- JesperL, on 10/12/2007, -8/+123If you've heard an Australian sing, you'd know why they're passing this bill.
- joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26After Australian Idol was first aired, it was only a matter of time before they would try and outlaw it.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -10/+33Wow. After reading the headline I thought for sure this was a fascist American bill.
- Caps, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28Comments like that make me realise why so many ignorant people like you still think bands like AC/DC, Wolfmother, Jet, The Vines and Silverchair are from the US
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25The Howard government. Like Bush wannabees. Seeking to bend their country over for corporate interests. Good job, asshats.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I know somone who's been fined twice for it.
- MattH, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22"Wow. After reading the headline I thought for sure this was a fascist American bill."
It is ;P
Australia signed the Free Trade Agreement with the US and one of the provisions is that the Bush Government got the Howard Government to agree to was reform Austrlaias copyright laws . - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17They're shooting for a new slogan:
"Australia: Entirely Peopled By Criminals!" - titaniumdecoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16It's time people start standing up to the MAFIAA.
- Sp0rAdiC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11My city recently had cops downtown enforcing it "to create awareness".
Their reasoning: "Even if you look both ways and it looks safe... it might not be!"
I haven't crossed the street since then! - Ramtech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12lol....
Girl goes to play outside... steps on a nail... says "Oww"... and boom... lawyer at the door and Micheal Jackson... - tkcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+111. see singing carolers
2. call cops
3. profits! - andygravity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12....."risked making criminals out of everyday Australians"
ashes to ashes i guess right? - deanau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Oh thats harsh.
- spudlyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Copyright makes me sick. The fact that somebody gets paid every time Happy ***** Birthday to You is performed in a movie or a goddamn restaurant is exactly what is wrong with copyright. That song is part of our (lame) shared culture. The fact that copyright can maintained on tunes penned over 100 years ago is an outrage.
- icepick314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7good...
no possibility of "Australian Idol" at all....
US need this kind of law so we can cancel American Idol.... - abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"We all live in a convict colony!"
Oh, wait, am I allowed to sing Balmy Army songs out loud?!
Thats just not cricket! - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No, it's the ARIA.
Guess what - change the letters around a little bit. ;) - iakupo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I listened to the whole thing before digging..
Now wheres my prize?
...oh here it is: you can't sing Christmas carols - bowels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There goes my plans to make my first million traveling the karaoke circuit in the outback.
- thiskid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7So how many people do you think actually listened to the 15 minute podcast before digging it?
- iakupo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I think your STFU gauge needs to be more sensitive
- bunnybash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"So how many people do you think actually listened to the 15 minute podcast before digging it?" - there was a written story further down... i read that instead...
but besides that we in Australia have some of the stupidest copyright laws, so much so that i ignore them whilst maintaining a clear non-pirate conscience. Up until earlier this year it was illegal here to rip your CDs into another format such as MP3 or WAV or whatever, so technically any CDs that you put onto your iPod or Sansa e280, ya they were illegal!!
Needless to say i also ripped my DVDs to Ipod and my Media PC and also to my PDA, all of which is also technically illegal, but at the end of the day who the hell cares, I know that i haven't stolen anything and if the movie studios are worried about making a profit here is a tip...
Stop paying Tom Cruise 20million dollars a movie!!!!
Anyways this country is stuffed!!! still it's the best country in the world...
Boonie forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - greyhacker45, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I really hate these kinds of headlines because they are extremely misleading. There are thousands of things we do every day that are technically illegal, but it wouldn't be practical to actually prosecute such a crime. No cop is ever going to fine you for singing out load unless it was profane or racial. The RIAA would have to sue you on the grounds that you were violating this law, and what proof are they going to have that you were actually singing at that specific time? Come on. Actually read into the law to identify the real flaws in it's writing.
- PopcornDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Persecuted or prosecuted? I don't recall anyone being persecuted for jaywalking ever...
- NightBlade40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not really, since we have prawns here and not shrimp :p
- Geekbeard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Argh!
- bunnybash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol our last australian idol sold about 13 albums!!!
- demesne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As an employee of the Copyright Agency, I think authors and artists deserve to get paid for what they do.
But this is taking it too far. - jono1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and a barbie is a doll.
- abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"lol our last australian idol sold about 13 albums!!!"
One to each of her family members... :P
Now now, you have to admit, *some* talent is shown on Idol-like shows... just not much... - Apoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The elves are real though.
And you can buy Pixie Stix at most grocery stores and candy shops. - skywake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5and the US was founded with pixies and elves?
give me a break......
the history of the US is WAY more fuked up then the history of Australia - mbrutsch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You do realize that singing out loud in the presence of other persons constitutes a 'public performance', and, as such, is already a crime in the U.S.? (Unless you pay the appropriate fees, of course.) Why do you think restaurant chains have retarded birthday songs? Because they won't pay the fees necessary to be allowed to sing 'Happy Birthday To You'. This is not really news, except insofar as people are unaware of how widely it's already in effect. Australia's just catching up with the "civilized world".
- BenSerwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everything will eventually be illegal, and life will be like it is in that fat pie cartoon.
- crapbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The U.S screwed us over with the FTA, joining the Iraq crusade, now wheat. What next?
- StevePB07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An interesting take on the issue of intellectual property. I guess we're well on our way to using sign-language as "the" means of communication just so long as someone doesn't come up with a way to copyright the use of the hands in communication. BTW, who's take credit for the middle finger? This is just silly.
- Uranium118, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2History repeats itself, they'll all be criminals again!
- onemadsquid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, Barbie is a doll, A barbie is a bbq grill. And Foster's is Australian for a really big can of terrible beer.
- underdog138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Kelly Clarkson is a good example of real talent coming from an Idol show.
- onemadsquid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was persecuted by a mean band of Swallows for Jay walking. I dont' think they like Jays very much.
- onemadsquid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bravo! Bravo!
Pay me $20,000.00 and I'll give you some SERIOUS action...and without any Scientology strings attached! - dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I can think of a couple right now that I want arrested for singing out loud. Talk about tone deaf.
- thenps, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why do the Australians hate our freedom?
- onemadsquid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did!
- Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1So the only Paris Hilton concert worth going to would be down under?
- Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Man, on reading my own comment, the first thing that came to mind was that there have been way too many shrimp on that barbie...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Fake, inaccurate story.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2"risked making criminals out of everyday Australians"
