- Kazanoe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35artists make dip ***** from CD's
if you want to support an artist, go to a concert! - atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34Internet petitions don't work.
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I doubt this will stop them. They're making a lot of money from this and have been proven to be greedy little morons, but I'll digg it anyway.
- m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Wrong. Artists signed to crappy record labels make no money.
That aside, yes, go to a concert, buy the CD there, buy a shirt, magnet, sticker, whatever. More of that money goes directly to the band/artist. - dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16This isn't the first time this petition has made the rounds, but being from the EFF gives it a little more credibility. Unfortunately, being online, they also lose a lot because there's no accountability for accuracy.
Eventually, enough artists might move away from the big labels and the RIAA to make them realize that suing your own customers is a bad business plan. Putting anti-piracy labels on CDs, warnings before theater shows about stealing movies, and suing people who actually pay for their music/movies eventually will hurt the bottom line. After all, most retailers are smart enough to not call their customers shoplifters after the customer has paid for their goods. - pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Out of curiosity, has an online petition ever actually initiated a change? I typically see them as a way to feel like you're fighting for a cause without actually doing anything. Am I wrong?
- chench, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Got my DIGG and my vote.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12couldn't have said it better myself. We need to actually do something about this. That means continuing to pirate their music, and pirate for our friends, so they don't buy from record companies, until some change is made to the current system. No more payola. No more artists getting stiffed. A better buying system (iTunes is a great start into that direction, but I still don't use it, because I feel like artists are not being fairly compensated).
Download your favorite artists. Go to their shows. That's where they get their money. But don't pay the recording industry. They've taken enough from us and them over the years.
It's going to take more than just the geek community to put a thorn in their sides. - hexalite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't think that's the final point of the petition. In the end, 100,000 signatures means we've made 100,000 people aware of the situation. I'm sure many people signing the petition have gotten their friends, perhaps unaware of the situation, to sign the petition as well. It's an awareness campaign and it's working. If the governmental body recognizes this "online" petition, then that's an added bonus.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Eh, it's a good idea, but what difference does an internet petition of a bunch of 13 year olds make in the RIAA's decision making process? This is all for show.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'm from California buddy, we ousted a governor with petitions.
- _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Damn. I'm in Canada and I can't sign the petition :(
- Yankees368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They arent going to get anyone to sign this thing if their site dosent work.
- niiru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8..or not making sales from people who have completely lost all respect for them since they started attacking their customers.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7CornStarch: time to get busy with them petitions again
- screensnot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yep, who can take an online petition too seriously. There is no way to determine if all of the names are real.
A quick look at some of the signatures turned up:
A person claiming to be from Somewhere, AL (#76090)
9 signatures in a row were all from a city called New Delhi, but were in 5 different states (#76123-76131)
K. Frog (Kermit?) signed (#76094)
And these were found at a quick glance. Are these sigs from RIAA people trying to undermine the petition? Are they just from jackasses that think they are funny? - m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Petitions, at least online sponsored, are useless. If you want to collect names and write a formal, written, letter to each member of the RIAA, it *might* do something.
- dolson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Saintlink, once upon a time, the big record labels weren't so obsessed with suing everyone. But their business model has changed to that of SCO...
Back in the day, it was a good thing for bands to get signed to a major label, as they got a lot more marketting and exposure... Some of those bands are still good bands, and have contracts which require them to produce a certain number of albums. So really, they don't have a choice.
I know that doesn't speak for all of them, but for example, the latest Megadeth CD was even released under the Megadeth name because the band owed one final album to the label. Even if Dave Mustaine wanted to release the final Megadeth album independently or on an even smaller label than Sanctuary, he wouldn't have that option. But I still wanted to support him, as I think he has a ton of talent, especially after overcoming his arm injury. So I bought the disc, and went to a concert.
I don't know where Dave Mustaine stands on the issues at hand here, but I was just using his art as an example.
Metallica, on the other hand, I know where they stand... And I felt free to "preview" the St. Anger album, which was garbage like several albums before it. Although, I would say it was probably worth $10 or so because it came with a DVD, which I wish more bands would do. But anyhow.. I'm off on a tangent now. - sbostedor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wouldn't it be more American to just start paying attention to which recording artists aren't under the umbrella of the RIAA and only buy their music? I think that I'm going to start a website that sells only quality music from artists that do not deal with the RIAA. Sound cool?
Dollars talk. Internet petitions don't. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Being from the EFF doesn't give it ANY more credibility. The EFF can fake signatures just like any individual.
If they really wanted to try to make a diferent, they should have REAL petition drives. 20,000 REAL pen and paper signatures would be more effective than 100,000 online ones.
screenshot...come on. Get real. You really think the RIAA is going to waste even 2 seconds to post bogus signatures on an online petition? They know that online petitions are worthless. They are NOT afraid, even a little bit, of this. - retral, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6There's really nothing that can stop them.. Now that they've basically acquired several major P2P networks.
