Oink.cd Shut Down
thisisthenortheast.co.uk — It looks like the dream is finally over for lovers of music the world over. This local news story, although inaccurate in it's description of the site and it's URL, seems to mark the end of a great era. :'(

- Spuy767, on 10/24/2007, -6/+6Strange, I don't ever recall "paying" for the right to download music. At least not from oink. I paid for plenty of ***** from iTunes. In fact, I'm pretty sure I didn't download a single Song from oink, most of what I downloaded was Bootleg Standup.

to the UK bbc article - stonedslacker, on 10/25/2007, -2/+38How will the RIAA compensate users who maintained a good ratio?? Are they gonna give us itunes credit or something atleast?

- andrewcubbie, on 11/09/2007, -3/+136This has to be a ***** joke.
I need my OiNK.- Tenlow, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3It was working for me under 4 hours ago. This blows.
- djh816, on 11/04/2007, -0/+14DAMMIT i was .05 away from getting invites :'(
- Tenlow, on 11/04/2007, -1/+9I never even had a chance to send out an invite :'(
- Spuy767, on 11/04/2007, -2/+16There goes my 52:1 Seed:Leech ratio. ::Sniff::
- wafflez, on 11/04/2007, -2/+6I maintained a 4.9 almost the entire time D: I've given out about 20 invites and still have 6 left.
- overt, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2man...this is not cool.
:'( - ayeroxor, on 11/04/2007, -8/+17wah. now i'll have to stick with btjunkie, isohunt, tpb, suprnova, emule, domonoid, torrentspy, mininova, etc, etc, etc....
- random19, on 11/04/2007, -3/+29and they still won't make up for Oink...
this is terrible news - BrianCMasi, on 11/04/2007, -1/+6none of them are are good as oink. the rules on the site made it easily the best tracker on the web.
- SPECOPS, on 11/04/2007, -3/+2There are plenty of other private trackers just as good, the only thing that made Oink stand out was their focus on music. Look and you shall find.
- Nerfdude, on 11/04/2007, -0/+6emule? really?
domonoid?
torrentspy is great if you like porn and fake torrents.
- random19, on 11/04/2007, -3/+29and they still won't make up for Oink...
- noots, on 10/23/2007, -5/+11but... but private trackers are so much more elite than public ones!!!1
- Bootes, on 11/04/2007, -21/+2Oink wasn't really private.
- stonedslacker, on 11/04/2007, -2/+19Yes it was.
- Tweekster, on 11/04/2007, -4/+0that wasnt exactly very private. any idiot could get an account (and did)
- Bootes, on 11/04/2007, -21/+2Oink wasn't really private.
- stonedslacker, on 11/04/2007, -1/+9Oh my God!!! They killed Oink. Those Bastards.
- Sarevok9, on 11/04/2007, -0/+14Man I was just starting to love Oink.... i mean, 700kb/s+ xfers on music that NOWHERE else had.
I mean in the USA how the hell am i going to find Asian Kung Fu Generation, Ayumi Hamasaki, Move- Supertune, Crystal castles 'alice practice'... etc. This is a huge loss to me, and my 12:1 ratio, i just got invites a week ago too >- Ceelos, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2WERD!
- slappe, on 11/04/2007, -3/+58Now where do we all go?
- kevyn, on 11/04/2007, -43/+6demonoid? torrenyspy? mininova?
this is the 1st i have heard of oink... so fill me in if oink is different to the ones mentioned above- atloose, on 11/04/2007, -7/+44OiNK is different than the ones mentioned above specifically because you have never heard of it.
- blue72, on 11/04/2007, -0/+29That, and OiNK was a COMMUNITY
- orlyfactor, on 11/04/2007, -4/+43Yeah, only the cool kids knew about OiNK! You must be lame!
- Pixelante, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5But now the hated Music Industry knows the cool kids and their whereabouts.
- ayeroxor, on 11/04/2007, -0/+19Yes, yes, and all your favorite bands become posers when they get radio play. GTFO.
- Spuy767, on 11/04/2007, -3/+14Yes, the only thing I didn't like about Oink was the freaking Avatar Rule. Mine was never cute enough for this one bitch mod named Brandy who kept deleting it.

