- Rotzooi, on 07/16/2008, -3/+147Every crappy little "artist" nowadays thinks that if they bring out an album, they are entitled to 3 mansions and 15 cars - automatically. And if they don't sell well enough to achieve that, it's those damn music thieves' fault!

after all, they need something to pass the time in between looting and plundering - webkami, on 07/16/2008, -2/+125Read "one government study" here instead of blog:
http://www.pch.gc.ca/pc-ch/pubs/music_industry/tdm ... - rectifier, on 07/16/2008, -16/+102Actually, having read the article and also the linked government article, this is just pure bollocks, there is no link. Saying "pirates" buy more music is absolute tittycrackers.
- Zelmatic, on 07/16/2008, -3/+89tittycrackers?
- nickycakes, on 07/16/2008, -15/+89i download music and will never buy a cd again. not losing sleep over it either.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -1/+67dugg up for tittycrackers
- ThreeHives, on 07/16/2008, -2/+63A few thoughts from a musician/independent studio owner :
1. I personally download music and if I find myself enjoying the album enough, I'll go out and SUPPORT the artist by picking it up (for whatever ungodly cost the major labels and retailers are charging us).
2. the concept of file sharing is a wonderful tool for an up and coming musician/group. It removes the limits of hoping like hell that the FEW local retailers that hold local/up and coming music will carry your music, and then once they do, hoping like hell that someone picks it up. File sharing opens your music literally the whole world (well, the world that's plugged into the web that is...)
3. Arrrr - kylere, on 07/16/2008, -0/+55I go to concerts for bands I enjoy, I buy their swag and I enrich them not the "industry" The best place to buy music is in used CD shops, all the music without the huge overhead and they are usually local firms being part of the local economy.
- TheInformer, on 07/16/2008, -0/+50We do.... with a Bittorrent condom.
- codyodell, on 07/16/2008, -0/+47Oh so true
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -1/+37@ jimv1983> Spot on.
@ Rotzooi> I have a close relative that is in the music industry, and he's made millions. I once joked around with him (when Napster was the only file sharing community the news knew about) that I pirated his latest album. He said, "Ppfff... I don't care. As long as you pirate it AFTER it's released. I make all my money from touring. All a CD is to me is an advertisement for our concerts."
He went on to explain that when he sells a record, he'll sell them for, say, $5.00 per CD to a distributing company, who in turn sells it to Walmart, Target, Best-Buy, etc. for $9.00 per CD. Those stores then make it up to $15-$20, depending. Then from their profits from those, he pays back what the record label paid for in the recording process.
On tour, however, the band gets up to 75% of ticket sales, and 90% of merchandise sales.
A quick example would be if they had 5000 in attendance, at $20 per ticket, the band would split $75,000 amongst the 6 members.
That's for one small show. They've had upwards of 23,000 in attendance. - dafunkmonster, on 07/16/2008, -0/+35I have bought around 10 albums in the last 2 years. I downloaded songs from those albums before I even bought them. For several albums, I had patched together entire copies of them, and still felt compelled to buy the album in addition.
As a college student, I am not in a position where I have lots of disposable income. When I buy an album, I have to essentially sacrifice a meal or two, gas, or some other necessity to pay for it. If I had not had free access to this music through P2P, I would have bought zero albums in the last 2 years. - indubitably, on 07/16/2008, -3/+36BUY VINYL
- parasitemite, on 07/16/2008, -1/+32This is a pretty pointless article and your comment is dead on. Shiver me timbers...
- yurimxpxman, on 07/16/2008, -2/+33That is officially the worst analogy I've heard since the last season of American Idol.
- layzice, on 07/16/2008, -0/+29I don't think pirates should attempt to explain themselves...
Got a problem?
The plank. - WoollyMittens, on 07/16/2008, -2/+31The RIAA will just use a couple of their own biased studies and -b-r-i-b-e- lobby to discredit this one.
- jimv1983, on 07/16/2008, -5/+31I buy music on CD(like having the real CD with album art and all also I am very ANTI-DRM) For one thing I like supporting the bands that I like and although they do not get a large percent of the profits they do get some and I like seeing bands I like having platinum selling albums. Also if everyone stole music several things would happen. First there would be no one to post it and second bands would stop making music because they have to reason to. I do believe that they do it for the joy of creating an artistic work but dont think for a minute that they would all do it for free. Gotta make a living somehow.
- cassetteNeck, on 07/16/2008, -3/+29I pirate digital, but I buy vinyl.
- blitz718, on 07/16/2008, -11/+36a troll is a troll is a troll
- Rotzooi, on 07/16/2008, -1/+24Then he's not only a good guy, but also a real musician. Unfortunately, that's a minority nowadays.
- alpha88, on 07/16/2008, -0/+22Yep, I download a ton of music, and if I like it, I buy it. If I really like it, I go to see concerts, buy merch, etc.
