Fans prepare to bury me - santiago1, on 11/23/2008, -22/+122 Who cares, Rose is a ***** idiot and Guns an' Roses died quite awhile ago.
- JakeBC, on 11/23/2008, -3/+95Axl Rose is not Guns and Roses. Just as Paul McCartney would not be The Beatles if he were to release an album without John, George and Ringo.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -22/+107axl rose is still a dick
- Goshyouidiot, on 11/23/2008, -6/+83Ok, it took time. We all know that. But after reading this I don't know much more about ''How Axl Rose Spent All That Time''
- RocketGib, on 11/23/2008, -35/+98Bury me PLZ!
- krnldmp, on 11/23/2008, -49/+101Axl Rose is a butt fag.
- mattyboy555, on 11/23/2008, -1/+48No! you can't tell me what to do!
- dudefaceguyman, on 11/23/2008, -6/+44I've been listening to the album a lot lately. Before the final releases I listened to the demo's a lot. The article is completely right about overproducing.
I really liked the latest Chinese Democracy demo leak before the final release. It didn't have him doing backing vocals to himself; instead it retained his regular voice that would transition throughout the song to classic Axl screams. It was great and kept me interested. Unfortunately he fell back to mainstream industrial sound with the backing vocals on the final release. In Shackler's Revenge it works, Chinese Democracy? Not as much for me.
Otherwise the rest of the Album is quite diverse when you break it down. Yes it's a bit overproduced and some of the notes are "too perfect" which loses a bit of its edge for me. Fortunately after a few listens it really grows on you. Seriously. First listen it sounds pretty mediocre but I'm finding I like some songs a lot more now.
If you just try and think of this as some new band instead of comparing it to old Guns N Roses it's a stellar album. - inactive, on 11/23/2008, -5/+42The Howard Hughes comparison doesn't work because when Hughes delivered on his promises, he delivered. Hughes was always hungry, and didn't steal other people's work and call them his own. His projects were always his vision, and he hired the most capable people he could find to build that vision.
Axl. Rose is more like that guy who boasts about how he has a huge penis, and sleeps with tons of women - yet you never see him with one. Then he hooks up with the skank at the party, lasts 20 seconds, and is revealed to have a rather tiny penis.
100% Poser. - asgardshill, on 11/23/2008, -8/+43I object to the nytimes' characterization of Chinese Democracy as the "Titanic ship" of rock albums.
People still care about the Titanic. - AirRaven, on 11/23/2008, -1/+31You're really going to *hate* books.
- ClevelandBrown, on 11/23/2008, -1/+27Without Slash, Guns and Roses isn't the same.
- T8erT0T, on 11/23/2008, -1/+24"It’s also a shipwreck, capsized by pretensions and top-heavy production."
Hype and delay can only get one so far. 3-D Realms, are you taking notes? - NWVG, on 11/23/2008, -1/+22It's pretty clear it was written and recorded over 17 years as the songs are so different from one another that they don't even sound like the same band let alone the old Guns N' Roses. Some of the songs like Chinese Democracy and Scrapped have remnants of what they used to be, but the rest of the songs are barely listenable. The overproduction of it all reminds me of Metallica's overproduced last two albums. At least I got a free Dr. Pepper out of the release of the album.
- AmazingSteve, on 11/23/2008, -4/+25Being 19 when Appetite was released, it's hard to believe that the baddest ***** band alive has been reduced to nothing more than a fathead with plugs, terrible plastic surgery, and a Howard Hughes complex. You can tell how long this turd took to make because you CAN hear the scope of musical trends over the last decade and a half. I mean it goes from bright shining moments of GnR glory, no doubt laid down 15 or 16 years ago, to oh, here's when Nine in Nails released the Downward Spiral. It's ridiculous. Axl Rose MUST be killed with fire. Nothing else will stop him.
- tomaburque, on 11/23/2008, -5/+22My mini review:
Better than I expected. On the downside there's a lot of "November Rain" type songs with strings and Axl's narcissistic lyrics. But on the upside there's a lot of Buckethead who is a guitar phenom. I think Axl turned Buckethead loose to send a message to Slash, his way of telling his old friend "Suck it". Whatever. Even if you hate Axl Rose, it's still worth downloading, er, I mean buying the album just to hear the amazing guitar work. In the last 17 years Axl's voice has deepened a bit he can still turn on rasp as well has he could on Paradise City. He can sound like a buzz saw cutting meat on pitch and in key when he wants to.
Ignore the lyrics and the 17 years of background drama and I'd give this album 4 out of 5 stars. - dn11, on 11/23/2008, -0/+17It took 17 years for Axl to recover from being knocked off the charts by Kurt Cobain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihyxIMKA2zs - inactive, on 11/23/2008, -1/+17this is digg, there's no chance of anyone paying for music
- chungmaster, on 11/23/2008, -4/+18Actually without Izzy the band fell apart. Izzy pretty much was the band. Everyone else was too drunk or high on heroin to give a *****.
