Mashing or bootlegs for beginners
paintingbynumbers.com — The term "mash-up" or "bootleg" describes the result of mixing together two or more records to create a whole new track. This document outlines how mash-ups can be made using the software package Tracktion.

- djmallon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I personally love doing this on my spare time - the infinite combos can be just outrageous. Check out my site if you want some of my stuff - http://www.djmallon.com

"A bootleg is an unofficial release of something done by a band", often a live performance or unreleased material.
"Bootlegging" originally meant "smuggling", especially related to the smuggling of alcohol.
It is *not* when you mix two songs together. - dimwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Umm ... It *is* an unofficial release.
- djmallon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sure it can be when two tracks are mixed together - band can be a loose term for producer or DJ, and it most likely is 'unreleased' due to the massive legal technalities/sampling rules that small time DJs like myself would face if I ever wanted my creations on the radio.
For example, soulwax did a nirvana vs. destiny's child track called 'smell like teen booty' (extremely hot track, check it out), but that has never heard the light of day on mainstream radio, even though it's just hiliarious. - Zampa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0see http://digg.com/music/_The_Ghost_That_Feeds_(Ray_Parker_Jr._vs._Nine_Inch_Nails)
:) - uglyredhonda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Making a mash isn't called "bootlegging", it's called "booting". And the finished product is generally referred to as a mash, mash-up, or bootleg.
These tracks don't see the light of day on radio because they're not officially endorsed by the artists. Some radio stations play them anyway during specialty shows (like Live 105 in San Francisco) and simply pay royalties to the publishers of the original tracks.

http://luke.enlow.net/music.html - Function, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mash-ups are sort of tired. They are fun for a few weeks, but get old quick. It is nice to grab them as white labels sometimes, if you can find them anywhere.
Mash technically = remixing the hooks/parts of both songs to form a cohesive whole, new song.
Bootleg technically = any unauthorized release of an artist's copyrighted material. (i.e. mash-up, live concert, rare single white label, etc.) - jbwiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It'd be really useful to see a listing of open source programs that can be used to do this (Audacity, maybe?). I'd like to get into it but don't want to spend the $$$ on a passing fancy.
- ohgr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I prefer using Acid Pro 5 personally.
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tried the vocal removal on diddo. Didn't work, just made it sound like a crappy filter had been applied.

It set the bar for "mashes" for me. - ziggystardust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mashing is definitely a new direction for music, at least a new solid genre.
- Function, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd hardly call it a new direction. Definately not a new genre, I'd say it's more fun to hear old tunes that everyone likes, mixed. It's really just a novelty, Dj's have been doing this for years.
If anything, it's a step up from sampling. Fun and enjoyable, but lacking substance, like bubble gum. - MrShogo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a cool site. Maybe I will mash some songs, that I have created for my new attempt at a entertainment radio show (mostly gaming,) which I implore you, please take a look at, but of course don't have to...
