- myskja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+118This is what we get when RIAA and MPAA are remote-controlling old and clueless politicians :(
I'm honestly and sincerely worried. - en3r0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+76They are seriously having a detrimental effect on our world, and it's sickening.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -15/+67Cerebral, this has nothing to do with Republicans. Politicizing the issue takes any merit away from what else you have to say.
They're bought hand and foot, on BOTH sides of the aisle. - sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -20/+51@Cerebral: The only solution is to revolt. I am talking full scale citizen unrest. Take back the country by force.
- digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Sure - it's the moral code of capitalism. Kiddie porn doesn't cost anyone any money, duh
- fogbog293, on 02/10/2009, -1/+27Laws like this that turn everyone in to criminals are also fantastic for locking away political enemies. The pieces of a totalitarianist framework are falling more perfectly in place with each passing year. You may have the first ammendment right to go on TV and say that the president is a piece of dirt, but his administration can always look at your internet usage log piped in to NSA databases courtesy of AT&T and find a reason to put you in jail for a long time.
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32So... when Clinton passed the original DMCA when he was in office that was... what? A bold move towards Copyright reform? Come on, bringing partisan politics into this *is not* going to solve the problem. This is the fault of both sides. Head on over to opensecrets.org and take a browse through all the members of congress(republican and democrat) that have accepted large sums of money from the TV/Music/Movie lobbyists.
- thirdtenor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26So true, remember the analog hole legislation a few months back?
IT was Introduced in a bi-partisan fashion, sponsored by Sensenbrenner (sp?) and Conyers, written and (well) paid for by Hollywood.
What to do about it all?
Comprehensive lobby reform and public funded elections. With those we might be able to flush the crap out of Washington by 2012.
Of course that will NOT happen and even if/when it does will it be to late? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26You know what's gonna happen? People still aren't going to listen to it. Has the previous DMCA stopped anyone from cracking *****? Refer to exhibit A: xbox360. Has it stopped anyone from copying movies? Refer to exhibit B: dual layer dvd burners. You can't make a law against what a sizable part of the population does on a regular basis. Why? Because you can't throw them all in prison. They're finding that out in states all over America with drugs... often they have to let the littler fish go because there are so many bigger ones. And they still can't fit them all in.
- barberouge, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32In canada comapnies are forbiden by Law to sponsor (read corrupt) politician, WIth you system private ownership of governement is innevitable... Regime change beging at home, Try democracy for once you will see it'S fun
- ryanmatthew, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28I love this country, but sometimes I just wonder about it. It is just insane that they will make laws like this to keep the rich people happy......but who cares about the exploited children?
- mrops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25The headline got me thinking. (slightly offtopic)
Lets say I make a software that lets these dirty pedofiles use to cover thier tracks. Say u, a good netcitizen exposes these pedofile by hacking my software. I don't care what happens to pedofile, they go to jail, they deserve it, but I on the other hand can sue your ass for cracking my software.
This is sort of analogous to you cracking DVD protection for fair use. Doesn't matter if you are abiding by the law and being good, the fact that u cracked DVD protection gets you jailed.
What a screw world, or more precously US for the moment. Happy to be here in Canada :) - jgstew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23with this new law, it seems your better off stealing the CD/DVDs than copying them. It seems you would get a lower sentance, even if the likelyhood of getting caught is higher.
- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26@sembetu
I am with you man. Kick all the ***** out and install a true democracy controlled by the people not some farce republic controlled by the corporations. - Gimpace, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32"Hear Hear"
not
"Here Here" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21---"I am with you man. Kick all the ***** out and install a true democracy controlled by the people not some farce republic controlled by the corporations."---
What a lot of people that holler for "true democracy" don't realize is that "true democracy" == mob rule...which means that those same people will lose a lot more than they gain.
If "true democracy" were implemented in the US, you can count on a few things happening:
1) Abortion made illegal
2) Special "rights" for gays/disabled/etc. out the window
3) Businesses strapped with so many restrictions that job losses will be enormous and the economy will eventually tank
4) Taxes repealed all over the place -- which means no more money for pet programs such as welfare, medicare/medicaid, gov't-funded scientific research (including NASA and stem cell research), etc.
5) The Electoral College probably goes out the window (which means that the whole country will be ruled by New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and a few other cities...and the rest of the country might as well not even vote).
...and that's just a *few* of the potential outcomes of a "true democracy".
If you want TRUE governmental reform in the US without going to a massive destructive "true democracy":
1) Put massive restrictions/penalties on lobbying (or just outlaw it).
2) Force term limits for Congress.
3) Make it easier for 3rd party candidates (such as Libertarians and Green party candidates) to get on ballots and televised debates.