- supferrets, on 11/23/2008, -22/+36The album sucked. Let's move on.
- vuzman, on 11/23/2008, -1/+14What fans?
- blackpanther989, on 11/23/2008, -2/+14HOWEVER trent reznor is NIN.
- napalm9295, on 11/23/2008, -4/+15HE'S WITH BUCKETHEAD!!!
I implore all of you to listen to buckethead. His solos are unbelievable. - kjackelen05, on 11/23/2008, -0/+11It...it was only up in the first place thanks to GnR.
- kurtwinter, on 11/23/2008, -0/+11Let's put this in perspective. I'm 36. I've changed careers 3 times since leaving college, and I have worked and/or gone to school everyday since my 3rd year of high school. I graduated the same year Axl released his last album before Chinese Democracy. I really feel productive today.
- punkcat, on 11/23/2008, -0/+9everyone wants Appetite part 2 but Axl refuses to admit that was his best work and is obsessed with topping himself.
- MisterMAthside, on 11/23/2008, -3/+12He's saying something about democracy while he himself is a dictator.
- tiberone, on 11/23/2008, -0/+9Wings
- vanscott, on 11/23/2008, -0/+9You're just accustomed to top 5, 7, 10 lists from Cracked. Admit it, the internet has made you stupid and you can no longer focus for more that 2 minutes at a time.
- punkcat, on 11/23/2008, -2/+11by obsessing over every note.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -3/+12I said it before, but I like the Album. Sure I wish Slash was there, but he isnt and thats life. I still like most of the songs, even if they are different than Guns N Roses used to sound.
GnR was my favorite band back in the day, and its a shame that they had so few albums. Today I get to go out and buy a new Guns N Roses album, and thats something I never thought I would get to do again. - 83JB, on 11/23/2008, -1/+9anybody had any luck connecting to DrPepper.com for the free Dr. Pepper? It seems to be locked up anytime I go to it... big surprise.
- punkcat, on 11/23/2008, -0/+8congrats, you got his joke.
- AmazingSteve, on 11/23/2008, -1/+9missed a couple of letters, get over it.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -1/+9you're thinking of hotel california
- bearcat8543, on 11/23/2008, -1/+8buckethead left him a while ago, only a couple of the songs will feature his work and will NOT tour.
and if you listen to buckethead simply for the solos then please stop, hes much more diverse and makes you look like a douche. - calcm, on 11/23/2008, -1/+8I saw GNR in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the NMSU football field in 1992. It should have been a great concert with metallica and faith no more. But axl's arrogance was so disgusting and disturbing that I lost all respect for the band and him. In other words Axl killed GNR. I will NOT be buying or downloading this album. Axl is an arrogant, condescending, pompous pig and when I hear the single on satellite radio it sounds like a has-been old man who should go smoke weed in the mountains and enjoy his millions in solitude.
- AmazingSteve, on 11/23/2008, -0/+7Which new guitarist? There's like 5 of 'em on there.
- sockpuppets, on 11/23/2008, -0/+7His dealer and the guy that just woke up from that 17 year coma.
- eth3l, on 11/23/2008, -1/+8That article drones on about as long as it took Rose to write CD. Geez, 2 pages in the NYT?
- Zonks, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6Agreed, I've listened to the album about 20 times through and I really love it.
It isn't GNR, it's Axl Rose. Just listen to it as a separate band entirely. - Syric, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6Now it's time for Duke Nukem Forever.
- borez, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6PInk floyd became Pink Floyd after the loss of Syd Barrett, Fleetwood Mac went through many incarnations, transformations can and do often happen in Music.
- aenima987, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6I bet they purposefully put it on a ***** server.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6If you like Axl (and to me he was what made GnR), I think you will enjoy the album even more.
- jcroweall7, on 11/23/2008, -2/+8The album's a logical continuation of the more epic pieces on the Use Your Illusions albums... frankly, as a whole album, I like it better than either UYI. There aren't any killer individual songs, though, which is problematic. If this had come out in 1998, everyone would be ***** themselves and their moms over it. Axl is definitely 10 years too late (especially in the age of downloading: why go all the way to Best Buy when you can get it off a torrent?), but I also don't think it's a God-awful mess. It took me 2 listens to start connecting to the songs, and I'm sure after a couple more I'll get more into it. Never enough for it to be a true classic, nor ever enough to be worth a 14-year wait, but a good album.
- heysuburbia, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6"An outrageously overblown pop-metal extravaganza, Chinese Democracy feels like a perfect epitaph for all the absurdity and nonsense of the George W. Bush era--one final blowout before Principal Obama takes our idiocy away."
-Spin Magazine - ChineseDemocrat, on 11/23/2008, -1/+6and by the way
Axl Rose just killed Dr. pepper
