Long-time DRM foe Yahoo Music planning DRM-free MP3 store

arstechnica.com — Yahoo plans to launch a DRM-free music store later this year, according to several music industry executives. It's still in early talks, but if Yahoo manages to sign deals with the Big Four, we could have some major DRM-free competition on our hands.

    Sure, SJ probably wrote that last year trying to dodge antitrust prosecution in Europe, but after iTunes started shedding some DRM, the trend had been set, DRM-free wasn't just for indie anymore...

    Early 2008, and the DRM dark age for music has basically been averted. Not that I would have cared too much if Paris Hilton's debut album were lost to history because of DRM... But now the rest of the music is safe too.
