- JessicaSarahS, on 09/13/2008, -1/+36This was by far, the best concert I have ever seen, ever! Thanks to NIN for putting on an incredible light show and performance, and to Wired for helping explain it all.
- bigonthepigdan, on 09/13/2008, -2/+30I saw NIN at Red Rocks last week.
as a computer nerd, the "dull moments" blew my mind. even my fiance, who calls it the "***** you like an animal song", came back a huge fan. - bigonthepigdan, on 09/13/2008, -0/+19-4 for not reading the article
- truthfilms, on 09/13/2008, -1/+19This show must be seen. This is an historical endeavor of video art and sonic mastery. It would make MoMA envious and Bill Viola proud. Im glad you have shed light onto the technical aspects of this experience. NIN should also be commended for their innovation in ticketing for the show through their site which was the most enjoyable experience I have ever had in purchasing tickets and attending a rock concert (a phrase that does this show no justice.) Whether collaborating with one of the most interesting artists to date, Saul Williams, or pushing the limits of music distribution by giving away one of Nail's most prolific albums ever, nine inch nails are giving us all a window into the future of not only music and the music industry but also technology, fine arts, the chaos of the concept of ownership of intellectual property and politics.
Thank you for reminding us all why we choose to try to do better with our own art work and free our selves from our own limitations and the limitations imposed on us by the past.
Also obviously this experience will make you cry and rock your head off!
I'm glad this is article was written before the second leg of the north american tour to give people a chance to see it.
Thanks again. - RobTyree, on 09/13/2008, -1/+18I'm a long-time NIN fan - I've seen them probably 4 times live. I saw this show while in Salt Lake visiting some friends, and simply put, it was amazing. By far the best NIN show I've ever seen, and it would definitely rank in the top 3 concerts I've ever seen (and I've seen some good ones). You truly do have to see to understand. I'll happly shell out another $50-$100 to see it again when it comes through Vegas on the second leg of the tour.
- theperfectdrug, on 09/13/2008, -0/+14I guess you didn't make it to the third page. It mentions BSOD: http://www.wired.com/entertainment/music/news/2008 ...
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -0/+13I saw a Reznor A/C unit at a restaurant a few weeks ago.
No one believed me when I told them it was his grandfather's company.
It's true! https://www.rezspec.com/
From the FAQ:
Is Trent Reznor, the lead singer for the band Nine Inch Nails, associated with Reznor HVAC Equipment?
Trent Reznor is a direct descendant of George Reznor, who founded the Reznor Company in 1888. The Reznor Family sold the business in the 1960's. Reznor heaters are still manufactured in Mercer, Pennsylvania - Trent's home town. - b8man99, on 09/13/2008, -0/+13Trent for president!
- 08christylynn, on 09/13/2008, -2/+13That was a really a great article. :) I got the chance to see this particular show in Oakland, and the following show in Inglewood as well! The show in Inglewood had a few extra touches that weren't at the Oakland show... which was neat to see. The work put into the show... absolutely shows!! It was such an extraordinary and mind blowing experience. I think its really cool that they hooked up with some of the master minds behind the crazy cirque de soleil shows! Trent, Rob and co. put a very unique touch to the shows... to a great "rock concert'! However, something tells me that if he does decide to later go just white lights in a club... many fans will whole heartedly accept the transition. ;) He is after all... a gifted musical genius without all the fancy shmancy techy toys. Go Trent!
- requieminadream, on 09/13/2008, -1/+10As I said on the Wired site:
Saw their first rehearsal in Los Angeles before the tour started up, and again at the Inglewood show last week. The show needs to be seen to be believed. No video could do it justice (though I look forward to hopefully seeing it in 3D, filmed by James Cameron no less! =-O)
Thank you Wired, for writing this article. I was wondering how much was actually done live and how much was pre-rendered. Stuff like "Only" and "Terrible Lie" in particular. How about some more pictures of all the gadgets they've used? - sourfriday, on 09/13/2008, -1/+9This show is so intense, I am afraid that if I get GA next time I may go blind. Amazing work guys. Visually stunning.
