- loki440, on 10/12/2007, -6/+48Come the ***** on. . .one of the greatest guitar instrumentals EVER! The guy has some amazing skills, but the music just wasn't that interesting.
My fellow diggers, can we scale back the hyperbole in story titles? - UsernameTaken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Agreed. If you think this is one of the greatest guitar pieces EVER, it only shows you don't know much about the instrument and/or music in general. It's good, but rather ordinary.
- cbear9494, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Amazing what some open tuning, hair and a few chords can get you...
It's a nice song but far from the "greatest." Ever heard of Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, Stanley Jordan? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Being Aussie, I am proud to have John Butler as a fellow Aussie.
- NoOnEx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiYwOfaPf5I
owned - EricCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I don't see why there is such overwhelming praise of this performance. Sure it sounded nice, but that doesn't make it "one of the greatest guitar instrumentals ever." Just another guitarist using a capo and an open tuning to make easy repetitive songs.
- nonchai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Give me a break, this was average - and boring - couldnt he at least change key or chord ?
The guy mentioning Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke is more on the ball. those guys are the pros - this dreadlock guy is an amateur by comparison.
But for the REAL THING - just look to any acoustic solos played by Pat Metheny Pierre Bensusan or Ralph Towner. Period. The guy in this video is not only totally boring by comparison, but also nowhere near the virtuoso of Metheny, Towner or a whol bunch of others. There seems to be a glut of these acoustic "lets fiddle around on one chord with a capo, slap the guitar body and fiingertap/ special tuning" brigade. Its all flash and no substance. - mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9comparing Acoustic and Electric is like comparing Apples with Oranges. Gain respect for other genres, wankers.
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I wanna digg this 10000 times, i have been looking through all the Youtube video - good god, this man is amazing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B-x5bhLRkY
That blew my mind - its all good, but if you are impatient - scroll til 7:40

This is a godlike compilation of solos from the drums, bass and guitar - broly1718, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Most amazing ever? Not close. Granted he's very good, but not the most amazing.
- WanderLink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He's both American and Aussie.
And this is NOT one of the greatest guitar solos. - diggSJaustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Another guitar great is Phil Keaggy. Here's a good starting place: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3iSiij98VY
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4His skills are impressive but someone else needs to write the score.
- Tourniquet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, thanks for that second link.
- scottstirling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4BFD -- I mean, nice techniques and pleasant tune, but I didn't see or hear anything that, for me, tops the intensity and technique of, say, Joe Satriani's "Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing" or even "Satch Boogie" or Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption" and "Spanish Fly" (solos that last less than two minutes) or, perhaps a little more esoteric, some of Loe Kottke's instrumental acoustic stuff. Nice find, but not quite of the greatest ever IMHO.
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL
- 350Zed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDUYIkq975Y
Eddie Van Halen FTW! - Dundasbro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Seconded.
- blahed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Esteban bitches........ his guitar has great tone *chime* and checkout the roset.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This is pretty sweet. Drop D on a 12 string with capo 4. Very creative. He's no doubt a great guitarist but nowhere near as technical as some of the artists mentioned above, which is ok because it's a different genre.
- nonchai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@africanherbsman
although we are almost in total agreement, i dont agree about the capos. Many brilliant guitarists use capos ( but some dont ) largely to give a certain kind of tonality. its what they do musicallly that matters in the end.
Why oh why does so much modern music have to be the harmonic equivalent of the "Bacardi Breezer" ( hint - i think is something to do with the "lowest common denominator" - otherwise known as "dumbing down". - beavioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's a pickup for an acoustic guitar. It's useful for post-processing (i.e. using delay, reverb, modulation effects...) and of course amplifying the sound so a bigger audience can hear it.
- jtfunkalot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It disappoints me to know that a bunch of you guys took me 100% at my word when I said that it was one of the greatest instrumentals of all time. Granted, I think it's effing amazing, but I know there are bound to be solos out there that will top this one. I think tw0k1ngs had it right when he said that so much music flies over people's heads because they are so fascinated by how well they can shred. I just want to let you know that a lot of the "shredding" videos that people have posted in their comments were electric guitars. Anyone who plays guitar knows that it's easier to do solos on electrics, hammer on's are so much harder on an acoustic. Forget the "best instrumental ever" part because it was a marketing ploy to try to get people to look at the video. Pay attention to the music and don't try to put it down to make you feel like you know more about the subject than the first person. Just listen to the tune and enjoy.
- theskunkworks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know what that black thing is that he has across the opening in the body of the guitar and what its purpose is?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tweaker?
- subsonik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1R.I.P. Michael Hedges.
I wrote a long-assed response only to have Digg somehow shred it. Feh. - Time4SumWupAzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1420779785512582407&hl=en
I like this one too. - beavioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I figured I'd also add someone whom I think is better.
Al DiMeola can play a mean guitar...
an acoustic song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiLeCQcL-T8 (the audio is out of sync in this one)
an electric song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClbE6YEO6e0 - Laqueefa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow, what a talented guy. I hope to hear more about him in the future.
- Rkstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's cool. I always knew of John Butler more of a singer-songwriter... not necessarily a guitarist. Good to see that he's got that down too.
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've really enjoyed Kaki Kings work. Sure she isn't the first to do that but she still does it fairly well.
- Homerr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, that guy's right hand has some long fingernails.
- beggersfunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He is just good not the greatest. I give it to Micheal Hedges one of the greatest of all time .He innovates this open tuning 2 handed tapping way way long time ago.
- Dr.Gonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For Mindsnare
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTvofktHyGQ - underthelinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank goodness someone somewhere mentioned Michael Hedges. He undoubtedly pioneered rythmic instrumental guitar solos. Butler is good but Hedges >> Butler, especially as far as innovation goes.
Check this out if you don't believe:

http://digg.com/videos/music/A_baglama_masterpiece_kaytagi_from_a_master_Cetin_Akdeniz - tdawson2012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya it sucks how some people have natural talent and can make more money in a month than you will in a life time....but hey YOU went to school so at least you have that.
- lordshank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Scottsterling
Props on Leo, more of a direct comparison, and probably an influence. Kaki King is also one I might call of the same style, and a contemporary of Butler's.

One minor note, it appears the guitar is in an open tuning, which is a little lame, It's musical, but not too technical. The 12-string is doing most of the work while he uses a variety of two-fingered chords and a little vibrato. Throw on some chorus and a tad of reverb and delay, voila, instant wall of sound. He does have the devotion, however, to walk the streets with a full set of "coke" nails. - pjb5064, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very good song indeed, but hardly the greatest. I believe there is a better sounding version on youtube somwhere, but the audio is out of synch with the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VAkOhXIsI0 - COinOR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anybody heard of justin king or trace bundy? they might've been on digg before, i'm not sure.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOdcqUTju5k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh_24DXNy8E (he plays this same song on a double-neck guitar in another video as well)
trace uses capos, albeit in a slightly different way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QckSTgvONc - supranatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He's from a different genre, but John Petrucci is also one of the greats in guitar history.
Check out him and his band Dream Theater. Still, this guy was pretty good. - 3zero3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1John Butler isn't bad, but as far as the tapping technique and melodic guitar instrumentals, there are quite a few that I think are much better than he, namely Erik Mongrain. If you think John Butler is good, peep these:
Airtap

Timeless

Of if it's tapping and speed you like, here's a Randy Collins, right down my street, just goofing around in his apartment:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMB6Jk46N5A - Bamboolemur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone keeps giving props to Leo Kottke, but no one posts a video!!
Here are a few:
Vaseline Machine Gun (This is quiet the hypnotic song. Give it a chance!)

2 guys doing Kottke's Busted Cycle (couldn't a good quality one of leo doing it himself)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z70aHLAqT1I - Dr.Gonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1owned again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUxa_gHAGpU - tw0k1ngs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Your jaw should drop at the intent Butler is attempting to portray through this song and not his technicality... technicality only serves to more accurately and conveniently portray the artist's message.
It's sad how much "music" flies over people's heads because they are so fascinated with how well they shred... and even worse, who can shred "better." - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lol, shredding on a light yellow strat
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2great solo, ruined by some truely horrible video editing
- YoctoYotta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Trust me, the guy in this video has a lot to learn about playing the guitar still.
- Dr.Gonzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1digg down. wrong reply.
