- pepshai, on 05/06/2008, -1/+18/agreed What Trent is doing is amazing. He deserves so much more credit than everyone is giving him. Leading the way, and doing it well, Trent is a legend already.
- clearside, on 05/06/2008, -7/+22Its great to see these people finally taking some notice of Trent's "awareness". I think that he deserves the front cover of some/all of the trades too. Billboard has done a terrible job of giving him a half page article which he shared with another band when Ghosts came out. TR DESERVES THE COVER! He is changing the landscape of this whole pathetic record business but yet these no talent industry whores like Mariah Carey and Coldplay make all the headlines. Its *****. Trent Reznor is bringing us into the new era. Its great to be apart of it! Thanks NIN! Its an exciting time to be a NIN fan!
www.myspace.com/downtoacrawl - kingmanic, on 05/06/2008, -0/+5Quake is as much to blame as Drugs for the time between records in the old days.
- kingmanic, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4Signing a contract only requires a pulse as even literacy isn't required. See all the thousands of bands that got ***** over by their first contracts. To anticipate how your fans want their music and works towards delivering it in that format in a way that can make you money takes intelligence and awareness.
- Stormwern, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4What he’s doing doesn’t just take balls, awareness and intelligence, it takes genuine humility and respect for the fans.
- JasonMath, on 05/06/2008, -1/+4Here is the blog post that Ian Rogers refers to in the article: http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/20 ...
- celotil, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3With several of the comments being about how "crap" Reznor's latest albums have been, I wonder if any of you had a look at the wikipedia link mentioned in the article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campaign_timeline_of_ ...
There's no way you could bring out an album, perform at concerts, and work on a campaign like that (I followed every on-line link, read through most of the text, and even watched the whole video at Open Resistance) without it influencing future work, and when I think about it from a broader perspective, ambient music is what the world makes, and we're ***** on the world.
Go outside, listen to the birds, the wind, the waves, the backbeat of your own heart. That's the ambient music of life. That's not crap, that's real. Notice the discord created by cars, airplanes, trains, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, etc.
Took me a while to notice that the cover art of Year Zero is a hand reaching from the sky - The Presence.
Anyone religious should be scared that you're not living up to your god's expectations. Anyone not religious should be worried we're past the tipping point for our planet - socially, economically, politically, and geographically.
It's not just music, ambient or otherwise, it's a message.
"WAKE UP AND GIVE A *****" - Farik, on 05/06/2008, -2/+4Since when was the article talking about Radiohead?
- AutomaticTLC, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Trent made over a million dollars off "Ghosts" in the first few days of its release and who knows how much he's made since -- even if the man wanted to release this album for free and not even release a physical product, I don't think it'd hurt him financially at this point. You're an idiot.
- forgiste, on 05/06/2008, -2/+4so ambient = crap? I loved In Rainbows
- Artemisian, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2What, you mean Reznor hasn't just been pulling a Radiohead? Gee whiz mister, that's what every headline I ever read tells me to think!
- Witchboy, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3Reznor is obviously a leader here, but the only people who *aren't* in favor of digital distribution are either a) artists who are under-informed about how much money they stand to make once there's no middle man soaking 70% of every dollar, or b) part of the problem (ie, the middle men). This is such an efficient, obvious move: Content flowing straight from the author to the reader.
- craprock, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2I liked Ghosts more than In Rainbows.
- Genetico, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3Oh what would Digg ever do nowadays without Trent Reznor and Barrack Obama. If they found some ungodly way of making a baby together I think Digg.com would feel it's very own digg effect.
- Farik, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2And there is nothing wrong with Ghosts.
- kingmanic, on 05/06/2008, -1/+3You do know Ghost is basically 'ambient' instrumental.
- SpectralSounds, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2You get more coverage when you are a big media conglomerate, lining the pockets of whatever media outlet you want to advertise you. Coldplay and Mariah Carey get the headlines because of their record labels and the people who are making money off of them. How many people make money off of Trent with his distribution model?
- ShempRider, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1I can't disagree with you here...in fact, you're probably correct.
It's a marketing approach:
"here's a free album (free music from the ARTIST--even if it sucks-- will create a "buzz").
Build, if not maintain, your fan base.
Generate interest in projects that will translate to dollars in the future.
Radiohead's approach wasn't dissimilar.
Until file sharing goes away. - ToolyMcShedder, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Ian Rogers is very in tune with how the music industry needs to change to work for in the changing environment. He really gets what music fans want and how to deliver it to them. This is the guy that should be in charge of the record industry.
- purelithium, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Am I the only one who didn't get anything after I submitted my Token?
- inactive, on 05/06/2008, -3/+4Haha, I like how random people become authorities in Diggland just because they are in a vague position of celebrity and say something diggers agree with.
- ShempRider, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3Trent Reznor is so much cooler than that hag who polluted P2P with her "What the ***** do you think you're doing?" loserness.
- Farik, on 05/06/2008, -3/+4Damnit, I dugg you before realizing there was a stealth myspace link which, as everyone knows, qualifies as an insta-bury.
