- spooks2k6, on 12/05/2008, -1/+20Are you kidding. Digg me down if you like!! I grant you she has a nice voice, but the best thing?? I doubt it. She could sing for a thousand years and never compare to Nina Simone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByhdpvkQhco
- Henzee, on 12/05/2008, -2/+17I'm all for soul, but it is rather bland to me :/
- mehan, on 12/05/2008, -5/+18What the ***** was this *****?
I would much rather get rickrolled a thousand times. - m1lk, on 12/05/2008, -3/+16either digg is deaf or this is some sorta joke. She doesn't have jack squat on James brown or Aretha Franklin or any other greats. And that is by far the worst soul drumming I've ever heard. Its repetitive, there are no breaks or fills. Listen to this Aretha Franklin track, this is real soul
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0 - samson7842, on 12/05/2008, -1/+13Let's see:
Kinky looking white chick with second hand store style; check
Good voice, with no real soul. However, most people can't tell difference so it works; check
An "OK" song that sounds like it was written and produced 30 years ago. So, that makes it sound more "real;" check.
Al the makings for a faux soul revival for faux soul enthusiasts.
Come on guys. Give me a break. At what point are we going to hear something that doesn't sound like my parent's music? I want music that hasn't been done before. Not shallow impersonations of a style that was done to death in the last century.
It's wannabe music. The real thing has already been done and can't be repeated. That's what made that sound so classic. On to something new, please? - kurrent, on 12/05/2008, -5/+15youtube music videos are making the front page now?

..................................., - inactive, on 12/05/2008, -3/+12the answer to your title question is: NO
- vader101, on 12/05/2008, -0/+7No, she is derivative and unoriginal.
Unless, of course, the question was addressing "talents" beyond her voice.... - imalumberjak, on 12/05/2008, -1/+8I actually agree with the Youtube comments for once, this sounds very commercial and isn't particularly good.
edit - oh my god, the trumpet is awful. - lcarsdeveloper, on 12/05/2008, -0/+7This is rubbish, I'm sorry but I wouldn't listen to this in a million years.
You want soul?

