The Loudness War has wounded many. Now it has all but killed "Death Magnetic." - madrigal77, on 09/15/2008, -0/+15Go on youtube and listen to the Guitar Hero mixes. There is such a huge difference. Someone on the Metallica forums posted a clip comparing TDTNC. Same 24 second clip. One from the CD, one from Guitar Hero. The Guitar hero one sounds incredible. It is crystal clear and reminds me a lot of the production on TBA. The CD version is, as I'm sure you've all heard, a distorted mess.
Here's a link to the samples:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=202V8PQA - crevi, on 09/12/2008, -1/+15It is unfortunate that Metallica released such a great new album yet is is hard to listen to due to the sound quality.
Even at lower volumes some songs sound like you are cranking speakers beyond what they are capable of. - doogins2876, on 09/12/2008, -0/+14Please stop ruining music with this complete rubbish!!!! I would like to see quality and integrity restored in this industry.
- spikes, on 09/13/2008, -0/+12Apparently the album was already brickwalled during recording by the mixing engineers long before it even went to the mastering studio. Very bad if true as it doesn't leave any options for better quality re-releases or remasters.
- Psych971, on 09/14/2008, -0/+11All I can say is... WTF?!
I got a bootleg copy of the album a couple weeks before the release. While I loved the old-school sounding Metallica to death, I couldn't help but notice the crappy sound quality. I was certain it was just that particular disc I had and the "official" one wouldn't have this issue. Lo and Behold on 9/12 when my copy arrives it sounds exactly the same! I wasn't even aware of the "Loudness Wars" before this...this is ridiculous!!! Is this a ploy to sell a re-mastered versions down the line or what?
Unacceptable. And shame on them for abusing their fans' loyalty. - ryan69969, on 09/15/2008, -0/+9It really is a night/day difference. I would love to know the story behind all this. To have tracks which are licensed to a console video game sound infinitely better than the band's retail CD release is just bizarre.
I had a Sendspace link for these also, but it was stricken almost immediately. - urizen123, on 09/13/2008, -0/+8Wakers, just so you know - you're entering dangerous territory by posting links to this Digg article on the official message board - both myself and another member were banned a few weeks ago for posting links to a similar article.
Coupled with the petition you've been promoting, you're not exactly endearing yourself to the moderators!
Just a word of advice. Anyhow, keep fighting the good fight - I'm with you 100% on this one. - gleenistic, on 09/12/2008, -1/+9This could have been such a fantastic record - most of the songs are really good. However, the sound production leaves a LOT to be desired. In fact, the band (if they really care about their fans) should announce a full re-mix/ re-master of the entire thing.
- MetalMoose, on 09/12/2008, -1/+8Stop this ridiculous Loudness War and let us get back to listening to well produced music.
Pls sign this petition http://www.gopetition.co.uk/petitions/re-mix-or-re ... - joodicap, on 09/14/2008, -0/+5this is such a shame... almost every little independent band can produce low budget albums that sound way better than death magnetic. how much did the production of dm cost? i think i even don't want to know. ;-)
but seriously... how could this happen? now that finally Metallica are back with new and pretty good songs, who the f*** is responsible for the f***ed up sound of that record? without the extreme clipping and dynamic compression this album would be a pleasure to listen to. :-(
let's hope that the band as well as the label admit that the cd doesn't sound as it's supposed to and release a remixed/remastered version anytime soon. - supermanred, on 09/15/2008, -0/+5Bands seem to have forgotten that you can use volume as part of your creativity. Nowadays they seem to just want to crank up the volume. I love how some of my old LPs sound (yes, I've converted many of them to Lossless files...and they still sound great)... Back when volume would drop and raise for dramatic effect in songs (or creative effect)
Nowadays it seems that everything and every part of every song is at the same volume... LOUD. - ryan69969, on 09/13/2008, -1/+6It really does seem like they haven't taken their last two records seriously at all. I question how they expect us to spend money on their stuff when they're just going to screw around, production-wise, like that.
- pepinox, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4OMG, people who got this album for free on the most prominent private bittorent trackers, are trashing it like a dying rat!
And with good reason: the sound is distorted to hell.
What a pity. We are back again to AJFA and waiting again for a decent Metallica release. - spikes, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4This album must be halfway decent when so many people are bitching about the sound quality.
- booyaka842002, on 09/13/2008, -0/+4Sad but true eh?!
- WanderlustX2, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3At least jejah can't use his God-awful deep pink "give me attention" color here.
- codethief, on 09/24/2008, -0/+3ledevelyn: I think you're missing the point, distortion in metal sounds excellent, distortion because it's clipping to hell sounds crap ... as to your point about it not being about dynamic range, why bother having soft or quiet parts in a track if they're the same volume as the loud bits! Without good dynamic range you don't get the kick in the balls when they come back in heavier than before.
- CarnivalOfDust, on 09/15/2008, -1/+4Great, now my ears are bleeding. Thanks, Metallica.
- grapheads, on 09/15/2008, -3/+5Rock is about head banging, moshing, and creating bad ass jams. Its not about making money. Metallica forgot that, and that is why St. Anger suxxed and that is why this album sucks.