4) Ban any kind of corporate and non-profit political donations and restrict donations by private citizens. Also, do not allow candidates to fund their own campaigns -- only allow campaigns to be funded by private donations (as delineated above).
5) Put massive restrictions on gov't pork spending (removes part of the ability of politicians to "buy votes").
--and possibly--
6) Go to the Fair Tax system (repeal all income taxes and institute a limited national retail sales tax...possibly graduated on luxury items). (This is not required for governmental change, but it would help.) - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Wtf are you talking about? This is exactly what it was wrote for, the various groups that had input on the bill when it was up to be voted on were all drooling at the mouth because this finally gave them some teeth. We all saw this coming back in the day, hell even the people reporting about it saw this coming! People were screaming foul from the get go, but our politicians had to much money stuffed in their ears to hear it. You people screaming "well the republicans did this..." or "the democrats did that...." need to understand that THEY ARE ALL OUT TO SCREW US. You think they take office anymore because they want to help the people? ***** no, they hear about all the perks and money they can get from interest groups and how it makes them immune to a ***** load of tax and other laws....wake up people!
- joekeegan123, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23This type of justice is really a tragedy...but we bring part of it on ourselves.
HOW MANY OF YOU VOTED IN THE LAST ELECTION?
I was guilty of not voting, because I didn't want to get involved in the RAT RACE of politics...but in the last election, even though I identify with a lot of Republican ideals, I voted DEMOCRAT for (hopefully) obvious reasons (google: FAILURE and see what you get).
Also, take the latest satire available .... American Dreamz, the movie that is currently out in theatres (and BitTorrent :-) )...more people vote for AMERICAN IDOL than vote for the presidency in this movie, so they make the president a guest judge on the show.
As it turns out, I really don't think that's such a bad idea, if it gets people to vote FOR REAL, in real life.
Just an interesting juxtaposition, given the propensity for people to complain about what a TERRIBLE JOB the government is doing. When 60% is a record high number for a turnout of voters since 1968 (check the records, 40% of the population did NOT vote, and that 40% could have made the difference), I think that we SERIOUSLY need to stop complaining and START VOTING!
I know it's difficult to mount a coup, or take the time out of our busy lives to protest, but voting takes maybe 1 hour of your time, and maybe a little light reading beforehand to get familiar with the facts and issues facing both candidates.
VOTE VOTE VOTE...it will help change, hopefully for the better... - sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21@rewritable: Seriously, I was not just mouthing off, and I do not fear the Government. As a matter of fact, I have numerous copies of and have read the Constitution of the United States, and to my recollection, I not only have the right (currently) to Free Speech (and many a lawyer would defend what I said as protected speech), but I also have the right to bear arms and protect myself and my fellow countrymen from an oppressive government by way of a well formed militia. FBI knocking down my door? For that comment? So be it. I would gladly welcome the opportunity to be the one who stands for something so as not to "fall for anything". I sincerely believe in and have courage in my convictions, and my E-penis is still the same length it always was... short shriveled and to the left, but my beliefs: Tall and Proud.
- gschoots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15The US needs a multi party system, such that is known in most other countries. That way there is actually something to choose, we in the Netherland have about 10 parties and that works quite well.
- toner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Yes, Democrats and Republicans are crap. Third party and indie candidates are locked out because of the simple mathematics of our broken election system. Election reform is needed immediately. Let's start with Instant Runoff Voting (IRV).
http://www.fairvote.org/irv/ - oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"If you copy Craig David's CD you get ten years, but if you punch him in the face and pummel him into a seven day coma you will only get six."
I love this line. It really shows just how out of control the U.S. is becoming. When corporations set the priorities in law, we all suffer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yah, it is to bad these dumbass politicians have no clue. Damn lobbying power running this country into the *****. What the jerkoffs submitting and passing these bills need is education on the subject, and not relying on some prick shoving money into their pockets to decide what is best for us all, but that politics. Last TWIT episode did a great job explaining this in more detail, check it out.
- kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Here's a question for you, if you feel like you can answer honestly....
The entire federal government has been under Republican control since 2000.
Would you say that in the last six years America has gotten better or worse?
Are you more free, or less free?
Do corporate interests like the RIAA/MPAA l have more or less influence over your government than they did ten years ago?
Do you see your politicians taking responsibility for their actions, expenses, decisions and budgets, or do they pass the responsibility buck to The Media, A hurricane, Mayor Nagin, A terrorist leader, the 19 men who committed the murderous act of 9/11, Scary Child Pornographers, Music Pirates? If the buck has been passed, who is really in charge? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12People always give in to the "children" issue. I think that's even more disturbing than child porn.
