- webaddict, on 04/27/2008, -42/+736Screw these guys. What a bunch of a-holes. They have ripped on their fans and the Internet music adoption strategy that they should be banned or boycotted from doing business on the Internet. I really liked these guys in the 90's now I just wish they'd go down in flames and get over themselves and their outdated music.

- Juice7, on 04/27/2008, -24/+10Outdated? The albums Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All are timeless, but they have fallen off since then. I, like everyone else on this site, strongly disagree with their anti-piracy actions. But all too many times, regular, everyday people forget that superstars like these guys are also human beings and the fact that they make some bad decisions does not mean that they are pieces of *****. Their mistake was that they genuinely thought that they were being stolen from. Their actions were the same as the ones anyone else would take if they felt they had been robbed. All the same, they've made some amazing music.
- XombieRobot, on 04/27/2008, -3/+2Herah Herah! Heeeeyyyyaaaah hurah hurah herahhhh!!! Yeaaaahhh!
- aboyd, on 04/27/2008, -1/+14To be fair to all the ex-fans, though, when "normal" human beings make bad decisions, they back away from those decisions quickly and apologize. Lars not only did NOT back away, he went on a rampage, ranting and raving repeatedly about how every person on the Internet was a thief. When people objected -- even when Metallica was loudly booed by ex-fans at their MTV appearance -- Lars just dug in his heels and got even more angry at everyone. To me, that does not make them "regular everyday people" or just "human beings who made bad decisions." Instead, they seem like hostile, rude, and arrogant people. They come off as if they have a sense of entitlement, which is truly snob rockstar behavior. Even now, there's no apology or admission they were wrong. It's just, "Oh we're going to use the Internet now. La la la." As if we won't remember their history with the Internet!

- jaydoj, on 04/27/2008, -2/+12Actually hypocrites is EXACTLY what they're being, maybe you remember their loud mouthed asshole drummer Lars being outspoken, and a giant smartass to boot about how horrible Napster was? Now they're all about the internet and it's 'possibilites' for getting their half-assed attempt at music out. I saw 'Some Kind of Monster', what a bunch of whiny pussies, nothing, absolutely nothing, ***** me off more than, some band who is still riding the wave of what they accomplished back in the 80's or 90's, oooooh I get it, we are Metallica, we are still the essence of metal, and all that it stands for.....puuuuuhlease, the guys in Metallica are a bunch of asshole douchebags who happen to think that now, because they use the internet to get their music out that people will enjoy it....well let me give you guys a few professional points of criticism. One, don't write songs about recovering from alcoholism, because most of your fan base is used to 'Alcoholica', and not what you guys are now....and Two, a technical point, if you decide to make your record sound edgy by making a snare sound like a bat hitting a oil drum like on that piece of ***** you call a record, I'm going to crack some ***** skulls...
/rant - stretch611, on 04/27/2008, -1/+9Actually, back in the days when Metallica was new, they used to encourage their fans to make concert bootlegs and pass them on to others. So, yes they are hypocrites.

- pintomp3, on 04/27/2008, -2/+37it's ironic that these guys became so against file sharing. people making copies of their tapes and spreading it was what put them on the map. they weren't getting radio play, the enthusiasms of their fans made them the what they are.
- OwlFlavored, on 04/27/2008, -20/+11I know this will be dugg down, but I have to say it...
It's easy to look at millionaires like Metallica and call them greedy for fighting something that gives absolutely no revenue to artists, but I don't understand why people don't realize that they were also standing up for the rights of lesser known artists. Sure, artists like NIN and Radiohead who already have a huge following through MTV, major labels and radio can now be completely independent, but the amount of artists making a profit off of their music has sharply declined due to customers being less willing to pay. I'm not saying that there aren't new business models that could work, and I'm not bashing file-sharing and it's potential, but at the time when artists really didn't know anything about it and saw it as the industry going down in flames, how is it greedy to stand up for yourself and everyone else effected who doesn't get a voice in the matter?- emblemparade, on 04/27/2008, -8/+4And how is not hypocritical to change your mind according to popularity?
If they'd stick to fighting for the rights of the underdog, as you say (and I'm giving you a LOT of interpretive space here), then I'd respect them at least for standing their own. But if they're going to go the way of Radiohead and NIN, just because it works... well... will suck for them to have to look at themselves at the mirror every day.- OwlFlavored, on 04/27/2008, -5/+2The reason is, the internet has become MUCH more integrated into society in the last few years, especially in music. Between the iTunes store, which was unheard of at the time, MP3 playing phones and iPods becoming mainstream (I know there were MP3 players back in the day, but it was much more rare), MySpace being used to promote bands, growth of internet radio, a real decline in record store sales and of course the NIN/Radiohead business model, the industry has changed. What looked like armageddon for artists years ago is now a slightly less apocalyptic reality now, and Metallica is adapting to a changing business.
By your reasoning, if we didn't believe in global warming years ago, then even when presented with new information, we'd be hypocrites for believing in it now.

