- redwolfwalker, on 04/05/2009, -0/+25...continued .. fta:.."Despite their commercial success, few norteño or banda artists, with their cowboy hats, horses, accordions and tubas, typically end up with the kind of major marketing and advertising deals that go to artists like Shakira or Enrique Iglesias, who embrace a more cross-cultural look and sound."
- yeeaauuh, on 04/05/2009, -4/+17"La Cucaracha" should definitely be pre-loaded into every cell phone.
- Stevanoski, on 04/05/2009, -1/+12I let my workers pick the station they listen to while working in the warehouse. Got to where I enjoy the music but waaaaaaaaaaay to many commercials.
- StriderNemesis, on 04/06/2009, -1/+10As much as you sound as a hateful teen, I agree with you. This type of music is one of the few things I hate with passion. The lyrics are usually retrograde and full of crap; they usually teach kids things related to narcoculture, 20s-worthy disrespect for women, and other ancient anti-values. As a Mexican, I'm sorry to say this, but this type of music only appeals to the non-educated, which is a great amount of people in this country, and the vast majority of Mexican immigrants in the US, hence its popularity.
- AquaOSX, on 04/06/2009, -1/+9"La Cumbia del Río," the song from the article:

I've lived in CA my whole life, and this is one part of Mexican culture I don't think I'll ever understand. - mushoo, on 04/06/2009, -2/+9No need to excuse yourself dude. All these bands are the same, they sound the same, and do exactly the same thing over and over again, and the sheeple just eat it up.
Same thing goes for salsa, merengue, cumbia, etc.
What really pissed me off is when they get bored of rehashing the same song over and over again, pretty much like creed does, and decide to butcher old hits from dead people who actually had talent. - EllimistX, on 04/06/2009, -0/+6I don't think you can compare some of the ***** music like Cumbia Del Rio or narcocorridos with actual norteño music like Intocable.
- alcoholio, on 04/06/2009, -7/+13I hate this ***** kind of music, it's always embraced with drugs, traffic, mafia, crime and so on, even if there is nothing in the lyrics. Also the music is every time more retrograd and nosense, ***** void. Yes I'm mexican but this doesn't mean that I must worship this culture when it's so twisted and doesn't evolve in anything. Excuse me but I can't stand it.
- Pirate45, on 04/06/2009, -1/+4Yeah that's some...interesting music.
- Dinsdale77, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3I have Homer singing Spanish Flea on my cell.
- Pirate45, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2My favorite latin band is a punk group called The Plugz....too bad they're from the early 80's.
- booststrong, on 04/07/2009, -0/+2That a good example of how to think outside the box and create a diferent strategy comunicating
music, going down the alternative road of viral... - texnite, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3One things for sure, these guys have confidence. You gotta have it if you're going to ride around in a canopy covered hoopty with a tuba player in the back.
- AbeX, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2The thing is that song was mainstream mostly in the states. It started a a parody of the Pikadiente (typical person without a job, bum, lazy, or the like) as depicted by the stereotypes in the city of Caborca Sonora.
Song composed in a bar for a bar (Obviously).
This was the newest hit on cellphones when I went to Mexico last December:

There is usually one or two "Disposable" songs each year with the sole purpose of having simple "Party mode" lyrics each year.
Examples (Not all necessarily from Mexico or regional style)
El Gato Volador:

Try googling "worst band in the world"
Did you mean Creed? - LilJimmyNordin, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3I learned more about Mexican music watching "From Dusk Til' Dawn" and listening to Ace's Mexican Ranchero Accordion Countdown than I ever did from my cellphone.

- mingusmingus, on 04/06/2009, -1/+2I like how someone, either you or the reader, is assuming that "workers" is code for mexicans.
also, i'm pretty sleepy mang. i think i might take a nap. - RonaldSays, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1One of the great benefits of new technology where everyone can have fast internet anywhere is that bands can get their music out there without signing some ***** record deal first and get screwed by the record company.
"I'm on a Mexican Radio"
Wall Of Voodoo - Mexican Radio - antonioguzman, on 04/06/2009, -0/+0Even though it is true what you are saying for the most part, there are cases in which local or regional recognition is more important for some of those bands. Take for example Los Bukis, which originally had Marco Antonio Solis in their lineup. They went low profile for the longest time and wanted to remain fairly underground. It wasn't until the song TU CARCEL was played in radio that the band could no longer remain semi anonymous anymore. And as a result Marco Antonio Solis became ultra famous and left the group for a soloist career and is now a super star in Mexico.
All of us who write and sing Ranchero or Regional music would love to have a bit of his recognition.
And although struggling for a piece of fame, we all love what we do. Here is a sample of my work

- Regulator980, on 04/06/2009, -3/+3Norteño or banda "music" really sounds like a really bad polka rip-off that somehow became really popular. Unless you grew up in the countryside of Mexico or you grew up listening to this, most hispanics I know really hate this music. It's awful and every single song sounds the same.
- super_spyder, on 04/06/2009, -4/+3As a southern Californian, Mexican music just makes me hungry. I don't need to under stand it, just enjoy it... and some fat burritos.
- TDDebug, on 04/06/2009, -3/+2How are the Peruvian flute bands holding out then?
- jshhmr, on 04/06/2009, -2/+1Are your workers legal?
- Rulex, on 04/06/2009, -2/+1Pochos (Mexican - Americans) love this *****, i guess that is why you are being digg down, but you are right on the dime, that awful thing called banda music is hated by most mexicans.
- Kamileno, on 04/06/2009, -2/+0I really enjoyed your songs. Can you tell me what the second song is about? I have limited knowledge of Spanish but I loved the polka sound.
- MasterGrief, on 04/06/2009, -3/+1Haha! That's wretched!
- spookyttws, on 04/06/2009, -3/+1The Mexican Hat Dance seems to be stupidly popular as a ring tone. But to be fair my data collection consists mostly of movie theater patrons, church goers, college classes, and other general venues where it's generally considered a sin to not have your cell phone on vibrate.

- antonioguzman, on 04/06/2009, -4/+0Hi My name is Antonio Guzman and I just released my first Spanish album. I am also trying to do the same as this band did with viral marketing and what a better place to do it than in digg.
