- electricwaffles, on 08/01/2008, -2/+47dugg for Neutral Milk Hotel
- santaliqueur, on 08/02/2008, -2/+25Buried for not including my favorite band you've never heard of
- HappyScrappy, on 08/02/2008, -0/+22This completely leaves out the entire electronic scene that happened during this time.
Closer by Joy Division came out in 1980, and then New Order released a slew of albums (all on independent Factory Records) that kick started a huge rush of British dance bands.
Hell, Kraftwerk's Computer World came out on independent Klingklang in 1981 and Electric Café in 1986. These more palatable Kraftwerk albums (along with the 70s Trans Europe Express and Man-Machine) were massively influential on hip hop music and later electronic music. - hierophantus, on 08/01/2008, -0/+21This is pretty skimpy and no real surprises among the picks, but dugg anyway in the hopes of having a Digg discussion about 80's-90's indie.
Personally, I can't accept a list that doesn't include at least one Fall album. And there isn't any post-rock on there at all. - geniusNOTatWORK, on 08/02/2008, -1/+20i can't speak for any 80's indie music and most of the 90's indie music but dugg for both Neutral Milk Hotel and Belle & Sebastian.
- jontalisman, on 08/01/2008, -0/+17Dugg for the Stone Roses.
- dwninjungleland, on 08/02/2008, -5/+19Can we not name every single obscure band that we happen to have heard of?
kthx.bye. - so1omon, on 08/02/2008, -2/+11Good list, even if some of the comments about the albums are off. Pavement led the lo-fi indie rock movement, huh? I seem to remember walking into a record store in '92 and having "Slanted and Enchanted" recommended to me because I liked Sebadoh. The Jesus and Mary Chain were never a shoegaze band. They were always more of a 60's, Phil Spector band with feedback. That Stone Roses album definitely isn't an "indie" record... Silvertone is part of Zomba.
Meh... I'm nitpicking, and I'm feeling old. Get off my damn lawn!! - GirSaysDoom13, on 08/02/2008, -0/+9Please tell me I'm not the only Pavement fan on digg?
Zurich is stained and it's not my fault! - ZephyrNinety, on 08/02/2008, -0/+9Was about to be pissed until I saw Fugazi on the list Dugg.
- otbeverly, on 08/02/2008, -0/+9Would have been nice to mention how some of those bands evolved. Uncle Tupelo's primary artists split up, Jeff Tweedy would eventually become the frontman (if you could even call him that) for another Indie band, Wilco, and Jay Farrar went on to a solo career and another band, Son Volt. The different directions the two have gone since Uncle Tupelo is really a remarkable transformation -- Wilco with more of a rock/folk/indy side and Farrar staying close to his alt-country roots.
- cnot3, on 08/02/2008, -0/+9Dugg for the pixies.
- helikopter, on 08/02/2008, -0/+8no post-rock? what would you call slint then?
- cadmiumpaint, on 08/02/2008, -1/+9yay for Pixies and Fugazi.
No Nirvana Bleach? Recorded for only a few hundred bux and led to great things.
i'd also vote for violent femmes - captZEEbo, on 08/02/2008, -2/+10I'd rather have a pencil shoved in my ear than hear your opinion on music
- Doorfingers, on 08/02/2008, -1/+9Dugg for the Smiths. Although I thought that The Queen Is Dead would've been the Smiths album if there was one.
- willigan, on 08/02/2008, -0/+7While they have put out some great records, Lonesome Crowded West is one of my fav albums, I wouldn't really call them that influential.
- Lutremi, on 08/02/2008, -1/+8I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIIIST
- 99daz, on 08/02/2008, -0/+7Dugg for Zen Arcade, Husker Du's best release!
- musicmaverick, on 08/01/2008, -0/+7i disagree. that is one of the best lists i've ever seen. there are already 10+ albums on there. anything more would be a catalogue, not a list.
- chadillak, on 08/02/2008, -1/+8it was all one guy (Jeff Mangum) and he basically disappeared from the grid after touring for Aeroplane. every track on that album is brilliant.
- mattyx, on 08/02/2008, -0/+7How do you type with all the tears?
- douglasnewman, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6Dugg for the Replacements and Uncle Tupelo!!!
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -2/+8I think its missing two albums--the Violent Femmes first disc, and some mid-career Dismemberment Plan.
- viggenguy, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6hey man, boys are dying on these streets
- inactive, on 08/02/2008, -2/+8No My Bloody Valentine love after 67 comments? I have to say though, I'm not sure they were that influential because I've never heard anyone come close to Loveless since.
- Gav0510, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6Just needs some of Meat Puppets - II, and Joy Division - Closer to be close to definitive.
- Wakkyweed, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6Dugg for the Pixies "Surfer Rosa". Most of the bands of the Nineties owe a debt of gratitude to the Pixies.
