- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> This is definitely fraud. It is illegal for a lawyer to abandon a client because they run out of money.
You haven't lived in America, have you? If you have, you certainly have never needed the services of a lawyer.
Boilerplate for every legal representation contract requires that submit to as many billable hours that the lawyer deems necessary. Your choices are:
1 - Settle / Plea Bargain out
2 - go to jail / lose the civil suit and be poor for the REST OF YOUR LIFE.
3 - case dismissed on a technicality and be recharged (read: be poor for the REST OF YOUR LIFE)
4 - Jury rules in your favor (get fscked with by the system for the rest of your life).
The American Judicial Industrial complex is complete bastard; quality legal representation is only available for folks making more than 6 figures. - eean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's the actually URL:

digg.com needs some way to fix stories :/ - IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ip-only link stinks to high heaven.
- Killaken187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked the iPod ad at the bottom of this story... priceless
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Um...does anyone else get the smell of fraud on that link? Seems fishy.
- CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1MMM FISH
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This guy clearly doesn't understand the issues, as is evidenced by this comment: "With file sharing, the operative word is "share": no money changes hands."
This isn't the point. The point is that nobody is ENTITLED to SHARE something that doesn't BELONG to them. Period. Sharing of copyrighted material (the manner which digital media is shared) is NOT fair use. Either you buy it, or you simply do without it.
I do not in any support the RIAAs tactics, but I sure wish people would drop this entitlement mentality when it comes to music. - filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0settle with a payment plan. You will pay that much to the attorneys involved.
Hoo Hoo, I invented the RIAA, tellem fred
happy birthday little jimmy - delt0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IP number and no URL? .... Its dam fishy. Phishy? No digg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's depressing.. another one
- darkmagus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0something something represent yourself something something fool for a lawyer. ;p
- dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's the death cries of a dying business model. They are creating a mentality of us against them. The only thing is they need us to survive, but we don't need them.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is definitely fraud. It is illegal for a lawyer to abandon a client because they run out of money. If this were actually happening to her, which I doubt, she would need only go to the clerk and say what is happening. That lawyer would find himself in front of the judge so fast his head would spin.
Definitely do not be had by giving your money away here. - althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Besides this site seeming very fishy. Lets look at it this way... The RIAA doesn't seem to hesitate about going after moms and college students but they won't touch the mass production pirating going on over seas. Regardless of the semantics of laws here, what does anyone have to say about that fact.
- RomeyRome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IP resolves to mp3newswire.net
- eean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would suspect phish, but that article doesn't even link to where to give money AFAICT.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ive been working on a website in the past week for things like this... no random lawsuit donations or crap like that though. endthegreed.com
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ah802 wrote: Wonder how libraries handle this... why is there vcr's and cassette recorders... perhaps throwing signals around the air helter skelter
I acknowledge the existence of libraries, but I do not see how this just justifies the entitlement that people feel when it comes to distributing copyrighted material that they have no right to distribute. - ah802, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>The point is that nobody is ENTITLED to SHARE something that doesn't BELONG to them. Period.
Wonder how libraries handle this... why is there vcr's and cassette recorders... perhaps throwing signals around the air helter skelter, and killing brain cells give me the right to jail a few of those signals on hard storage for later litigation? Back to my tin hat. - yikiad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually panique, this is a civil suit, not criminal. no money? no lawyer.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually yikiad, my friend who is a litigator for a long time has told me when he was representing defendants he could not walk away. to do so would open him to actions from his local bar.
what you say is true from a plaintiff's perspective. - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good to raise money for her, but that particular page has some really faulty arguments at the bottom aimed at the mainstream media.
No one should really be arguing about the legalities of it, but rather the flaws in both how they decide who is guilty (IP addresses) and the actual penalties the **AA wants vs. the real damages inflicted. - mad1stl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it illegal for someone to snoop into your computer.. possibly using resources/infecting it..download information i.e. playlist.. and then try to extort money from this knowledge? Just wondering.
- piggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Exactly. If this were legit, i'm sure the EFF would be all over this. http://www.eff.org/
- jrgomez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is not she going to the EFF?
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look. . .The music industry with it's RIAA ham-fisted goons see this purely as a financial issue and NOT an issue of principle. If they did, you would have seen this "crack down" years ago with air play and cassette recording of LP's.
The fact that it's so easy is what brings the crap law firms out of the closet to chase and shakedown moms for their 12 year old's downloads. - cymrich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes people do understand supply and demand... but when supply is ENDLESS then it really doesn;t apply now does it. People know that to get an xbox 360 (something that is available in limited numbers) that they will likely end up paying more than if they wait till the demand is less... But it isn't like they can only have 10,000 MP3 copies of a song.
On another note, the article DOES seem fishy, but not for the reasons mentioned. Patty Santangello is the right name for the woman, I've been following her story for many months. I even wrote a e-mail to her lawyer suggesting that she set up a donation page so that people like me who want to see the RIAA get shot down for their draconic tactics can donate to the cause. What seems fishy to me is why she is going to be representing herself? Why is she not keeping her lawyer? The firm that was representing her seemed VERY eager to complete this case. and also, if she isn't going to have professional representation... why would the costs be so much that she needs donations? Our "justice" system really disgusts me most of the time, but maybe someone can answer some of these questions that knows a bit about the legal system? - Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0smell money scandal i do
- 9mmCensor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Script for paypal? Wtf?
- arcanelinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm... Thats why i cover my tracks. Not everyone can afford to pay for their music. Hell I remember when I used to have to record off the radio cause I was so poor. I bet if they found out I was doing that I would be sued too. But the site looks phishie so who cares. If you p2p use proxies, or start up a private ftp (
- skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2***** the RIAA.
- deesnutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The RIAA still exists? I thought people got wise to start recording their own music off the radio for personal use. And not buy CD's from bands that use these RIAA monkeys. It's just a matter of time, I guess then. And it is us against them. And they will lose in the end. Spread the word and boycott these *****. Remember, buying CD's is old school. The radio waves will set us free (at least until they find a way to make that illegal too).
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0anyone think the guy on this blog is a little old to be taking stupid looking self portraits
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I have donated a few bucks to people who were screwed by the RIAA in the past, but based on this woman's story, I would not. It's unfortunate that this ***** was the one that actually stood up to the RIAA. :/
- Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I'm glad she's broke. Maybe she'll think twice next time she really wants that song she could have bought online for $1. I hope they throw all these pirates in PRISON FOR LIFE and chop off their wieners with TINY LITTLE GUILLOTINES