- Jhiaxuz, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7I'd kill to see NIN or Tool in concert...
- StEligius, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7Was there, saw a show, music was great, lights and imagery were extremely interesting. I wish I could have had a chance to dissect all of their equipment. The LED curtain, the analogue synths, the monome device.
You really must go if they come near your home town (that is if you half way like their (his) music. - Wicked68, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6Man, that show is the bomb! I went to the L.A. show on Sept. 6, and it was spectacular. It was my first NIN concert and it didn't disappoint. The stage show was amazing and sick; and the encore was long as hell, definitely worth the money. It completely overshadowed the Radiohead concert I went to in August. Whoever said Trent was past it, please shoot yourself in the head. This show must be seen. INCREDIBLE.
- crashbang, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6I would say maybe it has more to do with pushing the experience of going to a show than just straight up rock and roll. If you wanna see rock go a to a small venue and see a show. That is a lot closer to purist experience I think your talking about.
- gibman, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5I agree with bullhead. Some of it (those other videos) was nice, lights further out in the audience, the apparent fireworks streaming out... and with videos of this quality we're never going to have a meaningful discussion. Trent went above and beyond in doing something incredible with the technology. The NIN show was the best I have ever seen, audio was perfect, visually beautiful, provoking, and just rockin... I hope he releases something to DVD so others can appreciate what he has accomplished.
- araza13, on 09/13/2008, -1/+6We got a small taste of it in Australia last year, and the shows that NIN put on stand on there own without the tech.
But i'm hoping they bring this rig out when they tour Oz again. (BSOD and all) - matrixbandit, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4I saw the show in Cleveland, which was pretty awesome, but if I had the chance to see them at Red Rocks I wouldn't hesitate.
- OfNumbers, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4I never thought a post like this would come from you, theperfectdrug.
- bullhead2007, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Neither of those videos showed me anything that topped the NIN thing in my opinion.
Neither the music nor the lights are better. - thegunner78, on 09/13/2008, -6/+10thank you Wired! I was getting sick of telling people the lighting was NOT staged! I was waiting for someone to explain how it was done. AMAZING!!
- zarvensha, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Yeah, its fantastic, yeah, its amazing, yeah I'll not get a chance to see it, no I'm not bitter(RIGHHTTTT!)
(Skulks away to the corner to cry)
Gotta love Trent, gives away his album, brings about new distribution model, makes a motza, creates a whole new way of doing live video at concerts, blows everyone out of the water, what next?
Trent, love your work! - Gatesophile, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4I saw NIN at this year's Lollapalooza, and it was easily one of the best (if not THE best) concerts I've ever seen. You really do have to go see it, videos just aren't good enough. Very cool to read how this show was accomplished.
- Richandler, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3This is why I am a lighting designer. This stuff is fun to do.
- koreaski, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3fuuuck. I hope they put out a kick ass blueray from this tour.
- Nrvana423, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3I saw them in St. Louis, and it was amazing. I didn't think anything would beat Tool's visual show until that night.
- k21958, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3This is just the kind of article I'd been hoping for. It is so hard to describe to your friends what you saw at the concert when you don't really know what you saw. This show is dazzling and beautiful and delightful to experience many times over.
- noumuon, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3that was decent. while i have yet to see the nin show, i can say that daft punk's light show doesn't even touch various pink floyd light shows. i'd be curious to see how nin's compares.
- punx777, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3Red Rocks was the best concert of my life. Go Trent.