We don't need supplementary laws for what's already illegal. For example, it's already illegal to drink and drive, so why is it illegal to have an open alcohol container in the car? People need to question these things for EVERYTHING.
We don't need people telling us we're criminals for copying ***** data over some hypothetical "this costs me money" *****. While we're at it, we don't need laws telling us what we can/cannot do if it's outside the realm of physically abusing or hurting another person.
Has anyone ever bothered to look at numbers for the income that piracy supposedly stops? It's all hypothetical. It's a ***** joke. They assume everyone who downloaded a CD/Movie/Game was gonna purchase it to begin with, and that's not always the case. I've downloaded MP3s of scratched CDs I own, cds I've never owned (and after downloading the songs, realized I'm glad I didn't), and for CDs I went out and bought after the fact. Same with movies and games.
The problem is that most people cannot think. Most people live in this tunnel vision fantasy land where they honestly don't know the difference between physically stealing and downloading something. They simply blurt out "but you didn't pay for it!" without realizing how little sense it makes. These are the people who should be watched, because these are the ones who approve of these laws simply for not knowing any better (which is most people in congress).
I mean honestly, piracy doesn't bother me. I very rarely pay for movies or games anymore and that's not gonna change no matter what law they create. I'm sure it won't change your habits, either.
DMCA can be used right back at them. The same loophole that ISPs use to avoid responsibility for pirated material (ie, you are their subscriber, you download something over the connection they provide) can be used on your behalf by running exit node software like Tor (http://tor.eff.org) and Freenet (http://freenet.sourceforge.net/), and very soon anonymous p2p.
The fact is, unless you're a corporation, there isn't ***** you can do unless there's a revolution and the government is purged, which won't happen because people are lazy sheep. You can't write to congressmen or anything like that since 90% of the people they represent are oblivious to this situation. The only thing to do is physical or digial fighting. These laws do nothing but encourage attention and development to the aforementioned anonymous services.
So while you think we're getting ***** now, we're the ones developing these anonymous services to ***** them back. - TekJansen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11In all fairness, common sense dictates that 10 years in prison for copying music or videos is insanely unjust. It is disgusting to think that my tax dollars will go to fighting a war against my fellow citizens on behalf of the RIAA and it's ilk.
- Cerebral, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12It probably does but then again is anyone from the KPAA (Kiddie Porn Association of America) going to stand up and declare that people are hurting their business from illegally distributing kiddie porn?
- Gills, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Here's to governments not serving the people.
- AvatarKava, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Because Bush introduces and passes bills on his own.... I hate these knee-jerk response posts, they make valid Bush criticism (and believe me, there's tons!) carry a lot less weight here.
http://www.eff.org/share/petition/ - Sign the EFF petition (and better yet, call your representatives in government) while you're at it if you want to actually make a difference rather than making a senseless response post that doesn't even cast blame on the right people. - RustySpork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10After hearing this. I will never buy a CD again. Ever.
- osiris8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Yep, and abused children have no money for lawyers and lobbyists...
- jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10what happens when the fill rate of white collar crimes is equal to that of crimes of violence?
if assault is a 6 year sentance, and piracy 10 years, and the fill rate is equal, then it would stand to figure that most of the prison population will contain pirates, and not violent offenders.
will it be possible to get more respect through hacking, inside the prison?
someday the headlines might read "GEEKS TAKE OVER PRISON"
now that is funny - kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Altough all politicians are to a degree greedy corrupt and evil, there's bad, and then there's worse.
Since the Republicans took control of the Senate, the House, the Executive Branch, and the Supreme Court, it's gotten worse. A LOT worse. Theyve sold your rights to the highest bidder, and rewarded their largest donors.
You don't have great choices, but never forget that you DO have a choice. - SilentBobSC, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17@Cerebral -
"Round 1: Bush vs. Moron who claimed he invented the internet.
Round 2: Bush vs. Mr. Flip Flop when the timing is right.... or wrong in his case"
Round 1 - if you did your homework, you would see that Al Gore did a significant amount of work to help the Internet develop, it was the media that started the whole "He said he invented the IntarWeb!!!!" crap. We'd be much better off with him right now than the C-average student that thinks the US Treasury is some kind of Credit Card he can pass the balance of onto the next generation
Round 2 - quit with that "Flip-flopper" *****... every politician flip-flops, I recall your buddy George saying years ago how we did not need to be an aggressive country bullying others around and how we needed to make efforts to control our dependence on foreign oil.
The people who voted for this douche need to fess up that their narrow-mindedness has damaged our country far worse than any "screaming liberal" could. - Afrotronics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I remember when one of my friends was traumatized/hurt for life by piracy...oh wait, it was child pornography. I'm always getting those two confused.
- jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10i think i am an idiot sometimes, who else here scored over 1400 on the SATs and thinks that they are an idiot sometimes
do you realize that a score of 640 out of 800 on SATs means that you may not understand the basics of calculus
why is this a problem?
the problem with social security is based on a missed projection in line fitting within a given population curve, if we had more polititions with a math score closer to 800, then, maybe then would we get how to scale processes in this country, and properly fit a line to real data and not anomoly data like the baby boom. instead we elect people that dont know the first thing about math. and then we wonder why we are falling behind in production and in the world economy, and why we will have an aging elderly population that is expecting SS and wont get it.
I would rather have a president that can both understand and explain why SS needs reform, why filesharing is not giong away, and why "downloading mp3's is not communisim"
i think it would be an interesting debate, if some of the USs top CEOs were to run for the job of president, they never would though because it is of no economic interest to them right now - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9As of my signing, the petition has 89974 signatures, they could easily get over 100,000 just with the people on Digg.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well now that my initial wave of nausea has passed...this is abolutely absurd. I don't care what you think about piracy, the idea that ANYBODY (especially an elected official) would consider piracy deserving of more jail time than assault is disgusting and just goes to show how bad the situation really is.
EVERYBODY should pirate as much as they can now. Screw these people. They can't lock everybody up. If you weren't doing it before DO it now. Wave your pirate flags with pride. - fooplex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Easy problem to fix. Don't use their products. Humans have lived just fine for millions of years without movies and without CDs. We don't need these things. Make your own. Go to the beach, go sailing, hiking, canoeing, play games, do anything you want. Television is not a requirement for happiness. Neither are Hollywood movies. The RIAA and MPAA want to kill their own industries. Let them. Their product is crap and getting worse every year anyway.
- JayWright, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Oh my god... Otherland, you need to go jump off a bridge along with the other 52 million ***** IDIOTS in this country that would rather have an "average joe" dumb ***** control this country than someone who actually knows what he/she is doing!!!
Last I heard GW's IQ was less than 90. LESS THAN 90!!!!! And this ***** for brains is running this god damned country!!!
And you say CLINTON disgraced the Oval office!!!??? WTF? I would take a million blow jobs over what Bush has done. BUSH has been entangled in more scandal than Clinton could ever DREAM of! He is probably reading all of these comments right now with the whole NSA spying bull *****. God damn, man. Bush has MURDERED over 100,000 INNOCENT CIVILIANS in Iraq! He has used weapons of mass destruction (White Phosphorous) and innocent people in Fallujah! He has sent 2000 Americans to their death beds fighting for this *****! How many innocent people died under the Clinton administration, you ignorant *****? - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8One way to fight this crap: http://www.ipaction.org
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm still downloading music / movies. Whatever.
Civil Disobedience time. - freescotland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7He who has the gold makes the rules. Same reason we are doing business with China who still sanctions child labor and harvesting of prisoners' organs for profit.
- digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Election reform needs to happen immediately. I'm sad to admit that I voted for Bush - not because I liked him, but I disliked him less than his opposition. What a shoddy way to elect someone. This is not a very smart man in office. I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying that, but we all know deep down in the dark recesses of our intellect that this is true. The man cannot form basic grammatically correct sentences, yet he controls the most powerful country in the world. Yet I chose him because I had very little choice. Kind of a contradiction in terms.
Ok, begin the digg down, I made a statement that no one will like, but most of us know is true. - c.trinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8To the title : How on Earth can ever piracy be worse than child pornography?
There isn't a good enough law to punish the perverts and yet they make some laws who makes the geek as criminal as a molester.
Idiots! - velo2k77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well, I guess there's no money in crimes against humanity. We're hosed tommy...
- OropheR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Prohibition of downloading low quality music and movies reminds me the alcohol prohibition time in the United States of A...
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This scenario is emblematic of our priorities as a culture.
I'll bet more dollars are spent per capita on marketing and litigation by the **AA on music than on preventing/prosecuting child abuse and kiddie porn.
Corporate Fascism is in the house. Welcome to the USAA. - digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@otherland: First of all, I really don't give two ***** how he measures up to Kerry. I just want someone in office who can talk like he has some sense. You call it "honest way of speaking". Well, I call it stupidity. Half of his sentence structure is made up of "uhhh" or just a blank stare.
All his scores and academia you quickly throw up in your post might be impressive if they were the scores of someone whose daddy wasn't a CIA director, former president of the United States, and an extremely successful business man. - dbzer0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Oh gawd. otherhand, you are seriously misguided. Those IP laws were created to protect those multimillion dollar companies profits IN THE FIRST PLACE. They lobbied and got what they wanted. The laws aren't there to protect you, or for the public interest. They are there so that those companies make more money.
Are you OK with that? -
