- l1wulf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10RE: the people complaining about how it's using WMP 11 and not avail for Linux...
You know, I would like to play DVD audio, MP3 CDs and regular CDs on my plain CD player in my car. I'm not willing to spend more money on a new system and I don't like look of the newer decks. It's so unfair.
If you CHOOSE to run Linux for its many fine properties, then turn around and complain that people don't develop the same apps as they do for Windows. I've got no pity for you. If it is so unfair, get up and make an alternative, fund someone else to do so, or run windows (either dual boot or on another computer). Linux is great for everything it offers and has many free distros, but, because it lacks so many things that are so commonplace on windows, it is not a consumer desktop OS. Period. Maybe someday, but not right now. It is not hard to understand, and I would think that if you can run Linux as your primary/only OS, you should be able to comprehend that YOU WILL NOT GET EVERYTHING WINDOWS GETS.
As for WMP11 being a resource hog. It is not even a release candidate yet. It is a next generation application, with Vista squarely in it's sights. It is not ideal, but it is pretty much the law of the land. New versions of applications with new features typically have higher requirements. Again, if you don't like it, either don't use it, or make your own alternative.
Stop acting like you don't have a choice and poor you for not enjoying what the rest of the world has. - HavocStyles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10 System Requirements
Broadband Internet connection
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or higher
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or above
Note: Installing URGE will also install Windows Media Player 11 and Flash Player Version 8
Linux users such as my self are left out in the cold, even though it sounds like a great service but I will not install Winblows just to use it. MTV get away from that proprietary DRM crap!!! - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think your comment is out of touch.
Name a music brand bigger than MTV
Name a software company with more power than Mircosoft.
Welcome to 2006. It's like 1999 but were at war. - binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You would think MTV would be a little more tech friendly but they seem to always be behind the times. I mean Wal-Mart had this before them and MTV is all about music (well.. tv shows, then music). It makes you wonder who is in charge of that and who needs to get fired.
I'm sure a company with reach like that with artists could really release something very cool. - definiteform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Beatport blows this away.
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6MTV and Microsoft,
Welcome to 1999
http://www.shoutcast.com/ - TheBeaver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Anyone interested in listening to DJ streams has probably already been listening to the zillion other sites that offer DJ streams, totally void of any proprietary software. Pretty weak Microsoft. Pretty weak.
- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4but if u have a Mac, why not use iTunes? i doubt ur gonna buy a player that isn't an iPod anyways... Urge is setting itself up to be the main competitor of iTunes (for all the music players that aren't iPods)...
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Won't work on a Mac because of DRM. ***** you, MTV.
- Dorkbot101, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4Couldn't agree more. DI is a great service. Although it's 100% free, I still pay the premium to get the extra quality streams and email. I like to support the company... been listening since they opened in 98' or 99'.
Now, about the article: this is just a horrible attempt 'breaking into' the streaming market. Diggs to TheBeaver's comment below. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7its ***** compared to iTunes... and Windows Media Player 11 is a resource whore...
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No to mention most DJs release their mixes online for free anyway..
I've got all of mine online.. :P www.djneoform.com (haha, *thumbs down for spam*) - banglogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When I saw the title for this article: "MTV's fledgling download service streams DJ mixes" my heart sank a little. I'm working on a similar project: Podcast subscriptions to DJ mixes: www.zagzoo.com (Sorry, don't mean to spam)
- Avengelist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Someone doesn't know his electronic music roots.
... and trance is for nonces. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3at the same time though MTV is wise by teaming up with Microsoft.... think of all the noobs and computer retards who just use the software that comes on the computer... all those people will automatically use Urge to download music because it is packaged right inside of MP11 which will be packaged with Vista...
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't worry, it's guaranteed your taste in music is better than Mtv's anyway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pay for a set?
hahah
lets face the truth, most eletronic djs release sets for free - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is correct
all those producers/djs = suckage - stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I mean, I totally disagree with massona3, but not knowing electronic music roots? You mean like Kraftwerk? Not American.
I listen to whatever catches my ear, then find out who it is. As a result, I find myself listening to things from all over the globe. - deggiweg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2run Linux and then complain you can't view certain content on the web....right.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you all suck at the techno
Breakcore = pwn - Nerdomatick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You aren't really well versed in electronic music if you call it "electronica".
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another great site is soma.fm. Lots of great choices for commercial-free mixes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree with the first part..
but its MTV's doing - mrgn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thing about fledgings is they are notoriously hard to keep alive. MTV should offer a service to download vapid dating shows, grown men getting slammed in the crotch by shopping carts and greedy 16 year olds throwing parties with their parents money. That eagle would SOAR!
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1True, I wasn't going to use it anyway. It just makes me mad that I can't. And I like saying "***** you, Mtv".
- garyfranz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1two words:
Donald Glaude - NorrisOBE, on 09/13/2008, -0/+0epic win for virtualanalog.
- MysticSavage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those who enjoy mixes, bootlegs, etc. check out the forums on

This electronic music guide should help-
http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html
You can't put down American electronic music because the music you love wouldn't even exist without it. You said you like progressive. What type of progressive? Progressive house? House was invented in Chicago. Oh and techno all started in Detroit.
Saying electronic music started in London is absolute *****. You probably meant dance music, but sorry that wasn't “born in London” either. The 4x4 beat was not invented in London… ever heard disco?
Stop pretending like all good electronic music is just a rip off of English electronic. There's more to electronic music than the progressive and trance you are listening to. Hopefully you will eventually realize that there are so many more types of good electronic music.
People were not suddenly turned onto electronic music by 4x4 beats. I’d say most people over here in the states hate “techno” (that’s what most people over here call any form of electronic dance music).
The first synthesizer was invented in 1876. Electronic music has been around for much much longer than you think. - masona3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Avengelist:
Electronic music was born in the basement clubs of London sometime between 1977 and 1979. That's London, England. England is in Europe, in case you weren't aware. The sound quickly spread to surrounding cities and, by the end of 1978, had overtaken many of the major night spots in Europe. It was on this wave that the club scene in Ibiza was established.
It wasn't until a few savvy individuals brought the sounds of 4x4 house and the original sounds of English techno to New York and Miami in the early 1980's (1982, specifically) that electronic music caught anyone's attention in the United States. It's been a downhill journey from there. Unfortunately, people here still think that "artists" such as DJ Dan, Donald Glaude, Darude, and Sammy are masters of their craft. - hessman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been to www.theshortstack.com in the podcasting section and found better mixes from guys like dj noodles for hiphop and dj mechanix for trance. There is a wide variety of music there and setup for immediate download
- blindReticle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, I have an idea: Let's create a proprietary version of streams you can already get merely by installing Winamp and clicking a link! That'll work, won't it?
Btw, if you think American techno sucks then you don't listen to Dieselboy. - masona3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I'd rather listen to the sounds of my own farts than listen to American electronica. (With the exception of Gabriel & Dresden and a few other powerhouses, all of whom take their influence from the European dance gods of old.)
American "techno" is garbage. Give me trance and progressive or give me death. - kirashira, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3downloading music legallly is for pussys!!!
