- chucali, on 11/12/2007, -3/+31Thanks Moby
- Slick50, on 11/14/2007, -3/+27Very cool of someone like this to do something that supports the little guys as it does. His music is great for films too.
- vann, on 11/12/2007, -0/+20This is a great strategy. Charge the people you can, give away to the people you can't. This offers the best of both worlds: profits and exposure.
- Afronautica, on 11/12/2007, -2/+12Although I dugg this because I like the concept, the heading is incorrect. It's only free until your film is succesful!
If your student/indie film gets distribution, you need to pay a licencing fee - that being said, all the money from the fees is going to charity, so Moby isn't making anything from this.
Very different! (still cool none the less) - slightlyoffbeat, on 11/12/2007, -3/+13Filmmakers...that's who. This is a great new resource for us, and a step in the right direction for music.
btw, you sound like a pessimistic jerk....just saying. - mattcoady, on 11/12/2007, -0/+10This is actually great news for people like me. I've got a couple short films that I can't do anything with but show to friends and family, due to copyright issues. Even if you recut it with royalty free music, it loses the original feel you were aiming for. Although moby may not be the best choice, it's this kind've forward thinking that we need more of. I'm just worried that we'll see these 40 or so tracks showing up in everything now, like garage band loops.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+10This is really cool and moby is a genius, but this is not new. He's been doing this for a while now.
- koweja, on 11/12/2007, -0/+9Actually, anyone who says something worthless like "X sucks" gets dugg down, regardless of the topic.
- MasterPlayer, on 11/10/2007, -0/+8The last scene of Bourne Ultimatum was awesome just because of his song Extreme Ways.
- Dokument, on 11/13/2007, -1/+8(moby dick joke)..err, nevermind, ill just go back to cutting myself in the corner
- MikeMania, on 11/10/2007, -0/+6This is cool, I liked his song in the Bourne Ultimatum.
- cambrown99, on 11/12/2007, -0/+6Let them put it in the film for free, then sell the soundtrack. Makes complete sense. But then, that's because the RIAA isn't involved in this decision.
- cambrown99, on 11/12/2007, -1/+7I never understood why Eminem decided to pick a fight with Moby of all people.
- slightlyoffbeat, on 11/13/2007, -2/+7he also has a song called "All Is Perfect"
- killkev, on 11/10/2007, -0/+5Another good place to check out is the Internet Archive, its overlooked and contains music created by independent artists. Music here is copyrighted under the Creative Commons License which in some instances allows other people to use the music freely.
http://www.archive.org/details/opensource_audio - inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+6George Bush sucks.
- DiamondIce, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4I prefer the original version of Extreme Ways. (It's the credits song for the first 2 Bourne movies.)
- Slick50, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4No, actually it helps us to silence the asshats.
- cambrown99, on 11/10/2007, -0/+4If a film's creator finds distribution for their work, or they are creating something for commercial purposes, they can apply for "an easy license, with any money that's generated being given to the humane society." Moby said, "I structured it so that it's impossible for me to make any money from it."
If only more artists were like that--heck if only more people were like that! - koweja, on 11/10/2007, -0/+3So? It's still free for the people who probably can't pay commercial licensing rates.
- NavS, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3Those lyrics make no sense at all...
- zcreem, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Firstly thanks to Moby for doing this, it is a big deal for us small guys.
Secondly I hope more people think this is a good idea and follow his lead.
As for the insulting comments it goes to show how many idiots are out there no matter what you try you can't win all the time.
Thanks again Moby. - koweja, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2We're talking about a guy who picked a fight with a hand puppet, after all.
- TheKappa, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2This is awesome! Thanks a bunch, Moby!
- chris9902, on 11/12/2007, -1/+3You didn't know who he was because you're the sort of retard who listens to Eminem.
- Jerky1312, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2This is good news, but he's going to be benefiting from this move as well. Not only does he get PR from this move, its also free publicity for his music. I'm surprised more artists and musicians don't take this route. Part of making music popular is getting people to hear it in the first place. Instead of having to pay radio stations money to play your songs or pay music tv stations to play your music videos, you have independent film makers use your music and have people listen to it for free.