- bexamous, on 04/27/2008, -3/+7"but I don't understand why people don't realize that they were also standing up for the rights of lesser known artists"
LOL Yea that is surely what they were doing. It is hard to take any of your argument seriously when you throw in lines like that--- just a fyi. Metallica saw napster as a problem, as did rest of the music industry, but Metallica set themselves apart with suing fans-- simple as that. They made it very clear on what they cared about the most and it wasn't music or fans.
Now they come back with this as they're trying to provide music straight to their fans... read NIN's blog and he seems to have same reasoning... or RadioHead I guess, I don't pay much attention... and while all three might appear the same they are in fact not.
NIN and Radiohead still have fans respect.
Metallica does not. Nor do they deserve it. - roodammy44, on 04/27/2008, -0/+8Stand up for your music.... By suing your customers?
Even a retard would admit that's a stupid way to go about things- zetsurin, on 04/27/2008, -7/+2Firstly, I hare Metallica, always have so I don't give a damn but always these articles attracts all the pompous fools looking for excuses to justify their piracy urge.
"Stand up for your music.... By suing your customers?"
You fail. How is someone a CUSTOMER if they aren't paying for the product they are taking? I guess you were at home sick with the measles when they had Business 101 on weren't you? - MtheoryX, on 04/27/2008, -1/+4zetsurin: You're assuming that the defendant never purchased any other albums beforehand.
- zetsurin, on 04/27/2008, -7/+2Firstly, I hare Metallica, always have so I don't give a damn but always these articles attracts all the pompous fools looking for excuses to justify their piracy urge.
- greydonkey, on 04/27/2008, -0/+5If it wasn't for people copying Metallica's music, then they wouldn't have had any fans in the first place. That's how they got know from people spreading the music on copied cassette tapes. And this works for many, many other bands when they are un-known. It disgusts me that they then choose to ***** on the very fans that pay their wages and put them where they are.
I have bought every Metallica album and I still have my original pirated copies. So what does that make me? A fan or a scrounger?- jull1234, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1i'd say it makes you a fan.

The will and whim of the people, whatever it may be, is law! Metallica ***** 'us' over once and now, must pay for it. They opet out of their stake in the future of the internet as a music medium when they settled for cash from Napster suits. I lost all respect for metallica when they started suing their fanbase.
Cowards, Theives, money grubbing whores, and now Hypocrites.

- jedinate, on 04/27/2008, -3/+2I feel so ripped off. I've only been able to download 20 free ENTIRE CONCERTS from the Metallica vault over the last 3 years. What money grubbing a-holes to give away so much FREE music. That's sarcasm in case you missed it.
Seriously, everyone missed the point of the whole Napster thing, they didn't care so much about the song getting out free, they were mad that an unfinished demo was making the rounds as their "new single". Yes that song would eventually appear as a single, but not the version that was leaked and unfinished.
For me it was much to do about nothing as the MI song kinda sucked...- slinky317, on 04/27/2008, -2/+4No, they DID care that their songs were getting out free. Listening to them whine about it from around that time and especially watching Lars' commercial on the MTV awards made that clear. They are money-grubbing whores.