- Infidelcastr0, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Thanks, Trent.
- Witchboy, on 05/06/2008, -2/+3In Rainbows is awesome.
- warplayer, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Do you both dislike this new album? I think it's pretty solid.
- BSDaemon, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2Well that's what happens when somebody actually does something worth reading about.
- warplayer, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Wow, I never thought about that. Good point.
- ShempRider, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I haven't heard it. I only admire his marketing techniques. That's it.
This will be my first download of NIN. Ever.
I bought 2 NIN CDs back in the early/mid 90s and liked their sound.
Having said that, and without even listening to this free album, i think the guy's read the writing on the wall: welcome to the new distribution.
And I'm not a fanboy (which, apparently, gets your comments buried here on Digg).
So, until I listen to the album ... I don't know.
But my friends tell me it's cool. - Infidelcastr0, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Obama should make Trent head of the FCC.
- indigae, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2you must stop trying to perpetuate an imaginary war between nin and radiohead. both are doing great things these days, yet they are doing them in two completely different time zones, so... knock it off.
also, there's much more ambience on 'the slip' than there is on 'in rainbows.' "corona radiata" anyone? - heroicraptor, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2Except Trent isn't a racist *****.
- BSDaemon, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1"The clouds will part and the sky cracks open and 'god' himself will reach his ***** arm through, just to push you down, just to hold you down"
- BSDaemon, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I agree with you. While I do like it, I do enjoy it... I still long for something like Broken. (Not that I want a Broken part 2 or something, but you get the idea..)
I'm finding with the new music, I really need to be in the mood for it, whereas the older stuff I'm -always- in the mood for. Trents new music is beautiful, but sometimes I don't want beautiul.. I want raw, angry, pain, despair...
Your comment doesn't deserve to be dugg down, its your opinion, and you're not alone. - kingmanic, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1You know when a Casino comps you a room? They are giving something away. But somehow they keep doing it. Why? Because their business model can accept that short term loss because of their pre calculated odds that an extra night may draw more then the cost of the room from that customer. For all your swearing and ranting you fail to grasp much of the things you are screaming about. For instance it's "Economics 101" as economy 101 is not a common course and would imply a course about large scale economic activity when you really seem to be talking about business vs the market. For Trent this freebie album builds goodwill which then can be monetized later. Like playing a charity concert or giving away free merch at some evens or signing merch and auctioning off for charity. It all builds good will which can be monetized if you're clever.
- SkinnyPuppy, on 05/07/2008, -2/+2While I applaud his marketing creativity, Its just unfortunate that his last few albums weren't very good.
PHM is in my top 40 albums of all time. It's too bad that he's been on a downward spiral since then (pun intended).
Trent, your music is boring the ***** out of me. I might be getting older, but dammit man...make us shake our fists, heads, and hearts again. I can still rock. I know you can too. - Sirchadofwick, on 05/08/2008, -0/+0this album has no leftovers. the songs were recorded with robin finck who just rejoined the band again a couple months ago. the album was released most likely hours after it was mastered. so you are wrong. btw, the album is amazing.
- inactive, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1yea but the problem i have is that he released an album like a few months ago and now hes releasing another one. Its great to have free albums from well known artist, but please make them quaility titles with soul put into them. it seems Trent just took some left over songs from his other albums and put them together for this album. i dont know, that's just my thought process on how you can release stuff so quickly in a short amount of time between albums.
- metaliq, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1"Rainbows"?
- AutomaticTLC, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1I don't think Coldplay have gotten much press about their new single...
- Sikl, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0hell, i couldve said that. anyone that has any common sense and (real) musical taste knows Trent is the MAN.
- AutomaticTLC, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Ambient = Love
- FatOldSun66, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0give me a break, artists dont make money off album sales anymore, its all ticket sales and merchandise, so while your getting your free music dont forget to pick up a $25 tshirt and $15 hat of the record business reinovators. Once Trent and Radiohead start playing free tours, then they will receive my full acknowledgment.
- supernaut06, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Take a deep breath before you have yourself a stroke.
- D180, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0Listen to it again, it didn't have me right away either. The second play-through was amazing.....
- uglypercy, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1This is the same Ian Rogers that used to date Winona Ryder, but (he claims) dumped her because she was too dumb to hang out with.
- XmenArt, on 05/06/2008, -1/+1I love that more and more sites like http://www.volumevote.com are embracing the free music model to promote artists. It's not like money can't be made with free distribution.
- codaofchoice, on 05/06/2008, -2/+1You're not appreciated until it is too late to be appreciated. It's more sincere that way :P
- rocknje, on 05/07/2008, -1/+0You are entitled to your opinion and that is appreciative. I am not trying to start anything here, but you are totally wrong. I think the music Trent put out over the past few years is really good. As with Trent's music you need to give it a chance. Listen to it more than once. For example, with the album with teeth at first I didn't like most of the songs. Love is not enough and the collector for example. I can tell you after giving it a chance and time, I really love both of these songs. You really need to listen to it more than once and give it time and chance to really appreciate them. I think all his albums are great.
