- TheCamino, on 06/29/2009, -9/+83 Musicians instead of drum machines? The man is amazing!
Next stop, I bet he's going to do this thing where instead of just shouting into a microphone, he's going to go all crazy with his lyrics, and try to match pitch, or really get out there and make a whole new melody with his voice.
Now that's freaking genius! - Revovisionary, on 06/29/2009, -3/+58Yeah maybe a little autotune would livin' him up.
- sx66gns, on 06/29/2009, -1/+49He just told all the T-Pain auto tune ***** to die in a fire but in a more African American rapper way.
And I thought it was great. - kleezy, on 06/29/2009, -6/+48He was a little flat on the chorus.
- hipstergrifter, on 06/29/2009, -0/+40Aside from this performance, the Awards were really disorganized & kind of bad :(
- thatdiabeticguy, on 06/29/2009, -5/+45My name is HOV
H to the OV
I used to move snowflakes by the oz - ghostie, on 06/29/2009, -2/+40I gotta say, it's refreshing to see a rapper perform with a full live band, rather than a DJ spinning an instrumental track of his song. Also, it doesn't sound like he's using pre-recorded backing tracks for the chorus. Definitely agree that the sax is out of tune. It's unfortunate, but I'd rather hear a true live performance with a few mistakes than the typical pre-recorded, lip-synced BS that passes for a show these days...
- brownytravis, on 06/29/2009, -4/+36Well, they don't discriminate against other races or say that black people are the best and everyone else sucks. It's simply entertainment based on what many of that race *may* enjoy. Along the lines of HBO Latino, which sometimes shows movies in English but with all Hispanic actors. Hm. With that said, I'm partially black, but BET isn't my cup of grape drink.
- logstaa, on 06/29/2009, -0/+30Sweet! He got Michael Bay to direct his backdrop.
- Malik112099, on 06/29/2009, -12/+38I fail to see the significance of this performance.
- bigteebo, on 06/29/2009, -0/+25How about death of lip syncing live performances? That also is a musical crime.
- ayeroxor, on 06/29/2009, -3/+26Listening to the radio, it makes me wonder what every single hip hip artist on the ***** PLANET would sound like WITHOUT autotune.
Autotune is so played out, if I never hear another artist use it for the rest of my life, I won't miss it. - commonground, on 06/29/2009, -2/+23Jay-Z's MTV Unplugged album with The Roots is just incredible... all live & sounding better than on record
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -2/+23BET as a network is disorganized and kind of bad. Don't blame it on hip-hop.
- mountain1488, on 06/29/2009, -1/+22I would argue that its racist because there could never be a station called White Entertainment Television, WET, but then I realize that 90% of all tv stations are already like that.
- combatchuck, on 06/29/2009, -1/+21No. There are some awesome hip hop artists out there. You just don't hear very much from them because they're not commercial. Atmosphere, Sage Francis, MF Doom, Bomani (the "read a book" guy)... There are a lot of better rappers out there than what you hear on the radio.
Edit: I'm a metal head, and I even like these guys. - wild, on 06/29/2009, -3/+21He can call himself Frank, but he is no Sinatra.
- staticneuron, on 06/29/2009, -1/+19I think Jay-Z song was meant for the rappers and not the R&B artists, besides Jamie Foxx only used auto tune in a handful of songs and everyone already knows he can sing.
The point about auto tune is that it is being abused by some, not for stylistic purposes but because they have no talent. - geodebug, on 06/29/2009, -0/+17Having programming that targets a particular culture or taste isn't racist, silly.
Besides, there's plenty of all-white entertainment channels: CMT, SPEED TV, The History Channel (except in February), and the one that gives the current time/date. - ayeroxor, on 06/29/2009, -12/+28Well, think about it. It's awards for rap and hip hop...
- kubedawg, on 06/29/2009, -1/+16I thought it was pretty funny that Jamie Foxx introduced him considering Jamie uses Auto Tune on his songs.
- im2emo4myshrt, on 06/29/2009, -0/+15Daft Punk's "One more time" is a perfect example.
- brownytravis, on 06/29/2009, -4/+19I don't see myself watching the entire award show but I thought this performance was great. I think the song is catchy; I even have it in my music collection, but there's something about bragging about your millions and dissing other artists that irks me about some rappers. With that said, I thought 2m 51s was awesome in terms of on-screen visuals.
- drunkmuppet, on 06/30/2009, -0/+15Mirror : http://www.missinfo.tv/index.php/new-video-jay-z-d ...