Metallica and all the other the other bands and people that Digg continues to complain about worked hard creating something that obviously has a lot of value to many people worldwide.Thankfully most of us live in a system that allows copyrights and such.
None of your ***** bitching and moaning is ever going to change any of it, so take your Neutral Milk Hotel, Radiohead, and Dragonforce downloads on a one-way trip to China. I'm sure you'll be much happier there since no one is allowed to....

- DesertDude, on 04/27/2008, -6/+4Metallica revolutionized metal. To call them "were always a lame bunch..." means this person hates the entire rock/metal genre. OK, so he likes Ashlee instead of Britney, big deal.
- keitarofujiwara, on 04/27/2008, -2/+5You assume too much. I'm not, and I never was, a fan of Britney Spears, Ashlee, 50 cent, Michael Jackson or Metallica. There is too much music in the world to be a fan of any certain type of music, let alone a certain band. I've heard (not "listened" mind you) them all and I never liked them. It's music dude! It's a matter of taste. I don't like Metallica and I've never liked it. To me they're a bunch of pussies. Period.

- zeabu, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1Mockery, not sarcasm. If I say I don't like Metallica (or 50cents, whatever) and he replies that Britney is FTW, he's implying that everying who doesn't like Metallica is a pussy listening to Britney. If that were not his intent, he should rephrase.

- ncnavguy, on 04/27/2008, -2/+36I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that metallica was an innovative band that changed the scene of thrash metal during the 80's and 90's. When Def Lepperd and Kiss where fagging out metallica was laying down some incredible albums, and most of the harcore/metal/ (even ***** nu-metal) has taken their cue from albums like Justice for all and Master of Puppets. Business practices aside discrediting the body of work by this band is a shame, if most contemperary music could accomplish what Metallica did maybe people wouldn't steal it but feel like buying it would be worthwhile.
- Sk8SkaNJ, on 04/27/2008, -5/+2I'd rather credit Slayer/Anthrax/Megadeth (or Dave's part in Metallica)
- oderdigg, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2ncnavguy is right though. Metallica was huge in the 80/90's because of their work, not because of who they were or what they did outside of playing music. I remember the Metallica vs Megadeth days... in the end, both great bands for the time. Once And Justice for all was released, they took a 6 year ***** break and came out with the black album which sucked! That's the also the time when Napster was started up and they blamed Napster for losing sales. That's what ***** me off about Metallica, they didn't know they sold out their fans by putting out lame *****. If they just shut the ***** up about Napster, their following would be almost as large today as it was back in their day.
***** I hate those guys now.

- Bulletbillx, on 04/27/2008, -1/+7Yeah. How does a band go from releasing awesome albums like Master of Puppets and Ride The Lightning to CRAP like St. Anger? The new stuff is terrible.

I'm glad to see that their stance is changing and they are realizing the power file sharing can have if done right
- parax, on 04/27/2008, -24/+8Only buried because you preemptively predicted it.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 04/27/2008, -15/+17Agree 100% with you. Yes, they were assholes about the internet but, then again, they were being stolen from. They have the right to be angry. They dealt with it the wrong way (it seems obvious now that Radiohead and Reznor dealt with it the right way) but there is still enough respect left for them from me to go ahead and buy their new album (after making sure it sounds absolutely nothing like St. Anger, obviously)
- Lyph5, on 04/27/2008, -7/+15They weren't being stolen from. They were having their copyright infringed upon. If I was stealing from them, that'd be a criminal action. File sharing is civil.
- WilliamDavis, on 04/27/2008, -1/+9The point being... Metallica, or Lars anyway, didn't understand the power of a network. Of all people, how could they not know that? They only hit a mainstream scene at all because friends were sharing their music with friends old school. Maybe now they've figured it out now, but they sure did try to villify a ton of people who were pretty much their friends. They were voluntary posterchildren for the villification, even.
- victordelprete, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2It's both criminal and civil: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/abstract/ipt02.htm
They clearly were being stolen from. "Intellectual property."- Lyph5, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2IP is ***** and EVERYONE knows it. But if it's not, maybe they should start paying taxes on it just like any other property.
- greenvortex, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Seriously! If your intellectual property is so valuable, then pay property taxes to the government that protects that property for you. Really great musicians make money by playing live for lots of fans, not by selling the same 10 minutes of work for the rest of their lives.
- Lyph5, on 04/27/2008, -7/+15They weren't being stolen from. They were having their copyright infringed upon. If I was stealing from them, that'd be a criminal action. File sharing is civil.
- briguymaine, on 04/27/2008, -8/+6I found a file on bittorrent which claims to be the next album. If it is (and I realize it's a very BIG if) it is great, back to Garage Days/Master type sound. If that is it, I'm back on board. I will gladly buy a hard copy and download. I felt so burned by St. Anger...
- timmage89, on 04/27/2008, -1/+7link please?