- fkr3, on 11/04/2007, -62/+6www.itunes.com
www.amazon.com- Julz, on 11/04/2007, -3/+14pifft... lol who pays for music these days?
- stonedslacker, on 11/04/2007, -2/+10Too soon.
- HayString, on 11/04/2007, -7/+1Good one!
- merdiesel, on 10/25/2007, -1/+2Suck a dick.
- VermiciousKnid, on 11/04/2007, -1/+38Oink is far better than any of those. it is invite only and has very strict rules to make sure they have the best quality music and to keep plenty of seeds. It isn't just music, it's does everything but games and videos. awesome for apps. the community is the main reason its so good though, very helpful forums. if someone is looking for something they can't find, they make a request and someone will find it.
albums often there before they're officially released.- michaelGregoire, on 11/04/2007, -17/+6Yeah, so strict that they don't take criticism and will ban anyone who criticizes their admin practices. It couldn't have happened to a better site.
- sexybobo, on 11/04/2007, -7/+4then 5 minutes after they are release there they are out on demonoid piratebay and any number of other torrent sites.
- michaelGregoire, on 11/04/2007, -17/+6Yeah, so strict that they don't take criticism and will ban anyone who criticizes their admin practices. It couldn't have happened to a better site.
- stonedslacker, on 11/04/2007, -2/+12There is no genuine replacement. A lot of the music and packs that were uploaded there were actually ripped by Oink members before making their way down to other public trackers, limewire soulseek etc. The non-members may think they were not affected but this time everyone is affected to a certain extent. I just hope that a good replacement comes up soon though I doubt it'll be as good.
- sexybobo, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5If rippers stop ripping music because their favorite site get shut down they are letting the RIAA IFPI and the rest win. OiNK might have been a popular site but i doubt it getting shut down will affect the stream of music and other items being released.
- scott2007, on 11/04/2007, -18/+1Well, many of you may very well be going to answer in front of a judge for copyright infringement.
LOL- n0rth_star, on 11/04/2007, -0/+11shut the ***** up.
- clos, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6LOL! your a douche
- c0Ld1, on 10/25/2007, -0/+0LOL!! wow your a *****.
- clos, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2tracker.vipmusic.org is decent, nowhere near as good as oink but it does have a 'collections' section (something that oink didn't have), and a tracker called 'exigo' that specializes in loseless is fairly good from what I've heard (very difficult to get an invite though, VIP Music is easier to get into)
- Juntistik, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1I'm looking for a invite to VIP, but its difficult to get started, do you know where their irc channel is located?

- rholland356, on 10/24/2007, -4/+0Where do we all go now, indeed! The advent of the internet has killed off the music retailers. I guess you'll have to visit Apple or Walmart or Amazon to get your download fix.
- veggiemoore, on 10/24/2007, -2/+1seeqpod.com? it's different, and you have to manually type urls if you want to download anything. but it works for me.

- denieru, on 10/26/2007, -6/+10What now?
- ayeroxor, on 10/24/2007, -18/+13um, "get on with your life" comes to mind.
- jtmeyer, on 11/02/2007, -1/+28music is a part of my life.
***** loads of money is NOT a part of my life.
oink helps to reconcile those two truths.- Rustbelt, on 10/24/2007, -13/+2Being broke is an excuse for stealing? Well, bread maybe but not music.
- HalFTW, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6copyright infringement != stealing
- leahzero, on 10/24/2007, -3/+0"music is a part of my life.

So download music that is deliberately released for free, e.g. Jamendo.com.
Oh, wait. Then you wouldn't be able to namedrop ***** indie bands. How silly of me. Carry on.

- jankster, on 10/26/2007, -1/+48It was nice having a taste of perfect community for music lovers and it lasted for a while. Sad that it's gone. I hope someone creates a donation fund to cover Oink's legal costs. Got to hate the record industry :(
- wooloz, on 10/26/2007, -0/+31I couldn't agree more. It was a site that focused on sharing quality music. Not profit, not advertising, not promoting the 'next big thing'; and that's why no commercial venture can ever provide a service like it.
- yagidem, on 10/23/2007, -4/+2100% agreed. :(
btw we posted 3 minutes apart, heh. :D

