- CaptainSpeaking, on 10/12/2007, -7/+140I can see why they'd ban this video... the average MTV spectator does not have the critical thinking nor philosophical abilities to even comprehend the main theme of the video/song.
- NtHammer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+107since when did MTV play music??
seriously, i see anything BUT music on MTV when im looking through the tv guide, its ridiculous - binky79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+69I can't think of a better way to promote a video than to make the claim, "Banned by MTV." Cool video though.
- SubWolf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+59I'm more pleased to see that Faithless are putting out another album! FANTASTIC!
Can't say I found anything really wrong with the video. - MarkCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52Seeing how MTV plays the worst excuses for music I don't see why they'd ban anything based on whether it sucked or not.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44I like how it put the hell of war right next to our comfy lives. We too often forget that while we have silly pissing matches on digg, there are people living and dying in pure terror.
Shame on MTV for yet again choosing fluff over substance. God forbid we think about what others are going through. - jamessavik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44Banned you say? Anything banned gets my attention.
Probably too socially relevant for MTV's plastic soul machine. You wouldn't want to make the kiddies sweat ethics while you are showing ***** reality shows and selling zit-cream and tampons. - xlocust, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42MTV had balls?
- Tyr7BE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41MTV doesn't play music anymore. It's all *****-rock and bubblegum pop. Maybe the occasional boy-punk band and thugged-out rapper thrown in for "edge". It's too bad. What once was the bastion of youth culture has turned into corporate drivel.
- Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41Wow. So this is what it's come down to.
MTV, supposedly some kind of beacon of free thought and rebellion in a world of restless rubes is finally (at long last...it's been a downward spiral since 'MTV Raps') forced to come to grips with the fact that it's anything -but- relevant.
Of course, MTV *is* one of the Military's main conduits for reaching our lycra-wearing, collar-popping, identity-searching, during-a-movie-constantly-texting youth, so it only makes sense that they would want to keep from making waves.
Disgraceful.
If people complain that American media has a liberal bias while even our tweeny-rebellion stations won't air something that critiques the slaughter of war - well, they're welcome to thier opinion, but it's a stupid one. - mypenis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Banned from MTV? That's an HONOR!
Why would they want their video on that tasteless channel anyway? - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36I'm actually relieved that it wasn't another one of those crappy "war is bad, people die" music videos with a song that has nothing to do with war that bands sometimes put together to try and show that they are politically aware. The song made me sleepy though...
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31I agree. Excellent. But really, they may as well ban every other U2 Song
For Example: War - smaisch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Hell yes. Faithless puts out some of the most inspiring and thought provoking work.
I think the clash between everyday activities and war discussed in the video is very real. Think of all that is happening in the world right now, that we are somehow involved with, whether we are conscious of our decisions or not. The video techniques are also very inspiring.
Way to go Faithless! - ashbrahma, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Faithless Rocks!!
- centinall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Yeah, this video was great.
I'm glad that MTV's not going to air it. Wouldn't want to change the way I feel about MTV.
"I can't get no sleep" - ronfez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25MTV plays videos?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I think the scene involving the flag-draped coffin being unloaded was the tipping point for the ban (if true). There was a charged debate about the unloading of coffins (transfer tubes) and the banning of photographs of this event by Rumsfeld & White House. I think that image is powerfully symbolic of the US-Iraq war, and the stifling of internal debate in America at that time.
- smaisch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28America is the most responsible nation for this war. That's my best guess why.
- orientis, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28Suck it *****, language is fluid and you're a stone. Drown.
ROCK - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23WHAT?
- SHIFTderek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21YEAAA OKKKKK
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It's showing you that while we spend our ordinary comfortable lives watching TV, playing on the beach and collecting more things, others are enduring pure hell.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I normally don't like watching music videos due to lack of content that interests me but I have to say... This is number one in my book.
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19drunkjack:
lighten the ***** up. just because you can't understand other forms of music doesn't make them bad. - CaptainSpeaking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Faithless conveyed how warfare has become just another factor in our daily lives, and how we tend to be accommodated with its atrocities.
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18yeah, i was surprised too.
- SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Those were not bleeps and bloops. Listen to some Autechre, Squarepusher, or Aphex Twin if you think Faithless makes bleeps and bloops. Music is the manipulation of sounds in order to achieve a desired effect. This Faithless song features the key characteristics of music such as rhythm, melody, harmony.
If you don't like the instruments and implements being used to create such sounds, fine. But that doesn't mean it isn't music. - PktLoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Can someone source the banned claim?
- SuckMyDigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Yeah. If the song isn't about 40s, blunts, and bitches its not deep enough for this generation.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13They aired "Smack my Bitch Up" and Madonna's "Like a Prayer." Granted, they pulled them both after complaints, but c'est la vie.
MTV probably banned the video mostly because of the use of guns, violence, and violent language, which they have banned. While I can appreciate the banning of glorified violence at times, this song is anything but. - dagonweb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12MTV is no longer YOURS, right now it is THEIRS.
The western world always stood for prosperity through peacefull means. The balance has shifted: it now stands for retaining whatever prosperity is left though terror. It is a sudden defensive stance where the modern world fears being replaced by other cultures and become downright mean in retalliation. And THEY cant have the population of the west thinking any different now, do they? You wouldn't want some kid thinking that those other, alien cultures are in any way not so bad, right?
So basicly MTV sold out and need to die. - sporkman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14who are you to say what music is?
just because you don't like the way it sounds you consider it "not music"
you are a very close minded person. - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18WHAT??
- Kerr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15MTV has lost its balls.
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15OKKKAAAYYYYY!!!
- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Pretty thought-provoking video, although I can understand(although completely disagree with) why it was banned. The Bush Administration declared some sort of media black-out on images of soldiers' flag-draped coffins a few years ago and it has pretty much stuck. I guess they consider it bad form or enabling The Terrorists(tm) or some such ***** excuse. MTV has always been a tool when it comes to controversy. They talk a tough game, but they don't have the nuts to back it up. I'm not surprised one bit by their decision.
I must say though. The video could have done without the starving Ethiopian fellow narrating through most it. ;p
- themaestro8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Good video, however its no "Just"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=CzEdITdGht4
What an ending. - orientis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Minimalist electro, minimalist trance, these things are bleeps and bloops..
Personally I can't stand it, but I sure as hell wouldn't attempt to undermine its status as music just because I don't like it, you ***** jackass. - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Wow. If this really is banned, thats disgusting. All this video tries to do is put things in perspective. We see so much violence and war on the tv, things like this need to be more common.. it's a shame.
- percussionlab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11lol that starving Ethiopian fellow is the head of the group :D
anyway, great video - tho i'm not much of a faithless fan. The chorus was a bit saccharine... - SuckMyDigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It's for you to interpret. I agree with the above comments though.
- orientis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Squarepusher are ***** fantastic, and Bucephalus Bouncing Ball by Aphex is one of my favourite bits of music ever - specifically because it does blur the line between 'sound' and 'music'.
- SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's not trying to pass itself off as rock, and i don't see what their sexual orientation has to do with anything.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Wow, very deep an well done imho.
I think it was a bit too generally anti-war (ala "War, huh, What is it good for, absolutely nothing"), because war is necessary under the right circumstances. It was not, or did not appear to be, a direct attack on Iraq and Vietnam-type wars.
As for the ban, I suppose MTV would rather air things about "I got mah ***** and raped tha bitch yo" than videos that would actually inspire critical thought -- whether or not you agree with the message. Of course, at least half of their audience would probably have a reaction like "Oooo, explosions! Fuuuuuuun! *Goes to blow something up*" - SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If I recall correctly, Faithless is British. I wonder if the ban effects only MTV in the U.S., since it was Herrs Bush and Rumsfeld's decree not to show images of coffins. Their ban shouldn't be able to apply in Europe. Just curious.
- manageMyRights, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8MTV edits out the word "Taliban" from that one rap song. And after 9/11 they wouldn't play anything from the B-52s just because of the US bomber plane (even though the band explicitly states its named after the bouffant haircut).
- halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8wow...nice video
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Where is the official statement that this is banned from MTV?
There is not a single story about this on google news. -
