- chakl, on 10/12/2007, -11/+45Hail Xenu
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -7/+40Don't be close minded, if he's making good music (and IMO he still is) there's nothing wrong with being a fan. Remember that he doesn't act like Tom Cruise and is barely vocal about his role in Scientology.
- speedfoot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38i almost don't remember the days when snl was funny, so long ago. at least the musical performance are still good!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+36I think this story needs more cowbell!
- JacobsMirror, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Assuming they're not lip-synced...
- ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I was waiting for this to make it to DIGG. Dugg since it was the one time that my wife put down her book to watch an SNL performance.
It convinced me to go out and buy the album. - edto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Its nice to see people doing something original when performing on tv again, with that said, I wanted to see more of the puppets!
- FreakTrap, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25"By giving money to him, you're giving money to the "church" to support all their anti-free speech legal initiatives."
And buying pot supports terrorism... - Jolene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17While that was really cool. I still like Beck better on Futurama, and Bender's 3 hour washboard solo...
- whiskeyclone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Yeah, this was a staple of the Guero tour. The band would sit down whilst Beck did a few acoustic numbers (he has a huge body of acoustic work - spanning his entire career...not just Sea Change) - they'd eat and drink, usually have bit of banter or veggie fights. Then Beck would play Golden Age (the synth string sounds played by wetting the rim of crystal glasses) before breaking into Clap Hands, which was usually the show opener too - albeit in a full instrumental arrangement.
Beck's currently touring with a team of puppeteers (from Team America) who mimic everything going on on stage and project it onto a screen behind the performers. Also, during the encore they throw on some bear costumes and start stage diving. Totally mental, and great fun. Seen him live 5 times now, and every time it's a new event.
Yeah he's a scientologist, but his music isn't reflective of that at all (contrary to popular belief 'Movie Theme' is about going on tour and 'Exoskeleton' is about the perfect album).
I'm not going to blog spam the comments, so if anyone wants to see pics and videos, you can find my blog in my profile - just search for Beck. And, should you fancy it, my YouTube Channel has some great Beck performances. You can find the links on the contact page on the site. - ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Not this one! The RHYMING Becktionary...
- techweenie1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Exactly he's not in your face about his religion...if more people were like this about religion and politics, I have a feeling there wouldn't be nearly as much animosity that exists today.
- mcorcoran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11He does this in his live show too. Very cool
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I saw beck in concert and they did this bit. He was playing a mellow solo, and they were all eating during it... then this song started and they did this. Beck concert's worth going to.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14what are you talking about?
- diggumjonez, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17@SnapETom:
By giving money to him, you're giving money to the "church" to support all their anti-free speech legal initiatives.
No, by buying his music or going to his concerts, you're supporting him as an artist. What he does with that money is entirely up to him, even if it involves throwing it away on the "church" of scientology. - markperia, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21I don't care if he's a scientologist. As long as he makes good music.
- techweenie1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Great act...wish more American bands were as creative.
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12While Beck is a Scientologist, he is also a practicing Jew. Scientology is not a mutually exclusive religion, apparently.
- blahbbs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Bottles... Cans... I just clapped my hands. That performance was where it's at!
;-) - sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Anything can be used as a percussive instrument...hell, "actual" percussion instruments used to be just animal skin, stretched over a clay pot. Man, closed minds will doom us all, and in some areas of music, already have.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This was performed in a similar manner during his amazing performance in the Lower East Side back on Oct 22:
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2006/10/beck_angel_oren.html - caffiend, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Beck is truly an original artist. Fantastic!
- dalewj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As a percussionist (sp?) for over 34 (oh god im getting old) years now I truely consider that great percussion. Percussion is the art of making music via the the violence of hitting something. That sir, was art
- pflarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I saw him do this in concert in Abq. The act started with with the rest of the "band" sitting around the table while Beck does a solo, unplugged version of "Lost Cause" from "Sea Change". As the unplugged segment continues, the people at the table slowly start adding percussion to the songs, ending with "Clap Hands".
If they had mixed the rest of the concert well (they blasted the bass until you couldn't hear anything else), the whole thing would have been awesome. The show was enjoyable, but whoever was running things in the sound department made it hard to enjoy the music. - Brandons, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Awesome! Beck is great. Nice to see someone doing something original. Hell yes to the harmonica solo (my beat is correct).
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4The funny thing is that's almost his actual name.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beck_Hansen - reqage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I saw this live at Bonnaroo. The marionette dolls were pretty trippy... They also spliced a comedy bit together using the dolls making fun of hippies when the band took a break.
- praet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Love how they ''play" that turkey at 1:35
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10I prefer two turntables and a microphone myself
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like Stereopathic Soul Manure, but that's a bad place to start for a non-fan. The Information and Guero are both pretty accessible and decent summaries of what Beck sounds like. My personal favorites are Sea Change and Midnite Vultures.
- inthe80s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://somevelvetblog.blogspot.com/2006/10/in-case-you-missed-beck-on-snl.html
just found it, with a higher quality clip too - kilgarenone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the video has been removed ! :(
the censorship in youtube is getting worse ! - stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think Beck's made very few albums that weren't great. I never like Loser, but I loved Mellow Gold when a friend gave me his copy. I was excited by Odelay from the start because of the Dust Brothers production. They were the producers for the Beastie Boys album Paul's Boutique which is still one of my favorite albums, and their production work worked very well on that album.
Mutations started of slow, but is something I've come back to consistently over time. I immediately loved Midnite Vultures, liked Sea Change which grew into love over the course of a year, and think Guero was criminally underrated.
Beck's definitely not for everyone, but he's one of the artists I find myself listening to the most. I saw his performance here in Austin where he did the same thing he did on SNL, and I loved it (as you can guess, I'm biased). One of the better live performances I've seen lately, and I see quite a few.
I'd always thought it was Stereopathic as well, don't know how I've mistaken that for so long. - Sertis, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13"***** L Ron Hubbard and

Bob? Gun.
*bang* - caselogic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I saw this live in Los Angeles last year on his tour.... It was amazing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What are your crimes, Yage2006? What are your crimes?
Actually I agree, scientology sucks.
What are my crimes, me? What are my crimes? Head asplode! - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"While Beck is a Scientologist, he is also a practicing Jew. Scientology is not a mutually exclusive religion, apparently."
The Scientologists have a right to believe whatever they want to believe. But let's all at least know what that is.
Ellron (Source) said that the Jewish "I Am" was a hallucination planted by Xenu in the Alien souls after they were killed in the volcanoes and trapped in the sky, later to attach themselves to us. Jesus Christ and ALL other spiritual figures are also "hallucinations."
Scientology IS a mutually exclusive religion. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What are your crimes, xenoploid? What are your crimes?
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I want to tell you all how funny this is, but I can't think of the words... hand me the bectionary.
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While I disagree with your dislike of the performance, I understand where you are coming from.
Actually, the thing I want to hear more about is what The Flaming Lips had to say about him. I know they were his backing band for the Sea Change tour, and I'd read something that indicated he repeatedly tried to push Scientology onto them. I haven't seen anything directly from Wayne Coyne or anyone else talking about this. Have you found a link or anything that you could send to provide more insight into this? - cthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7He was basically born into scientology. I don't think he's gung ho about it or anything.
- xenoploid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Scientology is nuts, and anyone who practices it. So, yeah, Beck writes some good music, but he's just plain nuts.
- Brandons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I actually read that Wayne's comments were taken out of context by the journalist that interviewed him. Beck said in an interview that Wayne is the type of guy that will call out anyone in the room and that's just the way he is. He went on to say that they've talked since and Waynce called it *****.
- firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I too, saw this at bonnaroo! And then beck covered a little bit of creep, and then that amazing 28 song set from radiohead! I have the recording of that radiohead show if you haven't gotten it online yet. I was in the front row too, thom yorke threw a glowstick at my friend joey!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol, it's funny how some people don't get or dislike beck, but the fans are walking encyclopedias.
- h0ward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since it hasn't been explicitly stated yet.. the song is called "Clap Hands" from Guerolito, which is a remix album of Guero