Al Green: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cwYpefWD3Y

You listen to these classics and then try telling me that this Nikka Costa fake is "the best thing to happen to soul music".
She's not fit to walk within 50 miles of STAX Records. - Sepeteus, on 12/05/2008, -0/+6"This video is not available in your country."
But I have a feeling I'm not missing much. - Henzee, on 12/05/2008, -1/+7Yup sounds like she's selling toilet paper.
- ide1337myself, on 12/05/2008, -1/+7I would say this is a sorry reflection on soul music. Her voice is nothing compared to the greats of soul like Aretha, Mavis Staples, Dionne Warwick, or Patti Labelle. There are a lot of women who could sing Nikka Costa's songs just as well. I think she is a the perfect illustration of the fact that no one sings soul music anywhere near the level that they did in the past.
- grahamenglish, on 12/05/2008, -0/+6Okay, she's got talent. But the best thing to happen to soul music? Since the title is asking, I have to say no. And who gives a ***** about the trumpet player being a caterer? This is a manufactured story for a dynamically-deaf presentation of a talented but not legendary voice (who wouldn't be half as alluring without the cleavage laden video).
- bigp3rm, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5Raphael Siddiq is doing a much better job of that if you ask me.
http://www.raphaelsaadiq.com/
If you know anything about soul. - GREEDOnvrFIRED, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5She is the best thing to happen to The Electric Company since LetterMan. Come on. Listen to that song. It really could be sung by a fuzzy blue puppet with a black paper throat and red paper tongue glued to the back of its throat.
- sockpuppets, on 12/05/2008, -1/+6She lives with Prince?
- bp332106, on 12/05/2008, -2/+7side boob wins
- cmansley, on 12/05/2008, -1/+6What is it with her not having middles to her clothes? She seems to prefer exposing from her neck to her belt. Not that anyone minds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiI_caFfquA - lcarsdeveloper, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3Wow, I never thought I'd see Sharon Jones mentioned on Digg of all places! You obviously have superb taste!
Anything from Daptone Records is amazing, for anyone who wants to hear a sample download their free podcast radio show, the Ghetto Funk Power Hour:
http://www.daptonerecords.com/binkygriptites-ghett ...
(Essentially it's a sample CD, but they've done it like an old school radio show, it's awesome!) - blackrage, on 12/05/2008, -1/+5Um...Shes DEAD
- oldhick, on 12/04/2008, -5/+9Great song. I really enjoy her style.
If you dig that you might dig some other stuff:
Raphael Saadiq - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=968Tbbp4LW0
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq9nb5WpMb8 - CoD4, on 12/05/2008, -1/+5nikka who?
- Popscores, on 12/04/2008, -4/+8I've seen her live with Prince...she's amazing
- spooks2k6, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3Preach brotha!! take em' to church!!!
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3Print is dead.
- kelarsblackdrop, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3she's fine
but can we cut the hyperbole please
exaggeration is like, the most horrible thing, ever - gfair, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3Her promoters spread the word to her fans to digg her, so her ***** shows up on the site.
- SawButter, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3Say hello to Google-Youtube's censorship.
- nyx210, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Soul is dead. Deal with it.
- ProKid, on 12/05/2008, -1/+3I'll take old Nikka
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiI_caFfquA - Fogdelune, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2She is more along the lines of Blues/Funk than soul. I recently saw her in concert, and she is phenomenal. I don't understand how she isn't more well known, and we are stuck with listening to Beyonce and Mariah Carey every other song if we actually decide to listen to the radio.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlUHIiTwBzQ - sepllcehck, on 12/05/2008, -1/+3Somebody paid for a front page...
- t1n0m3n, on 12/05/2008, -1/+3Kudos on the wordplay.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkoBxMT8iDg - mfured20, on 12/05/2008, -1/+3*****, johnny lang has more soul than this chick.
- adiggityam, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Right on.
- adiggityam, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1There we go. This could be a decent front pager.
...my Fallout 3 character is named Stax.... - kestermatsumoto, on 12/06/2008, -0/+1Can't really agree with title's hyperbole but she certainly is a lot better than most of the mediocre, overproduced, rehashed, masturbatory nonsense that is referred to as R'n'B these days. She has nothing on Al Greene, Bill Withers, Nina Simone or Marvin Gaye but she definitely has talent.
http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=6cIQn9avW2M - twodollars, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1This definitely has more soul:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4bhKB1E6iY - adiggityam, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1/:|
Buried for title.... - faskill, on 12/07/2008, -0/+1Hmm, they've a bury as lame as an option, but not bury as crappy music... maybe in the future.
- otayyo, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Couldn't have said it better. New soul this is not.
- Dakobah, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1that sucked.
- sx66gns, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Steppenwolf Cover FTW
- paulexander, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Now we can stop stringing Amy Winehouse along and let her sink or swim...
- whyisntcakesin, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1http://www.imeem.com/people/tgi08NG/music/8osTf8ar ...
much better contemporary soul than this garbage - loopyloopy, on 12/05/2008, -1/+2stupid title, but dont blame it on her. she goes alright. she's been around forever it seems. she was a hit downunder in the early 90's then went back to the states and we havent heard much since other than Like a Feather. Some might recognize the Garbage track Cherry Lips (i think) which takes a sample from Everybody's got their Something.
- oldhick, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Luckily there are a million different styles out there for you to choose from. What is an example of what you would call modern day "original" soul?
Returning to the roots of a genre isn't always phony. As digital instruments and tools have changed the sounds of soul, funk, and jazz, some people feel it has also taken the "soul" out of soul. Returning to a live, analog feel isn't as much phony as it is an attempt to try to find what the genre so expressive and creative in the first place.
Different strokes for different folks! I love music so please give me some examples of what you find interesting and appealing. I would love to check it out. -