- Halsfield, on 06/29/2009, -3/+17There is nothing inherently wrong with auto-tune when it is used as a tool and a not a crutch.
- fightinirish08, on 06/29/2009, -1/+15I guess even back then you could call me
CEO of the ROC - enthreeoh, on 06/29/2009, -2/+15MJ was a rapper?
- svensksvamp, on 06/29/2009, -2/+15Dugg for being married to Beyoncé.
- combatchuck, on 06/29/2009, -0/+13No. It's just a TV channel. You're reading way too much into it. It's a channel with a target audience. Much like Spike, G4, Discovery, WE, Nickelodeon...
- bcroghan, on 06/29/2009, -2/+15about time there was a rap song that actually meant something
- gvoakes, on 06/29/2009, -3/+16Tell 'em Hov
- pathouston22, on 06/29/2009, -5/+17Jay Z is one of the few mainstream hip hop artists that actually has rapping skills, good lyrics, good beats, and no autotune *****.
- im2emo4myshrt, on 06/29/2009, -3/+13No one disses a drummer for not being melodic, just like no one disses a rapper for not being melodic. But, drummers are often considered the least musical/talented in a group, just like rappers are considered less musical/talented then singers. What people really don't like about rappers is how pathetic the things they are saying are. If you are just going to talk please at least have quality lyrics.
- bitcloud, on 06/29/2009, -2/+12because you're not feeling persecuted... just self righteous...
- liljay2k, on 06/29/2009, -1/+11fresh out the frying pan into the fire,
i'm the music man's number one supplier. - kurupttek, on 06/29/2009, -1/+11Flyer/flier than a piece of paper bearin my name
Got the hottest chick in the game wearin my chain - brownytravis, on 06/29/2009, -0/+10Completely agreed. A rapper performing with a drummer, any sort of instrument, or full live band in the background is always refreshing to me. I say this after being a part of too many concerts where this isn't the case.
- bubbameister33, on 06/29/2009, -0/+9Dugg for grape drink.
- Th0rus, on 06/29/2009, -2/+11I'm not huge on rap, but Jay Z is a guy I can get behind. He pretty much just called everyone on their *****. I'm sick of all the annoying auto-tune *****. The ringtone rappers like Souljaboy and Flo-rida are in high supply and it's gone to far, thanks Jay Z.
- Mei2Jason, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8.....a rendition which is PURPOSEFULLY done off-key as a way of saying "fcuk autotune"
- Mei2Jason, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Heard Jay-Z speak in length about this on Hot97. Jay-Z said his problem isn't with T-Pain, or even Kanye for that matter. It's with all the rappers who use autotune as a crutch--who clearly wouldn't be successful without it, and with those simply trying to imitate T-Pain. T-Pain is an innovator for bringing the effect to the mainstream, and uses it effectively and creates catchy melodies. He is a singer, not a rapper. On the other hand, Kanye has proven that he doesn't need autotune to make a hit with his CDs (besides 808's and Heartbreaks), and Jay Z feels that the melodies Kanye created in songs like "Heartless" would be hits if performed without the effect.
- justaskyourmom, on 06/29/2009, -1/+9That right, HOV, not D.O.C, but similar to them lettters
No one can do it better - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -14/+22How is BET not racist again?
- drmangrum, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Autotune is the stupidest music fad ever. It was a cool gimmick for 1 or 2 songs, but when everyone starts using it, it's time to kill it.
- misterparry, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8Jay-Z is a little late. I already brought Versace shades back into style.....
- CLucas916, on 06/29/2009, -2/+10MJ used autotune?
- Soniti, on 06/29/2009, -0/+7To your comment above, Souljah Boy had this response:
"YAHHH TRICK YAHHH BOOOGALABLLAAAHHH BOOOGGALABLAAAAHHH"
And that ***** went Platinum. There is no hope for hip hop. - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+8Jay-Z has always been a tight lyricist. Over the years, he's really dumbed-down his music to stay in touch with the younger hip-hop crowd which in my opinion is complete bulls***. How can Jay-Z move any units and stay on the charts when garbage like Soulja Boy Tell Em (WTF) has a #1 hit song about ejaculating on a woman's back and throwing the sheet over her. WTF.
BTW... those of you that are confused might wanna do some "hip-hop" research on Soulja Boy before blaring it from your cars. - inactive, on 06/29/2009, -1/+8That's a Frank White reference BTW.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -2/+9don't forget CSPAN