- phantomsranch, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3how can you say that when you didn't even go to the show, because of that explosive case of diarrhea, and had to give the tickets to your mom, we all laughed pretty hard when she showed up in your seat
- SkullyBocks, on 09/13/2008, -6/+9Yes its a great light show...I miss the old Trent though, he was way more intense in the earlier days.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-y8UUdr5kA
Nice to Have Robin back though. - y34rz3r0, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3i saw this tour 5 times so far for the summer tour and now im goin to two more for the fall tour ...easily the best performance out there and ***** U2
- SolipsismX, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2The difference is the amount of layering and how much of it is done on the fly in a dynamic fashion. Most other bands (if not all) just have canned animation going on in the background; in other words, the light show is the same every time. With this, the light show changes just like the music. And again, most bands only have one layer of LED screens.... when you see 3 work together, it creates a really disorienting effect where you can't tell what exactly is going on.
- SolipsismX, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2Yeah, he sang better 13 years ago too (a higher range) but that just goes with age.
I don't think it would be right if he was 43 and acting the way he did back then though, but I admit it would be really cool to see the old Trent play with a light show like this. - KenAer, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2And the layers! NIN has three separate layers and two of them from what I could see were interactive with the band. Unprecedented performance IMHO.
- headhot, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2I was at both. Daft Punk at Vegoose and NIN in Philly. NIN was better. Daft Punk was amazing, and put on an unbelivable show.
BUT.. the technology and innovation at the NIN show was unlike anything I've seen, I mean a 50' x 30' interactive drum machine? How could you top that. - Jhiaxuz, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2The nearest Tool has ever come to me is roughly 1800 kilometers away. I live in Atlantic Canada and suffice to say all we get in Halifax are not the bands I prefer. All the good shows happen in either Quebec or Ontario before they pack up to go further out west.
I could fly to see them, but realistically I don't think I can pull a cool grand for the flight and hotel plus whatever the prices are for awesome seats. Not anytime soon anyway. - missybombay, on 09/14/2008, -0/+2NIN has never just been about "rock and roll". It's an overall artistic experience.
- capndan, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2I've been to 3 NIN concerts now and they are always absolutely amazing. I only wish I was old enough to go to the Fragility Tour or even earlier =/
- ChayD, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2Like it, especially the layered screen idea. Noticed that they're using MA lighting consoles.
Also Dugg for BSOD :) - wolrah, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2Saw the Cleveland show and if I can get the time off work I'll be going to the Columbus show when the tour hits North America again. As a long time NIN fan it was amazing. Now knowing the technical side of it I'm even more impressed. Not at all surprised, Trent's always been up on technology, but still impressed.
- phantomsranch, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2went to the POP show and this NIN tour. Trust me, you never seen anything like this, because it is unprecedented. So no, POP was nothing like this at all.
- Ventolin, on 09/13/2008, -0/+2I remember seeing at least 3 people vomit at the Awitha Teetha tour due to the heavy light shows.
- iheartcrack, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1But did you buy tickets to "The Gun Show"? Seriously, did you see the weights in that last photo in the article? LOL!
- trunk8, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1I was at the Oakland show, it was my first NIN concert and it was amazing. I saw Tool for the first time earlier in the year in San Francisco and it completely blew me away, now I can't decide which was better :o) Too bad the Tapeworm project never materialized, collaborations between Trent and Maynard would be EPIC.
Fun fact: The only Tapeworm song to ever be released was called "Vacant". It was later remade by A Perfect Circle on their "eMOTIVe" album under the title "Passive". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapeworm_(band) - yaryarhumphump, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1I saw them about a month ago and it was the most mind blowing show I have ever witnessed Trent is a god in the music world....
- phantomsranch, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1I was fortunate enough to be at the show at Red Rocks. I get goosebumps thinking about it. It was the best show I have ever seen in my life, hands down, bar none, no questions asked.
- davidbeile, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1I can't wait until they come to Omaha, NE on November 26th
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1I saw the show at Red Rocks and was blown away. Best show I've ever seen.
- niteskunk, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Not surprised, haha... Gave Up with the red and blue strobes is pretty intense even if you're not epileptic