- Eugenia, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Well, there are indie *hobby* artists that are not interested in commercial work but purely they do it out of hobby and when that's the case, the last thing they want is actually pay people to write music or to hold the boom mic. They simply use free music. And Moby's step is about these kind of people. People like me, whose videography is a hobby and nothing more.
Your problem should not be that Moby gives away music, but the fact that video is now a COMMODITY and so everyone can get a Canon HV20 and start shooting good stuff -- with a bit of talent. *That's* what puts the strain to indies, not free music or free videos. But you know, times change. Just like people say that the major labels should go with the times, so should the non-hobby professional indies. - EmileVictor, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1Loose as a goose
- HastyBoom, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1So? It's still free advertising for him.
I don't get it. He is the only one who will benefit from this. - drcru, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1yes it was. this is really old news but cool none the less
- brenden67, on 11/12/2007, -1/+2What the hell has Moby done to you personally? Hate is pretty strong. If you don't like his music, so be it. Don't listen to it. Ignore anything relating to it. To each his own. I bet you like Death metal or some other hard music.
- esquire360, on 11/10/2007, -0/+1and moby make the best "independent" choice: in music... let movies sell your music... boy genius

- Lindane, on 11/14/2007, -1/+1Moby is very generous, but I give away my music free to everyone, independent or big expensive productions alike.
- Dotcommer, on 11/12/2007, -4/+4Fail.
- dcmusicfusion, on 11/14/2007, -1/+1For all you tech geeks out there....the Wired blog has coverage too!
http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2007/11/moby-offer ... - slightlyoffbeat, on 11/14/2007, -1/+1that's generous of you...but I'm guessing its not your primary source of income then.
Musicians gotta pay the bills. - brenden67, on 11/10/2007, -2/+2And you are???? Are you a reputable music reviewer? Have you been published for your musical expertise? What are your credentials to make such a claim? What music do you like? I am sure there are people out there who hate what you like as much as you hate Moby. Go get a life. Your username says it all. You are a hateful person.
- def1234, on 11/12/2007, -2/+1quick. somebody's expressing their opinion. digg them down.
- jrandyw, on 11/14/2007, -2/+1Wasn't this announced in May?
- mparker7410, on 11/14/2007, -3/+2Oh wow! Its not like he hasn't already made MILLIONS licensing all those damn songs from the Play album. lol
- KingBunny, on 11/10/2007, -2/+1It just says "independent, non-profit film, video, or short." ... it doesn't say anything about "distribution" in the paragraph on his site. The website here implies that simply putting it ONLINE = you need to pay a fee. Maybe Moby's site just isn't worded well... because that paragraph, to me, says that if it's independent and non-profit, than you don't need a license.. >_>
There's not even a link to "legal version of agreement" or something. - Eugenia, on 11/14/2007, -4/+3I just sent their lawyer an email asking some questions:
"My videos are then uploaded to Youtube and Vimeo.com (Vimeo is like youtube, but allows for HD video). I don't charge for these 2-3 minute videos, and I make sure that they are of good quality and as professional-looking as possible.
So, my questions are:
1. Am I allowed to post my work with your music on youtube and other video sharing web sites if I don't charge for these videos? You see, while I don't charge money for people to see my videos, youtube is a commercial venue that uses ads, so it is not clear if this is allowed by your terms and conditions.
2. My videos are published under the Creative Commons "BY" 3.0 license which only asks for attribution if reused by other film makers. However, I always make it clear that the audio part of my videos is SEPARATELY licensed (and I include this disclaimer in my credits, even if the audio might be under the same license as my video). My question is, how cool is that with you, the fact that the video part is licensed under a very liberal license (I still own the copyright btw)." - BESToftheNEXT, on 11/14/2007, -1/+0This new trend of giving away music or selling it under 'pay as you wish' (Radiohead) is interesting. Don't know how fruitful it is for the artists, but I like the idea of the musician's reclamation in this whole digital music fiasco in the last number of years.
For anyone in New York, I heard that Moby is starting up a new party at the Hiro Ballroom on Thursdays. It's called Degenerates and he's very involved in the music apparently, even previewing music from his next album... Cool guy.
