- donnikhan, on 07/08/2009, -3/+49It's a tricky situation. On one hand, the jackson's did a favor to the fans by having any type of public official ceremony. On the other hand, they assumed that the tax payers were going to pick up the bill for a public spectacle they created and that is total dick.
- cheetus, on 07/09/2009, -0/+42I don't know why the family isn't expected to cover the bill. I understand that he was a public figure, but memorial services are handled by estates for everyone else--he is no different.
- jo3design, on 07/09/2009, -2/+41and in the meantime, California schools can't afford to keep schools open...
- Teh_Shiz, on 07/09/2009, -0/+32Why did the city pay for it in the first place? I hope some city pays for my multimillion dollar funeral when I die
- Newscast, on 07/09/2009, -1/+25Honestly, they probably just should have had the fans pay a few dollars for their tickets.
Not to mention, you had 7,000 wealthy close friends of michael jackson there... it's a surprise they're not willing to front some money for the honoring of michael. LA shouldn't be stuck with the bill - inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+24Maybe a few of those actors that command 20 million dollars per picture could pony up some money. You know, some of his close friends. Or, how about this? Sell the DVD of the event and have all of the proceeds go to paying for the funeral, the extra money if any can be donated to helping fix the state's debt.
I know this might sound totally crazy, but maybe his family should pay the tab. It was their choice to have this public event. If I died tomorrow, my family would have to pay all of the debt associated with my funeral. - openingsound, on 07/09/2009, -6/+28go back to youtube
- slicksoul999, on 07/08/2009, -2/+24We know California can't front the bill
- sockpuppets, on 07/09/2009, -0/+20They were free, fool.
- pooter654, on 07/09/2009, -4/+21Don't ever refer your youtube followers to digg. I know it feels good being a youtube celebrity, but understand that's like being the master of a group of dyslexic lemmings. Using cheap populism to attract faux attention to the VERY COMMON PHENOMENON of someone being wrongfully accused of a crime is manipulative at best, shameful at worst. If you truly cared about the story of the soccer player, you should become a spokesman for every single person being wrongfully accused of a crime. Everyone has their story, but you only hear about this ***** because it's a rising soccer star. Although it's a great story, keep your blind youtube followers where they belong - youtube.
- alamedaman, on 07/09/2009, -0/+15how about NOT have a ***** memorial and close a bunch of streets for an entertainer
- Bloodwine, on 07/09/2009, -1/+14Is "spend now, find the money later" a typical approach in LA?
Maybe they can ask Al Sharpton to cover part of the bill. - digitalpencil, on 07/09/2009, -2/+13how do you instablock everyone who joined today?
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -3/+13"Anticipating about 250,000 people would converge on downtown streets, the Police Department deployed 3,200 officers starting at 2 a.m. When only about 1,000 fans showed up, police brass let about 1,000 officers go early,"
Sounds like LAPD ***** up the estimates not the Jackson family. - BoutDemCanes91, on 07/09/2009, -1/+10Mr Phillip DeFranco
I don't think you understand what digg is really about. The comment thread section is one of the main ideas of digg. People click and digg articles so they can then read the comments and share and contribute opinions. Once the comment threads get ***** up or spammed, like it has here, one of the main points of digging an article and digg.com itself, is gone, and it becomes ***** useless.
You brought an army of ignorant, and more than anything, hypocritical Youtubers who really just dugg this story because YOU told them to, who would have otherwise not dugg up the story or given two ***** about it on their own will.
I'm sure you did this with a good intentions, but you fail. The entire prisoner article on digg is totally useless. It could get 100k diggs, but it wouldn't matter since no one can contribute. - mytealjacket, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8No one talked about 'who would pay' before hand? I think it's crazy for the state to pay -- we don't have the money. If the Jackson's weren't going to pay, then they should have charged for tickets and just put a small portion of them up for free.
- SaladCactusKing, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7By the way, what many articles fail to mention is that AEG had the Concession Stands and little Memorabilia Shops in the stadium OPEN during the ceremony, so they DID make money, even though they claim it was a free service. Nothing like popcorn and a hotdog while staring at a casket, right?
Tim Leiwicke, the president of AEG actually had the balls to say "Shame on Congressman Zine for exploiting the dead" when he was asked to chip in.
Teachers are getting laid off everywhere, State workers are getting furloughed, people are getting IOUs, and the city of L.A is in a half billion dollar deficit, and here we are paying for this *****. Gross. - NeverReturnKid, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7Shouldn't the city have taken care of this while the plans were being made over the past week? The city should have laid it out like this "If you want to make use of our law enforcement, emergency, and other services, you need to pay for it. Otherwise, AEG, you can provide everything yourself." Asking for donations after the fact makes the city government look ignorant.
