- Solkre, on 10/24/2009, -1/+52Now they can stop all those pirated music videos on YouTube used to generate income for unscrupulous individuals!
Oh wait, they're just going after fans again, nm. - Nintendesert, on 10/24/2009, -0/+47"YouTube to produce log files identifying who uploaded as well as who viewed 500 specific videos."
Viewed? Really? Wow. - jrm125, on 10/24/2009, -1/+33Oh cmon, YouTube is already overactive in monitoring audio tracks. Ever try to upload something with copyright music in it? YouTube actually detects that crap and cuts your audio track.
Besides, bands should be happy if their stuff goes viral. I doubt many people are ripping the YT tracks to their devices...it's free publicity and way better than MTV ever will be. - borez, on 10/24/2009, -2/+23OK... for the thick headed music industry out there: People make silly videos, people look for tracks to accompany silly videos, find tracks and add music to silly videos, other people watch silly videos and think: "Oh man I like really that music, who's it by?" So... Silly video watcher looks up band, likes bands other music and buys or downloads their album. Silly video watcher then gets into band and attends concert, maybe buys next album, maybe not, but tells friends, they get into band too, attend concerts... band profit.
But... thick headed music business want to put a stop to person using bands music on silly video in the first place... So nobody ***** profits.
Question: What the ***** part of this process does the ***** thick headed music business not understand and want to put an end to?
Ok.... I swear the world is full of ***** idiots. - acknotSW, on 10/24/2009, -0/+12The more they tighten their grip, the more their profits will slip through their fingers.
EDIT: They get it borez, they know where it is going and they know they can't maintain the same profit levels in the new world.
They think they should be paid every time any copyrighted song is played. They know the consumer won't stand for it, but that doesn't stop them from trying. - okcomputer01, on 10/24/2009, -2/+11Warner Music and Youtube have a wicked sense of humour:
-What I was looking for:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n42Mftz60A4
-What I got:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trrRo3kGRv0
Notice the lyrics. :) - DaviDTC, on 10/24/2009, -1/+9Hey check out this video...
haha you are going to be sued now! - doublsh0t, on 10/24/2009, -0/+7My youtube videos (piano covers) are covered by fair use. But the video that EMI flagged and forced Youtube to put a royalty-earning advertisement on? Yep--the one that their little constructed celebrity, Selena Gomez, happened to "favorite" on her youtube profile. At least they didn't have it taken off I guess.
- DhalsimHibiki, on 10/24/2009, -0/+6Its ***** anyways. I am in Ireland atm and oftentimes when I chat to friends in Germany, I send them youtube links and almost every time it tells them that the "content is not available in your country".
not only do the fans lose out this way, but the artists too. - acknotSW, on 10/24/2009, -0/+6I've said it before and I'll probably say it a couple hundred more times over the next few years, but it is the height of insanity to believe that you can release something that can be digitized to the general public and then control what they do with it. Things change, get used to it, adapt or die.
- MacHarborGuy, on 10/24/2009, -5/+11Google - Do no evil (but do comply with everyone elses evils)
- bringitontimx, on 10/24/2009, -0/+5obligatory is the word you're looking for.
- borez, on 10/24/2009, -0/+4Exactly... they're idiots.
- InactiveUser, on 10/25/2009, -0/+4Dear Google.
Please stop promoting our products or artists for free.

Music and Film Industry. - Jupichan, on 10/24/2009, -0/+4You're about to be buried so fast, you'll think you caught the plague.
- skipvt, on 10/24/2009, -1/+4Really?
- dougm68, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3Sue me?! What'd I do?!?! Oh well, back to utorrent.
- BookaShade, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3Sounds like the musicians probably suck and they just want to get some money.
- SmokenJoe, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3This is just a money grab they refused to sign a contract with GEMA like the other people in Germany and instead went after Google. Music company being greedy again.. The companys need to stop shooting themselves in the foot. They should use Utube as advertising The courts should not be treated as their personal weapon to bash more money out of people. We are not cattle.
- AiR1890, on 10/25/2009, -0/+3Yeah, Google, and Youtube should pay hard for giving the music holders free promotion of their own music, what a bunch of crooks.
- bluebirdgm, on 10/25/2009, -0/+2As a matter of fact, as someone else pointed out, what some record companies have done is work with Youtube by embedding links to iTunes and Amazon's MP3 stores into the videos that use their songs, so "silly video watcher" doesn't even have to look up the band. It's a damn brilliant compromise, and one that every label and studio should consider.
- Yage2006, on 10/24/2009, -0/+2The audio quality on youtube while not terrible is not going to prevent someone from buying a song or album.
