- kete00, on 10/16/2007, -4/+158Jamiroquai is giving away their music? That's virtual insanity!
- sealabcore, on 05/20/2008, -9/+63The only reason these artists can give away free music is because they have made so much damn money from previous sales that they don't need to ever make profit off of record sales again. Radiohead can do one tour and make more money than CD sales of this album ever could.
This business model only works for previously rich rockstars...for example RADIOHEAD - tamahagane, on 11/02/2007, -1/+42Wow making music because you like to make music? What a novel idea...
- DerrickDice, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29I really hope this suceeds the music business really needs to change
- xOpifex, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29I actually listen to Jamiroquai regularly, it's good stuff.
- bouche, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27obviously this rumor won't come true if Radiohead's sales and profits prove the theory wrong. However, I'm predicting that Radiohead will come out hugely successful and other artists will definitely follow suit.
- bethlagarrison, on 10/10/2007, -8/+32"Some of the music industry's biggest names"... what is this, 1997?
- plizard, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25ok that was awesome
- stoanhart, on 10/14/2007, -0/+24It should probably be noted that these bands are NOT giving their music away for free. They are giving YOU the opportunity to pay what you consider to be a fair price, of which "nothing" is one option. It's already obvious that this is being interpreted as "free". If you want this type of thing to continue, you should probably pay something...
- ehalasey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23That's true now, but I think the idea is that, because they're so filthy stinking rich, they're more able to take risks in investing in this emerging market, thus making it easier for newer artists not to have to sign their souls over for the sake of distribution. Besides, ever heard of places like boomkat, bleep, or addictech? They've _been_ selling downloads for a long time because electronic music and quite a few related genres have been doing it this way for _years_. Rock music's just behind because it, along with hip-hop, are the genres most mired in all of this RIAA *****.
- schweeet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Radiohead will probably be successful with their strategy, because of one thing really. Who wouldn't pay for their free music just to smack RIAA et. al. in the face?
- Crosshare, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Once they see how much the middle man was scooping out of the pot they will.
- hammerpants, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17You're half right.
- kmadigan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Don't look back in anger, record companies.
- Desolite, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15arg, beaten to it. i'll just have to digg you up and live vicariously through you.
- kete00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Oh no....Was there a plane crash?
- LordHelmet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Actually, artists make very little off of album sales when its all said and done. Most of the money is made by touring.
- usmevans7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Harvey Danger gave away their latest album for free a while back too.
- wingo123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11This is splendid. I had my fingers crossed that this Radiohead move would start something, but this is happening faster than I expected - the Radiohead album isn't even out yet and it's already snowballing. Radiohead was EXACTLY the right band to do this.
I suddenly have hope for the music business... - hammerpants, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I'm more of a K-Fed fan myself. Papazao!
- loveddevol, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Jamiroquai?
***** YEA - maussimo010, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11whats funny is that all the people in the states who rip on Jamiroquai or on Oasis usually claim to be 'in the know' with whats going on in the music world...then something like this happens, and a name like Jamiroquai, whom they have not heard hide nor hair from since 'Virtual Insanity' or Oasis's 'Wonderwall', think these are are irrelevant bands because they dont have endcaps dedicated to them at Best Buy or they're not on the front page of iTunes...did it ever occur to anyone who bags on any of these bands to check the real numbers? Jamiroquai and Oasis have been doing quite well with albums sales as well as touring in the UK...just because a band isnt blaring all over MTV and iTunes or FM radio does not mean they are irrelavant by any means...Robbie Williams, anyone? check the numbers...thats all im saying...
- MaZAKaR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Cheaper CDs, more expensive concert. I am okay with that, seems like a fair trade, and I feel more comfortable knowing the band is there, and that they will actually GET the money that they are worth there. I prefer to buy CDs for bands at the concerts, instead of in store. Unfortunately, I am located in Oregon, and bands usually just drive through. Also, this would help weed out those crappy bands that make it big just because of advertisement from a huge record company, I am tired of crappy music getting popular!
- Scintillatus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11We do?
- canewediggit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9perhaps a prelude to a precursor to the beginning of the end
- wingo123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Huh. That's actually kind of a genius move, now that I think about it. It gives you a free (if you choose) taste, but then insures that true audio lovers will go out and buy the hardcopy anyway, as indicated by the replies here. They really put some thought into this...
- shredswithpiks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8what about bands like Evanescence who became popular over the internet before their CD ever hit a major label (which probably would never have happened without the internet fan-base)?
- shredswithpiks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8you shouldn't need documentation to know that radiohead has a crap-ton of money
- ganzhimself, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I don't think there is much, if any music blaring over MTV these days... Just saying.
- wingo123, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Bleep rules. I've been buying music there for years now - it's basically what killed CDs for me originally (well, besides Napster). HUGE bitrate MP3s or lossless FLAC (your choice) no DRM, cool interface, fast downloads...
- thomasprebble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Theres a lot of negativity floating around Digg this morning. Corporate bloggers are never subtle.
- urbandistrict, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I live in Cali and I do... they are a great band.
Just because a band becomes popular/or unpopular doesn't mean you stop enjoying the music you like. - Noiremorte, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I love Jamiroquai! This makes meh happy.
- mrjit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6There is music, and there are fans outside of the US, you do know, right?
- SupaFurry, on 01/23/2008, -3/+9"...following the success of the experiment..."??
The album isn't even released until tomorrow! - lefthome, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Perfectly stated. This illustrates just how locked down the music industry is in North America.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Hopefully this might be the beginning of the end (or at least a precursor to the beginning of the end).
- brjndr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Actually no, I've never heard of boomkat, bleep, or addictech. 99% of music buyers probably haven't either.
- TomRemixed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I think a lot of people like me will be dling the tracks tomorrow but then buying the actual album when it's released.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Coming again to save the mother ***** day .....
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm not a big fan of Radiohead though i do love some of their tracks, but I'll buy the album solely to support them.
- Crazalus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5In Soviet Russia, relevance defines you!
- markperia, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think it will be successful. I just bought the boxset instead of the free download. Then again Ive been a fan for as long as they've been around.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think "tape" gives away the age more than "Jamiroquai"
- DannyAndNina, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5The headline is ENTIRELY speculative--you could have technically put in any band's name. Here is the quote from the article:
"They’ll all be thinking about it now," said Stuart Clarke at Music Week. "Any big name that is out of contract such as Jamiroquai and Oasis will now see it as an option."
That is very far from saying that either of those bands is seriously considering the option. - arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6David Hasselhoff is HUGE in Germany.
- Zephkiel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Oasis sells extremely well in Britain, and they didn't do poorly with their last album in America either.
- diversionmary, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Copypasta is copypasta
- kiwiboyus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Even though I don't own a record player anymore I'm buying the box set. We need to prove the RIAA wrong people!
- YouandWhoseArmy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Last I looked radiohead wasn't giving its album away for free, they're letting listeners decide how much to pay. They will probably make oodles of money this way because even if the average user shells out 2 dollars for the album that is probably more than they got in a traditional record deal. Also, I like hard copies and am a little annoyed at the exclusive tracks one needs to shell out 40 pounds (80+ dollars) for.