- doublehue, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7I wish I could double digg you
- CTRaiderThe1st, on 07/09/2009, -0/+7The people got free tickets. What makes you think they bought anything from licensed business & not just the illegal sales by street vendors?
- algaeturd, on 07/09/2009, -1/+8I'll go ahead and say it: The truth of the matter is that if you can't afford something, you simply don't buy it. You don't buy it and then go around asking for handouts to help pay for something after the fact. But I guess that's the American way. It was a nice, fitting ceremony but didn't Jackson also live his life by spending money he didn't have? I think he was 400 million in debt at the time of his death. And LA is almost 500 million in debt.
At some point, someone has to point out that something isn't working here and that the definition of insanity is doing something over and over exactly the same way while expecting a different result.
So yeah, it's kind of insane to offer to pay for something like that and then go, 'oops...we can't afford it. Donations please?' - superKduper, on 07/09/2009, -4/+10It's typical of the African American community to expect Society to pay for them and clean up their messes.
- Wilddigi, on 07/09/2009, -0/+5So all those rich friends and relatives can't pay for his funeral? Or maybe janet jackson could hold a concert to pay for her brother's funeral, no?
- TinternAbbot, on 07/09/2009, -7/+12They'll collect funds via all the extra tax revenues from businesses who made money from the influx of out of towners. That they're seeking anything beyond this is further evidence of the stupidity and wickedness of our governments.
- bringitontimx, on 07/09/2009, -0/+5Why is the city paying for it?
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -2/+7Maybe they can hit the Jackson family up for some of it. Oh, that's right, they spent it all paying off Jacko's molestation victims.
- Platypus3333, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4How are you so certain that the extra tax revenue will sufficiently alleviate the cost of the ceremony?
- scarlettletter, on 07/08/2009, -8/+12No one said to have 17,000 fans attend, should have just had it at his house with the rest of the animals!
- alais, on 07/09/2009, -3/+7Honestly California, you're giving New Jersey a run for the armpit of America title.
- Granfalloon, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4Someone help me out please - did the performers get paid for this or did they do the right thing and request no payment for such an event as Michael Jackson's passing? Please advise.
- BubblesTheChimp, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4I was at Neverland Ranch waiting for everybody!
- Palaceguard, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3Maybe we should pay for the ambulance and emergency bills too
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -2/+5So, all is forgiven for his inappropriate contact with children?
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -1/+4That's crazy talk.
- hoisonsauce, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3You're just angry because you had to put out for the tickets.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3You got one thing right, Michael Jackson's death, was good for the city.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4You're a piece of *****, phillip
- PatrickX, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2Of course LA should be stuck with the bill... they are the ones who decided to pay for it in the first place. People can donate if they want to, but how could LA have a right to force anyone to pay. Little wonder California is in so much debt (yes, I know state and municipal budgets are different).
- domains, on 07/09/2009, -1/+3You are silly, This is NOT what big cities do. Please name one another celebrity funeral that was paid for by the tax payers which required renting out something as large as the Staples Center. How much money did all the networks covering the event make?
- Akairenn, on 07/09/2009, -1/+3If it doesn't, just skim a million off the money being thrown into failed automotive businesses. No big deal.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2California is billions in the red. La is 500 million in debt. What's another mil. This government is out of control. State, Local, Federal.
- avrygoodfrnd, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2You can't even use proper punctuation, so if i were you, I'd shut the hell up.
- Nukem111, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2What's wrong with this picture?? hmm did his money up and disappear when he passed? Seems silly that the city spent millions of dollars that they didn't have on a funeral for Michael Jackson who's a multibillionaire... Plus it's not like the rest of his family isn't well off.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -1/+3Right, it's as if he never had any inappropriate, weird, bizarre relationships with young boys. Jesus juice was to get them drunk before he fondled them. I love how everyone forgets this...Jackson was a perverted wierdo.
- catdawg555, on 07/09/2009, -2/+4Could have not said it better myself ,hey why can't the race baiting pimps like al jackson or jesse sharpton pick up the bill now that there claiming him as a quote BLACK MAN un quote. btw where were they when he was going through his child molestation trial a few years back?
- down4twenty, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2Get this, they set up a website for MJ fans to donate money to cover atleast some of the city's expenses, which was 1.4 million dollars. MJ fans immediately flocked to the website and started donating, and ended up crashing the site for 8 hours, with only $17,000 donated. How do you ***** that up LA? No wonder Cali is broke, people there are idiots!
- TylerDuhrdan, on 07/09/2009, -1/+3Good, make them pay, those clowns should not get a free ride. If I wanted to host a memorial at the Staples Center on the tax payers dime I would get laughed at, but if it's the Jacksons, well that's different and ok.
Make them pay. - hoisonsauce, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2Funny, Michael Jackson had horrible money management skills. I wonder where he picked up that trait?
- monkeyrun, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1Oh are you saying that we didn't pay enough tax? Now you need to beg for more money?
