- kitsua, on 07/05/2009, -20/+251A video as cheesy as Autotune itself. It's also a good ten years out of date, but I guess it's interesting for someone who knows nothing about it. They should have kept in more of the actual explanations however, instead of that awful stuff they put in. Had they chosen better musical material for him to sing, it might not have sounded so 'computerised' - they were forcing it to correct too much.
If you want to see where modern pitch correction software is at right now, be prepared to see what was previously thought to be impossible (and Melodyne is much better than Autotune anyway);

- S1ngular1ty1, on 07/05/2009, -1/+134Autotuned, I can tell by the amplitudes.

YES! - fadingsignal, on 07/05/2009, -1/+101I remember hearing Def Leppard do some radio appearance a few years back, where they sang a slow acoustic song and all harmonized together during the choruses, etc. The host said "Oh my god that was incredible!" and the singer said "Thanks... but there really shouldn't be something astonishing about a couple of guys being able to sing in tune...".
- datagod, on 07/05/2009, -1/+86Auto-tune can't fix retarded.
- fadingsignal, on 07/05/2009, -1/+85I've produced/engineered a few bands, and have used auto-tune at a very low / slow setting to fix some flaws in harmony tracks etc, mostly so we didn't have to waste more money going back into the studio. Most vocals you hear in any genre are run through auto-tune just to polish them up a little, but if you can HEAR it being adjusted then the singer sucked and you need to do another take, or you're jumping the shark again, purposefully making it sound like Cher. Any tool can be abused!
- Joshislong, on 07/05/2009, -1/+75..and from having heard quite a few 'tunes in my day.
- benroy, on 07/05/2009, -0/+70And it's made by Germans. You know Germans always make good stuff!
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -6/+75LIKE AAA BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE
- diemunkiesdie, on 07/05/2009, -2/+631. If I was a betting man I would say this is probably fake.
2. If it is real, you realize she wasn't TRYING to sing. She lip-synchs to a track because she is focusing on dancing. Which is exactly why she would sound tired and exhausted like she does in that video. If she was trying to sing she would be much better.
3. Listen to her acapella and see what you think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fM2xxSQCQM#t=2m54s
*Edited link to point to what seems to be the most recent clip of her singing acapella. Rewind to the beginning of the video if you want to see more. - Peko, on 07/05/2009, -1/+59Personal Melodyne anecdote: I tried it on myself singing. I'm not normally very good, imo. Turns out I'm pretty good on pitch and with melodyne I was pitch perfect. Still sounded like crap - but pitch perfect crap.
- MrSkills, on 07/05/2009, -0/+53My standard post whenever autotune appears on digg:
When autotune (or Melodyne etc) is good:
- when it's part of the toolbox of talented artists and producers, being used sparingly to get the best from the singer (e.g. allowing the most expressive take to be chosen even if the tuning isn't as good)
- when it's used as a deliberate over-the-top effect. You may not like it personally, but it's the artist's prerogative.
- when an artist writes their own songs but maybe isn't the strongest singer (as long as it's in moderation)
When autotune is bad:
- when bad singers who would not have had a career 20 years ago get massaged to sound acceptable. They still never sound like good singers, though.
When autotune is a crime:
- when it's used unthinkingly on good singers who don't need it, taking all life out of their vocals.
As an audio engineer who is sometimes hired to tune vocals, I pride myself on doing the absolute minimum necessary. I *like* imperfection. Sadly, once you start tuning, you start hearing every imperfection, and it becomes difficult to hold back. The even sadder thing is that these days it's the singers themselves who are usually insisting that you tune every syllable. - Xeller, on 07/05/2009, -1/+52Different reasons, I would imagine. Guys like MJ, who had a lot of dancing to do, can't possibly do all of his moves while maintaining a steady voice that doesn't have a lot of audible huffing & puffing. Others may have some vocal issues that pop up, maybe like a sinus infection, right before a big show that can't be canceled.
Not that many of the reasons should be justified, but auto-tune probably can't magically give someone a voice that's not there. - lougoose, on 07/05/2009, -2/+51Ah it hurts! Make it stop!
- kdmkdmkdm, on 07/05/2009, -0/+46You're talking to yourself again...