Nor will it stop them from buying a DVD and the music videos air for free on TV anyway.
Just them shooting themselves in the feet again :/ - borez, on 10/24/2009, -0/+2Should read: "Oh man I really like that music"
My bad. - skipvt, on 10/24/2009, -1/+3I wish I knew what the 500 vids are, I'd like to get on the list.
- endoffile, on 10/25/2009, -0/+2Which german artist are we talking about, so I know to never even bother listening to their crap?
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/24/2009, -6/+7Required "***** the riaa".
- FlyingSquidwolf, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1Here we go again.
- funkedup, on 10/24/2009, -1/+2Yep. And soon to come, a visit from the Feds!
- xMrAx, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1Hey did you know that the Music in Bioshock is owned by Sony and Sony can make money off of Bioshock videos? Surprised so was I. The music industries are now even claiming things they don't own.
- oreobarbie, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1These guys are like the mafia-- "Protection," for the music. Well, who is protecting the consumers? The people who try before they buy? This system is inefficient, even in Germany!
- bmatherlyjr, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1Uh, no Google hands over information when asked or threatened - They could still say no and take the obstruction of justice charge, but they don't they just drop their pants, bend over and begs Uncle Sam to be oh so gentle.
- Kranden, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1It ain't right to copyright!
- command76, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1I'm sure we can talk about this?...get over it, the industry is changing, get with the program you lazy sons of bitches and stop suing progress...
- threepm, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1Please Download My music... We have a few tracks available for your listening pleasure at www.thewideband.net and post them all over youtube. I 100% Fully support the sharing of music. I strongly believe that if the listener likes the music they will support the artist. Maybe instead of suing youtube these "artists" should work on making art that doesn't suck. Release an album with 1 or 2 "good" songs is not a reason for you to get paid. Its a Greek ***** tragedy is what it is.
So again... feel free to download my band's music. Wideband Network. I am the copyright holder. Make a Youtube video. A twitter post advertising the links... because the music will speak for itself. And if people like it and support us... then we did what we set out to do. If no... it didn't cost you anything to download it :)
Cheers!

www.thewideband.net - Caegn, on 10/25/2009, -0/+1I'll probably get dug down, but someone's got to say it.
The problem here for me isn't file sharing or music sharing or whatever you want to call it. It's the fact that Google isn't an innocent company in all this. They're selling ads and trying to pocket all the money. If I'm and artist, I don't really care if people are sharing my work, but I would have a problem with a billion dollar corporation profiting off of it and keeping all the money. There's a big difference between sharing and profiteering.
It's the one reason I can't have sympathy for sites like the pirate bay. I like that they're there. And even use them occasionally. But I don't have some grand illusion that they're self-less heroes or anything. A torrent tracker is about 100kb. So it would take approximately 10,000 of them to equal a gigabyte. Which costs less than a dime in bandwidth if you've got a server the size the pirate-bay would need. Does anyone really believe they were only getting a dime in ad fees for every 10,000 downloads? I mean, really?
I'm not going to say that I hope all the torrent and video posting sites all get shut down. I kind of like having them around. But seriously, these aren't saints we're talking about here. And they're not doing it for your good, my good, or anyone's good but their own. - yourmanstan, on 10/24/2009, -2/+2google should have fought them from the beginning instead of caving. same with the google books project.
- Lu82, on 10/25/2009, -0/+0I dont expect any site, social network or torrent to save the world. I'm not that naive.
Moreover I personally have more simpathy for torrent-trackers sites which are trying to figure out new business models to develop an innovative source of profit. We all got to work an make a living but I refuse to spend 20 bucks (or euros) on a cd. For sure itunes is a good answer to all that but still I listen to more music that I could afford paying for =)
If sharing will be declared illegal, then even lending a cd to a friend will be something you may be persecuted for! Scary...
Advice: get the money out of companies' pockets, ours offer very little. Act smart! - Frogger4Truth, on 10/24/2009, -1/+0I think most of these links be spam
:( - Nephersir7, on 10/24/2009, -2/+1At least, thats what they do for GMail accounts info.. So i imagine thats a company-wide policy
- Nephersir7, on 10/24/2009, -4/+1Actually, Google would only comply to evil if the law forced them to, and it would not be without a fight...
- ugacrew, on 10/24/2009, -8/+3Oh and I'm adding the other requirement "nickleback sucks". NEXT
- Frogger4Truth, on 10/24/2009, -8/+0about darn time!
youtube has been encouraging copyright infringement for far to long. something needed to be done
I hope they get shut down.