They need to stop whining about pirates. If I didn't download their music, I wouldn't ever hear them, since I won't buy a CD that I've never heard before. - winterorange, on 07/16/2008, -3/+23What exactly IS a tittycracker? And I want pics buddy!!!
- mrblonde314, on 07/16/2008, -6/+26I really do see your point, but I'm huge music fanatic (and a musician myself) sitting at about 750ish GB without purchasing a single song. This may sound like a pretty construed belief but people have been enjoying music for free longer than they haven't. Way back when music was very young and still in it's most artistic stages, people would make it for the sheer entertainment for their fellow man whether it be spiritual or not. Music has now just turned into a corporate brothel in which case I don't believe anyone should be buying into it (literally)... Contrary to popular belief, musicians don't deserve to be millionaires. What have they done that is so ***** important that they deserve my money. Entertain me 2-3 minutes at a time? Okay, my dog does that on a daily basis. Give that money to people saving lives and teaching our children. I will admit that putting on a live performance is completely different. I will pay my hard earned money to see a good show. Other than that the only music I pay for is the guy in the street who spends his entire day playing his guitar for the benefit of nothing, I'll drop him a few bucks. Music should be made to make the people you love happy. If it becomes popular then great, perform a show and make some money, don't give me this boo-hoo sob story that millions of people love you and your work but you're not rich, you ***** whore.

- jake8689, on 07/16/2008, -1/+19most band make nothing off of music sales, it's all in the live show and the more people who have and enjoy your music the more will come to your live shows
- ATLien74, on 07/16/2008, -0/+18*****. People will support the artists that are worth a *****. I'd say justice is finally served that you can actually listen to an entire album before you buy it to make sure there are more than one or two good songs on it. When I was younger we used to by albums, tapes, CD's based on how cool the cover looked, and 9 times out of 10, the music was *****, or there was one good song on it, and you can't get your money back if you opened it.
- Cybermaul, on 07/16/2008, -1/+18Gordon Freeman's more likely to buy crowbars...
- jimv1983, on 07/16/2008, -5/+22I agree those bands should realize that they just plane suck.
I talking to you pop artists. - cl2yp71c, on 07/16/2008, -3/+19I call shenanigans.
I haven't bought a music CD since....the 8 Mile soundtrack.
And that was in 2002.
Oh cmon...I was twelve. - cl2yp71c, on 07/16/2008, -4/+20Pirates= ARGHHHHY MATEY!
Others= Fail
....but seriously, many music fanatics actually just buy the CDs, even AFTER downloading the entire FLAC album off bittorrent.
so most of us would be in the 'Others' category. - pimpdad82, on 07/16/2008, -1/+16they just "plain" suck. Not plane LOL
- ATLien74, on 07/16/2008, -0/+15Personally, I think a fan is WAY more valuable to an artist than the theoretical 10 or 15 bucks they "might" have payed for a CD.
- TheInformer, on 07/16/2008, -0/+15You're assuming that CD sales would have been the same now as then. It's also entirely possible that there's more crap on the market today and people aren't buying it. I gave up listening to 'music' on the radio years ago.
- coyote1284, on 07/16/2008, -0/+14Same could be said for professional atheletes.
- inspecality, on 07/16/2008, -7/+20Well how else are pirates going to upload albums? On private music trackers ratio is key.
- Yckster, on 07/16/2008, -1/+14I never bought more music than when I had Napster 1.0. I bought hundreds of CD's because I heard them on there. Since Metallica shut them down, I haven't bought even a fraction of that in the last decade. Although I'll pirate a Metallica album.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+13The funny thing is that, I've just recently started downloading entire discographies of music from bittorrent earlier this year, and I've purchased 6 albums within the last 3 months, just because I enjoyed the artists so much. Previous to that, I had never bought an album in my life!
So yeah, it is working. - aladrin, on 07/16/2008, -1/+14Maybe you should have read the article, then. It clearly states that among those who pirate, the more they pirate, the more CDs they tend to buy. Among the general population, piracy is neither positive or negative on the number of CD sales.
In other words, they're saying piracy does not affect the amount of CDs someone buys, but is instead another symptom of the person being a music-lover.
Personally, I find this study hard to believe. I know there are many, many pirates that refuse to buy something they can get for free. I have to think that none of them managed to be included in this study. - shibbyo, on 07/16/2008, -1/+13This would be a relevant analogy if car companies were raising the price of cars because they believe speeders cause people to buy fewer cars. You left this comment on the blog too. Double embarrassment for you.
- solid12345, on 07/16/2008, -1/+13Thieves are more likely to buy crowbars
- Calcularius, on 07/16/2008, -0/+12Did you even read the article huszar02?
You are repeating the ***** assumption that the article is disproving. - trueshadow21, on 07/16/2008, -0/+12http://www.jinx.com/other_swag/other/geek/riaa_toi ...