- insinuate, on 04/27/2008, -1/+6I've seen a similar file on newsgroups and thought the same thing, but then saw in the MP3s file info it was really just some other band that built their sound on met's original sound. So I wouldnt jump to a conclusion yet.
- briguymaine, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2exactly what I thought/think but it REALLY sounds like Hetfield on vocals, I would think it's hard to fake that over the course of an entire album.
- timmage89, on 04/27/2008, -1/+7link please?
- ozid, on 04/27/2008, -16/+2St Anger was an alright album. Just not for Metallica.

- momsshizzle, on 04/27/2008, -25/+6If you were a true fan then you would have liked St. Anger. St. Anger is better than anything that was released in the '90s. This includes the black album. I can't stand the black album.
- briguymaine, on 04/27/2008, -2/+4you are on drugs. St. Anger was a miserable departure from any kind of song style they had developed over the years.
- kipmartin, on 04/27/2008, -12/+15sorry, im a real fan and i like all their albums--including the oddball 'st. anger'.
and we should embrace these guys becaus they will influence the industry. cut them a break. they arent pimply computer geeks--they make music for a living and are entitled to whine. if they were a ***** band, i wouldnt take their side, but musically they earned my respect back when everyone else was listening to Loverboy, Saga, and Boston on MTV.- CaptEnder, on 04/27/2008, -5/+13There is absolutely nothing wrong with Boston!
- Olfster, on 04/27/2008, -3/+11Then their music turned to crap and they still wanted money for it. Now they know it is crap and are thinking of giving away. I'm not biting.

- ShugNinx21, on 04/27/2008, -8/+3I'd just like to point out the fact that Metallica are professional musicians, they are a group that makes, sells, and preforms music for money. So, why would you be surprised that they want to make money by selling their music? And further more, why does them wanting to sell their music, like they have done since their first album and like all artists do, make them assholes?
- johnny23, on 04/27/2008, -3/+9No, what makes them assholes is when they were first starting out, they encouraged recording of their shows and trading of bootleg tapes. It was only after they "made it" that they decided to ***** their fan base and kill off file sharing. Sorry guys, can't have it both ways.
- duPlux, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1I don't think Metallica your discourage file sharing for start up bands that need the publicity.
- userperson, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2The Road to Hell...
They wanted "control" of their music. I'll even buy that it wasn't about money per se (yes, I know I'm wrong blah blah blah). How would you feel if people took your work and messed with it without your permission? This was bad.
BUT they hired a lawyer or their record co., someone and Lars got out front and did his thing ... WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
This was very wrong coming from Metallica.
Some of the people searching this stuff were diehard fans who would were searching to find the remix dance version of MI:2 or whatever. Fans who had, and would have spent tons of money on Metallica paraphernalia, and some who still did.
By being the post boy for anti-Napster, they helped to set digital music back a couple more years. This was worse than when they performed with an orchestra (cool idea, stupid execution). Their career hasn't been all that great since, both Napster and the orchestra.

