- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Makes sense, today's music isn't really that great and people don't want to listen to what their parents listen to. So just go back to the year 1992, when a lot of great music was released.
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. --Socrates (470–399 BC)

- jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Before the debate on who was the better artist, or entertainer starts....
I don't think there is any realistic way of comparing the 2. They both had a HUGE impact on the respective generations. But there is no way of putting a number to it aside from record sales. But then there is an issue with those figures also. Elvis selling 1 million records can not be compared to Cobain selling 1 million records. It was 2 completely different generations.
I know it's not as fun as having an all-out argument about who was the better artist/entertainer, but I think this is best left at "they were both extremely influential, and both very talented".
Of course if someone does want an argument, they could suggest that one or both were no talent wankers.... - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't forget, one has been dead for almost 30 years. The other one about 10. If Elvis just recently dropped to the #2 dead celebrity earner... that's still incredibly impressive.
- ChiefUCF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't believe people are digging spider-man down for that comment...Cobain had some talent, but Cobain wasn't - and never will be - the King of Rock and Roll. There's no business for Cobain impersonators, is there?
- Mikecol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Basically all of alt-rock has been Cobain impersonators since Nirvana. So yes, it's a thriving business
- windwaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow. Elvis wasn't even that original; all he really did was rip off Chuck Berry and get away with it (because Berry was black).
I'm glad Cobain is higher. I'm not even a big Nirvana fan, but come on; the idiots who're posting above me are just teenagers who have no idea, and call his music "generic 90's rock". They CREATED the 90's rock sound, don't blame them for the crappy impersonations.
"I hope you're not seriously suggesting that Cobain was a more important or bigger musical icon than Elvis. I'm no big Elvis fan but that thought is simply ridiculous."
Elvis is the hipster response here. I'm a journalist (for Rolling Stone), and I think it's fair to say that you're just copping out here without knowing any of the real story. Cobain was original, Elvis WAS an impersonator. The only person who knows anything so far is jiggawoot; they were both hugely influential. I'm simply pointing out how one simply ripped off Chuck Berry and other 50/60's pop acts, the other was original (please tell me someone who Cobain blatantly ripped off, whereas most of Elvis's discography is the I IV V chord progression).
Jesus, the misinformation you digg kids put out in the comments is amazing. - spider-man, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I hope you're not seriously suggesting that Cobain was a more important or bigger musical icon than Elvis. I'm no big Elvis fan but that thought is simply ridiculous.
Maybe we should compare the number of musical successes the two had. Maybe comparing GoldPlatinum albums. - Migalicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ChiefUCF
There's not going to be a business for Elvis impersonators once the baby boomers die off either. - newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4who cares?
- jessekanner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This little news blip is due more to an accident of economics than any sort of cultural trumping. Kurt surpassed Elvis due to one transaction that took place earlier this year - the sale of his publishing rights by Courtney to Primary Wave. That deal was worth either $50 million (or $200 million, depending on who you ask).

It turns out that none of the Nirvana songs have ever been licensed for use in films or commercials. There's a lot of pent up value there. The sale was a whopper based on a very long-range expectation of return on investment. I expect Elvis to regain his top spot next year. - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Yes, if only this wasn't on the front page from the original source JUST HOURS AGO: http://digg.com/celebrity/Forbes_Top_Earning_Dead_Celebrities_List
Use the search feature. It's AMAAAAAZZING! (Marked as duplicate.)
AND to make matters worse, your description is inaccurate; Cobain has only been the top earning celeb when counting earnings from the past twelve months. Elvis has decades on Cobain, so it wouldn't be a fair game. - pepe1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0
Elvis is number 2? To Cobain? Now I'm really beginning to feel old. - bultaco370, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Same... No talent, no innovation, he just made a few generic 1990's rock songs and killed himself.

- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I blame the myspace/hot topic generation
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4I wasn't referring to the title, I was trying to make a joke using the lyrics of Baba O'Riley which is a great song. IMO The Who are in the same league as Cobains' Nirvana.
Its not like I quoted Nickelback. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3How about jesus?
Hes sold more books than anyone (except ikea appently?)
Hes also been famous for the last 2000 years, will we remeber elvis or kurt in that time? I doubt it. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4So basically today's music is for a teenage wasteland?
And yes I know thats a song by The Who, but its good as well.
