- ViRaZ, on 10/16/2007, -12/+98Kanye West doesn't care about originality.
- jwdarkstar, on 10/11/2007, -6/+76Maybe now he'll explode like Tetsuo did.
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -8/+65Stuff like this is slowly turning me into an Atheist.
As a Daft Punk and Akira fan, this makes me weep on the inside. - destructoid, on 10/11/2007, -7/+62No pedobear?
- PATSCRU, on 10/16/2007, -9/+62A little history:
At last year's MTV video music awards in Europe, Kanye's video lost to a video by relative unknowns in the Best Video category. Those unknowns were a french group called Justice with their remix of a Simian Mobile Disco song. Justice is the flagship group under the now hot-as-***** electronic label Ed Banger. Kanye was furious upon his loss, and got up on stage and ranted and raved about how he was the best and deserved the video yadda yadda yadda.
Feeling like a large douchebag, Kanye called up Ed Banger and apologized and started talking with the label's owner, Pedro Winter (Busy P) who is incidentally Daft Punk's manager. Winter then introduced Daft PUnk to Kanye, who before meeting Winter had no idea who the ***** Daft Punk is (a cardinal sin in most countries). Then, in a desperate attempt to show that he is in the know with those robot gods of electronic music, incorporated their song Harder Better Faster Stronger into one of his steaming piles of ***** known as a song. Influenced by Daft PUnk's vintage sci-fi anime imagery, Kanye opted for Akira as the visual cue for his video.
In other words, Kanye stomped all over two of my most favorite things in the world, Daft Punk and Akira, in a desperate attempt to maintain relevancy in the world. - majeo, on 10/11/2007, -9/+46Ok, just to make sure I have this straight:
1.) Poorly modify somebody else's song.
2.) Sing poorly over it a repeating stanza based on somebody else's quote.
3.) Play it over a video poorly ripping off somebody else's movie.
4.) Receive volumes more adulation and money than the authors of all the original source material.
Did I miss anything? - Fire4Effect, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38"TETSUOOOOOOOOOOO!"
"KANYEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
Almost works...... - Godlesswanderer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+30I was waiting for a huge Kanye West to start bleeding milk.
- 0zzy, on 10/11/2007, -12/+38This song would be awesome if it didn't have Kayne West singing on top of it, he ruins it. :]
- Roger, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28Story doesn't even mention that its a remix of a Daft Punk song.
Why did they agree to this? - lordtyros, on 10/11/2007, -7/+28OH *****! Music videos borrow from other media!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23Akira is the one anime movie everyone should have seen at least once..even if you don't like anime. It's like not having seen My Fair Lady or The Lion King. Even if you don't like musicals or Disney movies, you have to have seen one of those just to say "yeah I saw it" because it is a classic.
- ShadySpace, on 10/11/2007, -18/+38Man, haven't ever seen this much Kanye hate. He's one of the few mainstream rappers out right now who actually has a brain in his head, or at least one that's more concerned with ***** beyond bitches and money. He's progressive, socially conscious and intelligent, lyrics reflect as such. Try to judge an artist past what songs of their's they play on MTV the most.
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23"..do anything for a Klondike
I'd do anything for a blonde dyke"
Lol master lyricist. - robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Too bad Kanye West is the biggest crybaby bitch the world has ever known.
- garamon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19Well then go listen to Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk. All Kanye did was take that awesome song and rap lame ass lyrics over it.
- zwilliams, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16You have broken rules #1 and #2.
Anonymous shall not forgive. - FatherG, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16There are some things that you'd be better off not knowing the "in joke". Trust me, it's a good thing.
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17I have no idea what pedobear means but in an effort to remain hip and relevant I'm going to digg you up.
- frode!, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I banish him to Hoboken New Jersey.
- mindsnare, on 10/11/2007, -12/+22Kanye is a first class *****, he's taken a perfectly good song from daft punk and fakked it up with his annoying ass hip hop style. And then he goes and rips off scenes from a movie... *****
- dotdan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10KANEDAAAAAA!!!
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+9We can only hope.
- Fatticus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Whatever happened to original material?
- browwiw, on 10/16/2007, -2/+11Kayne didn't stop tank main gun rounds or laser beams with his brain powers. No digg.