- yagidem, on 10/23/2007, -4/+2100% agreed. :(
- tossaway, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3The site is gonna be sorely missed, but I wouldnt hold my breath on anyone actually ponying up money to help them out. It's like when we had all contraversy over the AACS issue here on digg. Every one was bitching at Kevin, but you know if digg got drug into court, only a very small portion of digg users would have donated any money towards legad defence.
- securegeek, on 10/24/2007, -1/+1sad but sooo true
- scott2007, on 10/24/2007, -6/+0People who are to cheap to pay a few dollars to download a song legally and end up stealing the song online probably won't fork up much cash in this site's defense.
"music lovers" lol
They love music but hate the artists?- ryjohn, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1i can't tell you how many times an "artist" has told the crowd to go download their music or to get a copy from a friend or give a copy to their friend. bands make no money off of record sales. they make their money off of touring and merch sales. only way i know that artists make substantial money off of their music being sold is through vinyl pressings of their music by distributors other than their label.
- jankster, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3What made you think I don't buy music? I support the artists I like. I buy albums regularly and have about 250 original vinyl records and 400 cd's. I used Oink to find new interesting artists & albums that I couldn't have found out about otherwise. I also used Oink to chat with fellow music lovers. The fact that everything was free created an atmosphere that is hard to describe if you have only experienced something like iTunes. I don't think you would understand the potential of communities like Oink even if I tried to explain it to you and that's your loss.
About the donations, I agree that it's possible not everyone is interested in donating for helping the administrator. For some reason the site did run for over 3 years solely on donations as far as I know however (donating was not mandatory, I for one never gave Oink a cent) so it seems some people are willing to donate for this kind of thing despite your comments. To help Oink survive from the very high fine he's possibly going to get I am willing to donate even if I didn't donate when I was a member at Oink's, that's for sure. - photomike, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2It's ignorant jerks like you that let the major corporations get away with this *****. Do your research. The same corporations that are ruining music by ensuring its role as a profit-seeking venture rather than a creativity driven one are the only people that are harmed by file sharing. Artists hate the record industry, and all but the most commercially successful ones (ie the greedy, rich, and largely untalented ones) NEED file sharing to survive.
No one is hurting the artists by using oink.
And for the record: I too, have purchased far more music since I started using oink than I ever did before. Not only that, but Ive attended at least 10 concerts this year of bands I never would have heard of were it not for this great service. The tshirts and posters I purchased there will prove it.
I've legally purchased more CDs since using oink (more money to the record companies), and given FAR more money to the artists in the form of ticket and merchandise sales.
So tell me scott2007, who are we hurting? - Aphira, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1The thing is, the downloads often available by pay aren't usually as high a quality as those that would be put up on OiNK. iTunes wasn't allowed for a long time because of low quality rips; eMusic only rips at a V2 VBR ratio, when most people prefer V0.. etc.
I had just joined about a month ago, hit Power User in about 2 weeks by ripping FLACs of some stuff I have in my paltry collection now and leaving my machine running to seed anything I downloaded. I was thrilled when I got the invite and started browsing the site, I was able to find really good quality rips of a lot of my own personal CD collection (2500+ CDs) which are all currently sitting in storage eight states away and that I sorely sorely miss.
I woke up this morning and saw all my torrents reporting faulty to tracker and freaked out when the page wouldn't load... I am so sad to hear about this. :(
- holidayz, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0well you realize the record industry makes the records you download...and as nice as it was to download the music, how can you hate the industry? You are upset because you are keeping them from making money and they dont like that? You must understand you are taking money from them...
- wooloz, on 10/26/2007, -0/+31I couldn't agree more. It was a site that focused on sharing quality music. Not profit, not advertising, not promoting the 'next big thing'; and that's why no commercial venture can ever provide a service like it.
- atloose, on 10/30/2007, -0/+17dang. and we were about to get some new features too...
- fkr3, on 10/24/2007, -9/+3The new features will be sent via mail after various law enforcement agencies sift through the database. : )
- blue72, on 11/09/2007, -0/+93Because "m00" just doesn't sound right =(
- joefreeza, on 10/26/2007, -0/+3Music so good it will make your tail curl.
- henrycrun, on 10/26/2007, -1/+9Three month investigation involving interpol!? Oink's name, home address, and details of his life since teen age are all in the public domain. If you know where to look...

they never even sold tshirts dammit.- Mitchum, on 10/26/2007, -1/+1Yes, they sold t-shirts.
- nehalp100, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1the donations part is only in the Reuters article