- Amadeus2490, on 07/05/2009, -1/+45I have experience recording and mixing, and i've used auto-tune myself. Once you have the ear for it and know what to listen for, auto-tuned vocal lines (that aren't overly-done for effect) sound so. . .digital, mechanical and lifeless. With a good singer, you know they sound good but there's just. . .something missing. Then, you listen to the acapella track and are like "Ahh, because it was Auto-tuned."
If the industry only had singers who sounded damn good live, on stage with no processing or effects, the industry would be about 95% smaller. - IrvineKinneas50, on 07/05/2009, -1/+44That guy is in every science documentary ever filmed.
- jemka, on 07/05/2009, -4/+42I want to auto tune the front page.
- AndrewDB, on 07/05/2009, -16/+54***** you Auto Tune.
It should be an illegal practice in music. If you use it, you shouldn't be allowed to win any awards.. - SauceSpot, on 07/05/2009, -1/+37Garbage in, slightly shinier garbage out.
- ryanonfire, on 07/05/2009, -4/+40So why do people lip sync when they can just use auto-tune?
- Alverez, on 07/05/2009, -2/+35Step 1. Get on a boat
- RiceNCurry, on 07/05/2009, -1/+32LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE
- thejackyl, on 07/05/2009, -0/+31He's like science's mascot
- Cerebron, on 07/05/2009, -3/+31Just like football players should be able to use steroids as a tool to help them play better.
- wafflesomd, on 07/05/2009, -5/+32Auto tune is killing music, the same as every other tool is.
To think it's the bane of originality is just absurd. I quite enjoy the tool, and it can be very helpful in some cases.
If you're an engineer, you'll understand. - kitsua, on 07/05/2009, -0/+27You can adjust the formant of your voice too and subtly change the tone.
Better yet, generate some pitch-perfect harmonies and drown it in reverb - you'll be radio-ready in no time! ;-) - painting, on 07/05/2009, -0/+25very clever, its almost as if you thought of that all on your own without watching the video.
- SEN5241, on 07/05/2009, -3/+27Dugg for the Pluto hating science guy singing like *****.
- slickbananapete, on 07/05/2009, -2/+26Jay-Z hates auto-tune too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z13AjI8n4I - com2, on 07/05/2009, -3/+27Eventually music will get to the point that electronics can make ANYONE sound good, then we will be at the point that only the good songwriters and the labels of course, will make money, the voice talent will just be a persona... wait... aren't we there already?
- ryanonfire, on 07/05/2009, -0/+23It doesn't work miracles :P
- dafragsta, on 07/05/2009, -0/+23Celemony also has something that they keep insisting is just around the corner... polyphonic mapping. This was something that people thought would never happen. (And it's still only in a demo video for now, so it might not.) What digital audio production has done with convolution for reverb and analog gear is just amazing. You can play with what was extremely expensive or otherwise impossible in a studio 20 years ago in your own bedroom for about $1K in software. You can even do some amazing things with what's out there for free now. KVRAudio has TONS of really high quality VST plug-ins for free.
- bradleyland, on 07/05/2009, -1/+24That video just blew my mind.
- thejackyl, on 07/05/2009, -7/+29Auto-Tune is only hurting pop music, but that sucked anyway so who cares?
- cluckcluck, on 07/05/2009, -7/+29photoshop for music.
- consonance, on 07/05/2009, -0/+21Dugg for Direct Note Access. Assuming nothing in that video was faked (and it didn't look it), audio engineering will enter the next era. I'm serious. Think about it: what's big in music? Sampling and mash-ups (mash-ups to a lesser degree). In five years, the copyright on The Beatles' and Elvis's earliest albums will expire. The music industry will start doing what Hollywood does best--re-using old material. Did you like "Since I Left You" by The Avalanches? You haven't heard anything yet. Soon, artists will be able to not only re-use classic tracks but re-interpret them as well. We'll have "Please Please Me" on the blues scale and Elvis with Bollywood-style intonation. Bob Dylan will actually sound like he can sing. The future is the present in the past.
- CarStan, on 07/05/2009, -2/+21Thank Auto-Tune for this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X3IdrxxXdU
'Now i'm singing with may GAYYYYY voice..' - nickhughes, on 07/05/2009, -1/+20I disagree. A well auto-tuned song should not be easy to hear. Otherwise, it's not well-autotuned.
- Aroundtown27, on 07/05/2009, -0/+19she sounds really generic in that acapella song but thanks non the less
- lektroluv, on 07/05/2009, -1/+20And 95% better.
- com2, on 07/05/2009, -1/+20And produce 95% less profit.

- copypastry, on 07/05/2009, -3/+20Dugg for truth
Also dugg for being an audio engineer. - kitsua, on 07/05/2009, -1/+18It's called DNA (Direct Note Access) and will be available at the end of summer. See my link above.
And yeah, it IS amazing what you can do nowadays. KVR's cool too. - inactive, on 07/05/2009, -1/+17That video is amazing. I had no idea that was even possible.