- Kronos6948, on 04/27/2008, -1/+11You forget that they used to have bootleg sections at their shows, and hated their record company. Kill 'Em All was named that because that's what they wanted to happen to the record companies. Then they became the shill, turned their backs on the bootleggers, and sold them out.
- MtheoryX, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Perhaps this is the market readjusting itself.
Prior to large scale music piracy, it was not uncommon to see a ***** album go for $20.00 at a retail chain.
You don't think that's outrageous? Especially considering the costs involved in simply duplicating, packing and shipping something for years beyond when it was originally made, and still earning the same profit?
No, I don't worry about the musicians' money. They made an effing killing in the 90's and before; the new musicians just have to realize this business is not as lucrative as it once was.
That goes for many other professions as well. Many people are tightening their belts and becoming a bit smarter about the value of what they buy, and what they earn; why would musicians be any different?
It's not like they are doctors, rocket scientists, computer scientists. Why should they make millions and millions a year?
Hooray for the market! - DestroyFascism, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1MUsicians make money performing and touring. Royalties amount to bugger all after the labels take thier costs, advertising, legal, distribution and logistics, printing, labeling, artwork, etc etc etc. After all that there is nothing left. They also charge 10,000% more than what is required. 4 months in a studio does not cost 10 million.

From the article:
"On May 3rd, 2000, drummer Lars Ulrich, personally hand-delivered to Napster a list of over 300 000 Napster users who allegedly traded Metallica MP3 files (another 300 000 names were delivered on May 18th, 2000)."
Lars was *****. He went to WAR against his own fans.- dmjarrington, on 04/27/2008, -3/+3and he paid for it with his career. the masses are fickle, and he was reckless to tempt them. judging from the majority of the comments here they will never fully recover from the damage they have done to themselves by going against the people.
- DesertDude, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4"and he paid for it with his career."
St. Anger, considered by some to be one of their worst albums (it isn't), sold over 360 thousand copies in its first week. So far it sold over two million. And that's despite its flaws and Metallica's issue with Napster.
"judging from the majority of the comments here they will never fully recover from the damage they have done to themselves by going against the people."
LOL. See above. Plus, you think the digg community represents the majority of people?

- Tyr7, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1You do know that this is the band that thanked the fans for a grammy because the radio stations wouldn't play thier music. After getting the grammy One goes into radio rotation and then the black album becomes a big F U to fans that got them the grammy in the first place. Then with Fuel they jump on the already passing grunge bandwagon.
As far as I see this its just another unoriginal move from a band that has long past its prime. In hind site Jethro Tull deserved the grammy they beat Metallica for in the first place.

hypocrites! - Nhmarine, on 04/27/2008, -6/+451) their new music sucks. I hate St. Anger, and pretty much everything after the Black Album has lost its touch with the "Metal" part of Metallica. 2) If I were them I don't care what my position was, I wouldn't change it because of the obvious calumniations that would come with it. If they want to increase their popularity, they certainly aren't helping. Dumbasses.

The best part was the out of print stuff, not stealing per se, you couldn't buy this stuff anywhere I knew of.

- LMControl, on 04/27/2008, -21/+29***** Metallica! The most overrated piece of ***** band ever! They represent everything unholy about the music industry and are a bunch of sellouts who release the same garbage over and over..... I hope they all die a horrible death.
- Fixhotep, on 04/27/2008, -7/+4The whole concept of "selling out" is irrelevant. Things were different before the internet hit its stride: underground bands of all genres were largely only played on college radio and independent stations simply because there was no other means to distribute the music that only appealed to a specific, discerning audience. Bands like the Replacements and Husker Du and countless others gained cult followings through word of mouth and found their audience that way. so when the Replacements (just using them as an example) did "sell out" in their later years, it was a very clear line to cross between underground and the mainstream. That line is nonexistent these days. there are so many outlets and ways for music to be heard that the very definition of mainstream music is fuzzy at best.
The Shins, an "indie" band, are not mainstream in the sense that Kelly Clarkson is mainstream, but because of the internet they are very popular and the majority of people have heard of them, despite not having a radio hit. This wouldn't ever have happened 15/20 years ago. not to mention the very act of "changing ones sound to become a hit" was always a kind of laughable accusation. Bands do grow and develop and refine their art from album to album. Even worrying about your favorite band "selling out" is simply a result of one being stuck in an outdated frame of mind. Music, and the way music is heard nowadays, has rendered this meaningless. It's an elitist attitude and you should spend more time going to shows and listening to your favorite bands than worrying about them selling out so they're no longer "yours." It means nothing nowadays and anyone who is still stuck in this mindset is missing the point completely.- Encablossa, on 04/27/2008, -2/+8Zzz
- PhoneJack, on 04/27/2008, -0/+9Release the same garbage over and over? Every album is different. Even if they do suck now, their first four albums will always be a part of my youth.