Then again oink is not the be all and end all, but damn, first tv-links, now oink, they really are targeting the best fish... it's a sad day.- NorthKorea, on 10/26/2007, -1/+11now we're going to start seeing a very different flow of content.... *****'s going to be all topsy-turvy for awhile.... this is the opportunity for mid-range sites to bump up a level... *****'s going to be weird for a little while...
- nehalp100, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1nooooooooooooo i just discovered TVLINKS iS DOWN COz u sed i just used it a few days ago. Did it get shutdown ?
- d1scobiscuit, on 10/26/2007, -2/+20That oink database had everything you had ever downloaded all tracked as well. And the invitation system all linked people together....
- dapbot, on 10/26/2007, -3/+7Can those details legally be used? Downloading the torrent doesn't necessarily mean you've downloaded the music. Was that kind of information stored?
- PrettyMuchBryce, on 10/23/2007, -2/+6Well oink was a tracker so I'm pretty sure all of the tracking information is stored on their servers. and I don't see why that couldn't legally be used against people.
- themouth, on 10/26/2007, -0/+4No way in hell all of the tracking info is stored. Your ratio information is stored, but logging which bits of data came from which torrents would fill up terabytes in seconds.
- prolix21, on 10/26/2007, -1/+4your profile @ oink contained a nice detailed history of everything you had downloaded and uploaded
- prolix21, on 10/26/2007, -7/+1your profile @ oink contained a nice detailed history of everything you had downloaded and uploaded
- NorthKorea, on 10/26/2007, -6/+3hehe, me friend says dis "although the problem with OiNK is this - they have the most sophisticated anti-leech system on the planet - they log EVERYTHING" ooooooh yeah!
- ayeroxor, on 10/26/2007, -0/+16why does your friend say "dis" ? Did someone get 'dissed'?
- PrettyMuchBryce, on 10/23/2007, -2/+6Well oink was a tracker so I'm pretty sure all of the tracking information is stored on their servers. and I don't see why that couldn't legally be used against people.

- mrfreeziexp, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Me too. Send me a shout please.
- iamnoskcaj, on 10/24/2007, -4/+19NOOOOOOOOO!
THIS IS A SAD, SAD DAY. Lately I've had a SICK feeling in my stomach, worrying something like this could happen to our beloved Oink.
I was SOOOO hoping this would turn out to be another domain name dispute or problem with their host... but NOT a TAKEDOWN. For *****'s sake, people don't PAY to download on that site. What a TERRIBLE misrepresentation of the facts. - dacapo, on 10/23/2007, -1/+4A sad day,, RIP,,, any suggestions as to where most of the community will go. I'm a member of other trackers but none as musically indepth, and highly seeded as OiNK... even the music apps section was a fav of mine.... :(
- Hellevator, on 10/23/2007, -3/+30*****... Talk about a bad way to start you day.
- Triachus, on 10/23/2007, -2/+8I have a headache. Oink was the best thing to happen with internet music sharing since Napster.
My next best option would be to use theLastRipper for last.fm, in case none of you have tried. It rips music from any last.fm streaming radio, personal or general.
- Triachus, on 10/23/2007, -2/+8I have a headache. Oink was the best thing to happen with internet music sharing since Napster.
- itsmedamon, on 10/23/2007, -1/+4Ugh, this is awful. I just got my power user status too. It was a great community
- Sanchez, on 10/26/2007, -3/+43OiNK maybe be gone, but 2TB of data throughput every day can never be stopped... 5 replacements in 3...2...1...
- dogbomb, on 11/03/2007, -1/+45But if there are 5 replacements - thats 5 seperate userbases, none of which are going to be as strong as the root.
- n0rth_star, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1We need to move to one site, as a whole. somebody organise that...
- Pixelante, on 10/23/2007, -2/+0Wiishful thinking. Do you really think you can beat the combined power of Law and Money?
- viewofeverlast, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1pssh, pirates always win. it's going to take more than one takedown to end music piracy. record labels will die before music-sharing does.
- nehalp100, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1they'll never end it. Try to get DRM on audio CDs ! huh oh yeh you can just record from the headphone socket. take that IFPI