- Stifflerai, on 09/12/2008, -1/+3Absolutely love the songs. Already been fortunate to see two of them live too. I Couldn't believe how "The Day That Never Comes" sounded 1000x better in real life. The sound quality of the album is bloody awful, it's now reached the point where I don't actually enjoy listening to it as all I hear is the piss poor sound issues. Get it fixed Metallica, you've always been good to your fans and this is a massive disappointment being handed this piss poor effort
- 0tis, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2Why would you do that? Really, just why?
EDIT: *Blames Lars* - fit4130, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Exactly, couldn't have said it better myself.
***** stupid to have every single bit of the song be the same loudness. It's a ***** shame because the album had promise. - temsi, on 09/15/2008, -0/+2RTFA
- ahhell, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Get real.
You're one of those guys that likes a band until they make it big then they are sell outs, right? - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1I just loaded Death Metallic on my iPod. Sounds like ***** unless I turn the EQ off, then I lose a lot of dynamics and it sounds kind of flat.
- ryan69969, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1http://www.megaupload.com/?d=202V8PQA
Put on a pair of headphones and listen to the two clips. It's very noticeable. - inactive, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1no, all they have to do is open the protools sessions and turn the L3 on every channel off.
L3 multiband ultra maximizer - Cornrider, on 09/16/2008, -0/+1It wasn't Metallica dumbhoolio, it was the tool sound engineer dude that pulled the dirty deed in order to please the label
- swartza, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1The Guitar Hero mix sounds like crap! People this is metal! It is suppose to be loud! Stop complaining!
- Thycid, on 01/17/2009, -0/+0Volume comes from the listeners VOLUME KNOB!!! Not the record companies. If you knew anything about hi-fidelity, you would already know that eliminating it doesn't PUMP the album, it does the opposite.
- ryan69969, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1It is even more of an affront to the fans when Mission: Metallica assured everyone that the sound issues would be fixed for the CD release, only for us to find that information to be completely false:
http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.Net/ ... - abotsis, on 09/15/2008, -1/+1After listening to a flac copy of this album, I refuse to buy it until there's a remastered edition out. I spend too much money on high-end audio gear to blow what's left on horribly mastered discs. Too bad, too. :(
- grapheads, on 09/15/2008, -2/+1Hell no. I still love popular bands like RATM and Deftones. But you don't see those bands whining about file sharing.
- pjf1fan, on 09/17/2008, -1/+0I own all of Metallica's albums on original store-bought cds. I picked this one up on Saturday September 13th. I hear distortion and clipping. I'm hoping they re-master this album, it is far too important to just leave it alone. The songs are enormous and throbbing, I need this on a daily basis, it's the sound quality that makes me yearn for something else. Justice For All anyone?
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -7/+6Metallica sucks, now.
- vismund9, on 09/17/2008, -2/+1its very annoying. lets put an end to this ***** linkin park loudness
- swartza, on 10/08/2008, -2/+1I`m with you buddy!! These whiners have to shut up!! They are ruining music! I say remaster it and make it even louder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- fasda, on 09/15/2008, -2/+1I'm starting to think I'm tone deaf cause I don't know what these guys are talking about sounds fine to me
- swartza, on 10/08/2008, -2/+1How many of you whiners even bought the album! Shut up and go whine about something meaningful... like gas prices!
- swartza, on 10/08/2008, -2/+1I can`t believe that this is going on! You are all a bunch of whiners! Metal is suppose to be heavy! I love the sound. I love the heavyness. I love when my speakers make that 'whomp' sound! Which is also present on other Metallica albums! It sounds great! Most of you probably didn`t even notice this on your own anyway!
- ledevelyn, on 09/17/2008, -4/+1Oh my god... you kids are crying cos Metallica released an album that's too loud for you???. boo ***** hoo... it's awesome...
Oh, and for those of you that aren't engineers... it's called soft-clipping. And it really pumps the f*ck out of the music.. Without it in fact (see the guitar hero version which is simply an unmastered mix with the drums turned up so you can hear the timing easier) it sounds a bit weak actually... Metal isn't about hi-fidelity and high dynamic range! It's about drums that blow your head off and guitars that sound like a cat being throttled (yeah!)... Now stop whining people and go watch the ***** live!!! They RULE!!
Metallica are hear to blow your heads off... and they have clearly succeeded... I salute them!!! - freakFlag, on 09/15/2008, -5/+0I'm not sure why everybody is upset about the audio quality on this album, I was expecting it before I bought it. This is why you need hardware analog equalizers and not be so dependent on digital EQs and digital audio processors. If you play an old album by this band, a 1st press, guess what, its loud and its clipped. You people and your digital audio processing. Even the people downloading the digital copies are complaining? Yikes. Though, its pretty dick of a producer to replicate an early 80s metal sound without an early warning and its pretty dick to use such a loud preamp adjustment when digital EQs and digital audio processors are the norm. I'm still siding with Metallica and the production team for attempting to take us back to the roots of this genre, it was a good hearted decision. As for you ***** complaining about the audio quality on compressed mp3s, buck the ***** up and get a better copy.
