- lilydustbin, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1Sure okay, but it's a step they should have taken a long, long time ago... I worked at a major label in the digital marketing department and I remember being told we weren't allowed to create MySpace pages for our artists or solicit mp3 blogs because there was no way for us to "license" the music. Of course times have changed and all the labels have relationships with the big social networking sites and mp3 blogs now. In any case, that initial refusal to play in a new space came from marketing and technology "experts" who didn't understand the tools or the emerging landscape (uh, Napster?) ... and what's happening now is that instead of investing in senior staff knowledgable in social media, they're bringing on junior people out of college and university who may have Facebook profiles but don't necessarily understand how to effectively navigate this delicate space. They're always too many steps behind and I don't think they'll ever catch up...
- goflyers, on 07/31/2008, -0/+1unfortunately you owe metallica 1 cent per digg for using 3 english words that they put together in one of their songs.
- dissolva, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1LMAO. nice proof of concept.
- ImagineNation, on 07/30/2008, -0/+1Sad but true- when you've mismanaged your "relationship" with the very people who keep you in business (the music consumers/fans) and don't stay in touch with their needs, wants, as
well as the economic changes in the marketplace...you'll quickly be out of touch. On a positive tip- Sony/BMG's launch of the new Bob Dylan site (www.bobdylan.com) and allowing fans a chance to receive a DRM free mp3 of a new track off the forthcoming boxset was a step in the
right direction.
