- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Excellent news, but it would be nice if a major artist would go so far. This statement, however, resembles the same kind of sickening sell-out of one's fellow man that continually shows up in these discussions: "It would appear that their actions are actually clear violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)"
First of all, WRONG. They're handing out new discs, not cracking protection or selling the means to do so. And besides, what is the point in citing a corrupt, anti-citizen law that actually legislates rip-offs? Do NOT honor such laws and lend them legitimacy. The citizens of this country have defied unjust laws before. Are people simply too spineless to do it today? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"If they would support it with the the ongoing scandal, they would loose the respect of many of their fans."
Hardly. As Ashlee Simpson has proven - you can flat out fake your entire style and performance and voice and defraud your fans and they'll still come to your defense and worship you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1stokestack-
It's not against the DMCA, but it IS against the law, as BMG owns the music. Most likely. - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buying theier CD isn't going to get them much more money. It'll give Sony a LOT more money which they'll use to sue the damn band. If you want to support them, go see them in concert. That's where the artists make their money.
- buckweat420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This came fron ZDNET (http://blogs.zdnet.com/Spyware/index.php?p=726)
Afterdawn is much cleaner tho..lol
I think this is awsome!! Just gose to show that its really not the artists who are doing this *****. Its the record company - badogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If you want to support them, go see them in concert. That's where the artists make their money."
That and the merchandise of t-shirts and such. I think artists should embrace the internet and give their music away for free on line, book their own shows, and make all of the money without the record companies. That would really be the best solution. Would eliminate the whole copyright BS altogether. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wake me up with an artist with some clout and something to lose that people care about does something like this.
- buckweat420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its pretty bad that any record company has to stoop so low to put viruses and ***** that u dont want on your computer in the first place. Lets think, How much money do u think it cost sony to develope the root kit, and how much more is it going to cost them since they pissed off the fans who actually bought the cd?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Artist don't really have the choice, they have to take a stand against DRM. If they would support it with the the ongoing scandal, they would loose the respect of many of their fans.
- buckweat420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dident know it was allready submitted i looked...sorry :
- irateVpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It Still Moves wasn't recorded under Sony. And for clarification, it also wasn't their first album. But its kick ass nonetheless.
- badogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All the artists want is to keep making their money. Screw the labels, screw the fans, whatever as long as they keep the money coming in. Puppets..
Everyone needs to read the lyrics to Tool's song "Hooker With a Penis". Oh wait, we can't do that any more either. ;) Heck, just listen to it, great band, great song, great lyrics. - pirilampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My respect goes out to My Morning Jacket.
- electronicmaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know Switchfoot complained about it too...
- irateVpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everybody go out and buy My Morning Jackets untainted first album "It Still Moves". Not only is it a phenomenal album, they are going to need the cash when Sony drops and sues them. Much respect to that band.
- thetruth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But when will artists take a stand against copyrights? They're the real problem.
- nnonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any publicity is good publicity. Any band that says they don't like it but does nothing about it is just reaping publicity. As for the other band (whoever the hell they aren't) ... they have nothing to loose. You'll all go listen to their music now .... and that's good for them.
I would also like to personally thank all of the 'music thieving bastards' out there that really created this problem for the rest of us. Yeah ... like you really expected any corporation to stand still and let you steal their product. - randal2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can't stand this..... If the musicians cared they would be fighting RIAA, there fighting SONY because they lost money on the DRM deal. However, RIAA's lawsuits make them money. they do not care about the fans, it's money.
wake up, Madonna, MMJ and all the other bands out there, do not care about you. They care about your dollars. get it? now boycott music, totally.. or your part of the problem. -end rant- - Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Musicians aren't cowards. Music cartels have been their only path to public exposure for many years. That domination is now ended, but most artists are, well, artists, and they don't know that sort of thing.
I with you on buying high-quality downloads. I'd do it in a snap. Apple Lossless, or flac, bang, I'm there.
As long as there's no copy protection. - simon32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's about time more artists take a stand. I like my mac. :)
- buckweat420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony BMG=bad...anyone agree?
- smegball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just love how the link brings you to an article about artists against DRM, but still includes a sponsored link advertisement to a DRM service company...
- 4answer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** Sony
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To tell the Truth if at all any of the artists talk to any of their fans they would quickly relate to how this cripples their music and should know that this will be a continued threat to the sale of their product.
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I with you on buying high-quality downloads. I'd do it in a snap. Apple Lossless, or flac, bang, I'm there. As long as there's no copy protection."
Amen. The record companies are simply too stupid to see this, and consumers are too ignorant to know (or don't care) that they're only getting 20 percent of the music they're paying for. - duestown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One band that's getting a lot of buzz is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. They were just on Conan last night.
They don't have a label. They've been selling 10000+ CDs off their website by themselves. They get it.
Go them. And go MMJ... their last album "It Still Moves" was their major label debut but it is amazingly good. "Z" is their fourth album. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0my quote got messed up - sry
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0As Ashlee Simpson has proven - you can flat out fake your entire style and performance and voice and defraud your fans and they'll still come to your defense and worship you."