No wonder they stop selling, but no, it couldn't be their fault, it had to be napster.

- kds405, on 04/27/2008, -0/+13"Prima Donna" is what you were going for. Pre-Madonna was a horrible time, a dark age if you will, where we didn't have this angelic Madonna adopting all the needy children and telling us all how to live.
- ichbeineinrcg, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3No, that's post Madonna. The real Madonna died in 1997 and was replaced by Bea Arthur, which is why the music has sucked ever since.

Hell, last one I LIKED by them was "....and justice for all". Everything after that pretty much sucked.
And now? Hey! You can download their power-ballads! With their blessings!

- npcabral, on 04/27/2008, -7/+27As much as I like their music, these guys can go ***** themselves. Selfish pricks. Personally I don't see why anyone in the entertainment industry is held up in such a high regard. What the ***** are they doing for the world? We have people starving in the world, being murdered for their beliefs. All any of these "artists" see is opportunities to get their faces out in the public eye. (Yes that includes Bono, Madonna, Angelina... all those people that love hearing " Oh wow you are so amazing...look at what this person is doing for the world.." Its like tax deductible exposure... and really, what the hell are they doing? Is Metallicas job so tough that they need to "earn" millions? Such BS. Screw the record companies, producers, and everyone in between. Artists should strive to put their art out, by any means. It should be seen and heard by all.
- Chiliap2, on 04/27/2008, -8/+1I don't agree. These artists probably donate more money than you will ever.
- npcabral, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2They may donate more, but I doubt they donate as high a percentage of their earnings as I do (what is $100,000 when you spend that much on a purse?) ...and not just me. Plenty of people donate. You don't need to be filthy rich to give to those who are less fortunate.
- samard2002, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Of all the pro-piracy arguments, the jealousy one is the lamest.
- DharmaTurtle, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1Sounds like someone has a huge case of the bitter. If the tax deductions are really that great, then why doesn't EVERYONE do it? Think it through, please.
I hate it when people make arguments like this. People always want to criticize, nitpick, demean. If celebrities raise awareness by doing something, who are you to criticize them for it? Bono has been to Africa how many times? Angelia Jolie has actually reached out and helped children? What was the last thing you did for charity?
And, for no reason whatsoever, there still are people with big hearts out there. 100$ million ANONYMOUS donation to the University of Chicago. I bet you haven't changed, and can still find something to bash about this great anonymous person.

- colincornaby, on 04/27/2008, -8/+55"Metallica Now Embraces File-Sharing?"
Huh? The title is completely inaccurate. Radiohead and NIN do business by selling on the internet. All this means is that Metallica may sell their next album online. It has nothing to do with filesharing.- microbefox, on 04/27/2008, -1/+7True, but with online distribution it will lead to consumers to file share the tracks. However, there's no word on whether they're going to use a DRM model for their online distribution... This story IS quite vague.
- Crossmenjeff, on 04/27/2008, -0/+6they'll embrace their fans money.
- Olfster, on 04/27/2008, -1/+8Since 1994 that is all they have embraced. Artistically they are washed up.
- PinkFloyd2003, on 04/27/2008, -2/+1Yeah I got mad when I read the title but then I read the article and I actually sort of agree with them. It's not even about file sharing. I mean you can play the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon game to get there but that's not the issue. They actually have had downloads of live shows on their site for years now. Just because they'll start selling albums online doesn't make them hypocrites. Like them or hate them, this specific instance in no way makes them hypocritical.
