- stevenr21, on 11/04/2007, -0/+146you don't pay for a subscription to OiNK.. this is ridiculous.
- dptechie, on 11/04/2007, -1/+97"Tried to catch the man while he was logged on..", "Downloading music onto the website", "Paying subscriptions". Wow, it's obvious that they have no idea what they are talking about, and it seems the police are as ignorant as the newscaster.
- ktchpmn, on 11/04/2007, -0/+61agreed. the misinformation in that video was mind-boggling.
- cmgarcia, on 10/25/2007, -1/+59Everyone can say what they will, but it will be a long time, if ever, when a site replaces OiNK in terms of maintaining high quality and rare ups. Now I'm just paranoid about having donated in the past. We're all gonna die.
- felbie, on 10/25/2007, -2/+57I like the Old Music Old version of Winamp and the use of Napster in the video, how long have they been waiting to use this footage?
Winamp, it really woops the llamas ass - hirshi, on 10/24/2007, -2/+35***** the pigs.... long live the pig.
- aznhomig, on 10/24/2007, -0/+29Don't copy that floppy!
- Skanadian, on 10/24/2007, -2/+27The OiNK owner is a hero now.
- BaderG, on 10/24/2007, -1/+21lolz at Eminem music at the end
- betobeto, on 11/04/2007, -0/+17But of course, everybody knows truth and facts in news don't sell... unlike speculation and made-up rumors.
- Bonekhan, on 10/24/2007, -1/+18I pray for OiNK himself, and the administrators and moderators I knew so dearly.
- Okari, on 10/24/2007, -1/+17Good luck taking them all down. There will always be piracy so just give up.
- modifiedbears, on 11/04/2007, -1/+17Or we could step out of crazy land and not pretend like someone losing their life is equal in any way to someone downloading an album.
- HalFTW, on 11/04/2007, -0/+15Anyone can complain about the factual inaccuracies in this piece here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/
It is worth doing, here are some example complaint reports: http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/text/ecu_aprjun07. ... - PixelEater, on 10/24/2007, -0/+13Or a martyr.
- mrjit, on 10/23/2007, -0/+13haha Watch the 2nd video response.
- njcarlos, on 10/25/2007, -0/+12I can't believe they actually took the time to record this raid. What do they think this is some high-intelligence operation? He was doing this from his HOME, how hard was it to find this guy? I hope he gets off easy on these charges, cause OiNK was the BEST site for high quality, authentic rips of some of the most rare albums out there. Most people didn't use it for scene releases, but rather finding gems that were lost in time, like vinyl rips or albums that have been scratched so much they are virtually impossible to find. They are also wrong in saying all 180,000 members pay subscriptions, there was no subscription at all... it was just a donation they asked and I'd say 50% never donated. It was, however, invite only as it grew in popularity to maintain quality control. R.I.P. OiNK, best audiophile community to ever come around... I mean, not that I was a member or anything.
- Wilson, on 11/04/2007, -0/+10It should have been, maintaining the same British newscaster voiceover: "Record industries remain baffled over what has become known as 'The Internet'. Recently, authorities have come into possession of portions of 'The Internet' in a vain attempt to understand its ways, alas it is to no avail. They are confused as ever as to how any one individual could be interested in digital audio samples which are actually appealing in quality. More at 11."
- Hortinstein, on 10/25/2007, -0/+9jesus could they have the facts any more mixed up....talk about shoddy reporting.
I hope OiNK comes out of it okay, I loved that site - NolanFinn, on 10/24/2007, -1/+9I was just checking to see if anyone else commented on that. Must have been stock footage from the dark ages.
- koven, on 10/25/2007, -0/+8It is, but this isn't the national news, just a local BBC news centre; they'll have a lower budget anyway. We don't have stock tickers or constant graphics showing headlines usually.
This is better than usual for the local news. Usually we get cats stuck up in trees or something equally as boring. - SpykerSpeed, on 11/04/2007, -0/+8In civil society, laws are made by the people who make up that society. Apparently millions of people don't agree that music labels should charge as much as they do, or be as stringent about the DRM. Your argument is wrong on both levels, because murder isn't something millions of people do every day.
