blathering about nothing just like on radio.
Sure you don't have commercials on the music channels, assuming you don't count cross promotional channel mentions as commercials but the music rotation is a small step above regular radio where it used to be like the FM of olden days. - twiztidsinz, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2Greg Hill is better than 90% of the people who have worked at WBCN in the past 20 years.
- counterplex, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Fight!
- JacD, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1No good radio in NY? What about 101.9 and Q104.3?
- pagno, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1We had a station do that too. 94.1 FNX, perfect mix of all rock; Beatles and Stones, to Metallica and Soundgarden. Then one day, I turn it on, and without notice, they start playing Brittany Spears. Now, we only have one rock station, in a SEA of country and pop, and you can bet it sucks.
- Hiltonizer, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Move to the north shore... you'll be able to get WHEB from New Hampshire.
- brundlefly76, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1The problem with Satellite radio is that the stations are not local - everything is national. Satellite TV has a similar problem with some independent local TV stations.
Having local announcers, news, sports, weather, traffic and crosstalk adds a lot of desirable color to FM music stations, especially at drive time. - Hiltonizer, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1BCN has sucked for a minimum of 10 years... all its good for is airing Patriots games.., which will be picked up elsewhere.
maybe if they didnt play the same dozen ***** songs for the last 10 years, they'd have some luck.
Adam 12, Toucher and Rich, you all suck. - brundlefly76, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Yeah if you want to hear Golden Earring's 'Radar Love' on the hour.
What is WAAF's obsession with that song? - moothemagiccow, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1old people
- vashth3stampede, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1it was broken off before i bought it and i get just enough reception to not care about it.
- AgeofMastery, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Older than I want to admit lol
COZ became ZOU in the mid 80's and now its JMN - redsox59, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Which ones other than EEI exactly? Sure BCN has the Pats games and whatnot but as far as dedicated sports radio I can only think of one.
- TheUngod, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1AAF started sucking when they lost Opie and Anthony. Granted, it was the best thing that could have happened for them. I still remember Whipem out Wednesday.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1*****. I'm moving up to Boston this fall.
- vashth3stampede, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1just to clarify for all of the other T&R fans - their show is not changing much. you won't hear music on it anymore. if anything we're getting 12ish more minute of them/hour in the morning without them playing 3 or 4 songs per hour.
Maybe i should buy an antennae for my car so i can get 95.5 WBRU or 92.9......FNX is okay and AAF can suck a big one for all i care.
I am, however, excited to have the bruins games broadcast on the radio - vashth3stampede, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1their show wont be changing much. they wont be playing 3/4 songs/hr - if anything youll be getting 12 more minutes/hr of hilariousness with them. it's 12 and hardy that im going to miss =/
- Rethcir, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Your car doesn't have an antenna?
