- swaggadocio, on 08/20/2008, -3/+26So nothing like iTMS then?
- chronicon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Very gray area here considering it looks like everything on their "Most Popular Tracks" list is infringing the copyright of the artists. From the FAQ:
Q: Is all the music on Sideload.com legal to sideload or download?
A: Yes. Sideload.com does not store any music, but rather links to files publicly available other places on the net. Sideload.com respects the intellectual property of others, and we ask our users to do the same. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (the "DMCA") provides recourse for copyright owners who believe that material appearing on the Internet infringes their rights under U.S. copyright law. If you believe in good faith that materials listed on Sideload.com infringe your copyright you (or your agent) may send us a notice requesting that the material be removed, or access to it blocked... - CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Hate to break it to you, but U2 is pretty much the definition of Pop. Maybe they weren't 10 years ago, but today... big time.
- bubs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Kind of lame, half the songs brought up a username and password box for someone's password protected server when I clicked the play button. I'm not thinking this will be around too long and I'm really surprised that Yahoo Finance actually did a story on it considering how shady it seems.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Watch out, Steve Jobs, you are no longer the coolest! I do not work for this company, unlike many pro-Microsoft posters here!"
Was all that really needed? No. - ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Amarok comes pretty close though... much closer than gtkpod does. iPod's aside, it's the best music library software for Linux, IMHO.
-olly - nigeltufnel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6MP3.com tried this years ago (before CNet bought and ruined them), and was slapped around by the RIAA. See the "My.MP3.com" section here:

- Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5digg effect: from "30,601 Free tracks from 7,538 Artists Updated: 03/21/2006 11:00 am" to "0 Free tracks from 0 Artists Updated: 12/31/1969 12:00 pm" in less than one hotel california listening.
- gluon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"I do not work for this company, unlike many pro-Microsoft posters here!"
This article loses all merit when you put in disclosures like this. I think your assumptive logic is flawed when you argue that anyone who has a positive opinion of Microsoft must therefore work for them. Let's stop the bias, folks. - nmcglennon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Great idea... but how can you get this on your iPod?
I don't just listen to music when I have a computer you know... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Bono is a tool
- Laughingman234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ummm how is that like the iTMS? you have to pay to get other songs on there but it does work with linux which is cool...interesting idea...not what I expected...
- ShadowSwan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3doesn't seem to have much on there....
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sounds like other types of "file loaning" where the song is never actually copied to the other users, but rather just streamed like an online radio. IIRC this has already been done with client-side applications such as Mercora and a few others.
The point of it is that once the song is done playing, the user recieving the music still doesnt have a copy of their own, the real owner was just letting someone else listen in.
The difference here is that the music is being streamed from peoples "online lockers" instead of from their computers. - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5so, you can download songs for free? And how is this legal?
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't think Steve Jobs has anything to worry about, half the links are missing songs. At least when I pay $.99 I actually can get the song they have listed on iTMS. Still not a bad idea, but keeping up with broken links needs to be 100% before it becomes useful.
- omniatlas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3database is gone.
- Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the golden rule to have a story make it to digg frontpage is to make a direct/indirect reference to google, apple, microsoft, ajax, linux.
the title speaks for itself: it introduce us to something that is "like iTunes store" except it isn't like it "but free and linux compatible". the iTunes store mention is probably here to draw attention.
the "download free mp3s from sideload.com" title is 7 days older but has met little success. http://digg.com/music/Download_free_mp3_s_from_sideload.com
this downgrade the frontpage and digg overall quality. IMO digg could use a better dupe checker/blocker and a way of preventing deceptive title, or maybe simply more flexibility and a way to custom your own digg frontpage with some of your own filters. - MinnesotaTwins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hate when things are labeled as the *.Killer. This is nothing like iTunes. Can I download music legally and put it on my ipod?
While this is cool, I don't see how it compares to iTunes, and why Steve Jobs should be worried. - hanslope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Be wary of linking to Press releases, and there is mention of Free music being highlighted, so there is some pay music in there somewhere
- opinionist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3apreche, ...
"Nobody uses iTunes for the store or the streaming" !? - what do you base this broad sweeping statement on?
iTunes is a great application for subscribing to podcasts, purchasing music, audiobooks, tv shows ...
Surely 1BN online songs purchased on iTunes suggests SOMEONE uses iTunes for the STORE. No!? - Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At my office, there's a dozen other people sharing their iTunes. In practice, it isn't all that useful since you can't quickly search for the music you want, you can't make playlists with other people's tunes, and there's a maximum of five actual connections to your library every day. I'd love to find a competing app that would allow me to do those, especially one with FLAC and OGG support.
- jasongordon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If I throw up an MP3 on my server somewhere, legal or not, and then someone adds this to their locker, seems like my site will be flooded with bandwidth pretty quickly depending on how popular the song I choose is. In my opinion this is pretty dumb as I'm guessing many of the songs will be illegal songs on random webservers that wont be able to handle the bandwidth. No digg.