Im sure another site will pop up soon.
But I am slightly concerened about them coming after individual users now.- tarquell, on 10/26/2007, -1/+2im not
- ampersand2001, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1if anything, they'll target the people that upped over a few TB's...I doubt they would bother with anyone under 1TB uploaded...
- ferrouswheel, on 10/25/2007, -0/+0They'll also go for the people that consistently up pre-release stuff,
- ninjedd, on 10/26/2007, -0/+17OiNK is dead, long live OiNK, viva la revolution!
- wordglue, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0Tricky thing it is to live long once you're dead...sigh, OiNK we were not worthy.
- wooloz, on 10/23/2007, -3/+6darn it, a 1.2 ratio on 100GB, and all for naught! arrrrr!
- dogbomb, on 10/23/2007, -3/+10Yeah... you got naught for that 100GB you downloaded. Pfff.
- PrettyMuchBryce, on 10/23/2007, -1/+11Well this totally just ruined my day. Now what do we do?
- orlyfactor, on 10/23/2007, -0/+15Hope your IPs weren't logged and then confiscated...
- SomeImagination, on 10/26/2007, -0/+6Confiscated?
- drakethegreat, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1So UK police are going to send the IP database to all the private sector companies around the world to sue people? That would be illegal but then again I don't know UK law however that sounds utterly ***** retarded. Not to mention then you can just pull the whole well thats not my IP since its dynamic and my ISP uses PPTP so then they have to get the ISP involved. I doubt 100,000 people have to worry.
- scott2007, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0Call a lawyer?
- buzincarl, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0all IP's are logged so I guess you just gonna have to either sit tight and worry or change our ISP provider, this way you loose your IP with a bit of luck, or what you should have done is used a proxy to connect to the server :)
- orlyfactor, on 10/23/2007, -0/+15Hope your IPs weren't logged and then confiscated...
- Torx, on 10/24/2007, -2/+17oh noe, im feeling really icky right now.. where will i get all my obscure dnb music from now?!!??
- mastahlee, on 10/24/2007, -0/+13My feelings EXACTLY! This was my source for keeping track of the Drum n' Bass scene. There is no ***** legal alternative!
- betobeto, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3Soulseek? No, seriously - I've found tons of hard-to-find music there that wasn't available elsewhere. Not even Oink. Unfortunately finding high bitrate versions, unlike Oink, can be a crapshoot.
- Copsh, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1http://www.deepbassnine.com/
- alucardx, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3same here.. i'm a huge DnB fan and this was the one place to get tons of great albums and tracks from. no clue what i'm going to do now. beatport isn't enough.
- Glitchwerks, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0UGSTorrents.com. You have a much better chance of getting in than other private sites. We have tons of DnB scene releases, classic old school, and everyone is into dubstep right now, so the tracker is full of it. No major labels. Small site, but 2,000+ releases. Also complete label discographies.
- Juntistik, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1THANK YOU!!!
I've been looking for a tracker specifically with dubstep goods on it. Most of the people I talk to don't know what Dubstep is. So THANK YOU!
- Juntistik, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1THANK YOU!!!
- d1llinja, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0Sad thing, I was on OiNK because of the drum and bass to. They had the hard to find stuff....
I never bought less records after using OiNK, those corporate story's are bollocks.
Long live db9.
- diearzte, on 10/26/2007, -2/+42my day is ruined. This is the worst ***** news ever.

- Ryan121, on 10/23/2007, -4/+3Why do people run these sites within the UK? Surely they relise they will be caught sooner or later.

- endlessraining, on 10/23/2007, -0/+7Most of the servers were in Holland.
- kelly86, on 10/26/2007, -14/+12i'm kinda lolling at my friend who paid someone 20 bucks for an invite a few weeks ago.

