- Mabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7He should form a band with Pete Best.
- bamapachyderm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow...those were by far the best years of the Stones (w/Taylor). How the mighty have fallen. :sigh:
- Spiffness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Man, sometimes your wrong, and sometimes your millions upon millions of dolloars/pounds wrong.
- Aquinas315, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At least he won't gather any moss.
- rickfle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you can find it, listen to Taylor on the John Mayall album "Diary of A Band." If you're a guitarist, prepare to be amazed and humbled. Taylor was 18 when that album was made.
- bclark303, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Actually, once a stone stops rolling, it's perfectly capable of gathering moss.
- SupaFupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to the Rolling Stones biography I read, Old Gods Almost Dead, Mick Taylor didnt get along with Keith, who would erase Taylor's recordings at the end of a session, among other things. It also says that he was screwed out of royalties on more than just Its Only Rock and Roll. Mick Taylor contributed to all the albums he played on.
Now dont get me wrong, Keith Richards is one of the biggest ***** alive, but I think alot of his, and the rest of the Stones greed stems from being ***** over for the first 10 years of their career. - benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2mick taylor was a genius with the stones, but if you've ever heard his recordings with John Mayall (from before and after his 5 year RS stint), they are equally phenomenal.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i dont think taylor would accept it. the only way jagger could give money to him would seem as an act done out of pity. the man respects himself.
- rhnaccounts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2By far the best Stones guitarist. Go download some live Stones during the period, especially 1973, and you'll be blown away. He took their songs to a different level, and Ron Wood couldn't hold a candle too him.
Sadly, Taylor has suffered the same fate as many other rock'n'roll band members - 'screwed' out of royalties by the band leaders (see, e.g. Levon Helm, et al). It is sad to see great musicians not get the financial rewards they deserve, but it is called the music -business-. On the other hand, there are scores of people that would live a low/middle class lifestyle like Taylor has now just to have one sliver of the talent he has. - Mabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not everyone thinks that fame and money are keys to happiness.
- hoppdawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, you can't always get what you want/
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey may have fallen far in terms of fame and money, but perhaps he found something the $tones don't have? I sure hope so.
- mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't be too hard on Ozzy. I'm sure it wasn't his decision. I don't think Ozzy takes a piss without Sharon's okay anymore.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Many "great" bands and band leaders screw their band members out of recognition or money that's rightfully theirs. Another classic example is the alcoholic Ozzy Osbourne and his greedy bitch wife Sharon.
Remember the classic albums “Blizzard of Oz” and “Diary of a Madman”? Two amazing musicians, Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake played on them. They were denied recognition, credits and royalties. When they filed suite, Ozzy instead of acknowledging them, fired back and reissued the albums with their original drum and bass tracks replaced by tracks from Osbourne’s current band members, effectively axing everything those albums stood for. So now there's two versions of these albums floating around, and anything you pick up in a store today will be the new "remastered" i.e., messed up version.
Greed can bring a great and respected person down, it's happened time and again, and will continue long after you're dead. - dave1021, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have nothing against Mick Taylor - in fact, I saw him play with the Bluesbreakers after he left the Rolling Stones - but to say that he "played a key part in (the Stones') success" is a bit of a stretch.
Having said that, I would think that the decision on songwriting credit recently handed down in London in the Procul Harum "Whiter Shade of Pale" case should inspire Mick to contact a lawyer... - capandjudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In a musical sense, he was actually too good a guitarist for the Rolling Stones. Check out "Sway" off of Sticky Fingers.
- quotato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This all makes me think of the late-great composer-guitarist Brian Jones. He was the only real hippy in the Stones. His death, along with his close friend Jimi Hendrix, took the color out of Rock forever....
- marinist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Mabu:
Exactly, but it's never just about money; there's the self-fulfillment aspect as well.
Hence my comment that I hope he's found something that really matters, over simply surviving. - ssmith2k3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Taylor is an amazing guitarist with a unbelievably smooth and flowing style. I've been trying to learn all his solos note for note on the guitar. I personally like his playing far better than Clapton's but I'll admit Clapton was the first English guitar hero and so everyone that followed was standing on the shoulders of a giant.
- funkspiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He appears in Gimme Shelter during his first American tour with Stones, that is how I remember him.
- yikiad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1congratulations spam whore, you've been blocked
- gbv23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Although I doubt he misses the Stones lifestyle, it would be nice if he could have perhaps a little easier time of it as he enters his sunset years.
At least he's still kicking and has not drank himself to death.
Plus that bit about the 30-ish Swedish girlfriend who visits once-a-month sounds pretty good.
I've got his 1st solo album (the one with leather jacket and others) and always enjoyed his playing. - RocksOFF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's too bad they (the stones), weren't allowed to release a live album during Taylor's era (except Ya-Ya's). Oh well that's the good thing about bootlegs I guess!
- redballooon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0retire or rock on? taylor leaving was a pretty big blow, but i guess they recovered...? maybe he really is better off - who are we to judge? personally, i'd rather grow old and fat out of the public eye, wouldn't you?
http://www.culturecloud.com/Articles/00001747/Retire_or_Rock_On.aspx - 1dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When he left the Stones they were basically done. Woods era never produced much of anything.
You would think the Stones would show a little charity for one of there own. How pissy they got when Bill Wyman left. - richstyles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1mutual self destruction.
How many more years are the members of the Stones gonna live? Like a million $$$ a piece to Mick would kill them. - bluntarski, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Its amazing to me why the stones are still popular. They haven't had a decent album in over 20 years. C'mon people, support some new music from groups that aren't billionaires.
