- quacker912, on 10/12/2007, -6/+196Eddie Vedder about Jeremy:
"It came from a small paragraph in a paper which means you kill yourself and you make a big old sacrifice and try to get your revenge. That all you're gonna end up with is a paragraph in a newspaper. Sixty-four degrees and cloudy in a suburban neighborhood. That's the beginning of the video and that's the same thing is that in the end, it does nothing … nothing changes. The world goes on and you're gone. The best revenge is to live on and prove yourself. Be stronger than those people. And then you can come back."
One of the greatest quotes I've personally ever heard. - werther138, on 10/12/2007, -4/+165@quacker912
"That all you're gonna end up with is a paragraph in a newspaper."
He got more than just a paragraph in the paper, I heard somebody wrote a song about him. - APHughes, on 10/12/2007, -9/+62I always thought Black was the best song on the album
- wordsthatendini, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52Ironic that Eddie Vedder is saying that... because what Jeremy did, did change something. There is a song written about his actions and over 10 years later we are talking about it again.
It isn't Sixty-four degrees and cloudy in a suburban neighborhood anymore... the temp and time have changed but the impact is still there. - dennbruce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47Now if they could only get to the bottom of that In the Air Tonight song by Phil Collins
- sixsicsix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45Black is one of the best PJ songs period
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/intheair.asp There ya go.
- itsburnsie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22@ everyone who made "ZOMG what is this 199x?" comments... if you don't like the story, bury it. If you MUST be a smartass and make a comment, at least have the decency to make it original.
I can only read "Did 1994 throw up in here?" so many times before it stops being funny.
BTW, I didn't know the details behind the song, and don't care if that makes me "uncool." Good read. - quacker912, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21It's funny that you would all say "He got something more, he got a song written about him," but this was a way for Vedder to tell everyone how pointless it really is to commit suicide. There of course had to be some example he used.
There are plenty of kids who have committed suicide and DO only get a paragraph in the newspaper. The fact that Jeremy was "the lucky one," (if you will) to have a song about him doesn't prove anything. Personally I think Jeremy is to represent all of the kids who have committed suicide. - The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Holy thorough research. Damn!
- h0ly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Try and learn something from the past. It might be a refreshing experience for you.
- Lafftermath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Do you need a hug?
- tdhurst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Might want to research your claims a bit more...I'm fairly certain the Internet existed before 1991, we just didn't have the same access to it then.
- meltingrobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I personally think it stops being funny after zero times. ;) Yay 90's. I miss them. Grunge and Riot Grrl are awesome!
- charli2na, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I don't watch the show, but thanks to youtube I got to see this pathetic "performance". Is this what the show is like? Why the hell do you people watch it?
- Scrappy1850, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15RTFA
- charli2na, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Really? 15 years later and they can sell out any arena in the world. Just because they disappeared from MTV doesn't mean they don't exist.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13What a great album.
- zioxide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah, I saw that performance. It was ***** terrible.
- uttles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10He says "blackboard"
At home
Drawing pictures
Of mountain tops
With him on top
Lemon yellow sun
Arms raised in a V
The dead lay in pools of maroon below
Daddy didn't give attention
To the fact that mommy didn't care
King Jeremy the wicked
Ruled his world
Jeremy spoke in class today
Jeremy spoke in class today
Clearly I remember
Pickin' on the boy
Seemed a harmless little *****
Oh, but we unleashed a lion
Gnashed his teeth
And bit the recess lady's breast
How could I forget
He hit me with a surprise left
My jaw left hurtin
Oh, dropped wide open
Just like the day
Like the day I heard
Daddy didn't give affection
And the boy was something mommy wouldn't wear
King Jeremy the wicked
Ruled his world
Jeremy spoke in class today
Jeremy spoke in class today
Jeremy spoke in class today
Try to forget this... (try to forget this)
Try to erase this... (try to erase this)
From the blackboard****
Jeremy spoke in class today