Way to proof read. I can understand why the author didn't, what with the length and all.- BordrGuy108, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Seriously: "...in financial terms causes immeasurable lost to record companies."
- buzincarl, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0Yeah well all the record companies are ripped off all over the world, if they want to sort the problem #1 don't release on Internet #2 create there own media player to slow down piracy, #3 sell them for less then they make more profit, too ridiculous the prices
- BordrGuy108, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Seriously: "...in financial terms causes immeasurable lost to record companies."
- unruled, on 10/23/2007, -0/+10I used to have an oink account, but it dissapeared when they moved to .cd :/
---
They paid to upload and download music, some of it not yet released by record companies.
what is this paying bs?- MrPineapples, on 10/23/2007, -1/+8It's BS, donations were always voluntary. The BBC story is reporting this too, they really do have a responsibility to get there fact right before publishing something.
- zongamin, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3Nothing happened with the accounts when it moved to .cd.
- mrkmrk, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1And paying to *upload*? The ***** are they talking about?
- buzincarl, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0they try and make it a big deal so people watch it, and dont feel sorry for the dude, there are 1000's of warez sites out there, which all link to illegal content, which is usually linking to warez forums, so it cant really be stopped, many of them are hosted in india.
- itsmedamon, on 11/09/2007, -1/+80some of these articles are (obviously) putting a bad spin on it
A Cleveland Police spokesman said: "This extremely lucrative and creative scheme consisted of a private file-sharing website being set up. Membership was by invitation only. "The site allowed the uploading and downloading of pre-release music and media to thousands of members.
"Members paid 'donations' via debit or credit cards, ensuring their continued access to the site."Users were only invited to join the site if they could prove that they had music to offer, according to an IFPI spokesman.
We all know that donations were not required to use the site. This was NOT a moneymaking scheme.- iamnoskcaj, on 10/26/2007, -0/+27Yeah, I commented on that local newspaper's article, mentioning it was a poor representation of the facts, because it was NOT a pay-for-download site. That was total BS... and clearly will only serve to demonize (no pun intended) the site, it's operator, and it's community of users even further.
- atloose, on 10/26/2007, -0/+16so far none of the "news" sites reporting this have bothered to act as anything more than IFPI lackies.
- itsmedamon, on 10/26/2007, -0/+13yeah, it's too bad that pretty much ALL of the media coverage you see on this is going to make OiNK and other online music communities look awful.
- aazn, on 10/26/2007, -1/+1ArsTechnica and Torrentfreak don't pwnz0r?
- bassfanatik, on 11/03/2007, -0/+29Donations were NOT required, and you were NOT required to "prove" that you had music to share..You could download up to 5GB without having to do anything!
- physivic, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1...and since it wasn't a moneymaking scheme, we know it will be replaced with something even taller
- iamnoskcaj, on 10/26/2007, -0/+27Yeah, I commented on that local newspaper's article, mentioning it was a poor representation of the facts, because it was NOT a pay-for-download site. That was total BS... and clearly will only serve to demonize (no pun intended) the site, it's operator, and it's community of users even further.
- pwnrOiNK, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4i have the same feeling right now when elitetorrents got raided... verry sad news.
just when they uploaded the leopard torrent.. sigh.- tarquell, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1yep....same here, although i feel there are sites that can EASILY replace the kind of content elite pumped out. But OiNK was particularly special in the music & perhaps mac apps
- shagie, on 10/23/2007, -2/+11worst news ever.

- Floris, on 10/23/2007, -2/+4Thank ISPs for Usenet!
- iamnoskcaj, on 10/23/2007, -1/+15A scary thought: What if it's users were pursued..... considering the high ratio requirements, AND the desire within the community to WELL EXCEED the "required" ratio. I've seen account there where people have downloaded 20GB and uploaded 250GB. Man.... this is really sick. My stomach hurts. This has totally ruined my day.
- ninjedd, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1apparently the site promised that should this happen, no details could be obtained
- ferrouswheel, on 10/26/2007, -0/+1Got anymore info about that promise?
- fhbeano, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1That's a promise that I would put zero faith in. If they had cooperation from the ISP, then during a three month investigation they could *easily* have harvested plenty of IPs and data to go after users without ever needing to directly access the servers or get into the database. Just a network sniffer and some time...
- fkr3, on 10/23/2007, -0/+5Or, they could just seize the server and the logs and the databases and do whatever they want with the info - like pursue any or all users.
Just think, 180,000 people are probably only a Mail Merge away from being sued.- dragofrad, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0Mail Merge? wouldn't it be more like forcing the ISPs of many countries to hand over customer details relative to IP addresses?
What countries actually allow this? - mirton, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0ISPs are obligated to keep logs for as long as 8 months about their client's activities, and this information can be accessed by authorities with a warrant. Now this process could take a bit more time because they would have to do it in every country separately, and every countries judicial system differs.
I'm actually a bit worried since I didnt use any encryption or proxy, but I only managed to upload about 1GB and download 4.5 GB, which is nothing compared to some that had a ratio of 200GB/500GB :)
Still, 180K users is not that much, so I would say that they "might" try to go after those hardcore ones.
Your thoughts?
- dragofrad, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0Mail Merge? wouldn't it be more like forcing the ISPs of many countries to hand over customer details relative to IP addresses?
- SSUK, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2Protip: Don't do illegal things without at least a proxy. Sure, it can be traced back, but at least give yourself a BIT of protection.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/23/2007, -0/+21337tip: Setup an ssh account on a web server in a datacenter where you control all the logs and then proxy/tunnel through that baby.
- fkr3, on 10/23/2007, -0/+5Or, they could just seize the server and the logs and the databases and do whatever they want with the info - like pursue any or all users.
- MetaMars, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Terrified.