- NotOptium, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6I think Modest Mouse got some points taken off for their last 2 records. And maybe the fact that they sold their songs to (among others): Miller Genuine Draft (forgivable); Chrysler, for a minivan commercial (unforgivable); and Kids' Bop (Jesus, kill me now).
I still would have put Lonesome Crowded West on there though. - Brododium, on 08/02/2008, -2/+8It's down to preference, I like Wowee Zowee, but Slanted was their most _influential_ album.
- algaeturd, on 08/02/2008, -0/+5Beirut, for one. Decemberists to a degree (who use a lot of similar 'experimental' instruments) But I think influential in going in a new, creative direction, using the myriad instruments and stream of consciousness vocals and lyrics.
I think their impact is mostly felt by lyrics but there are bands out there that would have never included a an accordion or a saw or theremin, etc.
Sometimes influential doesn't mean that someone copied their sound, it just means bands were inspired to try something different than what's going on via radio. - ThinkRad, on 08/02/2008, -1/+6Dugg for showing Black Flag some love. They get forgotten about all too often.
- BootsyGraham, on 08/02/2008, -0/+5It's about being on an independent record label. Fugazi is still independent. Sonic Youth was independent until they signed with Geffen and put out Goo in 1990. You could argue that Sonic Youth is independent from the main stream but that's not what this article talking about. Being indie has nothing to do with how many people that you've influenced. This article is just talking about what albums they feel most influenced modern music.
Soundgarden was independent until after their first two albums. Pearl Jam has always been on a major label. I think that Mother Love Bone was on an independent record label. The Screaming Trees got on a major label when they released Sweet Oblivion. Queens of the Stone Age were independent until after their first album. Alice In Chains have always been on a major label. Almost all of those popular bands from Seattle in the late 80's and early 90's released one or two albums on independent record labels and then switched after Sonic Youth was picked up by Geffen.
There's this amazing book called "Our Band Could Be Your Life" by Michael Azerrad. You should read it. It was ***** interesting as hell and I learned a ton from it. It talks about all of the great independent record labels like SST, Dischord, Sub Pop, and Touch & Go Records.
Morrissey might be pompous but the Smiths ***** rule. I'm still going to digg this for the fact that you're a Screaming Trees fan. Mark Lanegan is ***** amazing.
This is a great list but it's small as *****. But Daydream Nation, Double Nickels, and Slanted and Enchanted which make the list awesome. - neilius, on 08/02/2008, -0/+5Both released on majors. And if you're picking a Built to Spill record, you should go for There's Nothing Wrong With Love
- mizike, on 08/02/2008, -1/+5I Agree. Before slint there was no post-rock.
- positron, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4Slint = Math Rock
REM = Folk Rock
MBV = Shoegaze, Dreampop
Husker Du, Minutemen = Post Hardcore
Not hard to categorize any of them. While they certainly each have their own sounds, they all fall well within the trends of the scenes they grew out of. - variablek, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4Yeah, the Fall would have been nice on there. I love Pavement to death, but there would be no Slanted and Enchanted without Hex Enduction Hour.
- mizike, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4That was actually a pretty good list, I might have added Screamadelica but definitely dugg for remembering Belle & Sebastian; I was genuinely surprised to see "if you're feeling sinister" on there....still an amazing album.
- NotOptium, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4Dugg for Tortoise, Modest Mouse, and PJ Harvey.
- pbone, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4loveless was on that list.
- inactive, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4"Indie" is the keyword.
- alchemist27, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4dugg for Fugazi
- eggsovereasy, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4yes!
I was listening to belle & sebastian when i sw this article so i dugg it - selfobsessed, on 08/02/2008, -2/+6Eh, missing Sunny Day Real Estate and Sleater-Kinney.
Still, it's always nice to see In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. - stillasleep00, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4Man, Double Nickels on the Dime... such a great album. I'd listen to anything on there all day.
- hid232, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4Dugg for The Smiths and Belle and Sebastian
- topato, on 08/02/2008, -1/+5Comment Abuse. Pitchfork has done the same thing, but substantially better.

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/3672 ... - algaeturd, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4I'd hope that as far as indie music goes that it's understood that Loveless is one of the best albums of all time and really kicked off the 'shoegazer' approach that so many other bands worked from. Notably Slowdive which is also a favorite from that era.
- supermajic, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4This is one of the more complete lists... I've seen much worse on Digg.
- smacksaw, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4Pretty decent list. He nails it by getting The Replacements and Husker Du as a duo, but he totally blows it by naming The Smiths and NOT Joy Division? Northerners are PISSED...LOL
Same with putting Mudhoney on the list but leaving out Mother Love Bone. Bone-headed.
Many of these artists were synergistic or part of a scene.
I would have added The Glove's Blue Sunshine.
ps- Mike Watt is a god. -
