- TheCooler72, on 07/25/2008, -30/+249Whoa, whoa, whoa.
It's fine to not like Nas, but it's absurd to then use him to delegitimize all rap as not a "true" art form.
Just like any musical or visual form, rap can be used in demeaning, vulgar ways, but it can also be edifying, moral and inspiring.
I suggest you check you own sense of self-importance at the door before you blanket an entire art form with the negative aspects you see in one of its performers. - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -8/+184Man Diggers are such ***** hypocrites, you know if some white rock band did this you would be all over their nuts.
- lhughey, on 07/25/2008, -22/+142Obviously, you've never really listened to his albums. This guy is a great rapper. I'm pretty sure i could take a small cross section of your words and make any case i'd want.
It kills me how people who no NOTHING about rap always have the biggest mouths. Now don't get me wrong, there are tons of bad rap on the radio, but anyone who knows anything about it knows that the good stuff is not on the radio.
And concerning the whole formal education thing. I graduated from college, but it doesn't make me any smarter than the next man. Bill Gates and Michael Dell dropped out of college, does that automatically make me marter than them? - dusingaz, on 07/25/2008, -6/+112If we know anything about petitions its that they are highly effective.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -276/+379I can't take this guy seriously. With all the money he's made from his albums he could have at least completed and received his GED.
I'm tired of rappers supporting agendas and sounding like complete idiots in the process.
He isn't anything special. He took the easy way out by dropping out of MIDDLE SCHOOL. Then got lucky making millions from his "art form" known as rap.
Here are some of his brilliant lyrics:
"What's up *****, ay yo, I know you ain't talkin 'bout me dog"
"You a dick-ridin *****, you love the attention"
"and got my first piece of ass smokin blunts with hash"
"I wave gang signs at the youth, thats down for the cause"
"Rap became a version of Malcom and Martin"
Racism....... check
Homophobia....... check
Denigration of women....... check
Poor moral character........ check
Sense of Self-Importance........ check
He's just another rapper. - wjackson, on 07/25/2008, -6/+91Diggers offering their thoughts on the relevance of Nas...is like Nas offering his thoughts on the relevance of Diggers.
- CrazedLeper, on 07/25/2008, -16/+95Yes, a GED. That way he could get a job, maybe, and make 30,000/yr. Maybe. More likely, 20k. Which would you choose?
- thespiff, on 07/25/2008, -10/+80Sorry dude, you just don't get it. If you actually listened to Nas in recent years you'd realize he's one of the few guys in rap that have the right idea. He's the exception and you are claiming he fits the rule. He actually treats music as an art form and understands that what he says can influence the people who listen.
You're on the outside ignorantly looking in and forming obnoxious opinions based on what you see through your little window. You are no different than the people who banned Elvis, or thought Black Sabbath were a bunch of devil worshippers. Just because you don't have an ear for this music doesn't make the music wrong. - grungegbunny, on 07/25/2008, -14/+74Terrorist Fist Jab for my brotha NAS.
- unfilterthought, on 07/25/2008, -8/+64For everyone saying that Nas is a hypocrite for all the stuff on his albums....
Nas = ENTERTAINMENT
Fox News = SUPPOSEDLY NEWS
Notice the difference? - wtfchrlz, on 07/25/2008, -14/+68Every single lyric you quoted was from very early on in his career, with the most recent ones being 7+ years old, things change. Also, what the ***** does getting a GED have to do with anything? Where exactly does he sound like a "complete idiot"? Seems like you just hate hip-hop in general and are trying to make a point by taking lyrics out of context(Ether).
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -23/+75Nas is considered a master of his craft.. you just provided a poor sample of lyrics. Classics like "If I ruled the World' changed the history of hip-hop forever:
It'd be, paradise, life, relaxin black, latino and anglo-saxon
Armani exchange the range
Cash, Lost Tribe of Shabazz, free at last
Brand new whips to crash then we laugh in the iller path
The Villa house is for the crew, how we do
Trees for breakfast, dime sexes and Benz stretches
So many years in depression make me vision
The better livin, type of place to raise kids in
Open they eyes to the lies history's told foul
But I'm as wise as the old owl, plus the Gold Child
Seeing things like I was controlling, click rollin
Trickin six digits on kicks and still holdin
Trips to Paris, I civilized every savage
Gimme one shot I turn trife life to lavish
Political prisoners set free, stress free
No work release purple M3's and jet skis
Feel the wind breeze in West Indies
I make Coretta Scott-King mayor the cities and reverse fiends to Willies
It sounds foul but every girl I meet would go downtown
I'd open every cell in Attica send em to Africa - paradisetonight, on 07/25/2008, -7/+52listen to nas - sly fox, he just performed it on colbert report yesterday, mind-rattling lyrics to say the least
- ryan5billion, on 07/25/2008, -5/+50***** EXACTLY!
- dchaosdx, on 07/25/2008, -2/+46...and fox news refused to accept them. hence being used as table and chairs on the colbert report.