- TimCadieux, on 11/09/2007, -1/+104What a great use of Police time and money, I feel safe to walk the streets now, knowing that none one will walk up to me and give me a pre-release of the next Britney Spears album....whew, that was a close call.
- ninjedd, on 10/26/2007, -1/+11yeh, all this planet cares about anymore is money
- bjornmmcc, on 10/23/2007, -2/+2Two years and 100's (if not 1000's) of hours wasted by the police on this. I bet they would have found Madeleine by now if they had put that much effort into searching for her, and not wasted all of your tax money doing the bidding of their corporate masters.
- saltinekracka20, on 10/26/2007, -2/+1It wasnt a waste of tax money, they just busted criminals. Sounds like they did their job to me.
- holidayz, on 10/26/2007, -1/+0exactly, its not a matter of safety, its a matter of stealing money. Like robbing a bank when nobody is there. nobody is in danger but they still get away with money
- zspeed78, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2The record industry makes a lot of money, thus PAYS A LOT OF TAXES. For all the money they bring in, I believe its worth it for the Police to spend time protecting the rights of the record industry. If you were a farmer, and people went and STOLE your corn, the police would help you too.
- BLiNk0, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Ohhh I get it, so corn = artistic sounds, oh no wait ones a ***** vegetable
- saltinekracka20, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1He made a good point, and you totally missed it. I guess by your terms a farmer's corn should be free, too, since anyone can grow it.
"artistic sounds". That's the dumbest defense I've ever heard to try to justify a crime.

- allengeer, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2worse. and so how did you get your computer after your apartment was in flames. and why are you reading digg if your apartment burned down?
- fkneh, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Agreed. This is so sad, I went for a shower and came back and my torrents didn't connect. Then I checked the site and it was *****.
- aqzman, on 10/23/2007, -11/+6Ah! I really wish I knew about this site before it was shut down!
- ShyGuy91284, on 11/03/2007, -4/+29That's what happens when you violate the #1 rule with things like this: You don't talk about it. It seemed like everyone who wasn't in it wanted an invite, so it was probably pretty well known to some extent.
- zongamin, on 10/23/2007, -6/+5how stupid of you to think that
- cros, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1You're right. This is what happened to some of the large software/game groups a few years back when many of the large distro sites were taken down. To many new people, too fast. It's a double-edged sword though as more people generally add to the quality of a community.
- Kallius, on 10/23/2007, -6/+1Am I the only one who sees an invite-only forum as being elitist? Pardon me if I experience a moment of schadenfreude, then.
- Sma11fish, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0When I signed up, it wasn't invite only.
- Matdredalia, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0Exactly. Remember what happened when we talked about Fight Club? Oh, wait...
- Aeskel, on 11/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, to your information cops were on OiNK for good 2 years, patrolling every torrent, every user, making notes and records.
With all the information they gathered, they discovered the place of servers, shut them down, track down legendary OiNK and put an end to his "evil" site.
- rOket, on 10/23/2007, -19/+11LOL, proof that invitation only doesn't help you hide from anti-piracy campaigns...
- SSUK, on 10/23/2007, -1/+7More like it doesn't protect you from stupidty of users spewing out how much they love OiNK.
- physivic, on 10/23/2007, -2/+4oh, yeah, loving something that allows you access to an art form that is the best of human emotive achievement is 'stupid'
get a grip. we simply can't afford music. this is seriously a kick in the gut for me. it's an attack, I feel attacked by rich people again. artists should work for a living just like us all. talented or not, we all have to.
the idea that i'm supposed to forgo good food to listen to the same music over and over is repulsive. this isn't about saving money, for us. it was about more music than we'd ever buy. it was about access, not just 'free' access, but access at all
- physivic, on 10/23/2007, -2/+4oh, yeah, loving something that allows you access to an art form that is the best of human emotive achievement is 'stupid'
