- skippy17, on 11/12/2007, -1/+40Blame violence on video games, blame drugs on music, blame sex on movies, blame obesity on fast food.
Yep, seems like america's parents have got it covered. - Jimmerz, on 11/12/2007, -1/+39If I listened to country music I'd need to get ***** up...
- monkeyrun, on 11/12/2007, -0/+36And 100% thank Jesus Christ when they receive an award.
- ElusiveByte, on 11/12/2007, -1/+26A song mentions alcohol and that's automatically substance "abuse"?
- minnymoo, on 11/11/2007, -1/+26what else do you expect them to sing about?
car bills? pet hamsters? - jdm0778, on 11/13/2007, -0/+23What about the other third?
- thedarkrabbit, on 11/12/2007, -7/+30The remaining third is all songs about sex!!! This is why I like music!
- KLowD9x, on 11/12/2007, -3/+23I like how the chose to write an article in country music instead of rap.
Rap is probably the most vile thing anyone could put into their ears. I found some CDs in a customers car today and listened. Nothing but killing, drug dealing, and buying spinners.
What happened to the times when black people made REAL music?
Like Jimi Hendrix and George Clinton?
Sure, they talked about drugs, but they weren't at all about murder! Not to mention, their music was GOOD. - xxTazxx, on 11/11/2007, -10/+24I love taking speed,
mixing a concoction, meth
till death do approach.
Digg me down all you want, but I'll be happy knowing that I wasted 3 seconds of your life. - betobeto, on 11/12/2007, -1/+14"Nothing but killing, drug dealing, and buying spinners"
You forgot to add 40's, ho's and bitches to the list. - Hetman, on 11/12/2007, -1/+14I dislike the idea that any mention of marijuna constitutes a mention of "Substance abuse." I feel that it implies that we can't have a smoke in a responsible manner.
- woxidu, on 11/11/2007, -0/+13Welcome to being human! Basically every society that's been around for a worthwhile amount of time has enjoyed some kind of psychoactive substances be they nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, pot, opium, shrooms, whatever. I don't get what's so surprising about the fact that we're still doing what we have been doing for thousands of years.
- Frostbeard, on 11/11/2007, -1/+13Because any mention of a substance that CAN be abused is immediately a reference to substance abuse. Right. Of course.
- Humptydank, on 11/11/2007, -1/+11One third is about substance abuse, one third is about sex, one third is about pot, and one third is about weed!!! This is why I like music!
- Richiedude, on 11/10/2007, -1/+10or maybe one third about substance abuse - one third about women or sex - and one third about cars
- scoot2006, on 11/11/2007, -0/+8Kids will get exposed to drugs one way or another. It's still the parent's fault if their child gets ***** up every day not a song's. The kid should know better.
If we treat music as the cause for kids doing drugs then we all have to agree with Jack Thompson about how video games cause violence and I don't agree (or want to agree) with that guy about anything. He's quite the douche. - Sautechef, on 11/11/2007, -1/+9Smokin' endo, sippin' on gin and juice. Laid back...
- AnthonyA7, on 11/10/2007, -1/+8Fail.
- KLowD9x, on 11/11/2007, -0/+7When you say "See what I did there?", it just ruins it.
- Lane, on 11/10/2007, -0/+7I think Afro-man's "because i got high" is one of the only song's I'm aware of that actually depicts drugs to have consequences.
- Humptydank, on 11/10/2007, -1/+8I found that comment improper.
- drgmdp, on 11/11/2007, -0/+5^ failure
- kberry67, on 11/10/2007, -0/+5euro-pop sucks
- vornan19, on 11/11/2007, -1/+54/3 of people have trouble with fractions.
- ipaiba, on 11/12/2007, -2/+7I dislike the idea that any mention of alcohol constitutes a mention of "substance abuse." I feel that it implies that we can't have a drink in a responsible manner.
- KLowD9x, on 11/11/2007, -0/+4I don't know what kind of metal you listen to...
- rush378, on 11/11/2007, -0/+3I suggest you go back to the late 80s and early 90s if you want rap that's any good.
- xcheats, on 11/11/2007, -0/+3Agreed. A lot of country songs talk about a little beer drinking on friday nights but not much more abusive than that.
- Puppetx, on 11/11/2007, -0/+3Agreed, I'm going to bury for sensationalism.
- Ghoztt, on 11/12/2007, -2/+5Smoke two joints in the morn'n - I smoke two joints at night - I smoke two joints in the afternoon
It makes me feel alright! - Godlesswanderer, on 11/13/2007, -3/+6Rock & roll.
- Teanuh, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know if songs influence kids more than their parents and peer do, however, for some reason it makes me feel uneasy to hear my prepubescent, high-pitched brother singing; "Smack that all on the floor, smack that give me some more, smack that 'till you get sore"
It's just weird. - Humptydank, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3Is that where you're drawing the absurdity line? Not that they feel they have to say drugs AND alcohol? Or that pot is probably considered a drug, and any mention of that was included as 'abuse' too?
Plenty of absurdity lines to go around on this one... - vostek, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2how about this for a song:
DONT DO HEROIN OR YOU'LL ***** DIE, AND IT ***** UP THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE CLOSEST TO YOU.
err, uh, just a song, ya know...heard it on the radio once. - inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2those whacky artists!
- urik88, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2You talk like the only one that blames violence on TV and video games, drugs in music and all that stuff is USA.
News to you. The whole occidental world does that. - Foamator, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2Why waste diggers' time?
It only infuriates
computer users - Observant1, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2designed deceptions where the corporations created the situations in the first place.
- theetoecutter, on 11/10/2007, -1/+3"All the best songs are about drugs or the devi"
-Bart Simpson - EricSchC1, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2I think, based somewhat on the comments above, no one got that the main point of the article was the comparison between country music's perceived wholesome image and rock music's less wholesome reputation, not the sheer volume of songs in popular music about substance abuse. The title of the article kinda implies that popular music only (or primarily) consists of country music.
- KLowD9x, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2Neodorian, I'm not sure what it is you're trying to say here?
- KLowD9x, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2I do like Digital Underground, but wouldn't that be more "hip-hop"?
- postpawl, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2This is a very good idea for a survey, I'm impressed.
- neodorian, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, trailer dwelling, wife beating, booze drinking, meth snorting, and bible thumping are pretty common out there but they don't make it into the pop country too often.
- vornan19, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1No, that would be sex OR drugs and Rock and Roll.
Strangley, Rock-N-Roll is a euphemism for sex.
E.g.: Was I busy last night? Man, me and my girl was rockin' AND rollin'! - two2sANDthree3s, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Whoops I OD'd by NoFX
- techweenie1, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Actually alot of British Indie Rock is good...
- CMBlue, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1with my mind on my money and my money on my mind
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1You mean sings like "Lets Get Drunk and Be Somebody" or "You Ain't Much Fun Since I Quit Drinkin" by Toby Keith? Or maybe "Alcohol" by Brad Paisley?
Oh wait... -