- completerobot, on 07/25/2008, -5/+43BIASED
"BIAS" IS NOT AN ADJECTIVE
YOU MAKE ME ANGRY - jmpeagle, on 07/25/2008, -9/+44that's like delivering 620,000 petitions against earthquakes. What a waste of time. It's like PETA petitioning a slaughterhouse. Why would a business care about the opinions of people who would in no way be their customers?
- ryan5billion, on 07/25/2008, -12/+46I think that's awesome.
Will it accomplish anything... No.
But at least the man is doing something, instead of
just sitting in a digg comment board complaining about
Fox News, or FAUX News or whatever the hell else people
in here call it. - Karma85, on 07/25/2008, -3/+37Where do you come off with that nonsensical argument that Nas is just another rapper? The lyrics you quoted are from "Ether," a retaliation song about Jay-Z because Jay-Z had insulted him in a previous song. They had beef, so the best way to tackle on beef between 2 rappers is to spit verses at each other and Nas slaughtered him. Do not take things out of context, because that is exactly what you did, just like what Faux News does...
- Aitese, on 07/25/2008, -3/+35That's the Digg enigma...how a group of people can get together and show collective outrage at the encroachment of their freedoms and various injustices, but still come out swinging with comments steeped in closet bigotry and deep seated resentment...I see above we're back on the "why can't I say *****?" arguments again, as it's impossible to carry on a perfectly normal conversation without dropping an N bomb every now and again. How they can disagree with the existance and popularity of Fox News, yet share the same views and ideals on race.
Basically we have a group of people all for freedom of expression and speech...unless you're saying something they don't like. - colinmhayes, on 07/25/2008, -2/+34I'm guessing you've never actually listened to Illmatic.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -16/+46 "Fox News must be stopped!! And this has nothing to do with getting attention for my new album. I repeat, this has nothing to do with getting attention for my new album which is in stores now."
- samcent, on 07/24/2008, -36/+67Fox is a bias news channel. Have you watched Robert Greenwald's Outfoxed ? If not, its worth a look regarding Fox.
- inactive, on 07/25/2008, -3/+32errr listen to his new album..... He speaks out against JJ and AL
- pauls88, on 07/25/2008, -50/+77He's delivered 620,000 petitions or he's delivered 620,000 signatures on a petition against Fox News?
He'd look pretty stupid delivering 620,000 blank petitions... - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -7/+33"With all the money he's made from his albums he could have at least completed and received his GED."
Why? That's pointless. Most people get their GED for one thing... money. Or college, which is usually done just for money. If you're already getting money, why do you need a GED.
"I'm tired of rappers supporting agendas and sounding like complete idiots in the process.
He isn't anything special. He took the easy way out by dropping out of MIDDLE SCHOOL. Then got lucky making millions from his "art form" known as rap."
So he should have taken the "hard" or just to be fair, the "normal" way. Honestly that logic is ignorant. Hell, if I got "lucky", i'd be doing the same thing and you'd be dumb as hell if you didn't. It's safe to say he made a good choice.
And what does that have to do with his petitioning anyway? Hell, at least he tries (even if it fails) while were sitting on our asses. We need more people like this. Instead of people who just bitch and moan all the time. - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -1/+26If NIN or Radiohead had done this, there would have been over 50,000 diggs!
- tkstock, on 07/25/2008, -9/+33Your use of the word "*****" in every sentence really drives home your point. I'm glad you add it because I couldn't understand what you're saying otherwise. The continual use of the word adds so much credulity to your argument too.
"This world would be a lot better if people looked at the work and the words of people," unless those people are spewing filth such as yourself. Looking at this guys "words", he should've gone back and got a "*****" education. - abbasatpsu, on 07/25/2008, -2/+26Very poor choice of lyrics and a non-sensical comment. GED doesn't tell anything significant.
Besides, please look Nas up. He is considered a great lyrical poet and one of the hip-hop greats. - geekchic, on 07/24/2008, -3/+26"Now if only we could get all those people to pay more attention to digg"
You want to drown them in pictures of fluffy kittens and whacky buildings which we have all seen hundreds of times before? - exeprime, on 07/25/2008, -2/+25dugg down and blocked for being retarded.
- onlycomment, on 07/25/2008, -4/+25I'm going to go ahead and not repeat the many arguments that have been made against you that I support so I’m going to go ahead and get to what I truly want to say.
I'll be honest when I first read your comment I simply wanted to reply with anger and simply call you ignorant, but I’ll do you one better; I’m going to PROVE your ignorance.
Now I’m a huge fan of Nas. I’ve got all his albums and even managed to cop some of his songs that went unreleased and have listened to all of them (well over a hundred songs) many times over.
Before I get started I’m going to go head and agree with you on one thing: it's wrong to support violence in one's lyrics, but in Naps' defense he only did it in response to Jay-Z, but it doesn't even matter anymore because both Nas and jay are man enough to get over it and work together to continue making music rather than killing each other, which is how real MEN handle such a situation. Bush? Cheney? McCain? Are they MAN enough to not go to war and send American citizens to die for an unjust cause? We'll see.