( http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/wpn-60-20060505RIAAGoodbyeBearShareHello30M.html ) - retral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5EFF always breaks under a lot of pressure
- jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Ya becuase that mattered when they aquired Napster... one falls three takes it place.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I seriously doubt this will do anything. Internet petitions are worthless.
The only thing that would work is if all the fans got together and agreed not to buy any music for a certain period of time. That includes music from itunes, etc. - sbostedor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It does nobody any good to misues the term "terrorist". As much as I dislike the RIAA, the last time I checked they wheren't blowing themselves up in shopping malls and killing people.
- sert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3are you saying they are making money directly from the lawsuits themselves, or from scaring people into buying legit?
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2EFF Back online now. Try again.
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, what happened, I thought they had like 89,000 signatures. I signed it a week or so ago. What's going on?
- Lodarage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hate what RIAA is doing, but this doesnt change the fact that is a fscking blogspam.
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah sure, pervert. :-D
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there isn't a person that has seen me with these on that dont like em'

***** The RIAA!. - Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're a complete dipshi*. The point is that they're going to make a hard copy of this (hence your real address is required moron) and present it to congress. The web is merely the medium not the messenger. I am freaking sick of teenagers trolling Digg. Shut the hell up until you learn something.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, after I submitted it, there were 95,000 signatures... Now there are only 75,000. What gives?
- willhaney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nope pbaehr, you're right.
- jacks0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is 'account' on every RIAA digg article posing as a an anti-piracy, RIAA ass licker?
Artists make enough money as it is. That's too bad if '50 cent' can't buy his 3rd private jet because some people don't buy his music. If I bought music, my entire collection (50 GB) would surely cost thousands. Something I don't have. - m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Congratulations, you formed a sentence! You have just graduated the First Grade.
Don't forget the periods at the end of our sentences...or are you still thinking? - m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why can't we kill the RIAA's website? Where's that hacker who took down Blue Frog?
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's nice to know but my point is I don't think people should trade hundreds of songs over the internet to anonymous people and then act like heroes for it. People have always traded songs, but it's not the same thing to download 80% of your music from strangers.
- digitalsin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh..they had 89,000 a week ago. What happened? Did people un-sign it?
- musicgenius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Somewhat old news. I signed this and posted it last week. Everyone should sign this though.
http://pcpowertips.wordpress.com/tag/file-sharing-news/ - Yage2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My Favorite online petition was the petition to stop online petitions, Cause there not going to give a ***** . And it be to easy to boost up the numbers also . At least a written one would have more merit, But then they'd probably immediately assume everyone that signed it is a pirate and sue everyone on the list, Best way to protest STOP buying Cd's stop buying content online and stop going to movies . if maybe a few million people do this it "might" have a impact on them.
- jpatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Something like that happened with the MPAA and a film entitled "This Film Has Not Been Rated..." or something to that extent... it's on digg somewhere.
- adamsitting, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes! Let's steal all sorts of media illegally, and then expect no consequenses. If they do ask for justice, well, just sign a petition!! Perfect.
- cobalt60, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Digg effect - the site is hosed...
- Poco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I mean I know I should think that any law that makes people money is bad, but I just can't bring myself to logically conclude that I have every right to download any song I want for free just because I'm such a great guy."
It isn't just a problem of wanting to download songs for free. It is an issue of having another alternative. The music industry doesn't really give people a viable option for filling their iPods and then complains when they do the obvious thing - download them some other way.
iTunes isn't really the answer too since it would cost TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars to fill your iPod legitimately. The RIAA has to realize that we treat our music devices like we do the radio - put LOTS of stuff on there and just listen. I can't really listen to more than one song at a time, so it doesn't seem right to charge me THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS (sorry for yelling) to do so. They need to change their pricing structure so we can get a lot more music for the same price. I'm not going to spend more on music after getting an iPod than before. The iPod is not a way for the music industry to make more money - it is another way for them to make the same amount they did before - and to do that they need to sell us more songs digitally (no manufacturing costs) for the same price. - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This storry was on the Digg frontpage jus a week or two ago, but I've digging it again because, although I don't have much hope the Congress will actually care about the petition, the more coverage it gets, the better.
- xnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i digged it but didn't sign it, go explain that one....
- microtopian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We just need to have the top gun at RIAA get caught sharing music. THEN the whole thing goes downhill from there. :D
- PantherX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah, site is hosed. I bet they get their 100,000 though... and more.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is only one petition will matter in this case, and each person who so chooses can fill one out on election day this coming November.