- mykill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sideload is a search engine which means that is has protection from the DMCA section 512c. They don't host any files themselves. They don't manually add or remove links. It is really no different than Google, Yahoo, MSN, webjay, etc. all of which have links to song files some of which may not be authorized. The DMCA states that search engines are not liable for files they link to as long as they adhere to properly submitted take down notices.
With more than 30,000 tracks, it's impossible for Sideload.com to know if a track is authorized or not. If a copyright owner takes exception to a listing they can ask them to remove the link, but of course the file still remains on the internet. Sideload is actually a good tool because copyright owners can see where files are coming from and ask the original source to remove it. If you click on the song tile, a more detailed page is displayed which shows where the file is actually hosted. - daeken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or you could use our download links and/or sideload the files into your locker and use them from there/sync them down to your PC. We're just an index; what you do with the files once you get them is essentially up to you.
- captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try Beatport or Karma Downloads, if you haven't already.
- AusIV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Look out iTunes! You've got a competitor of shady legality, low quality and a selection size about 6% of what you have.
Honestly. iTunes could care less about this service. The purpose of iTunes is to help sell iPods by making it easy and legal to download music. - binky79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No songs, and the site claims it hasnt been updated since 1969. Steve is probably just going to take iTunes down, the competition is obviously too intense.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can get a direct download link by right clicking the song you want, then looking at the javascript, in that there is a direct link to the mp3 file so you can do what you want, no Audacity needed
- fanboy00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they took the songs down.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2U2 used to be Irish rock maybe. I classify them as American Pop Crap. Or to be more international.. just crap.
Anyway, so they link to MP3s on the net. I would question how reliable they will be when some of these sites start to get hammered and they change thier links. - crash2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Download How-To
Play song go to (-->C:-->Documents and Settings-->COMPUTER NAME-->Local Settings-->Temporary Internet Files )
and look for the MP3 (eg. beautiful_day.mp3)
NO NEED TO DOWNLOAD
Internet Explorer Plugin - dizzyd_23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Free and works on linux? So then it's nothing like itunes then...
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it is in russia, where the servers are located
- Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh and a way to delete your own comment when you double post because server wasn't responding.
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't a grey area. According to the Grokster decision, they could still be in trouble. Although they're not sharing the music themselves, their system is a straight-up enabler for piracy. (Yes, even though it does have legitimate uses.)
They have done well with their comprehensive takedown policy, but it remains to be seen whether this is good enough to prevent the RIAA from going after them. - Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought the purpose of iTunes was to provide a purpose to iPod. I must say IMHO any iPod would be pretty useless without iTunes, and without the hacking community.
- daeken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There were problems with the database, but everything is back up now.
- daeken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My favorite song is My Pal Foot Foot by The Shaggs. If you haven't heard this auditory trainwreck yet, check out http://www.sideload.com/cb/track/?id=57855
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We get signal. Main Screen Turn on... *funky Techo music*
shut down in 3... 2... - pr0t3st, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3hello?! Pandora.
- einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sideload.com most certainly is legal, IMHO. It basically just aggregates free music from other sites on the net. It does not aggregate illegal music. Just legal music. The company that owns Sideload.com is going to take down illegal music, as one of the diggers pointed out in another comment on this page.
- Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No offence to hoopkid, but i think this one god dugg cos of the title, though its leff helpful, this one included "ITunes", "Linux" and "Free" in the same title
hoopkids story also had a direct link to the site, which is cool
though this one had a striking enough title to get dugg, without which i wouldnt have seen it, and been on my way to check it out now ~cya! - Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what if you want a song that's NOT listed on iTMS ? you just pray for it to be included ?
BTW broken links are due to digg effect IMHO - Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds logical when the db is down due to digg effect to have no results isn't it.
- einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sideload.com is not going to get sued out of existence. MP3tunes.com, the company that owns Sideload.com, is run by Michael Robertson, who founded MP3.com. That man has steel balls. He stood up to the RIAA in the past and won, and he'll do it again. Michael Robertson has been in more depositions than I have, and I'm a lawyer. He has been sued, glued, screwed and tattooed by the RIAA, and has always come out smelling like a rose. The man must have very good legal advice, because as an attorney myself, I must say that I don't see any legal vulnerabilities at all to this service. Of course, I have not researched the issue, and I don't practice IP law, and my opinion as stated in this post is not legal advice, but I do read a lot of non-legal sources about copyright, and I just don't see any copyright infringement at all here. Nor do I see any Grokster-type liability. MP3tunes is just helping people to make use of 1) legally free music, or 2) the users own legally licensed music.
- Metal_Guru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If seven days have gone by and it hasn't hit the front page, how is it wrong to post it up again? Or should you contact the first poster and urge him that it is time to re-submit it again? Or better, let it get buried because DUPES are evil? It's not like it duped a post 3 hours ago.
- einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hi stevegraham,
Sideload _is_ like the iTunes Music Store, in that you can get music from it, sync music to your computer, and create playlists with the MP3tunes.com site, which is the sister site to Sideload.com. In other words, it is a source of free legal music. And yes, MP3tunes.com will let you sync with your iPod. - einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, this is not a grey area. It is legal. Sideload.com just aggregates free music. MP3tunes.com, the company is going to take down illegal music.