Now then on to Nas' truly great poetic music that I think you should check out if you do in fact give a damn about what you're saying and actually care about learning. Then you need to know what to look for when listening to hip-hop/rap. 1. You have to look for how well the lyrics flow from one line to another; literally how well does it sound to the ear? 2. Lyrics; is what he's talking about important? Is the way he saying it creative and truly original? 3. Album; does he care about how the album is put together? Does the order of the songs matter with respect to message and feel of the music itself?
Nas excels in each of these three categories better than ANY OTHER MUSICIAN I HAVE EVER HEARD. And that's including Bob Dylan of whom I’m also a fan, but in my opinion Nas delivers more quantity and more meaningful messages to his listeners than Bob Dylan does.
So now it's time for me to give you and everyone else who's interested in what I’m discussing to listen to some examples:
Ghetto Prisoners
Life is what you make it
Nas is like...
K-I-SS-I-N-G
Life's a Bitch
It ain't hard to tell
Watch dem *****
Black Girl Lost
Some of us have Angels
Rewind (one of the most creative songs I’ve ever heard)
Once Mic
Rule
America
Sly Fox
Black President
N.I.G.G.E.R.
I Can
That's just a SMALL list of his great musical accomplishments, and I only had 2 songs from Illmatic, but to TRULY APPRECIATE Nas you have to listen to the entire album while reading the lyrics otherwise you won't catch his style and his message, and his references to history.
Gods Son, Illmatic, Untitled, Stillmatic, Hip Hop is Dead, I am... are just a few that will also drive home my whole ridiculously long argument. But you know what? I am involved with my community and so is Nas, but Nas is doing greater things than I am because he has the MONEY to do it and he puts his money to better use than that vast majority of people. He has never sold out his morals nor character, and him trying to take down a propaganda machine that is corrupting the minds of American citizens is more honorable than most (99.9%) can claim of their own actions.
If Nas wasn't being pro-active and trying to contribute to a good cause then you'd be criticizing him for not doing enough since he's rich, but since he is rich you're criticizing him for being fake even though he’s been active his whole life and has never sold out EVER.
You're caught in your own hypocrisy.
In the end, he's trying to make the world a better place while you're sitting on your ass and doing nothing.
Don't denigrate an artist in order to mask your Racism.
The End. - inactive, on 07/25/2008, -4/+24Looks like someone's angry they dropped out of school themselves.
- geekchic, on 07/25/2008, -6/+25You know - there is a better solution.
An impartial press which presents the news, not opinion.
Stick to providing the facts and let the people make up their own mind - presuming that the average Fox News viewer is capable of doing that of course. - skabyss, on 07/25/2008, -3/+22To attack an art form is to not [to even try to] understand it.
- CrazedLeper, on 07/25/2008, -4/+22Now, that's funny.
- skidooer, on 07/25/2008, -7/+25" He took the easy way out by dropping out of MIDDLE SCHOOL. Then got lucky making millions from his "art form" known as rap. "
Sounds to me like he took the smart way out. - tkstock, on 07/25/2008, -1/+19It took Kinko's a while to do the job, but they did it well.
- feanix, on 07/25/2008, -0/+18Ugh. Digg can be HORRIBLY biased at times. At least it doesn't claim to be "fair and balanced" though.
- dsoldier, on 07/25/2008, -3/+20Or maybe you're being buried because you're attacking him for being a drug user, when in reality, you have no f***ing idea. Just because he didn't list it doesn't mean he's pro drugs. Sounds like the kind of argument Fox would make...
- inotocracy, on 07/25/2008, -4/+21Nas didn't get lucky and strike it rich, the man is talented lyricist and has been around for quite a while. He has plenty of rhymes that aren't along the lines of what you quoted. Regardless, what should it matter who or what he is? This is a good thing hes trying to do with this popularity.
What does his education have to do with it? - okaroleo, on 07/25/2008, -1/+17I'm guessing because overwhelming majority of diggers are nerdy whites?
- Ukonu, on 07/25/2008, -2/+18Don't understand why you're getting dug down. Nas has been highly critical of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Of course, the original poster has no idea and just wanted to use this digg as a chance to make another blanket statement about how hypocritical he thinks blacks are.
- gtluke, on 07/25/2008, -5/+21i'm sure they will change their ways now. i mean having double the viewers of any competing network is just a terrible business model
- tkstock, on 07/25/2008, -7/+22Let me clarify, since it's apparent people don't understand. There are scores of professional athletes and celebrities that go back to school and get a degree - this shows their fans that it's important and to not put all their hopes in becoming famous and not needing an education.
I didn't say this guy should stop what he's doing, but he could go back and get his GED to set a good example to the numerous followers who choose not to because they don't see the value in it. - liljay2k, on 07/25/2008, -3/+18I second that exactly
- normalkid0615, on 07/25/2008, -8/+22I disagree with your early stuff, some of his BEST work was his first album he recorded at 18 Illmatic.
Nas is a brilliant educator. He educates people about:
