- happyfappy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+127I went to a high school for gifted kids, and LOTS of us were pissed off, isolated, and into metal.
We liked porn, too, but that's a different story... - TwilightKing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+85Sorry for comment abuse, but this just needs to be pointed out. From TFA:
"The researchers surveyed 1,057 members of the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth - a body whose 120,000 student members are within the top five per cent academically in the 11-19 age range.
Asked for their favourite type of music, 39 per cent said rock, 18 per cent R&B and 14 per cent pop. Six per cent said heavy metal and a third rated it in their top five genres.
The heavy metal fans in the study had lower self-esteem and more difficulties in family relationships and friendships."
Are you kidding me? 6% does not justify a "link!"

- CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50Queens of the Stone Age isn't metal it's stoner rock.
I love 'em but they don't fit in this context. - keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+48Real metal isnt godsmack and staind.
- itsbecca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37It was Punk for me, but several of my friends were into metal. Another possible headline for this article would be "Anyone with half a brain does not listen to [predominantly] mainstream music".
- tdk2fe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35Wait until you get to a university and people expect you to do actual thinking.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32Is it me or do all nerds/geeks enjoy different types of music?
- kaiser44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31I guess that explains all the retards who watch American Idol.
- VillaStraylight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Dëthkløk forever.
- sucks, on 10/12/2007, -11/+41it would be a more believable study if they defined what exactly they intend by "metal"
i would call ac/dc punk and i would call staind crap - navitatl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Finally it's clear to me. I'm a high school dropout, and I listen to stuff like Bjork.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24I lol'd :)
Those two guys behind her look genuinely terrified :P - solvable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I would have never guessed, "SlayerKid99".

I graduated highschool in 1.5 years, college in 3. Nobel Prize at age 19, millionare by 22. What's my secret? The Locust. - SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21How does this study account for Metallica and Korn's fanbase?
- PresidentSoup, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Dugg for mention of DragonForce!
- happyfappy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Well said. I'd nominate Metallica's "And Justice For All," Slayer's latest "Christ Illusion" and pretty much anything by Rage Against The Machine.

Most punk songs are all just mindless 'down with the government' songs -- hey look, I can generalize too! True enough, many metal bands have rather less-than-stellar lyrics, but I can easily name a plethora of metal bands that all have intelligent and deep lyrics as well - a lot of the less radio-friendly bands deal with subjects such as philosophy, religion (not satan), metaphysics, nature, folklore, etc. One of my favorite bands, Agalloch, has an album that deals entirely with Native American mythology and culture.
Oh, and Slipknot is not metal :P - Winters, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26Kiddie Metal

Well, since you're apparently three years ahead of your class in English, I have no problem nit-picking.
"In addition to all that I'm a proud metalhead!!!"
There should be a comma in that sentence. It should read, "In addition to all that, I'm a proud metalhead!!!" - euphemizeme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Here's another, better assessment of the situation:
People who listen to anything other than rap are gifted.
(I listen to one hell of a lot of rap) - elfprince13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16glossing over the fact that rock scored over 33 percent higher......
- hydrosnowman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Hell, I dugg it for mentioning Iron Maiden.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19low grades aren't really a valid reference of intelligence, a lot of very smart people have low grades in K-12 and post-secondary. In many cases this can be associated with boredom and lack of interest. It doesn't really matter how smart you are, if you don't enjoy economics or biology, your not going to be motivated to learn it and will usually devote your time to learning something you enjoy doing.
Me for example, I don't consider myself a genius, but I have been considered quite intelligent by my peers, I consistently had low grades in K-12, but i spent a lot of my free time reading comp-sci manuals and references, most people i know consider me the "go-to-guy" for all their computer problems(despite my groans every time they do), but i still do not have my HS Diploma.
Currently I'm in college for Comp-sci, I got in because i spoke with the head of my course and was able to prove to him that despite my HS grades, i have a understanding of the fundamentals behind computers and already knew a few languages. I am consistently on the honor roll in college, yet in K-12 i was usually among the bottom half of my class in marks.
Grading students based on multiple choice testing and quantity of work done is not a valid representation of intellect, nor does intellect guarantee success in any industry. Your typical rig pig can explain to you the dynamics of how to extract oil from the earth, usually with a lot of detail, but don't expect them to find your coding error. A construction worker knows how to build a house and keep everything accurate down to an inch, but most of them could cook a gourmet dinner. A programmer can develop a large scale network application, but don't expect them to build you a house, get the construction worker to do that. - bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20My 5 year old son loves Slayer, lamb of god and Mastodon. He used to tap his toes to System when he was a baby. Maybe it's the Motorhead, Maiden and old AC/DC my wife and I used to jam in the car while she was pregnant.
He's in kindergarten and reads at a 5th grade level.
Metal always helped me cope as a kid. Back then it was the NUGE' and KISS was a favorite as well...Granted, the Nuge and Kiss weren't overly "metal" - SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Here's to you, Mr. Unnecessary Personal Anecdote Man.
- trilioth, on 10/12/2007, -15/+29There is nothing better than music with a political message, and usually in protest to bad policy. System of a Down is an all time favorite.
- montyjs, on 11/07/2007, -0/+13I think one thing that a lot of people are missing is that bands like Korn isn't all that metal has to offer. Take into account artists such as Yngwie J. Malmsteen, who draws major influence from Bach and Mozart, or Michael Romeo of Symphony X, who is a virtuoso of guitar. Many metal bands have classical influences, and it would make sense that an intelligent teen would enjoy this because it has all the complexity and intelligence of classical music, and the driving force and aggression of modern rock music.
- satanatnmtedu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It is extremely unlikely that there is a direct relationship here. Lots of smart people like classical. So what? The music you listen to does not define who you are or how intelligent you are. I like metal, but it doesn't make me any smarter (have you listened to the lame lyrics?).
Damn. And, the number who said heavy metal was their favorite was 63 out of 1057. Obviously conclusive results. [/sarcasm] - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Maybe it has to do with the fact that metal goes against the grain of society, and the majority of smarter people can see that mainstream society is full of morons.
- Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I think that the girl's shirt was coming up from behind and the guys saw what lurked beneath it.
- tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Asked for their favourite type of music, 39 per cent said rock, 18 per cent R&B and 14 per cent pop. Six per cent said heavy metal and a third rated it in their top five genres.

Wait. so only 6% said heavy metal was their favorite? And yet the geek community goes "OH! THERE'S A LINK!!!" The study didn't really find anything except that gifted metalheads are also more sociopathic. - starcrunchfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Honestly, the one guy looks like he went to the Jim Carrey school of acting.
- bdurkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The only thing Lars Ulrich proves is that just because you are in a metal band doesn't mean your not a pussy.
- oriolesfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@ maxwelltd
Congratulations on giving a list consisting purely of DEATH metal bands. Believe it or not, there are other genres of metal too! Take Power Metal for instance, which DragonForce fits into perfectly along with Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, etc.
Oh and as an aside, I've seen DragonForce in concert and they're absolute *****. Singer is even worse in real life. - bluetrevian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Rock on! Metal loving geeks unite!
- EviLiu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12They say that classical music makes you smarter. Metal and rock and other similar things are the closest modern music to classical, so in my view, I see a connection.
- ODSTKuk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@ilyad
Thats pretty weird, I was the only one in the class that listens to Heavy Metal. Everyone else was either rock or Pop. I was close to the top. Maybe its because i was in a catholic school and it was "against our religion" to listen to heavy metal.
Thats what our school priest said. fricking conservative basturd - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Oddly enough, I also definitely notice this. Every single smart person I know is heavily into heavy metal music. The more they're into it, the smarter they are. It's really weird...
- KillerJ59J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8manitoba98xp: In my opinion, intelligent people don't overuse exclamation marks; therefore, I think it should read, 'In addition to all that, I'm a proud metalhead!'
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8EDIT: OOPS, TwilightKing posted practically the same thing while I was writing. Mod him up.
Hilarious. Digg got this directly from Slashdot. It was wrong there and it's wrong here too. Blatantly copying mistakes makes me laugh. - keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Anal *****!
- carloto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7political message?... MEGADETH!!!!

Now that is metal. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7lars ulrich doesn't love metal, look what has become of metallica.
- salvadordali, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Metallica is a lame, pathetic puppet show of what they used to be, which was all-out metal-deity badasses with intelligent, very creative music.
Listen to anything before the "Black Album".
They are sold-out fake lamo poseurs now.
I'm in my 30's & they kicked ass like no one's business back then. I don't know what happened. Sad, I wonder if Cliff would have gone along with them when they changed. - PopcornDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@mancat
Actually she looks like Quasimodo trying to goose step. - Peynis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10this study still doesn't make metalheads any less intolerant and arrogant :(
- haggie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think that Lars Ulrich proves that there is no connection between love of metal and being gifted unless you mean Rainman "gifted".