- SRidley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Really interesting, but the organization is horrible. The page needs a more attractive layout, and some serious organization of content. I liked reading everything, but it's incredibly convoluted.
- EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Ironic that Eddie Vedder is saying that... because what Jeremy did, did change something. There is a song written about his actions and over 10 years later we are talking about it again."
Of all the teenage suicides, how many others have a song written about them? How many changed something?
And, really, even then, is a song much of a legacy compared to a life lived? Jeremy never got to fall in love, see the sites, catch a wave, travel the world, see the birth of his child... In context, a song strikes me as small consolation.
-Pie - Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9not to mention the awesome "you can't right click to steal my pictures" unless of coure you take the 1 sec to disable javascript. My right click does a lot more then steal your copyrighted material, please don't disable it.
- seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Check the batteries in your sarcasm detector, I think they're running low.
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I had a teacher who always claimed he started teaching the week this happened. As he told it, the principle came to him almost right away to help with calming down students and such. I'm not sure if the second part is true- he like to embellish things- but he stole a dictionary from the school when he moved, as proof of his working there.
- HellifIno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ya know, every time I listened to that song, I thought he went on a shooting spree, MAYBE ending with himself. Reading the wiki, it seems he STARTED with himself, which kinda cancels out all the anger mentioned in the song.
I always thought the song sounded like Jeremy was rising above the neglect/abuse from his family/peers by (finally) going on a killing spree in his school. Not that that's exactly "above", but it is kinda the ultimate solution. A solution you cannot walk away from.
I totally missed the suicide-only thing. : / - feebie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There are some people in the world who have never heard this story.
Shut up and let others read interesting things. - stratdog25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6hellifino spoke in... class today :|
- jdenzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Never knew the whole story, Thanks
Definitely on the list of top music videos and song of all time.
I remember it being so powerful, like it was yesterday. - ro0ke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe I missed something, but I didn't see the real video on that site. Here it is... the one they showed on MTV when they had music videos (I know it's from MTV2, but my point remains)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gskAeWgEExk - uttles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6As a long time Jammer I always love to see Pearl Jam material, but this is really, really old. If this story has tweaked your interest though and you'd like to find out more about Pearl Jam and the various stories behind their songs, I strongly recommend you go to www.theskyiscrape.com and browse around a bit. They have a songbook there that includes every song Pearl Jam has ever recorded or performed live. It's quite impressive.

"All of this caused me to come up with a new invention called Bungee Cords for Babies. Unfortunately it requires the baby to wear a motorcycle helmet and I have had trouble finding manufacturers of full face helmets for babies so I have not sold many."
Did anyone else find this hysterical? - krg123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://duggmirror.com/music/Pearl_Jam_Jeremy_The_Story/
edit: too late paulc posted already. ohwell - Edkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not too appropriate but look at the second photo below the subsection "Students who spoke in the news article above:"
The third name from the top... Jon P. Ennis - bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It puts a smile on my face when I see some of the new teenage 'pwned' digg generation are actually clued in on good music rather than buying into emo pop ***** and those god forsaken armpit of humanity bands I see every night on late night shows nowadays. There is still hope.
Here's my gift to you linux-roolz-pwned-haxors, full on unplugged Alice in Chains concert. Enlighten yourself:

- kavuday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm a PJ fan too. Not nearly the fan you are, judging by your avatar, but I think seeing them play at the Gorge in 05' qualifies as something. Anyway, yeah the material may be old, but the message is just as relevant today (If not more so) than it was in 1991. I knew the general story of Jeremy, but not the specifics so it was a pleasure to scan through and read that guy's site. Release ftw.
- daprice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After all these years, I never realized that the song was based on an event that occurred just a few miles away from me. I drive by Richardson High School all the time. Sadly, I could see how the Jeremy story could occur in Richardson, TX. It's a typical suburb, with typically clueless suburban adults, not unlike Columbine, CO.
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The black album was really Metallica's last album. Or at least it should have been. . .
- JrunkDunc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Pearl Jam is an amazing and deep band. Eddie Vedder is by far one of the most amazing vocalists to hear ever. I hope they are doing a U.S. Tour again this summer because I have seen them the last two summers and each time they get better and better.
Jeremy is by far one of the songs that made a name for Pearl Jam, but whats amazing is how many other songs by Pearl Jam that are Instant Hits.

- autumnmoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did the guy ever post the interview he kept talking about with one of the staff members? I read the whole page but I didn't see it there. I thought the page would give me more insight into Jeremy but in the end I feel like I've just read the newspaper article again with some added photos...
I love the song, but I must admit that my obsession with it probably formed after seeing the music video. It's a powerful video. - zioxide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting story. I think I've heard parts of it before but not with that much detail.
Ten is one of the best rock albums ever recorded. - DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Those that forget their history are doomed to repeat it.
- Lafftermath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My mistake... I forgot that in the Digg community that people can find the secret of life to all of the unanswered mysteries from "I have a recorded interview that will reveal a ton of answers..."
There's still a few unanswered questions in there, bub... -
