- nxtw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This guide is sort of lame... first it tells you to use --alt-preset standard, which encodes at an average of approx. 200k bitrate, then tells you to enforce a 320k bitrate... so basically, you're overriding your own settings.
The author also tells you to ONLY use ID3 1.1, for no apparent reason.
320kbit VBR is not possible. 320kbit is the maximum MP3 bitrate, and since VBR means VARIABLE bit rate, the bitrate can't vary and still be 320kbit average.
cheeseonstuf, what do you have against CBR? If you're going to say it sucks, please explain why.
Soave, if you're using iTunes to make MP3s, be warned that the MP3 encoder in iTunes is believed to be inferior compared to others (specifically LAME). http://www.rjamorim.com/test/mp3-128/results.html
Submitter + article author (if they aren't the same person) aren't very knowledgeable in this subject. - animefx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3no offense to the poster, but your changing your own settings... it doesn't make any sense. there is also no reason to go id3 1.1, almost every software and hardware player can use id3 2.0 just fine. not to mention 1.1 doesn't have all possible genres, and a limitation on the lenght of song titles, album names, etc...
cdex + lame is the best way to go, encoding at vbr isn't too bad i would set the minimum bitrate at 192 and maximum at 320 kbps. usually i just encode my music based on how well i like the song or album, the best of the best gets apple lossless for my ipod, and music that is still way up there on my list gets 256 kbps cbr or 320 kbps. everything else i encode at 160 kbps. - mu-sly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People still use MP3? OGG all the way!!
- ParityError, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Although antiquated, the FAQ for the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.* Usenet newsgroups (http://www.mp3-faq.org/) is still a pretty good guide to CD ripping and MP3 encoding.
I use EAC for CD ripping, LAME for MP3 encoding, and ID3 Tagit for mass ID3v1 & ID3v2 tagging. Seems like a lot of extra steps but I've been encoding MP3s in this manner for a few years now. - Dirtydog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea OGG is the only way to fly.
Dirtydog - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First off, the 320 you select in EAC does not do anything, when selecting lossless codecs, this option remains for some reason as well. The alt preset standard is all that is enforced. For me, EAC w/ correct offset --> FLAC all the way.
- nik707, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1pls explain...
- TheGreatBelow, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1v0 vbr or bust
- nik707, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1I always find 160 weird, I don't know why but when I encode it 160 with lame its louder and tin-ny sounding..???
Is this just me? - Zachariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like Audiograbbers's UI. But, I like the thorough descriptions in the Ubernet.org ÜberStandard at http://www.ubernet.org/index.php?p=UberStandard which uses EAC instead.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm not that big of an audiophile (if at all - I just happen to be able to tell/get annoyed at anything encoded at less than 128 kbps) and as such, I use Winamp to rip mp3s - I think its mp3 encoder is pretty damn good - 192 kbps CBR is the sweet spot for me. The audio is high enough quality while still letting me fit enough songs on my mp3 players. I just wish any of them could understand ogg.
And yeah, this guide is kinda lame - I was kinda confused about "variably encoding" at 320 kbps - seeing as you can't encode any higher with any encoder I know of. - one_abm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Try the "UberStandard" guide to ripping. If you chose to go with MP3 format give this standard a try. http://www.ubernet.org/index.php?p=UberStandard
EAC in secure mode for CD to DA extraction.
LAME for MP3 Encoding
The EAC profiles on the site make it easy to setup. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like FLAC for those high quality rips.
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I am ashamed to say I now use windows media player to rip CD's. 10 lets you rip them straight to MP3's and it is the fastest program I could find. I used CDEX before that but it is so slow in comparison. I wish I found an open source program that rips as fast or faster.

- syfenx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0somebody gave me the instructions, i just posted it, it was from awhile back.. just thought somebody could use it..
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Only for those who like to clog up their Hard Drives with lo-hi music files. If you want to do rip CD the REAL way the Right Way, Use Flac. Its that simple.
- whitesanjuro, on 11/11/2007, -2/+1mp3 sucks, use FLAC. people who can't tell the difference are peasants or deaf or both.
patrickweber -> lossy compression implies you aren't an audiophile - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nxtw, cheeseonstuf was talking about VBR, not CBR. And I think you explained why to at least question the advice on using 320kb VBR.
Another reason is that some (older?) players have a problem with
VBR playback IIRC. - BenStockwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'll stick with 320k AAC
- dAMIAn78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I find that Musicmatch does a nice job, is fairly quick, and organizes nicely. To each their own.
- cheeseonstuf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1DONT RIP VBR. Rip CBR. please. VBR sucks.
- motionblur, on 11/11/2007, -3/+1FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC FLAC
Am I making myself clear? Death to mp3. - patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Yuk. Always go with 320kbps AAC. It's wonderful especially for audiophiles like me :).
- Soave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Eh, I just go with iTunes.