- newanalog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I can...and I do
- jhaks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Tetsuo didn't really explode though; he became a giant flesh blob. I hope that happens to Kanye. Like Tetsuo, Kanye West is a big whiny ass that lets all his power go to his head.
- crugg, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13where is the originality?
- Yout, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I was hoping to see him turn into a giant, tumorous mutant before being annihilated by a nuclear explosion. Thread does not deliver.
- constana, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Hiphop began with artists rapping over samples of existing songs. When hiphop first started DJs would play samples and people would rap over the beat. Sampling is a major part of hiphop so its wrong to diss Kanye for effectively using a sample.
The challenge for a hiphop produce is actually to turn an obscure sample into a hot track. Lots of other products could have used this daft punk song but they weren't able to. - Jerryskid02, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I agree sir, why Daft Punk decided to go along with this collaboration is beyond me. And given that Akira is my favorite anime movie, I must say the medical examination scene was cool looking. But still.....It's Kannot Standya West.
- lunarworks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Wow. Breaking news. Rap artist uses scenes from twenty year old (admittedly great but overrated) anime movie in his video. Totally worthy of diggs...
Didn't Michael Jackson and his non-ugly sister use clips from Akira in "Scream" ten years ago?
Matthew Sweet beat them all to it in the early '90s... - Schmidtopolis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The thing is, the old school originators would DIG (no pun intended) for samples, from old reggae/funk/soul... whatever. Kanye just walks to the local CD shop (cause Kanye stopped using vinyl long ago), hears a beat he thinks is fresh, and throws money at the guys who made it, so he can re-make it. This is less sampling, and more just re-hashing. And by-the-by, this isn't an obscure sample, pretty much none of Kanye's samples are. Just because the original sample wasn't heard by hip hop heads, doesn't make it obscure. The original song was in ***** rotation on MTV for christs sake.... I'm just a hater though.
- Monkeman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7To all the ***** saying he ripped off Daft Punk:
he didn't rip them off. He sampled the song. Same way Daft Punk's Discovery is made up almost entirely of samples. Everything but the solo in Aerodynamic is some other song, played backwards. The guitar lead in Robot Rock is taken from some funk song in the seventies. Crescendolls is basically just a sped up version of another song.
And I don't even like Kanye West. I do like the song, though. I'm not gonna act like something sucks just because, holy *****, a rapper did it. Rap can be good too. - skull24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Daft Punk is in the video, ass!
- Microfoot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7If it makes things fair, the Daft Punk song also sampled another song.
- SuperCujo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7The fact that Daft Punk were in on it seems to have escaped you hasn't it?
- Markpdotcom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7And this new "record" too... Although, slowing down Daft Punk's record and rapping over it is hardly creative.
- DJMajickman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8his production skills!!!
Please this is Daft Punk's production skills. He probably had nothing to do with it. - SuperCujo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It wasn't Daft Punk's either. They sampled someone elses song to make "Bigger, Faster, Stronger".
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Rules_Of_The_Internet
- Myotis85, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Dugg for the greatest Anime movie of all time... Akira FTW
- sparql, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7You are a ***** idiot for thinking Kayne is "one of the best things to happen to hip-hop in a long, long time", especially where there are a ton of AMAZING acts out there who deserve much more respect. Aesop Rock, EL-P, People Under The Stairs, Dalek, Beans, Saul Williams, Zion I, CunninLynguists... Just to name a few.
If you're going to act so knowledgeable, try referring to something other than what you saw on MTV. - shibainu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6george bush dont care about japanese people
- kylev, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11Not even musically; he's 0-for-2 on this one. He took the visuals from Akira, and the beats from Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" off "Discovery". Daft Punk are the two robots you periodically see pushing buttons in the video. Truly, there is nothing new in the universe.
- simcjt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6dude that's not cool i live there
- Miyazaki, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Daft Punk are in the video as well. A sample of their song is used, and they are actually in as well I mean. They are the robot looking guys throughout it.
- Okari, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Rule 1 and 2.
- JoshVanDanger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That video is lamer than an AMV...seriously, make your ***** music but don't stink up a good movie in the process...
- gbro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Yup, he's the only "artist" I know who ruins everything he touches.