- goofygarber, on 10/24/2007, -1/+9That whole thing was wrong... nobody has to pay for oink, they don't download music from his servers (its peer to peer for ***** sake), he isn't making money and he isn't downloading anything to his server.
Lots of misinformation, no facts. Good police video though. - driftwood07, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7at least provide the link http://youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU
- zioxide, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7they do this "massive" ***** investigation and can't even get their ***** facts straight...
- Markpdotcom, on 11/04/2007, -0/+7No surprise, thats a local news report, where newscasters go to die...
- Jschluet, on 11/04/2007, -1/+7And now people all over the UK unfamiliar with oink will assume that file sharing sites are run by greedy bastards who exploit their consumers.
(This is not the case, for those who have never heard of oink) - Markpdotcom, on 10/24/2007, -3/+9You pray for the administrators??? ***** off... this is England, we don't do that ***** here!
- Aythun, on 10/24/2007, -1/+7Music sales are down by a third since piracy started? Maybe because the music sucks. The record companies need to get their heads out of their asses.
- sonycam, on 11/04/2007, -0/+6Wow, never knew the BBC took complaints so seriously, they pretty much investigate them all and publish findings. Other companies should follow.
- jiminizer, on 10/24/2007, -1/+7wow, never realised OiNK was being run from 10 minutes down the road from me
- sonycam, on 10/24/2007, -0/+6Haha, you know that most of the coppers who nicked the bloke are downloading their music from his rips!
- iMaciMan1, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6is it just me or is the BBC more bare boned and relaxing to watch than the American equivalent? On pretty much every news channel here there are moving graphics that would give you a seizure.
- Kurisuku, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5Damn. I donated to this site too. I'm pissed.
- haveacigar, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5I think you will find as it is a UK based "crime" you should be refering to FACT... ***** FACT
- bouche, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5I'm not sure that they even know what they arrested him for. They keep referring to oink as a site where people upload songs and other people pay to download them. Ridiculous!
- SixFeetUnder, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5This is a transcode.
- JustFender, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5ok
- honkaform, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Gah, this fear-mongering is such *****.
- d03boy, on 11/04/2007, -1/+5Go through the proper channels to get it changed? Joking right? You must not live in the US.
- zenmasher, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4That was ***** up....why...why did you do that to me?
- sonycam, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4I'm seeing 2 SWAT vans with fully automatic weapons, 2 Helicopters, anti-terrorist squad, 5 regular police patrol cars and some bio-chemical warface experts on hand just incase.
- Thomaschaaf, on 10/24/2007, -1/+5ifpi and BPI put ads on www.oink.cd... that cant be legal
- SystmBetatester, on 10/24/2007, -1/+5***** you to the music industry. we dont need music. we dont need to pay you. take what you have and be happy. millions of people have lost their jobs because of technology and music labels will too.
- frenchkick, on 10/25/2007, -1/+5YOU DO NOT PAY TO DOWNLOAD
jesus get it straight they make him seem like he murdered someone
he asked for donations to keep the site running not for any personal gain
and not alot of people donated anyways - petedee, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4This is from my local news station (i actually sat down and watched this report whilst eating my dinner this evening) and trust me this is probably the biggest thing to happen in the region (technology wise) since... well probably forever.
I'm not surprised that the local police actually had no idea what the site did since - to be honest - they aren't that bright up there. The report says he "Made 100s of thousands of pounds in illegally downloading music onto his website" WTF that doesn't even make sense! Besides, if he did make that much money then why the hell would you be living in a terraced house in the worst place to live in the UK (see this site: http://www.channel4.com/4homes/ontv/best&worst/200 ...
The police say "over 180,000 members to this website who pay subscriptions to access the site" errr... no, it was donations and it was purely to keep the servers up and running, I would donate money now if there was any chance that we could get the guy out of jail. Its shocking that they are going to arrest someone when they clearly don't have the facts straight.
Anyway, screw this I'm not going to buy an album again in my life if I can possibly help it. - sonycam, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4No, let's spend the tax money which was planned to be spent on policing piracy into policing murders.
- 2shae, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3no way!
You had to pay to get into OiNK?? - tizz66, on 11/04/2007, -10/+13People will always murder too, so let's give up policing that too.
- wallish, on 10/24/2007, -1/+4Maybe he lives in Canada?
